NEW PASTRY CHEF

The World Equestrian Center Ocala is pleased to announce their newest hire, Yohann Le Bescond as the Executive Pastry Chef at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. In this role, Le Bescond will be contributing to the design of the new hotel pastry kitchen, overseeing the creation of dessert menus at all four restaurants on the property and the specialty pastry boutique, Emma’s Patisserie, within the hotel. Along with creative execution, Le Bescond will be hiring, training and managing all bakers and pastry chefs within the five locations on the World Equestrian Center Ocala property. Le Bescond, originally from Treffiagat, France, started baking at the age of 13 in his mother’s kitchen and soon after started the Baker & Pastry Chef Baccalaureate Apprenticeship at the CFA Cuzon in Quimper, France at the age of 15, graduating Summa Cum Laude. At 18 years old, Le Bescond moved to Rennes, France to start the Brevet Technique des Métiers Pâtissier (BTM) program at the Faculté Des Métiers, also graduating Summa Cum Laude. Due to the success of his schooling, Le Bescond was offered a internship with the World’s Best Sugar Master, Stephane Klein, to learn how to create artistic show pieces. He then proceeded to complete an internship in Vienna, Austria working in local bakeries and pastry shops while finishing two additional certifications in candy and ice cream. “I’ve always been lucky to have a lot of inspiration when it comes to desserts,” stated Le Bescond. “I like the details and the precision needed in order to create desserts. The shapes, textures and combination of flavors are endless and that’s what I love about baking.” Although French macarons are amongst his favorites to make, Le Bescond has perfected many treats that have been lauded by a multitude of fans. “My goal is to serve a light treat at the end of a meal that will make you want to order another because it will never be enough.” Le Bescond moved to Miami, Florida in 2016 to lead the pastry department at Le Macaron, Florida’s leading French macaron and pastry shop as sous-chef and moved his way up through promotion to the executive chef and manager roles. He led and designed dessert experiences for the SLS Hotel in Miami Beach, the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami, The Signature Grand Venue and the American Airlines Arena, to name a few, all while leading the team at Le Macaron. Through a few common connections on LinkedIn, the staff at WEC and Le Bescond were introduced and soon after on their way through the interview process due to his impressive career and accomplishments. Chef Le Bescond has earned 2nd place in Pierre Caron’s national contest for puff pastry creation, and brings with him high recommendations from well-known pastry chefs from around the world. Additionally, he was awarded an Extraordinary Ability Green Card, for sustained international acclaim evidenced through extensive documentation that states his abilities will benefit the United States through employment in the industry upon granted entry. Looking Forward with Hope THE UPS AND DOWNS THIS YEAR has provided could not be more polar opposite. And while it might feel like we are headed back into a downward slope with Covid-19’s numbers seeming to spike, I still hold on to hope. If we all take the proper precautions and hold each other accountable, not only can we flatten back down the curve, but also create healthy habits for the future. Now is not the time for selfishness, we are in this together and we must look out for each other so that we can overcome these crazy times and build a brighter tomorrow. From that idea, we have selected Helping Hands as our July Charity Spotlight. What Brad Dinkins has created is a way to help homeless men and women succeed in life by way of honest work. Helping Hands believes in working through both physical and spiritual adversities so that the person becomes stronger in both and is better fit for the world at large. It is this show of togetherness that puts my faith in our community during times like these. This month is also our beloved 40 Under Forty issue with a theme, I feel, very fitting for our community at the moment. These 40 unique and upstanding individuals are an example of the very love our community has for each other. So, while we might be at the precipice of a downward slope, I believe that through hard work and love for one another, we can see the upside of life again. Celebrating Independence BY MAYOR KENT GUINN July brings the opportunity to celebrate Independence Day. The birthday of our great nation is a good time to reflect upon how far we have come through the years. Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and just over 100 years later, Ocala was incorporated as a city on January 28, 1885. We are proud of the progress that has been made in our country and in our city. In unpredictable and trying times like we are in, it can be healthy to look back and gain perspective. America has been through amazingly difficult times and invariably made it through stronger by coming together. Ocala exemplifies that togetherness as much, if not more than anywhere else. During this pandemic we have been there for one another, and continue to do so as we go through the process of opening up again. We have seen peaceful protests and neighbors supporting one another, whatever their personal beliefs are. It is all a display of the freedoms we enjoy and why we should be grateful to our founding fathers. I also would like to congratulate Sandra Wilson on becoming our new city manager. I know she will be exactly what our city needs and I have the utmost confidence in her abilities. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new city councilman, Ire Bethea. He has been a lifelong resident of Ocala and is a representation of the good that comes out of our local community. I hope to see you all out this month, celebrating Independence Day and taking advantage of Ocala’s abundance of outdoor activities. Even if it’s spent behind a mask share in the joy of freedom with others. So, go out and light those fireworks, grill out, celebrate and have a good time with each other, because if I’ve learned anything in my time in this wonderful and diverse community, it’s that joy is best when it is shared. Now go and share it, just be safe and lookout for each other.

esting at the intersection of elegant and rustic one might actually find the perfect venue for all things nuptial-related. In an age that embraces ‘Casual Friday,’ ‘Red Carpet Blue Jeans’ and the athleisure trend of sneakers with suits, it only makes sense that the current milieu would pervade the most treasured of sacraments taking it to abodes normally reserved for pitchforks and hay bales. For Ocala, which has always maintained its white-knuckled grip on a simple, rural culture while trying to beat down the inevitable fusion with cosmopolitan dreams, the dichotomy is a perfect metaphor for a state still trying to figure out just what it wants to be: blue jeans and cowboy boots, or top hat and tails? Why not, both?

A wedding in these times is no longer reserved for – and in fact most times is not – churches and grand ballrooms. The outdoors presents the most spectacular cathedral while a simple barn understates the formality for which the next denim-clad generation craves. What was once a scene reserved for hippies and new-age beatniks has become commonplace for even the milquetoast of the bourgeois class: the barn wedding. Today, though, these barns have class. “I grew up on a farm and this is something I wanted,” said Paige Medeiros, who was recently wed at The Cattle Barn at Triple J Farm. “I didn’t want to feel boxed in like with the usual ballroom. I wanted people to have lots of room, to go in and out without feeling penned in.” Medeiros’ wedding is part of a growing trend that is taking a large share of the wedding market not just in Florida, but right here in Ocala and Marion County. Barn weddings of yesteryear may have included the typical barn scenery as they were held in actual, working barns. These days, the barn look remains while the aromas and bulky equipment are absent to create a

rustic look with a classy vibe all the same. “It was my big day and I still wanted it to be elegant,” Medeiros said. “I wasn’t going to wear cowboy boots and denim – I had a beautiful, traditional dress (bought locally at Mary’s Bridal Couture) and we had the place decorated so it was more elegant (than rustic). “From the flowers to the catering and everything else, you can still do things any way you want – it doesn’t have to be casual even though it’s in a barn.” In a sense, the barn wedding may have even more to offer than the traditional church or ballroom wedding where the stylish “weathered look” will never find a home. The barn offers the country vibe and a rustic setting if so desired, but can just as easily cater to the finer leanings of opulence as many brides demand of their special day. Perhaps she’s a little bit country and he’s a little bit rock-and-roll? The barn venue takes care of all sides, embracing the simplicity of the past while energized in modern fashion. Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum

Light Up Your Life

Beautiful and historic, the lighthouse carries with it a certain romance beguiling to young and old. As iconic structures hearkening back to days sans GPS coordinates, lighthouses serve as metaphors for safe guidance and now stand as artistic monuments of what we once were. The Florida Lighthouse Association lists 29 such structures along the vast coastline with several just a few hours drive away and less. The good thing about visiting any lighthouse is that they are all in historic areas worth of visits in their own rights. The closest lighthouse would be the Cedar Keys Lighthouse that was first operational in 1854 and is located on Seahorse Key. Owned by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife

Service and managed by the University of Florida Marine Laboratory, the house is open to the public in July and during the annual Cedar Key Seafood Festival in October. If planning a trip to the beach, an excursion to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum may be worth it as it offers more of a traditional lighthouse look with nice climb to the top. The state’s only registered inland lighthouse would be the Mount Dora Lighthouse at the Port of Mount Dora in Grantham Park. At 35-feet tall, the lighthouse may be a bit underwhelming, but may be a nice landmark to cross off one’s list when visiting Mount Dora. FOR INFORMATION Cedar Keys Lighthouse

Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame. A renowned showcase of close to 300 cars including Garlits’ famous top-fuel dragsters. The museum is a must for not only drag racing fans, but motorsports fans in general and car enthusiasts.

Marion County Museum of History and Archaeology. Not a timeconsuming visit, but one that is a must for any local with even an ounce of historical curiosity. The 81,610 square-foot museum hosts permanent collections of 18,000 objects from all over the world as well as a 250-seat auditorium, an art library, three art studio/classroom

spaces and a courtyard cafĂŠ. It is located on East Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. Brick City Center for the Arts. Located in downtown Ocala, the center features exhibits which change every month and featuring a variety of mediums. The gallery is open every day except Sunday and Monday. Silver River Museum. The kids may have actually visited on a school field trip already, but why not go back? A tour of the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

natural history and even the re-creation of a late-1800s pioneer settlement village are worth the trip. Fort King National Historic Park. A replica of the famous fort of the mid-1800s, the park features not only the building, but a 1.5-mile nature trail where all can relax and take in a bit of history. The visitor center is currently closed, but the fort, trail and Heritage Garden are still open.

Nothing beats a dip in any of the crystal-clear cool springs offered in central Florida. Nearby Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon offers the cool, clear water for swimming, snorkeling, canoeing and kayaking, but also offers unique hiking trails with waterfalls and floral gardens. East of Ocala, you can take your pick of a myriad of springs, the top two coming to mind being Silver Glen and Alexander Springs, both located in the Ocala National Forest. Silver Glen is located on SR 19 six

Florida used to be home to all kinds of theme parks before Mickey Mouse planted his flag here. The highways were dotted with roadside attractions and parks like “Six Gun Territory” and “Cypress Gardens.” Of course, Silver Springs was Florida’s first tourist attraction, but that’s old news to anyone reading here. Although most are now either ghost towns or shopping centers, some of the old parks remain and may be worth a trip to take you down memory lane. The St. Augustine Alligator Fam Zoological Park hosts rare albinos and Maximo, a 15-foot saltwater croc. Along the theme, the most famous of the retro parks would have to be Gatorland in Orlando with its iconic gator head entrance. Keeping up with the times, Gatorland now offers zip lining rides, shows and an off-road adventure. Among the oldest attractions still hanging on is Bok Tower Gardens, opened in 1929 in Lake Wales. The main attraction is the 205foot tall gothic tower that overlooks the lush landscape and bird sanctuary. It’s located at 1151 Tower Boulevard in Lake Wales. Once the COVID-19 crisis passes and Weeki Wachee Springs State Park opens back up (the city is now dissolved, but not the park) it may be time to re-visit 1960s Florida and the famous mermaid show.

Another Ocala gem that even non-bike enthusiasts should take the time to enjoy at least once while the opportunity is there. Perhaps Florida’s premier destination for off-road cycling, Santos Trails offers miles of trails through forest and old limestone pits along the Cross Florida Greenway. The 20 miles of trail connects to over 80 miles of trail that leads to Pruitt Trailhead near Dunnellon. The trail is located at 3080 SE 80th St. in Ocala.

he morning that I drove from Ocala to Orlando International Airport, it was gray and overcast with rain threatening. Florida born and bred, it had been years and years since I had seen snow, but once overseas, snow I did see as my taxi driver made his way from London’s Gatwick Airport to the London Heathrow Airport from where I departed for Bangkok. From the first on this trip, Bangkok not only did not disappoint but rather exceeded my expectations. I have a long history with Thailand’s capital, having travelled here many times in the course of my lifetime. Actually, I could live in Bangkok were I not already committed to making Ocala my permanent home. This time the visit to Bangkok was idyllic. Arriving at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Hotel, I was immediately greeted by Bangkok public relations specialist Etienne de Villiers. He commented on how very professional I looked in my business suit which was much appreciated after such long and draining flights. I did not go through check-in but was promptly taken to my elegant room awash in orchids. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Hotel is one of the best hotels in the world. This fact is richly documented. Not only do the international jet setters visit, but also the upper rungs of Thai society. Its standards of excellence are legendary and date back to 1876 when it was built and opened as The Oriental. Today, guests have the opportunity to look back over its colorful history and learn stories of its prestigious past. For over 130 years, the Mandarin Oriental has been a favored locale for such celebrated authors as Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, James Michener, Graham Greene and Noel Coward. Some of the hotel’s restaurants and its magnificent spa are located on the opposite bank of the Chao Phraya River, known as “the river of kings.” The hotel’s ferry is fast,

comfortable and decorated with fairy lights. My most sumptuous dinner during my stay was at their Sala Rim Naam restaurant, a pavilion that serves not only savory Thai Cuisine, but also classical Thai dance. The shows are staged nightly and offer graceful performances by beautifully costumed dancers. A highlight of any stay in Bangkok is a visit to the storied Grand Palace. No visitor should miss touring the Grand Palace complex which dates back to 1782 and is made up of the royal residence, throne halls, government offices and the famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha is actually a single piece of carved jade. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is one of the most revered sites in Thailand. Their sacred image wears seasonal costumes which are changed three times a year in ceremonies presided over by his majesty King Rama X. During part of my stay in Bangkok, I joined my small tour group with Grand Circle Cruise Line. I would be with them the remainder of my time in Southeast Asia. From Bangkok, we flew to our first city in Myanmar. Myanmar is the official name of the

country while many still refer to it in the vernacular by its former name of Burma. What a study in contrasts it was from the opulence of the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Hotel to the undeveloped nation of Myanmar. Still experiencing remnants of authoritarian rule by a military junta, Myanmar has only been open for tourism in the past several years. Myanmar lies cushioned between two monoliths – China to the east and India to the west – while Laos, Thailand and Bangladesh share borders to the east, south and west, respectively. Enjoying a coastline on the Andaman Sea and about twice the size of Wyoming, its best months for tourism are from December to February. The country has a rich history which is too long to recount here but of note is the fact that the British took over Myanmar in 1885. The British ruled Myanmar until shortly after World War II and many are hopeful that true democratic reforms will take hold in Myanmar in future years. My first stop after flying out of Bangkok was Yangon (still called ‘Rangoon’ by many).

Yangon is Myanmar’s biggest city and was the capital until 2005. Of special interest in Yangon is the Shwedagon Pagoda, a temple which tradition dates to 2,500 years old and is considered to be the most sacred site in all of Myanmar. The pagoda itself is a 326-foot stupa that is said to be sheathed with more gold leaf than is contained in all the vaults of the Bank of England. The hilltop shrine is a legendary spiritual icon for Myanmar’s Buddhist population and has been maintained and rebuilt over the millennia, surviving both wars and natural disasters. During my stay in Yangon, I was awestruck by a 217-foot-long reclining Buddha statue at the Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda. This impressive statue is adorned with a crown of diamonds while at the feet are 108 auspicious symbols on its soles. The reclining Buddha is not sleeping, but rather lost in the highest form of existence and contemplation. In Myanmar, Buddhas are everywhere and represent both a divine figure and a human being. It was in Bagan that I embarked on my ship, the RV Paukan, a small cruising bou-

tique hotel. I had a single stateroom and the sundeck was ideal for viewing the settlements on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. With 27 passengers and 27 cruise staff, the service was all that was to be desired. Also known as the Irrawaddy River, the Ayeyarwady River springs from its headwaters in the eastern Himalayas and stretches about 1,250 miles to its delta on the Andaman Sea. Rudyard Kipling wrote of this lifeline of Myanmar as “the road to Mandalay.” Later, I had a truly scenic view of the Ayeyarwady River in Mingun where I explored the “unfinished pagoda” called the

The ambitious King Bodawpaya in 1790 wanted to build the largest pagoda in the world at a height of almost 500 feet. The king died before the work could be completed and even the half-finished project is an impressive sight. I paid for this trip out of my own pocket. That said, I honestly can say that I enjoy travelling with Grand Circle Cruise Line because one observes day-to-day slices of locals’ lives, not just jaunting between tourist meccas. On my last night aboard the RV Paukan, there was a farewell dinner accompanied by local dancers in a traditional show. With temperatures in the 90s most days, my week-long river cruise came to an end

too soon. From Mandalay, I flew to Bangkok for the night before a 30-hour sprint over the International Date Line to Tokyo, San Francisco and finally landing at midnight in Orlando. I had much time to reflect on all that I had seen and felt during my stay in first Bangkok then Myanmar. As my head rested comfortably in my airplane’s seat, one scene in Myanmar literally haunted me. It was on a day that I just had taken a ferry across the Ayeyarwady River outside Yangon near the start of my river cruise. The ferry took me to a smaller city of about 25,000 people, sort of a bedroom community of Yangon workers. My tour group was going to the market and it was late in the afternoon and before me was a lake where people, including children, were hurrying with handmade water containers to fill them for their drinking water. Each person had a 1-inch square of paper to give to the tax official at the gate of the lake that was fenced off. This tiny piece of paper

All the men, women and children were hurrying because they were only allowed to draw water from the lake for two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. This is how these poor people get their fresh drinking, cooking and bathing water. Still, there is hope for improvement. Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, known locally as “the lady,” was released from house arrest in 2010 and is now the visible symbol of the Myanmar citizenry’s prayers for a better future. This Nobel Peace Prize winner carries the hopes of 50 million-plus people on her small frame. Myanmar is a country that has been closed off from the world for years and still retains the cronyism of the long ruling military junta. Change is coming, but too slowly for some.

Right Strides

ecently, the Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club was the scene for the Goin’ for Gold fundraiser for Stirrups ‘n Strides Therapeutic Riding Center. Guests enjoyed popular tunes performed by Gainesville band, Moondog, while sipping drinks and sampling delicious hors d’oeuvres as they surveyed theme baskets and auction items before a sumptuous dinner. Renee Phifer, Stirrups ‘n Strides rider, spoke of her fantastic dream-come-true experience as the youngest Special Olympics Equestrian Team competitor and her wonderful accomplishment of bringing home three gold medals for Team USA. Stirrups ‘n Strides provides therapeutic horseback riding and carriage driving to anyone with physical, mental or emotional challenges. Such horse encounters improve the quality of life for those individuals with the opportunity for emotional, educational and physical growth through horsemanship and

competition. Stirrups ‘n Strides is quintessentially representative of Ocala/Marion County. Stacey Spence, pastor and board president, states, “The Goin’ for Gold committee worked diligently to provide a way for others, who believe in our mission, to give. We provided a holistic picture of our organization and snapshot golden moments of what our program means to our riders, volunteers and staff. This event is about much more than raising money. It is about elevating individuals so they can be all they want to be by setting goals and achieving them. It is also about how the horse and rider team up to win the day.” The success of the fundraiser was due in large part to the giving spirit of sponsors, donors and volunteers. Silver sponsor for the event was the Ocala Star Banner. Bronze sponsors included TJM Promos and Jim and Jan Olson. Former Stirrups ‘n Strides board president Jim Olson also acted as emcee and observed, “It has been one of the greatest joys of my life, to be involved with Stirrups ‘n Strides for many years. As a donor, supporter, event emcee, board president and volunteer, I always have felt that I received more than I gave. I can’t imagine a better way to use time and resources.” The intent for the funds raised from this event was to further enable the center to complete Phase 3 of their Striding into

Helping Hands Helping People Passing it on and helping people go from insecure to secure. ›› BY BEN BAUGH

od’s reach is closer than we think. A chance encounter at an area fast food restaurant in Ocala in 2008 would be the starting point of a transformation that would affect thousands of lives and impact an entire community. “I was in Burger King putting away my food at lunch, and a gentleman came up to me; I could tell he was homeless,” said Brad Dinkins, founder and chairman of Helping Hands Foundation Inc. “He wanted a place to stay. I put him in my pickup truck, attempted to take him to several motels, but they wouldn’t accept him.” However, every challenge has its own propitious purpose – one that can make an untoward situation a miraculous one. If you were to look deep enough, the answer to a problem can be as close as your fingertips. “We had this building next door – an apartment building,” Dinkins said. “(It) needed to be renovated and fixed up. I brought him over and told him, ‘We don’t have electricity in this building, but you can stay in the apartment if you like.’ He said, ‘Oh yeah, that would be great.’” Dinkins realized the man had some type of mental health disorder and was able to get him the help he needed. He struggled at first with the idea of taking medication, but eventually began to thrive in an environment where people genuinely cared, loved and made him feel accepted. After two years, he no longer needed to take the prescribed medication. That initial encounter would flourish into Dinkins reaching out to a number of men who were at the Salvation Army and providing

them with an opportunity to work to rehabilitate the building next door. Many of those men had worked in the circus and were contending with alcohol and drug addiction. It was then that Dinkins asked himself if he was supposed to be involved with such an undertaking. He was already involved in operating a real estate business and construction company and he would rely on a higher source for an answer. Dinkins would go home, pray and read his Bible. He said he thought that if God was leading him to do this that would be fine, but he didn’t want to let his emotions carry him away. “The first verse I came across in the Bible as I’m studying was Paul writing to the Romans, and he was talking to the Christians and telling them a list of things that they should be doing, and one of them was to practice hospitality,” Dinkins said. “I always looked at that particular scripture as inviting people into your home, feeding them and blessing them. That was my concept, but I felt the urge to study the original Greek words of that verse. And the literal meaning of that verse in Greek ‘is to pursue loving strangers; don’t wait for them to come to you.’” As Dinkins studied more, he came to the realization that God was talking to him through the scriptures. “That’s the way I live my life: not my will, but his will. We don’t want to invest our time, money and energy in something that’s not eternal.” It was that initial step in helping one

man that would soon transform the lives of hundreds of others, that would provide an additional impetus, and would lead Dinkins in the summer of 2009 to file for corporate papers making Helping Hands a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and in December 2009, his vision was realized. Not affiliated with any specific church or civic club, Helping Hands has continued to evolve from its nascent stages by offering those who are in need of a place to stay an opportunity to heal mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, a chance to transition back into the work place, change their lives while being a positive impact on others through their testimonials, realizing that all things can be accomplished through accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior. Nearly four years ago, Helping Hands became a discipleship ministry where people staying at the facility had the opportunity to receive the Lord, said Dinkins. Helping Hands has helped those struggling with drug addiction and mental health disorders overcome adversity, restoring their self-confidence, self-esteem through having faith in themselves and through an even more powerful source. “We have devotionals in the morning on Wednesdays and Fridays,” said Dinkins. “We’re really a support. It’s amazing the people we’ve taken in; they have such great talent and abilities.” The initial building purchased by Dinkins for the organization was on property that his father had owned. Helping Hands

currently has two residential facilities: one located at the Cascades behind the office fronts on NE 2nd Street and purchased in 2010; the other an apartment building ocated on NE 26th Avenue and purchased in 2011. It has eight two-bedroom units and is used exclusively for women and children. It’s referred to as “our women’s and children’s home,” said Dinkins. “Our mission is to provide opportunities for the down-and-out to succeed in life, no matter what their background is and what’s happened to them,” said Dinkins. Those who are involved with the organization counsel those who stay at the facility. Dinkins’ son now serves in a leadership capacity and Helping Hands now holds a Thursday night meeting for the men. Helping Hands has thrift stores in Silver Springs Shores and in Ocala on the State Road 200 West corridor. In both cases, Dinkins owns the shopping plaza where the retail outlets are located. “One of the reasons I justified having the thrift stores, was it provided the ladies with an opportunity to get back into the work force,” Dinkins said. Now more than a decade old, Helping Hands has transitioned from being a place that primarily worked with men into a place providing housing for women and children. Helping Hands allows individuals or families to mend after they’ve suffered abuse, indignity and adversity. It’s a place where people have gone from insecure to secure, said Dinkins. “One of my favorite verses from the Bible, of course when Jesus died on the cross, he took our sins, but God says in the Bible, ‘once you do that, I’ll remember your sins before you’ve made a conscious decision,’” said Dinkins. “God made a conscious decision to never bring up the past to a person . . . the Lord loves us despite what we’ve done and said in our past. ringing a pet home for the first time - even if you already have other pets - can be an exciting moment. However, it’s important to involve the whole family in discussing whether your family will foster or adopt, and what each family member’s responsibilities with the new pet will be. It also takes preparation and patience to ensure a smooth transition. Regardless of the type of companion you’re welcoming into your home, adjusting to a new environment can be overwhelming and could lead to anxiety. Because dogs and cats do not communicate like humans, they often express anxiety by misbehaving, which makes it important to be willing to spend the first several days bonding with your pet and forming good habits. Visit your local shelter or animal welfare organization to complete necessary forms and background check, and consider this advice from the experts at PetSmart to help set you and your new furry friend up for a successful homecoming. INTRODUCE YOUR PETS When bringing a new pet into the family, set up a proper introduction with any current pets to help make the transition easier. For dogs, schedule the initial meeting at a neutral environment outside of your home. Cats typically need a more gradual introduction to get comfortable. Start by keeping your felines in separate rooms with their own litter boxes, but let them see each other periodically through a glass window to get used to sharing the space. PET-PROOF YOUR HOME Because new pets can be especially curious and jump onto high surfaces or squeeze into small spaces, ensure clothes, cleaning supplies, electrical wires or cords and other potential hazards are out of reach. Also create a pet-friendly space with a bed or another way to divert attention, such as a scratching post for cats. When building out the schedule, keep in mind that younger pets typically need to relieve themselves more often, and puppies and kittens also often require more exercise than older pets. Plan

time for daily walks, solo playtime and trips to the park or backyard to play fetch. KEEP YOUR PET HAPPY AND HEALTHY While a proper diet and plenty of exercise can go a long way toward keeping your pet feeling his or her best, ensure your furry friend looks the part by regularly bathing him or her and maintaining a healthy coat by brushing often with at-home grooming tools. It is also important to find a veterinarian who’s equipped to handle breed-specific needs and schedule routine checkups to stay on top of vaccines and any potential health concerns. Ranger On Duty BY BRANDON KALLOO, MARION COUNTY PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER Marion County park rangers have the challenging roles of maintaining parks 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. They work long hours in the elements and lead staff responsible for more than 40 park sites, which include boating access, sports fields and hiking trails, as well as playground areas for children of all abilities.

Gehman earned a two-year forestry degree through SUNY-ESF Ranger School in Wanakena, New York in 2007. She said it was challenging, but that it prepared her for an exciting career. Her classes began first thing in the morning and ended at five just like a job – and a job it was. Instructors led classroom-style academics, teaching them environmental science and forestry management. Some of the course material focused on dendrology (study of trees) and entomology (study of insects). The real challenge came in the afternoons when the students would apply what they learned in the classroom out in the

field. Some classes were as mundane as learning about pine trees, while others were full-on survival lessons, complete with orienteering, swimming and fishing techniques. They even learned about logging! “During our first semester, we created our own forestry management plan which explained what we were going to harvest that year,” said Gehman. “It also had to include our recommendations for the land over the next 25 years. That spring we harvested and logged trees.” Most of Gehman’s classmates went on to become loggers or park rangers like herself. She worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation from 2007 to 2009, Vermont State Parks from 2009 to 2014 and eventually moved to Florida in 2014. Although her appreciation for the outdoors grew in college, it was cemented years prior while growing up in the green foothills of the Cascade Mountains. She and her friends would go out to explore, build forts, camp and hike for miles. Gehman still carries that sense of adventure with her today as an adult and hopes to retire doing what she loves. “Sometimes you go into a park, and it’s like ‘wow!’” said Gehman. “You sit there for a minute and breathe and it’s pristine, it’s quiet. Those are my favorite moments.”

ark rangers have a large array of dayto-day tasks focused on keeping properties clean, safe and accessible. If a tree topples over, blocking a trail overnight, park rangers chop it up and move it out of the way. They also inspect bridges, piers and playground equipment, repairing or replacing broken parts. Park rangers ensure patrons are adhering to safety guidelines and are part of prescribed fire burn teams. They also clean and sanitize park locations routinely to keep visitors healthy. Marion County park rangers must be able to safely operate a number of tools including ATVs, chainsaws and wood chippers. They are entrusted with monitoring hundreds of acres of heavily-wooded areas and have to be ready for anything that might come up. “I have a fun job where every day is an adventure,” said Erika Gehman. “You never know what you’re going to find when you come into work.” Gehman is the first woman to work as a Marion County park ranger and she is responsible for nearly 900 acres of park lands. Her areas of responsibility include Baseline Road Trailhead, Blue Run Park of Dunnellon and KP Hole Park. “Since accepting the position as central park ranger, Erika has improved relationships with community partners,” said Jim Couillard, Parks and Recreation director. “She is devoted to her team and fosters a positive work environment. Erika continues to impress us with her ability to step into any task and succeed.” Gehman sets high expectations for her crew and said they never fail to deliver. “I have the best team,” said Gehman. “They help me just as much as I help them. We always give our best and work well together because we want to see each other succeed and grow.”

t’s hard to believe the year is past the halfway mark. While the first part of this year is one for the record books, we believe summer, in all its hot and humid glory, has so much to offer that it begs for outdoor activities and fun in the sun. Now more than ever, we find ourselves escaping to explore the great outdoors: taking more walks, enjoying bike rides and splashing around the local pool are favorite pastimes enjoyed by many. Did you ever stop and think about all the parks that are around your city? July is National Park and Recreation Month and, honestly, we could all use a little celebration this year. It’s an important time to acknowledge the significance of our parks, the benefits they provide to the community and the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen. Ocala boasts an impressive 43 parks within its city limits, including everything from pocket parks tucked away in neighborhoods to large scale parks in the heart of downtown. Chances are you’ve enjoyed one of these gems. Not only do our park systems

preserve the natural beauty within our cities, they provide a backdrop for our memories, opportunities for healthy activities and occasions for learning. Parks ven raise our property values and enhance our economic growth. This year’s theme for Park and Recreation Month, “We Are Parks and Recreation,” is intended to celebrate the people that make our community’s parks great places and spaces for us to enjoy. The City of Ocala’s Recreation and Parks Department staff works tirelessly to create an atmosphere that every person can enjoy. From sunrise to sunset, these essential workers provide a service to our community that often goes overlooked. Imagine your favorite park. Now imagine if no one sustained the greenspaces, inspected the equipment, maintained the recreation facilities or park amenities. Your favorite park would look a little bleak. But ensuring that the parks are ready for residents is only one of the monumental tasks that fall to this department. Aside from the physical maintenance of our park systems, these workers create

programming that keeps people engaged and physically active. During the health crisis that took over our nation this year, many quickly realized that city parks and the activities we enjoy in them were considered “essential services.” Ocala’s Recreation and Parks team rose to the challenge and created 95 educational and activity videos to help alleviate the burden parents faced while keeping kids busy at home and in the park. Many people enjoy events that take place throughout our city, but few realize the team effort it takes to organize and implement these entertainment opportunities. Setting up stages, chairs, tents, booking talent, securing vendors and making sure everything goes as planned – that’s just another day in the life of a recreation and parks professional. The goal is always to make sure that the community is having fun and remaining safe, even if it means long hours. Members of the City of Ocala Recreation and Parks staff are passionate about their jobs and the services they provide. They embrace the city’s vision, “To make Ocala a great place to live, play, and prosper.” During the month of July, we encourage everyone to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month and the people who make it something worth celebrating.

How To Handle Market Volatility

Looking back at the past few weeks, the market has made some investors nervous. Market volatility can lead to some serious stress but what are the best ways to respond to this uneasy feeling? When dealing with market volatility, it's important to keep several things in mind to avoid making major mistakes.

HAVE A PLAN

It's frequently said that those who fail to plan are planning to fail. When investing, it's important to have a plan. If your plan is to put aside $1,000 or $5,000 a month stick to it. Slow and steady wins the race. Sticking with your plan will allow you to take advantage of the periods when the stock market is down.

KEEP REINVESTING

Dividends and interest tend to keep coming whether the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 500 points or it's up 300 on a given day. It's true that there are situations that will lead some companies to cut or suspend their dividends. However, most companies will keep paying out dividends as long as possible because a cut is a sure-fire way to lose investors and see the price of your company's stock drop like a rock. Dividends from stocks and interest from bonds are two of the best ways to deal with volatility. You should keep reinvesting the capital your investments throw off. When the market is down, you'll be able to buy more shares, and this will add to your flow of dividends and interest. By reinvesting during periods of volatility, you'll be able to increase the power of compounding greatly.

DON'T SELL

Many financial professionals will tell you to avoid selling your investments at the worst possible time is a part of sticking with your plan. Often times, this is an ideal strategy. It can be tempting to sell when the market is down 10% so that you can avoid the next 20% loss. This is generally a bad idea. Time in the market will usually beat attempts to time the market. Although, one exception would be drawing down some money strategically during your golden years. You'll probably want to make quarterly or annual withdrawals regardless of what

the market is doing in that case so that you can fund your living expenses.

REBALANCE

Another important step to take when the market is showing extreme volatility is remembering to rebalance your portfolio periodically. You may have a strategy of rebalancing quarterly, semiannually or yearly. If you have a target allocation of 75% of your portfolio in stocks and 25% in bonds, a major drop in stocks could leave you with 65% in stocks and 35% in bonds. In this instance, you'd sell a chunk of your bonds and move the money into stocks. If you're still in the accumulation phase, you could stop contributing to bonds and put all of your money in stocks until you reach your targeted balance. This will keep you from becoming too overweight in one area and allow you to maintain the proper level of diversification. One big piece of advice that's important to remember during market volatility is to stay the course. If you have a plan, stick to it. This includes making periodic investments as you would if the market were at record highs. Real money is made during market downturns. If your portfolio gets out of balance, it's a good idea to rebalance it in the event of a major market downturn to take advantage of the sale price on stocks. If you have cash sitting on the sidelines, volatility to the down side can be a great time to put that money to work. On June 19th, Kiwanis Club of Ocala held it’s ‘first’ meeting while in the midst of the COVID-19 virus, with some members attending via Zoom.

he honored guest speaker was Sarai Vargas-Vera, the Physician Assistant at Heart of Florida Health Care Centers-Family Medicine. Sarai is a Marion County native and graduate of Emory University School of Medicine. Sarai presented the current updates and findings, along with numbers of cases, regarding the COVID-19 virus. While sharing the additional types of testings and locations, she told of the various results and their medicinal definition. The Heart of Florida Health Centers’ mission is to improve the overall health status of Marion County residents by providing quality primary medical, dental and mental health services to all residents, and primarily to those residents who would not otherwise be able to access the services due to financial limitation and/or lack of health insurance coverage. Kiwanis International is a Global community of clubs, members, and partners, dedicated to improving the lives of children one community at a time. The Courage To Run

John Wellborn Martin emphasizes education and infrastructure as Florida Governor WITH THE HISTORIC OCALA PRESERVATION SOCIETY

ne of Marion County’s native sons played a pivotal role in improving the state. Born in Plainfield in 1884, John Wellborn Martin, a Democrat, would serve as Governor from 1925-1929. Martin during his tenure, which spanned a portion of the roaring twenties, helped shape the state through his efforts to improve Florida’s infrastructure by initiating the state’s highway system. He earned the nickname of the state’s “Most Progressive Governor,” according to the Ocala Star-Banner. However, his influence just wasn’t limited to the state’s roads and transportation. As interest began to increase in Florida, his prescience placed an emphasis on education. Under Martin’s leadership, his innovative and progressive approach found his administration financing public schools through

direct state appropriations, according to the Florida Department of State. It was during this time that he would also provide textbooks gratis to all students through the sixth grade. His influence also resonated statewide through his efforts to restore Florida’s natural resources, reclaiming the Everglades and ameliorating the penal system and improving housing for inmates. He was the first governor to be born in Marion County and had the distinction of having one of the state’s counties being named in his honor. But it was his self-confidence, determination, work ethic and vision that helped Martin attain a number of goals, and would play a role in his helping to transform the state. Martin was born on his family’s plantation in 1884, a place that they had lived on for over a century. He would go onto be educated in the Marion County Common

Schools, where he received only four years of formal education, according to the Ocala Star-Banner. He would distinguish himself as a salesman. But it would be a defining force that would compel him to reach an even loftier goal. He was encouraged by someone, a member of the fairer sex described as the most beautiful woman in Columbia County, to pursue a law degree. His wife, Charlotte “Lottie” Wilt Pepper of Lake City, would be a great encourager and influence on his life. He studied for his law degree during his spare time, when not working as a salesman. He would pass the bar in 1914, according to the National Governors’ Association, establishing a law practice in Jacksonville. He entered politics, when overhearing a man say he didn’t have the courage to run for the office of Mayor of Jacksonville, a post Martin would serve three terms in, before becoming Governor.
