one of my greatest joys highlighting the multitude of charities serving our beautiful city of Ocala and the greater Marion County area. I was blessed to grow up in a household where “giving back” was ingrained not only into my family culture, but into my very being. My mother, Sharon Glassman has been involved in countless of community driven programs over the years, such as the Domestic Violence Center, United Way, and the CF Foundation, just to name a few. So, it was no coincidence that as I was starting out my career at 18 I dove head first into finding a way to better my community.
That’s when I met George Albright, who at the time was a state representative. Seeing my willingness to help, he connected me with our Kiwanis chapter and there I saw first hand how even a small group of likeminded people could change the lives of our community’s less fortunate. One of those likeminded individuals just so happened to be my colleague, Penny Miller. She and I have been working ever since to make sure we give the spotlight to those who make it their life’s mission to help those who cannot help themselves.
Whether it’s assisting the elderly or providing care and opportunities to the developmentally disabled, comforting cancer victims or giving food and shelter to those without homes, these community charities continue to put kindness first. I am continually astonished at the generosity of our residents. At the heart of this city and county lies a simple truth, that we love our neighbors. I am proud to be a part of this strong community and use this platform we call Ocala Magazine as a way to continue highlighting the best parts of the human condition. Please enjoy our 2024 Charity Register and thank you for building a better tomorrow with us.

A Dose of Hope
Hope Clinic provides health care and hope to ‘forgotten population’
BY BRAD ROGERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RALPH DEMILIOFor the past decade, Grow, an Ocala nurse practitioner, has been providing health care on a regular basis to the neediest people in our community. While she has a full-time career as a nurse practitioner and nursing instructor, Grow also makes time to give back to the community.
On the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, starting at 5 p.m., Grow sets up shop at Interfaith Emergency Services’ clinic at 108 N. Pine Ave. in Ocala, where she serves hundreds of uninsured members of our community.
“I wanted to give back to the community, so I approached Interfaith,” said Grow, who added that the clinic is funded largely by her and her husband, Matt.
The clinic, which is staffed totally by volunteers, is called the
Hope Clinic.
She said she sees about 50 patients each month, and a significant number of the patients she sees are suffering from some sort of ongoing illness. The most common ailments she treats are diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, as well as obesity and malnutrition.
“Honestly, probably the biggest thing we provide is letting them know we care -- giving them hope,” said Grow, explaining that she only sees uninsured patients. “That’s why I called it Hope Clinic.”
Grow said better, recurring health care gives them hope. Educating them on the importance of maintaining their health by taking their medications regularly will mean a better life, no matter their circumstances.
And that is where Interfaith comes in. With a grant from the
Marion County Hospital District, Interfaith can provide important medications –specifically, diabetes and psychotropic medicines –at no or little cost to the economically challenged clientele that visits Hope Clinic. For Interfaith, Hope Clinic is a blessing.
“It fills a gap,” said Karla Greenway, executive director of Interfaith. “She serves a kind of population that is pretty much forgotten.”
Greenway said Grow has undoubtedly saved lives because she gets her patients to come in and get diagnosed while also getting them medications at no cost.
“These aren’t people who are going to come in, because even if they see the doctor, they can’t afford the medication,” Greenway said. Interfaith’s medication program, however, allows for them to get ongoing prescriptions to treat their maladies.
Greenway said while Grow already serves hundreds of uninsured patients, the need for her kind of services remains great. “There are probably thousands of people in the community who would be candidates for the Hope Clinic.”
Beyond the humans saved by Grow’s clinic, Greenway said that Ocala’s hospitals also benefit from the Hope Clinic by keeping people who simply need regular medication out of the local emergency rooms.
“This is keeping a lot of people out of the hospitals,” Greenway said. “Hope and the FreeD.O.M. Clinic (another local clinic serving the needy) have saved the hospitals millions and millions of dollars.”
While Grow provides care for recent hospital patients who need follow-up care, as well as sufferers of diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain and other ailments, she said the one aspect of her Hope Clinic practice that has been eye-opening is the amount of men-
tal health issues her patients have.
“Whenever I’m at the clinic, there’s always at least 30 patients scheduled,” Grow said. “There’s no lack of patients.
“And there’s a lot of mental health (problems). Lots and lots of mental health. Every single patient has a psych issue. It’s nonstop ... I knew there was a
great need. I didn’t anticipate the amount of mental health.
“But you’re there. You’re a therapist. You need to let them know you care.”
A big part of Grow’s approach is to educate her patients. Not only about the importance of continuing health care and staying on their medications, but also about the
the medical community in the way of free or reduced-cost services. People and practices like Dr. Patrick Acevedo of Florida Cancer Specialists, the Robert Boissoneault Oncology Institute, cardiologist Dr. Kalpesh Solanki, Care First Imaging, Essential Health Labs and Michelle-O-Grams for mammograms. Hope Clinic also receives an annual donation from the Palmer Foundation.
Because all the money the Grows raise is used for medications and supplies, the clinic depends solely on volunteers to process patients and assist Grow.
“Everybody at our clinic is a volunteer,” she said. “We need more volunteers, if we are going to see more patients.”
Grow’s husband, Matt who works as director of the Ocala International Airport, volunteers at the clinic alongside his nurse practitioner wife. He said one of the things that makes Hope Clinic special is that there are no rules.
“We don’t have rules,” he said. “So, sometimes we make the rules up as we go. It gives us flexibility.”
The Grows say they have a dire need for volunteers, both medical professionals and

lay people. If they had more help, they would expand the days the Hope Clinic is open, and in turn be able to serve more people.
