EDITOR’SNOTE
The “other” John and Kelly Presenting Ocala Magazine Radio host John Sotomayor’s summertime sub – Kelli Fuqua Hart. That’s right, another John and Kelly team (like the Travolta-Preston duo), only this one spells her name, Kelli, with an “i”.
T
his is an exciting time for Ocala Magazine. There is a lot of new energy circulating within our publication company that is fueling our drive and surging our creativity to provide you – our community – with even more to choose from than ever. For starters, we have a new creative director, Andrew “AJ” Epstein, who brings more than 20 years of experience with large markets, such as his most recent home, Los Angeles. AJ has worked with industry greats in film, photography, and other creative industries. In addition, we have recently launched a new website with our new partners 7Hills from Tallahassee! We are very excited about the new services we can provide for you. Visit www.ocalamagazine. com to see for yourself. Our radio show is now six months old and doing extremely well. That is a lot to juggle. Fortunately, I have Kelli Fuqua Hart to help. During the majority of the next two months, Kelli will host the Ocala Magazine radio show, aired LIVE from WOCA The Source 1370 AM/96.3 FM. Kelli is an Ocala native and University of Florida graduate, having earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in psychology/mental health. In addition to writing for Ocala Magazine, Kelli is an active leader in her community, engaged with local charities and organizations. We definitely welcome her contributions to the radio show! It is wonderful to include a vibrant community leader who demonstrates a clear understanding of local issues and
interests. How appropriate that we welcome Kelli within our issue that pays tribute to young, community leaders, with our 40 Under 40 cover story! Most may remember Kelli was one of our 40 Under 40 last year. Fewer may remember that I was included in 40 Under 40 in 2008, three years before I joined the magazine as staff. It never ceases to amaze me when I am introduced to the wealth of talented, young go-getters in our town of how diverse and fascinating are our community. In this year’s group we present athletes and academics, entrepreneurs and entertainers, and professionals and philanthropists from every industry and interest you could imagine. We even profile an A-list music producer who worked with Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. It doesn’t get much bigger than that! We feel those selected in 40 Under 40 represents progress. What better progress could we hope for than a better understanding of the world we live in, in order to come closer to peace? I have particular high hopes for our cover selection representing this year’s 40 Under 40, Malak Fakhoury. She is our first-ever Muslim cover model. We were drawn to her courage and conviction toward retaining the traditions of her faith while also expressing a cosmopolitan, modern, very American persona. At 18, Malak is poised to change the world around her. We are very excited to follow her journey. This year, we also take 40 Under 40 up a notch by asking the question, “What
are they doing now?” We were fortunate enough to hear from the magazine’s good friend and former 40 Under 40 (“Class of 2011”) Kimberly Leemans and find out how the young budding actress/model is creating waves in Los Angeles as she once did in Ocala. Being a principal agent in the selection of the 40 under 40 in 2011, 2012, and 2013, it gives me a sense of pride to see our selections doing so well. It also presents me a sense of wonder to see how our current group will do in the future, enriching all our lives with their time, talent and treasures.

nce upon a time, three girls, a dreamer, a risk taker and a realist, grew up in the same small town with the same big dream: to live big in life from career goals to passions. And it all happened to come together in the City of Angels. Many years later, after high school and college, each of them went out and took their chances. It paid off because where they are today is anything but small. Meet Kim Leemans, Nancy Diaz and Piper LeJeune, who call Ocala their hometown even while they are 2,433 miles away. They have not always been as close as they are now, in high school they loosely knew of one another, but finding out later in life that they had moved to LA they reconnected and are the best of friends. Many may remember Leemans from the well-known TV show, Americas Next Top Model, where she “smized” with the best of them. Leemans has worked in the movie industry since high school and has some studio film work as well as indie films. Recently, she has worked closely with Jim Hanks, Tom Hank’s brother, on some future projects. She also recently spoofed Mila Jovovich (5th Element/ Resident Evil) in a 20th Century Fox Comedy film and is front in center

as Lois Lane in the short comedy that is generating a great deal of buzz, “Little Man of Steel”, that has been making its festival rounds. It was released online for a week leading up to the blockbuster premiere of Man of Steel and quickly surpassed 20,000 views. A travel show that she created/executive produced/ and hosted is now being sought after by major networks like Travel Channel and Discovery. Leemans continues to model, and was last seen strutting the catwalk at LA fashion week modeling for designers Dar Sara and Furne One (who have made costumes for Rihanna and Katy Perry) as well as Bree Seely. She also has an international Head and Shoulders commercial with football player Troy Polamalu. A fashion editorial photographed by local fashion photographer Kristia Knowels will be published by the end of the year. Diaz works for the Style Network, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal in LA. She started out as a coordinator with the company after having worked in advertising, but has since been promoted to Manager of Marketing Solutions. In her position she services the sales teams to come up with new integrated 360 partnerships and works closely with Piper who works in the digital department. LeJeune also works at Style, as a manager in the digital team. She was promoted from Executive Assistant to the President of Style Network. It is her job to make sure Style is at the forefront of everything technological, whether that be a new app for smart phones or a new website page. A fun fact about her first
job out in LA is she worked as a producer’s assistant on the movie Twilight. Although it may seem like their paths to success have been easy, it was anything but. All three took major risks moving half way across the country, especially since they had no definite job opportunities waiting for them. In the end, however, it paid off. “You work day to day grinding to get your work and that is a risk and I think we all had to be willing to do that,” said Leemans. Each may have their nose to the grindstone, but they take the time out of their
from back home who gets it.” Leemans, Diaz and LeJeune have bonded over where they started out and where they are currently, but they could not be anymore unique. Her friends describe Leemans as the kid of the group. She will be the one to make you laugh on a stressful day. Diaz goes on to say that she is excited about life and wants to enjoy it without worrying about the practicality of it. She is the dreamer. Where Leemans is the child, LeJeune is the mother. She is described as a very wise, practical, intelligent, hard worker. She is not afraid to bring you back down to reality whether that is with personal or work life. She is the realist. Diaz is the gogetter of the group. She lives all the way out, and she does not curb herself on anything. If she wants something, she goes for it with a smile on her face. She is the risk-taker. Together these ladies have formed a triad of successful businesswomen, born of the same roots, who have each other’s backs. LeJeune submitted Diaz’s resume to Style, and Diaz hires Leemans for all of her shoots. “The key to my happiness in my adult life is a supportive group of friends. Professionally and personally they get me to where I need to be” said Diaz. “We are always considering how we can be of value to each other as we grow and as we do more and more,” said LeJeune.
“The key to my happiness in my adult life is a supportive group of friends. Professionally and personally they get me to where I need to be” said Diaz busy schedule to get together, release stress and have fun. The ladies try and meet up at least once every two weeks, if not every week, for some Pho, a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. “No one knows you like someone who knows where you came from,” said LeJeune. “It’s a big deal because I think we look at where we are sometimes and we get frustrated, but we are able to remind each other to be grateful for how far we have come. It’s encouraging and homey to feel like you have someone

ChiropraCtiC treatments
Chiropractors work on the joints and soft tissues of the spine – the most important link between the body and the brain. When the back is injured, it locks down, making the non-injured parts work harder. Thus, when adjustments are made to the spine, it takes the pressure off the nerves as well as causing the release of endorphins, which are the “feel good chemicals” released by the brain, which in turn makes the patients feel better. Dr. Leo Teeter of Fakhoury Medical and Chiropractic Center in Ocala has been a chiropractor for over 10 years and explains that over the past several years he has certainly noticed an increase in the number of people seeking chiropractic treatment, as it seems that more people are looking for alternatives to taking prescription medicine and most people can receive chiropractic care without the need for any medication.
meditation
According to the National Institute of Health, more than 10 percent of the population in the U.S. have tried meditation, rendering it one of the most common forms of alternative medicine being used today. Meditation is something that people can do practically anywhere. It is free, and most of all, a very personalized experience. Meditation is not only great for stress release but also, according to the
Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine, there has been an increase in scientific evidence to support its effectiveness in improving symptoms of asthma, pain and high blood pressure. Additionally, because meditation naturally reduces stress levels, it may also alleviate anxiety, depression and insomnia.
Medicine practicing Yoga regularly can reduce stress, control diabetes and high blood pressure symptoms, and reduce inflammation.
hypnosis
massage therapy
Although getting a massage has become a part of modern lifestyle, in addition to simply relaxing stressed muscles and relieving stress, massage therapy actually helps improve medical conditions. Certain forms of massage can alleviate the symptoms associated with cancer treatment as well as reducing the pain in fibromyalgia patients. April Colton of Ocala has reaped the benefits of massage therapy for a long time. In addition to receiving massage therapy for relaxation purposes, Colton swears by the benefits of deep tissue massage as well as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) treatments. Deep tissue massage breaks up scar tissue and can also release any type of muscle injury or spasm. MLD is a massage treatment intended to promote lymph drainage in the lymph vessels. Practiced for centuries, Yoga combines meditation with mild stretching and specific physical positions to bring together the body, mind and spirit to ultimately attain maximum health. In addition to relaxation, Yoga has been proven to provide significant health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative
According to Marie Church, certified hypnotherapist and owner of Wings of Wellness, hypnosis gives the individual the ability to unlock the subconscious through guided suggestions for a change of emotions, both physical and behavioral. Aside from the commonly known treatments of hypnosis, such as giving up smoking and weight loss, HypnoBirthing is now being used as a method of achieving relaxed, natural childbirth using selfhypnosis techniques. With the continued increase in the cost of medical treatment and medicine, more people today are looking at alternative medicine as another option to take care of their health issues naturally.
“Massage therapy has been good not only for my physical body, but also for my mind and soul. A typical practitioner works on your physical body, but with this you get help with everything.”
