Since his early days as a society editor in Miami Beach, as a photojournalist Ron has devoted his writing and dedicated his photography to charity events.

Summer Reflection on Creativity, Compassion, and New Talent

SUMMER IS IN FULL SWING AND IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME, just step outside. It is hot! However, my family and I are lucky enough to spend the last few weeks of summer vacation celebrating my daughter turning 13 in beautiful Colorado. It’s a chance to go whitewater rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and just reconnect with Mother Nature, something I urge our readers to do safely within the Florida heat.

In keeping with “hot”, this issue is our highly-anticipated 40 Under 40 edition which I’ve got to say, these fine men and women are truly upholding all the beauty and diversity our community has to offer. Each year we get to see the new young faces within our said community doing their best for the city that we all call home and this year is no different. This issue is filled with vibrant and uplifting portraits of young (and yes 40 is still young) and hardworking men and women and these portraits wouldn’t be as vibrant if it weren’t for our new photographer and graphic designer, Joshua Jacobs who has brought such light and enthusiasm to our 40 Under 40. I mean, this issue is no easy under taking and he handled it with so much grace and professionalism that we decided to include him as our 40th nominee. We are thankful for all his talents and look forward to see what comes next for him here at Ocala Magazine.

Lastly, I want to take a moment to speak about our charity this month, Marion County Children Alliance’s Family Violence Prevention Workgroup. Violence in any capacity is never a good thing, but especially when it comes from within the home. Our homes are our safe spaces where we can come together and share in love and happiness. I strive to always make my home somewhere my children want to be, safely and securely. This is why what Monica Bryant has headed up is so near and dear to my heart and why this workgroup deserves the spotlight this month. While I hope all homes are safe, I know that for some, they are not and the Family Violence Prevention Workgroup is dedicated to provide the necessary resources and services to help those families in crisis. They truly give me faith that one day my dream will be made a reality.

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things

Every day as we go about our lives, we encounter ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Most of the time, we don’t even realize it, but rest assured, a person can be changing a life because, well, they’re just good people doing a good thing.

On June 1, I had the honor of attending the 2024 HALO Awards at the Brownwood Hotel & Spa in The Villages. The annual event is sponsored by Kids Central Inc. to honor foster parents across the five-county 5th Judicial Circuit that includes Marion, Lake, Sumter, Citrus and Hernando counties. For those who don’t know, Kids Central is the public-private partnership that manages child welfare and foster care in our communities. (Disclosure: I sit on the Kids Central Board of Directors.)

It was an amazing evening. With a theme of “Disco Ball: The 1970s,” party goers dressed in their best ‘70s attire and danced to KC & the Sunshine Band among other disco-era bands as Kids Central sought to recognize the valuable service these parents provide our communities.

“When I look at foster parents, I see the lynch pin of our system of care,” said John Cooper, CEO of Kids Central. “Successful foster parents really make for a successful system of care. And their job is not easy.”

Currently, there are 257 licensed foster homes in Circuit 5 housing 1,573 children. Marion County has the largest number of foster homes, 91, and foster children, 726, among the five counties in the circuit.

I’m not sure what my idea of a foster parent was before attending the HALO Awards, but what I saw among the hundreds who came to the event was young, vibrant people who seemed genuinely enthusiastic

about what they do.

Cooper noted that a study done a decade ago of foster parents found the typical foster home was headed by a single, elderly female. Today, because of a concerted effort by the organization, that profile has changed, with most foster homes headed by younger couples. One thing that has remained constant, Cooper added, is that most foster parents are active in their churches, where Kids Central has focused much of its recruiting efforts.

“Most parents do it because they really have a passion for the kids,” he said, adding that many of the children in the system are troubled.

“They come with trauma, and with trauma comes challenges. Yet, these parents open their homes to these children. That tells me they are doing it for the right reasons.”

For the record, it’s not about the money. Most foster parents received between $400 and $600 a month to care for a foster child. Anyone who has bought groceries or clothing lately knows that isn’t going to cover all the costs of raising a child. A “large percent-

“They come with trauma, and with trauma comes challenges. Yet, these parents open their homes to these children. That tells me they are doing it for the right reasons.”

age” of foster parents have their own children, too, Cooper said.

You just don’t become a foster parent either. The process is lengthy and requires training, background checks, an intensive home study and interviews with friends and family.

“It’s really invasive,” Cooper said.

The invasiveness doesn’t stop with licensing. After a foster child enters a home, foster parents have to shuttle their charges to sports and dance practices and doctor’s appointments, not to mention regular meetings with case managers, hosting sibling visits and getting children to parental visits.

So, next time you encounter a foster parent, say thank you. They take on a difficult job that changes and, in some cases, saves lives. They’re heroes to many, and most of us never know it.

KCI recognized the foster parents of the year in each of the five counties it serves. They were:

• Marion County –

Frank and Branda Woods

• Citrus County –

Nicholas and Jenifer Yorro

• Lake County –

Deborah Pennick

• Sumter County –

Michael and Kimberly Klokus

• Hernando County –

Joseph and Sarah Nazario

Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Or as Cooper put it, “I don’t know if they want the recognition, but they sure deserve it.”

Amen to that.

Embracing Unity: Overcoming Division in Our Community

It seems to me that today, more than ever, we are living in a world that is polarized in every sense. Political issues, cultural clashes and more push us further apart with little seeming to draw us back together. However, as your mayor, I believe it is vital for us to overcome these many divisions and rediscover the power of unity. We know how easy it is to fall into the trap of divisiveness, especially when faced with conflicting opinions on social media. It is precisely in these moments that we must resist the urge to retreat to our own corners, or worse, fire back with more anger and hatred, severing already fractured relationships.

It is said that one of the greatest strengths of any community is the ability to come together in times of need. Whether facing natural disasters, social crises or an economic downturn, it is in our unity that we overcome these challenges and emerge stronger than before. It is in setting aside our differences and learning to work together that we succeed, and there is no telling what we can achieve when we work together.

Every day we are faced with challenges that will test our family, community and nation but remember, at the heart of it all, we all want very similar things.

As we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day on July 4th, let us remember that those who have fought for our country and those who fight even today, risk life and limb so that we are “one nation, under God, indivisible …” Let’s honor that indivisibility by engaging in constructive dialogue, lending a hand to one another, seeking common ground and celebrating each individual’s unique contributions to this community. Every day we are faced with challenges that will test our family, community and nation but remember, at the heart of it all, we all want very similar things.

Please remember that we are stronger together, and with unity and cooperation we can overcome any obstacle. Let’s seek common ground and find solutions that benefit the entire community and focus on what unites us, not what divides us.

Ocala, you will see that we will have many opportunities to put this into practice this year and I have total confidence in your cooperation. Enjoy the July 4th celebrations and be safe.

Ben Marciano is the mayor of Ocala.

Shorter Treatments Deliver Positive Outcomes for Cancer Patients

After being diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, Brian Belcastro was told he would need daily radiation treatments for nine weeks. Concerned about potential side effects and his ability to continue overseeing his welding, fabrication and diesel repair business in Hernando County, Brian sought a second opinion.

He met with Dr. Luis Carrascosa, board-certified radiation oncologist at Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute’s (FCS) Ocala Cancer Center.

After reviewing Brian’s diagnosis and discussing his desire to maintain his normal, active lifestyle, Dr. Carrascosa informed Brian that he could be treated in a total of five sessions using a very precise and advanced form of radiation known as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Today, more than one year after completing his treatment without side effects, Brian is disease-free and enjoying life.

Brian is among the growing number of patients now receiving short-term radiation therapy, like SBRT, for many forms of cancer with positive results.

A focus on safety, precision and personalized treatment

At FCS we apply the enormous ongoing advancements in science and technology to improve the way we plan and deliver radiation therapy.

Using state-of-the-art equipment and sophisticated imaging software, our skilled radiation oncologists are able to deliver higher doses of radiation quickly and safely to a cancerous tumor with great precision, often in one to five treatments. Nearby organs and healthy tissues are protected and side effects are minimal. Long-term outcomes are dramatically better than conventional radiation therapy that can span several weeks or months.

An important weapon in our battle against cancer, radiation therapy uses high-energy X-ray beams to shrink and destroy cancer cells and malignant tumors. Virtually all forms of cancer respond to radiation therapy, which can be used alone or in combination with other treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy.

We offer:

• AlignRT/Surface-Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT)

• Brachytherapy

• Breast Brachytherapy/StrutAdjusted Volume Implant (SAVI)

• Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)

• Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

• On-Board Imager

• Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

The only comprehensive cancer center in Marion County

The FCS Ocala Cancer Center serves patients with all forms of cancer, blood disorders and other conditions, close to home. Our expert team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and pharmacists work together under one roof. This approach makes it easier to coordinate and deliver the absolute best treatment for each patient’s unique needs to achieve the best outcomes.

Need a second opinion?

When choosing cancer care, no question is too silly and no amount of research or preparation is too much. Do not be afraid to ask what you want to know to feel comfortable and confident that you have made the best decision for your cancer journey. We welcome your questions and inquiries.

Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute has been awarded with the prestigious seal of accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR), which represents the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Bigfoot

The debate over bigfoot’s existence is wild, but not in the minds of these true believers

Bigfoot

It was a rainy day during a vacation to the north Georgia mountains, so my wife, a couple friends, and I decided to take a drive into town for something to do. Along the way, we came upon one of those kitschy roadside attractions, this one called “Expedition Bigfoot: The Sasquatch Museum.” It had a giant bigfoot out front and there wasn’t anything else around, so we decided it might be worth a few laughs to stop.

When we walked in, the clerk selling tickets asked us, “So, where are y’all from?”

“Ocala, Florida,” I responded.

“Ocala! Oh, wow! That’s a real hotbed for bigfoot activity,” she responded. Well, needless to say, we didn’t see that coming. Who knew?

It turns out that people who track bigfoot activity say Florida is No. 3 among the 50 states in bigfoot “sightings,” behind Washington and California; and Marion County is No. 2 in the state with 18 reported sightings, behind Collier County, located on the western edge of the Everglades.

The bigfoot museum did, in fact, generate more than a few laughs and some moments of bewilderment (the glass-encased 3-foot-long bigfoot turd comes immediately to mind). There was also a big map of bigfoot reports from around the country and, sure enough, there was Marion County full of red dots.

So, when the Great Florida Bigfoot Conference came to Ocala last month, I thought it would be a chance to finally see and hear the evidence of bigfoot in Florida, or as the natives call him/her/it, the swamp ape.

As I was walking to the World Equestrian Center expo center where the conference was being held, a middle-aged couple, Mike and Lorraine, were walking briskly toward the entrance.

“You going to the Bigfoot Conference?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Mike said. “Can’t wait.”

“You from around here?” I inquired.

“Nah, we’re from New Jersey,” Mike said. “Can’t wait to get inside. All the stars are here.”

The stars?

Turns out finding bigfoot is a burgeoning cottage industry. The stars, who host TV shows, write books and have podcasts, were Russell Accord (Expedition Bigfoot), Ranae Holland (Finding Bigfoot), Ryan “RPG” Golembeske (Finding Bigfoot), and Matt Pruitt (Bigfoot & Beyond), among others.

Golembeske, who lives in Florida and wears a large bigfoot medallion around his neck, was the master of ceremonies. And he opened by declaring the conference “a safe place.”

“You are in the one absolute safe place to go all in on the ‘squatch,” he told the crowd. “Everybody here wants to talk about it. Everybody here is obsessed.”

Apparently, they’re safe from ridicule for

“I think we’re talking about five, six, seven different species.”

saying they have seen or believe in bigfoot.

“How many times do they tell you ‘It’s just a bear’?” Golembeske said. “Yet, it changes your life.”

Interestingly, most of the people I talked to only wanted to give their first name. Even the panelists who talked about their personal experiences to the audience of hundreds only identified themselves by their first names.

“Based on what I’ve seen, I mean, grown men almost in tears, they’ve seen something,” conference promoter Marty Pippin said. “The mystery behind it is compelling.”

“More than once I’ve seen a country boy coming up to me and telling me about running into bigfoot and being afraid to go back into the woods – afraid to go back in the woods.”

While a parade of conference attendees took the stage to talk about their encounters with bigfoot, none could produce a clear photograph or forensic evidence. But that did not diminish their belief that they had seen bigfoot or a sasquatch or a swamp ape.

Josh told of his encounter on the Babcock Ranch in South Florida. Michael saw bigfoot in the Green Swamp, a sprawling Central Florida swamp considered the hottest of bigfoot hotbeds in Florida.

Florida bigfoots, it turns out, are different, depending on which part of the state you live in. The bigfoot hunters say bigfoots found in South Florida are smaller than those found in Central and North Florida.

Chris, a bigfoot believer, told the audience:

“We have the umbrella term bigfoot, but I think we’re talking about five, six, seven

This page: Expedition Bigfoot: The Sasquatch Museum
“How many times do they tell you ‘It’s just a bear’?... Yet, it changes your life.”

different species.”

So why is Florida so hospitable for bigfoot or swamp apes? Well, it’s full of swamps, forests and caves, panelists said.

One bigfoot enthusiast who isn’t completely convinced one way or the other is biologist Ranae Holland, who appears on Animal Planet’s “Finding Bigfoot.” She called herself “the skeptical scientist.”

“I really wondered, am I sane,” she told the crowd. “But the reason I did this was curiosity. I love the idea of bigfoot. I’m fascinated by it.”

And while she said she can’t go anywhere without someone coming up with a personal sighting story, she’s not so sure. Or, at least, says she’s not so sure.

“They believe what they’re telling me, and they want me to be believe, too,” Holland said.

Yet she added, “Nobody’s got any proof, but they’ll fight to defend it … Everybody has their beliefs, but nobody has scientific evidence.”

“So, I don’t know what bigfoot is.

There’s something. I just don’t know what it’s about. There’s something going on, I just don’t know what it is.”

Chris Balzano, an author, podcaster and folklorist who has written about weird Florida, including “Haunted Ocala National Forest,” said the search for bigfoot and the search for others who believe in it has had a positive effect.

“There’s a lot more collaboration and cross-talking going on,” he said.

The eyewitness accounts continued throughout the day.

Mary said something yelled at her and “the smell” made her a believer.

Scott told of an encounter in 1979 when he was a high school senior in Kyler, New York. Something grunted, then grunted again. Then he heard steps as he ran toward his house.

“That’s when the hair stood up on the back of my neck,” he said.

Mike was hiking in the mountains

along the Tennessee-North Carolina border in 2019 when everything got quiet and he “had a sense of foreboding.”

“It was the scariest thing I’ve ever felt in my life,” he said. “I could hear the leaves falling from the trees, that’s how quiet it was.”

“Just telling the story gives me goosebumps.”

Tammy was 4 in 1971 and living near the Green Swamp when she looked out her bedroom window and saw a 10- to 12-foottall animal walk by. It looked down at her.

“The animal was absolutely massive,” she remembered. “It was dark and muscular. Then, it took off moving so fast. It horrified me how fast it moved.”

Now, years later, she said, “my brain could not let it go.”

Thankful to be in a safe place to share her story, she said, “This is the first time I’ve told this outside of close friends and family. And I want to say thank you. I’m so grateful for this community.”

Finally, I ran into Mia Laurenzo. host of the “SoFlo Weird Show” podcast. We talked and she looked around at the hundreds of people going all ‘squatch and observed, “It’s very weird. It’s also very cool. It’s a friendly, safe place to say you believe in bigfoot. And that’s cool.”

Yes, it is.

Engagement story: This one is a little un-traditional. Daniel surprised me one random day by taking me to Underwood’s Jewelers, the same place where his parents bought their wedding rings almost 50 years ago. A few stand out moments to me were our first dance, cutting Chef Yohan’s beautiful cake which we can’t wait to eat again on our 1 year anniversary, our live wedding painter and the amazing signature cocktails! Our Bubble Exit was also fun! One unique touch was that the pastor that officiated our ceremony also baptized Mallory as a baby. Everyone at WEC truly went above and beyond to make our day perfect.

a Late Night Dance

with the Demons Within.

My destiny is a tapestry woven with the threads of uncertainty, where the roadmap to greatness awaits me. I walk with unyielding certainty towards the unseen, believing in the luminous path that leads to my destined greatness.

Amidst the intricate web of uncertainty, my steps falter, ensnared as if a wild posse of cowboys aims to lasso me with their python-skin boots, entangling my weary heels in their reckless pursuit.

Yet, who am I to question their motives, amidst the cosmic tango between the unwavering drive within a soul and the fateful intentions of naysayers?

Maybe this is an enchanting waltz where persistence meets its match, and I find myself the solitary figure on destiny's grand ballroom stage.

So let’s dance.

Thoughts On Being A Father

Being a father, a daddy, and my favorite, DaDa

The most rewarding and joyful experience in life is to create and raise new life. This journey brings a wealth of new challenges, experiences, and moments that no digital media can capture forever.

However, this isn't just about the rewards and joys of raising a child. It's about our own journey as fathers, unraveling our upbringing, and learning lessons from our roots. This is our chance to reimagine life and provide a pure, new experience to the life we nurture into adulthood.

As the first men in our children's lives, it is our responsibility to stand firm like a mountain and love unconditionally like our mothers. We must never show weakness, never stray from our path, and always prioritize our children.

Many fathers go unrecognized, a reflection of the world we live in. However, as I mentioned, this journey is not about seeking recognition. Still, it feels good to receive some appreciation.

Embrace the evening warmth with a backyard barbecue.

Beyond the Stage: Reilly Arts Center

Community members recently gathered for a remarkable evening of musical performances and charitable giving at the Reilly Arts Center’s annual fund-raising gala, “Beyond the Stage.” Held at the Reilly, the event showcased a diverse array of musical talent while raising essential funds to benefit music education and arts programming. Thanks to generous donors, the gala surpassed its goal and raised over $105,000.

Guests were treated to an unforgettable night filled with an eclectic mix of musical performances. The evening commenced with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra Chorus, performing “Down to the River to Pray” led by Joshua L. Mazur. That was followed by a private performance by Steward Kitts, the esteemed concertmaster of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. Kitts captivated the audience with his virtuoso violin skills and storytelling.

The evening also highlighted the remarkable talents of students from the Community Music Conservatory, who delivered inspirational demonstrations that left a lasting impression on all in attendance. Their passion for music and dedication to their craft served as a testament to the importance of music education in fostering the next generation of musical talent.

“It is always so inspiring and so humbling to witness our community of supporters come together not only to champion our mission, but to build an Ocala with art and music at its center,” said R.J. Jenkins, chairman of the Reilly Arts Center board.

The success of the gala reflects the commitment of the Ocala community to preserving and promoting the arts, ensuring that music continues to enrich the lives of individuals of all ages and backgrounds for years to come.

Kiwanis 100 Years

In 1924, a group of men formed the Kiwanis Club of Ocala when the city’s population was around 6,000. The Kiwanis Club has continued to serve this community and the children who live in it for 100 years. Over the years, they witnessed many significant events such as the prohibition, the Great Depression, the Holocaust, and Pearl Harbor. In the following years, they saw segregation end with the Civil Rights Act, the first Super Bowl, discovery of DNA, and tragic events like the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, the Gulf War, 911, school shootings and a pandemic. As President Travis Bennett acknowledges, through all these obstacles and victories, we have continued to ignite and shine as a lighthouse of service to our community.

Our 100-year Anniversary was held at IHMC, our guest speaker was C. Todd Smith who served as Governor of The Florida District of Kiwanis in 2017-2018. Todd praised the Ocala Kiwanis Club for their continued successes with our signature projects—Camp Kiwanis in the National Forest, the Pancake Breakfast (we still use Ken Whitsett’s SUPER STACKER) and Beef Sale (spearheaded by Jim Kirk and Doug Oswald)to raise funds to provide scholarships to the Camp, and the many projects sponsored by our Youth Leadership Programs (Builders Club at middle schools and Key Clubs at high schools). Thanks to our annual Sportsman’s Dinner fundraiser, we have expanded our programs to include Bring up Grades (BUGS), Reach Out and Read (early literacy project), Terric Kids (citizenship), Never Shake a Baby, hygiene kits for homeless children in our school system, and providing support to the Boys and Girls Club.

The Kiwanis Club meets Fridays at the Elks Club at noon and our Club Satellite meets the first Monday of each month at 6:00

pm at Mimi’s. Our Club Satellite is a great option for those who cannot meet in the middle of a workday. The Tipsy Sparrows

Medium/style/genre:

Digital and acrylic painting, illustrative, black and brown girl joy art

In your opinion, what role does the artist have in society?

Through their art, artists bridge the gap between individuals, communities, and cultures. They create a space for empathy and understanding, allowing viewers to connect with different viewpoints, experiences, and emotions. In doing so, they foster dialogue and solidarity, promoting social cohesion and mutual respect. As a Black/Latina designer, I am celebrating the strength, beauty, and joy of being Black and Brown, that which I didn't see in art and media growing up.

Explain your art:

My art and designs serve as a vibrant tapestry of representation and storytelling. Growing up as a Black and Latina woman, I yearned for the visibility of my community. Now, I channel my experiences and heritage into celebrating the resilience, joy, and complexity of Black and Brown women. From whimsical clay creations to mental health reminders in sticker form, my work is a colorful ode to the joy of life. Beneath the surface, each piece carries the nuanced journey of life's seasons, blending moments of joy with reflections on shared struggles. Through my art, I aim to uplift, inspire, and foster connection.

How can people find you and your work?

Find me on my site, where I showcase all the stuff I do: thestudiogab.com. Also on IG @thestudiogab.com

Medium/style/genre: Irish - Americana

In your opinion, what role does the artist have in society? I believe that the role of an artist is not necessarily prescribed or fixed. Historically, an artist’s role has served various purposes, such as practicality, historical documentation, and even cultural preservation. However, as society has evolved, the role of artists has also changed. Some artists see a purpose or role in influencing societal perspectives and fostering change, while others use their art as a medium for expressing ideas and emotions that may otherwise go uncommunicated. Additionally, artists have the ability and role to help us better comprehend our world by presenting it in unique and creative ways. Regardless of how an artist chooses to utilize their position, it definitely holds significant importance.

Explain your music: If I were to categorize our music, I suppose I would classify it as "Americana" due to its blend of various styles and origins commonly associated with that genre today. Our song writing is centered primarily around storytelling, drawing from both of our own personal experiences. Our songs incorporate elements of both Irish, bluegrass, folk, blues, and pop music, using instrumentation such as the guitar, banjo, fiddle, accordion, uillean pipes, flute, and piano. Finally, our unique combination of personal musical influences and individual personalities help add to our distinctive and fun sound.

How can people find you and your work? We can be found on most streaming music platforms: ie. Spotify, Apple, and iTunes, and plenty more. We also use our Facebook and Instagram for social media - a TikTok account will be coming soon.

From the backside of the race track

As I was touring a large group of partners from the Ocala Metro Chamber and Economic Partnership’s Equine Initiative (CEP) recently around the Ocala Breeders Sales (OBS) facility, I was so delighted to see a group of partners gathered to listen, who were not only interested in the world of horse racing, but who would even like to own a racehorse themselves at some point. One of the beautiful things about educating this group is that they are all so open-minded and all seemed to have a lot of respect for what thoroughbred trainers do.

Like most equine industry careers that involve a living breathing 1,200-pound animal in training, there are very few holidays and no sleep-ins or rest days. It is a labor of love and for the most part, trainers, owners, breeders, and grooms really care about their horses. There are bad apples in all industries and in all sports, but the majority in the thoroughbred racing industry live, breathe and love what they do. There have been some occasions that have brought about race disqualifications, but the introduction of HISA (Horse Racing Integrity Act) has prevented the majority of that and will eventually bring about the prevention of almost all of the actions of ‘the bad apples’. X-rays, medical records and veterinary supervision oversight of the horse sales, like those held at OBS, provide the necessary extra layer of protection for the horses. There are always changes that can make it better, but as we learn and grow in our knowledge of horses’ needs and their behavior, we can always be better. I believe we are better than we have ever been.

The CEP group visited Niall Brennan Stables’ barn at OBS and also RiceHorse Stables. The love of the horse has passed down from generations in both families. Both

Niall Brennan and Ali de Meric shared their thoughts and ideas with us on our tour. Ali and her husband Brandon Rice both spoke and one of their young children ran over to join us grinning and enjoying the attention of the crowd. Their little dog ran through the barn and the staff all tended to the horses as we listened. It is a family affair and I am quite sure it will go on to the next generation and the next. They shared one lovely horse up close with us. She was fit and shiny and quite mellow despite the crowd looking over at her. Brandon and Ali are a team and Brandon showed us what conformational aspects of the horse were important to him and how much heart a horse needed to be really good at their job. He also shared how sometimes he and Ali are not able to buy the most expensive horses, but that the ones they have always have potential and they try to give them all the tools to be as successful as possible. He explained that there is never any skimping in their feed or hay protocols as good nutrition is key to success.

Niall Brennan and his team have had multiple winners of major stakes races. These are horses who have graduated from their training program. To name a few, Nyquist , Gunrunner, Got Stormy, Essential Quality, DayattheSpa, Cupid and many more big names. Niall talked about the time they take with each horse and how much the economy has affected them more recently, but they do what they do and always in the best interest of the horse. At the Brennans’ barn at OBS, each stall has a toy hanging beside the huge stuffed bag of fresh hay. The fillies have a pink teddy bear to play with when they get bored, and the colts have a jolly ball to toss and keep them busy. If a horse does not fetch a fair price in the sale, they take it back to the farm and rethink their plan of what to do next. Niall also talked about their program, the Final Furlong. After their horses are sold, Niall’s wife Stephanie tracks each horse closely as it advances through its racing career. Just because they sold a horse, it does not mean they won’t follow the progress of each one. Their policy is that if a horse trained at Niall Brennan Stables, it could always return there to be retired or to be retrained and rehomed for a different career. I love the responsibility the Brennans take for each animal and the importance of each

who passes through their program. There are others who do the same, more than you would realize.

As I travel to some major stakes’ races, I see so many of the thoroughbred horses who are Ocala/Marion graduates and they have always had a great foundation of training here. That gives them a great head start for their racing career and any other career they may enter later in life. I also see so many good-hearted people taking care of these horses, providing them with large hay bags stuffed full of fresh hay, magnawave treatments, other therapies or massage, special early morning walks out of the stall to their favorite grazing patch or just stopping by to give them a scratch on the face or a baby peeled carrot!

Horse racing often gets a bad rap from people who do not see what I see. I feel privileged to be able to enter the backside of racetracks and the barns at Ocala Breeders Sales to introduce people to the side of racing that often the general public does not see!

Again, yes, there are some bad apples in all things, and we can all always seek and desire to be better! However, I recently had my truck wrapped at Smash Wraps for my broadcast TV/radio show and I had multiple horse sports illustrated on it. I included racing in those sports, because yes, I am a supporter and more than ever, I think the emphasis is on horse welfare with almost all involved! More people should see racing from the backside!

Where You Belong: National Recreation and Parks Month

The concept of “putting down roots” is deeply ingrained in each of us as human beings. It’s human nature to want to create a permanent place that provides a sense of community through friends, activities and interactions. Often, individuals who have moved to a new location seek out things that provide a familiar feeling to help center themselves during a transition. Looking for local programs and activities provides an opportunity to connect with new people and new activities. Many times, people inadvertently stumble upon activities promoted through their local recreation and parks department, therefore creating a foundation for new beginnings and new experiences in a new location.

During the month of July, the Ocala Recreation and Parks Department promotes building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. This nationally celebrated month provides insights into how these professionals are establishing a network of programs that help everyone from children to adult seniors. This year’s theme caters to the power of community that starts in our parks and recreation centers, with staff guiding each person through the art of self-discovery.

“Where You Belong,” encompasses how our recreation and parks staff provides welcoming and inclusive programs and essential classes for all ages and abilities and safe accessible spaces to build connections.

There is so much to celebrate during the month of July and the City of Ocala Recreation and Parks staff is there to help connect citizens to services and amenities. With a variety of facilities to fit every lifestyle, the City of Ocala Recreation and Parks Department has something for everyone: pocket parks in neighborhoods, large-scale parks downtown, art parks, splash pads, sports parks, nature parks and parks for exercising. The possibil-

ities are endless when it comes to enjoying what Ocala parks have to offer.

The recreation and parks staff is dedicated to creating memorable experiences through community events. People enjoy events that take place throughout our city, but few realize the team effort it takes to organize and implement these entertainment opportunities. Setting up stages, chairs, tents, booking talent, securing vendors, and making sure everything goes as planned –that’s just another day in the life of a recreation and parks professional. The goal is always to make sure that the community is having fun and remaining safe, even if it means long hours.

Establishing roots within a community provides a benefit beyond having a place to call home; it can lead to a greater sense of connection among fellow residents. During the month of July, we want the residents of Ocala to embrace the “Where You Belong” theme and know that our City of Ocala Recreation and Parks staff is passionate about their jobs and the services they provide.

Ashley Dobbs marketing and communications coordinator for the City of Ocala.

Marion County Community Services helps Hands of Mercy Everywhere provide vocational assistance for local teens

Marion County Community Services helps nonprofit organizations throughout the county apply for federal grant funding to provide homeless assistance, affordable housing or other similar community needs.

One organization that Community Services has provided assistance for is Hands of Mercy Everywhere, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping teenage girls, teenage mothers and their children who need a place to live and/or psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual care.

Marion County Community Services assisted Hands of Mercy Everywhere through the Community Development Block Grant program, which provided $403,000 in funding. Hands of Mercy Everywhere matched this amount with $329,000, and with the combined amounts, the organization was able to complete renovations on the former Belleview Historical Society building.

These renovations allowed Hands of Mercy Everywhere maintain the historical character of the building while updating it to become the Lakeside Learning Center, a prep vocational center providing training in a variety of fields: hospitality, culinary, CNA, daycare, GED and mortuary cosmetology.

This renovation is one of four building renovations that Marion County Community Services has assisted in funding through the Community Development Block Grant program over the years.

Hands of Mercy Everywhere held a ribbon cutting for the new building in late May, and the event was attended by multiple Marion County commissioners and leadership, along with Florida State Representative Stan McClain.

A Vision For The Future

The Maughs Grotto Honors The Woman Who Envisioned Tuscawilla Park

Since 1916 the land surrounding what was once known as Taylor Pond has been a gathering place for Ocala’s residents. Today, it’s a place where communities come together and enjoy art, sports, wildlife and all the beauty our Central Florida topography has to offer. Few know of its origins or the woman who championed its formation.

According to the Ocala Star-Banner, it was In April of 1916, when residents Miss Brumby and Mrs. Maugh’s were driving past an overgrown area of town that had been desperately neglected. At the time it was considered Ocala’s worst eyesore. With the overgrown nature of the area, and the variation of animals roaming freely, pollutants were finding their way the stormwater that drained into the pond causing potential health concerns. Yet, Mrs. Maughs saw through all of those obstacles. She looked beyond the overgrown brush

and into the potential of the land. She envisioned a place where children could play and a place where the community could gather.

Deciding to put her desires into action she petitioned the Women’s Club President to appoint a parks committee to help further develop the project. Knowing of no person better equipped for the task, club president Mrs. R.A. Burford appointed Mrs. Maughs as chairman to oversee the park committee.

In 1916, shortly after the idea for a park was created and a committee was formed, they petitioned the city to hand over the property to the care of the Woman’s Club of Ocala. A few council members initially opposed the idea however their hesitation was quickly turned into support and the city handed the property over for revitalization. The Ocala Banner published support for this project at the time stating that the Taylor Pond Property “...shall become one of the showplaces of our city.”

The Women’s Club worked tirelessly under the direction of landscape architect Harold B. Swope. In his own words his designs “would provide the greatest number of attractive park features for both children and adults, through the utilization of existing conditions rather than by resorting to costly experiments of grading and the alterations of the natural contours.”

Passing away in 1919, Mrs. Maughs never got to see the full development of the park. Those that knew her honored her memory in the park with a beautiful memorial tableted in marble. The Maughs Grotto is dedicated to the tireless efforts of one woman who looked past the problems and saw a solution. Tuscawilla Park and the Maughs Grotto are standing legacies of what community spirit and ingenuity can produce.

“In the building of a city we must not build merely for today or tomorrow, but for all future time.”
