ARMADA

Tionna took a leap of faith when cancer kept her from the gym. At UF Health, she found a problem-solver who never gave up.

Dr. William Slayton and his team are expanding treatment options for children facing leukemia. He was able to give Tionna a bone marrow transplant from her sister, despite the girls only being a partial match. After 378 days in the hospital, Tionna is back where she belongs — doing cartwheels. And Dr. Slayton is back to searching for new solutions that move medicine forward.

Water Resources

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Wetland Groundwater Recharge Park was held Tuesday, June 5 at the park site with approximately 150 people in attendance. Three to 5 million gallons of treated wastewater will be sent to the Wetland Groundwater Recharge Park every day. The plants in the park will naturally uptake extra nutrients in the water, preventing them from reaching our aquifer, and eventually Silver Springs. The park will also have two and a half miles of walking trails, which will be lined with educational kiosks. The project is expected to be completed in June 2019 and was partially funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the St. Johns River Water Management District. For more information, visit ocalafl.org.

September Is National Preparedness Month

With hurricane season nearly halfway over, your family’s evacuation plan and preparedness kit are likely in place. But what about your critical documents? If disaster knocked on your door, would you have access to important paperwork? Whether it’s a hurricane, fire or other disaster, storing original records and keeping copies of valuable identification, financial and legal documentation is essential to initiating the recovery process. When assembling your critical documentation file, think about materials insurance providers or government assistance programs may require:

› Vital records: birth certificates, marriage certificates,

custody papers

› Identification: driver’s license, passport, social security card › Housing agreements: rental agreement, mortgage, deed › Financial documents: checking account, savings account,

retirement and investment information

› Insurance policies: home, auto, life, flood Once you gather your documents, consider storing hard copies in a fireproof and waterproof safe and/or a safety deposit box. You may also opt to supplement these copies with electronic ones in a password-protected format or encrypted cloud service provider. During National Preparedness Month, Ocala Fire Rescue encourages you to do your part to prepare. As our friends from Ready.gov say, “Disasters don’t plan ahead, you can.” For more information, contact Ocala Fire Rescue at (352) 629-8306.

all it the Big Hammock Race Series’ bling version of a carrot-on-astick motivator. “This is our third BHRS season, and we learned early on that people respond well to being challenged if there’s a reward,” says Karen Donnelly, who with Tina Banner co-own the run/walk fitness series. “It’s been my challenge to design dreamy awards and swag to motivate people to participate in the BHRS. The great thing about our series is that Challenge prizes can be earned by beginning walkers and competitive runners alike.” The BHRS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of providing an all-ages, all-skill levels walk/run fitness challenge for the entire family. The series also gives back to the community by selecting and promoting races that fundraise for a charitable cause each season. The 10-race series officially kicked off with Race No. 1, the Super RockStar Virtual 5K, a self-reported race that can be completed any time or place you choose from July 1 through May 31, 2019. Race No. 2, the first on-site race, is the Cornerstone Leads The Way 5K on September 22 at the Baseline Trailhead Park. “The first step to being eligible for BHRS Challenge awards is to purchase a Season 3 Pass at bighammockraceseries.com. Being a BHRS PassHolder is the only way to earn Score Card points and Challenge awards,” says Donnelly. “The later you join, the more it will cost you. PassHolders who complete Race No. 1 also earn 10 points and a Wild Card to help earn any Challenge Award when redeemed to replace one missed race.” Another benefit to registering as a PassHolder by 11:59pm on September 23 is guaranteeing

your selected Season 3 shirt and ultra lightweight reflective race jacket size. After that date, sizes and availability are first come, first serve. Once you’re a BHRS—Season 3 PassHolder, the fun and the race for the bling and awards begins. PassHolders compete with others in their same BHRS age/gender division. The goal is to complete as many of the BHRS races as possible to earn the most points, swag and awards at the end of the season. “The main focus of the BHRS is a commitment to moving your body and challenging yourself by setting healthy goals,” says Donnelly. “Whether you run or walk, it’s about finishing each race.” Here’s a look at the BHRS— Season 3 Challenge Awards and Medals.

LUCKY CHARM CHALLENGE:

Married to an Irishman, Donnelly says, “I always have fun designing this medal. This year’s features a lucky charm confetti-filled spinner, a horseshoe covered with four-leaf clovers and roses for Derby Day. It also features citrus slices, a nod to good luck in some cultures and the ingredients of sangria.” BHRS PassHolders can earn the Lucky Charm Challenge medal and five bonus points by finishing two races: Sangria Dash 5K on November 10 and Derby Day 5K on May 4, 2019. The medal will be awarded at the Derby Day 5K.

ROCKSTAR VIRTUAL 5K MEDAL: “This is the first year

we have included a virtual race. Anyone, not just PassHolders, can participate in this race. But there’s only 500 spots, and over half were sold in the first month!” says Donnelly. “Every rock star needs a guitar, so this must-have bling is a brightly colored paisley guitar with a pick charm.” To earn the medal, participants must register at

VirtualStrides.com/RockStar3

before spots sell out or by May 31, 2019. The self-reported virtual race can be completed at your own pace all at once or in segments. At completion, participants post results on their Virtual Strides account to receive their medal by mail.

PERFECT 10 GLASS CHALLENGE: “This is the SUPER MEDAL CHALLENGE: “You have to complete all four Super Races to earn this medal,” says Donnelly. “It features a glittery BHRS signature acorn, a ‘4’ for the four Super Races and a slider.” The four Super Races are: Marion County Halloween Run 5K/10K on October 27; Running With The Herd 5K on January 26, 2019; Five Points of Life 5K, Half Marathon and Marathon on February 16-17, 2019; and the St. Paddy’s Day 5K on March 16, 2019. The medal will be awarded at the St. Paddy’s Day 5K.

toughest award to earn. The blue-tinted, pub glass is awarded only to those who complete all 10 of the BHRS—Season 3 races,” says Donnelly. “The Perfect 10 Challenge glass and the seasonending Age Division and Overall awards will be handed out at the Wrap-Up Party, presented by Center State Bank on June 22 at Cone Distributing”

“Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything.” - Steve Jobs › By Judge Steven G. Rogers

T

he right to a jury trial in criminal and civil cases is guaranteed by the 6th and 7th Amendments to the United States Constitution. The greatest threat to a fair jury trial isn’t the lack of citizens willing to serve as jurors but may actually be those small electronic devices—weighing less than 5 ounces—that most of us carry with us on a daily basis, the infamous smartphone. The Florida Standard Jury Instructions for criminal cases are replete with warnings and admonitions concerning a juror’s use of electronic devices during a trial. Words, such as “electronic communication,” “Twitter,” “email,” “cell phones” and “tablets” are listed over 40 times in the jury instructions given by the judge during a criminal trial. The obvious concern is not just with a juror’s communicating with someone about the case but primarily with their conducting unauthorized research on issues presented during the trial. In the case of Tapanes v. State, 43 So.3d 159 (Fla. 4th DCA 2010), the appellate court overturned a defendant’s manslaughter conviction and ordered a

new trial after it was discovered the jury foreperson had used his iPhone to look up the definition of the word “prudence” during a break in the jury deliberations and then shared this definition with the other jurors. Once juror misconduct is established by an interview of the jurors, a new trial is required unless the opposing party can demonstrate there is no reasonable possibility the juror misconduct affected the verdict. The Florida Supreme Court addressed the issue of potential juror misconduct by unauthorized use of smartphones in the case of Dubose v. State, 210 So. 3d 641 (Fla. 2017). In that case, the defendant was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death. After trial, one of the jurors filed Having jurors decide cases based an affidavit alleging some of solely on the evidence and law the jurors used their phones to presented to them during a trial is research the possible meaning of a timeless principle upon which the teardrop tattoos as they believed right to a jury trial is founded. the defendant had a teardrop tattoo on his face. The defendant filed a post-trial motion for a mistrial based upon juror misconduct. At the hearing on the defendant’s motion, the trial judge interviewed the juror and determined the allegations contained in her affidavit were not credible. On appeal, the Florida Supreme Court upheld the defendant’s murder conviction but ordered a new penalty phase proceeding before a new jury. In the 226 years since the Bill of Rights was ratified, the right to a jury trial has been a vital part of the American justice system. Having jurors decide cases based solely on the evidence and law presented to them during a trial is a timeless principle upon which the right to a jury trial is founded. Allowing jurors to conduct their own internet research simply isn’t “prudent.”

Judge Steven G. Rogers currently serves as a circuit court judge. He lives in Ocala with his wife, three children and an extremely spoiled Australian Shepherd.

HELP THE KIDS

Supplies By The Truckload

Students at Oakcrest Elementary School started the new school year with plenty of supplies thanks to Ford of Ocala, the Orlando City Soccer Club and Seminole State College. The goal of filling the beds of Ford F-150s with school supplies was shared among nine dealers, including Ford of Ocala, and benefitted Title I schools in the area. Each organization encouraged their customers, business partners and community to donate supplies. “Giving back to the community has always been a part of our company culture,” says Tom Males, director of marketing at Ford of Ocala. “It was such a surprise to see the huge F-150 truck roll into our parking lot filled to the brim with supplies,” says Diane Leinenbach, principal at Oakcrest Elementary. “Our teachers [were] thrilled to start the new school year with an abundance of supplies that will be put to good use.”

Share the Love Ocala’s goal is to rewrite the stories of children in foster care who have experienced abuse, neglect and abandonment. This summer, 64 children ages 7-11 participated in Royal Family Kids Camp, an overnight, week-long camp that allows kids to feel accepted, loved and celebrated while making precious childhood memories. In addition, 48 campers ages 12-15 participated in Teen Reach Adventure Camp, a three-day camp that builds teamwork, trust and selfvalue while providing hope for the future. To get your business or organization involved in supporting STLO, please join the organization on Friday, October 5 for a Business Breakfast Fundraiser at the Klein Center at the College of Central Florida from 8-9:15am. There is no cost to attend. Contact Tiffany Bagasan, camp director, at (352) 426-8664 or sharetheloveocala.com, to reserve a table.

The Event Of The Year And The Winner Is…

Ocala Main Street was recently presented with two awards at the Secretary of State Florida Main Street Awards Banquet during the Florida Main Street Annual Conference: Ivy on the Square won for Best Rehabilitation Project due to the restaurant’s recent move to a new downtown location, and the Parade of Nations Horse Celebration won in the Best Event category. Each award is the result of a collaboration among key Ocala businesses and supporters.

The Ocala Jockey Club recently announced that the 2017 Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event was honored with the “Small Market Event of the Year” award by the Florida Sports Foundation. The award was presented to the Ocala Jockey Club at the Marion County Board of County Commissioners’ July 17 meeting. “Hosting high-quality athletic events such as this one is a great economic driver and also a wonderful opportunity to introduce our community to visitors from around the world who might be experiencing Marion County for the first time,” says Marion County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Kathy Bryant. The 2018 Ocala Jockey Club International 3-Day Event will take place November 15-18, 2018. This competition is an equestrian triathlon, with each horse and rider combination competing in dressage, show jumping and cross-country.

hosted by Steve Harvey. (Earlier this year Miguel also appeared in an episode of the ABC game show Child Support, as one of the smart kids who help adult contestants with tough questions.) Miguel was chosen to appear on Little Big Shots, and last October, the family flew out to Los Angeles for the filming. At the time Miguel was 7 and a third-grader at Dr. N.H. Jones Elementary School in Ocala, where the family has lived since 2014. Miguel wasn’t the least bit nervous about exhibiting his math skills in front of an audience. He explains that there was a practice session before going on stage with Harvey. In the segment, Miguel rapidly fills in a board of blank squares so that every line—vertical, horizontal and diagonal—adds up to the same number. “It was fantastic! I got to meet new friends who were equally talented,” says Miguel of the show, which aired on March 18, 2018. “It was really an unforgettable experience.”

The Math Maverick

Local math whiz, Miguel Secillano, has lofty aspirations. › By Cynthia McFarland

Most toddlers are content to mash their PlayDoh into rudimentary shapes or even try eating it. Not Miguel Secillano. At age 2, he was meticulously stacking and counting his Play-Doh containers. His parents, Philip and Imee, took note. “I introduced him to math, starting with addition, and he wanted more and more,” recalls Philip. By the time he was 4, Miguel was doing complex math.

› Ocala

“I didn’t know what to give him next, so we bought a math curriculum and just let him do it,” says Philip, noting that one concern of parenting a math genius is not knowing if you’re providing too much challenge or not enough. Miguel’s skill and confidence with numbers grew rapidly. His parents realized that more than just friends and family would appreciate his talents, so they submitted three videos to the NBC television show Little Big Shots,

He may be a math genius, but in many ways, Miguel is like any other 8 year old. He loves going to the beach and Crayola Experience with his family. An avid reader, he also enjoys playing piano, guitar and violin. In addition to riding his bike, Miguel likes working with a coding language computer program. He spends a lot of time with his younger sister, Marcela, 4, and, of course, practicing his math. He’s currently working on his own at the eighth-grade level, including pre-algebra. “In school I still have to do the same math as my classmates,” says Miguel, “but it’s not really boring because it helps me review what I’ve learned before.” Miguel is now a fourth-grader and has plenty of friends at school, but he’s already thinking well beyond his elementary years. “I want to be an aerospace engineer who builds rockets and satellites that go up into space,” he says.

cala/Marion County’s claim to fame as the “Horse Capital of the World” is all about numbers. Big numbers. The boast began when a 1999 U.S. Department of Agriculture Census reported that Marion County had some 35,000 equines, more than any other county in the United States. The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and

Owners’ Association seized the opportunity and began the process to trademark “Ocala/ Marion County: Horse Capital of the World.” The designation became an instant hit, and the FTBOA continues to maintain the trademark. The 2012 USDA Census had Marion County with 37,880 equines, still the most in the country by counties. The 2017 USDA Census will not be released until February 2019. The “Horse Capital of the World” brand is recognized nationwide and globally,” says Powell. “Ocala is the launch pad for champions of all breeds and disciplines. Here we have all the equine sectors, including racing, competition, recreation, veterinary and therapy programs, sales, retirement facilities and sanctuaries. erived from the French term meaning “training,” the U.S. Dressage Federation describes the Olympic sport’s purpose as to strengthen and supple the horse while maintaining a calm and attentive demeanor. This is accomplished based on a pyramid of training principles—straightness, impulsion, connection, relaxation, rhythm and collection. Competitive dressage involves progressively difficult levels and multiple movement tests that must be performed by

horse and rider. Each movement is scored by a judge on a scale of 0-10. While subscribing to that formal definition, Lisa Walsh, the current STRIDE Dressage of Ocala president, offers a simpler one. “Someone gave me a cap that reads ‘Begin The Dance,’ and that to me really describes dressage,” says Walsh, who is also the economic development manager for the City of Ocala. “It’s very much like a dancing partnership with your horse. Sometimes the rider has to lead, and sometimes the rider has to follow. Like any dancing partnership, there has to be trust.” Although a Dancing With The Stars analogy comes to mind, in its early years, dressage was mainly practiced by military mounted units. When dressage became an Olympic sport in 1912, only military officers were eligible to compete. It wasn’t until 1953 that Olympic dressage was opened to all competitors. And today, besides the standard dressage tests, there are special tests written for musical freestyle, multiple horse and rider performers, as well as sport horse breeding. Founded 27 years ago, STRIDE is the acronym for Striving Toward Rider Improvement with Dressage Education. But the 235-member strong club also incorporates driven dressage, which is basically dressage in harness with single or multiple hitches. The main function of STRIDE is to host five schooling shows a year. The club also sponsors many clinics and workshops open to dressage enthusiasts of all levels. “In the beginning, STRIDE held schooling shows in members’ backyards,” says Walsh, who participates in both ridden and driven dressage. “Then slowly as the club numbers grew and horse show venues also became more numerous, the schooling shows became more organized. We are so grateful to have venues like the Florida Horse Park and Grand Oaks Resort.” Walsh points out that “schooling shows play an invaluable role in dressage training and building that partnership, that trust with your horse.” Although not competition dressage shows, schooling shows do include judges. “Coming to one of our schooling shows is a great way to become introduced to dressage,” says Walsh. “We invite riders, drivers and spectators to join us.”

BACK STAGE

PASS BY NICK STEELE

You know the venues, and you’ve watched as talented actors have brought some of your favorite characters to life on stage, but have you ever stopped to think about the influence a director, costume designer or lighting designer has over a production or who chooses the lineup for the season? This fall, we want to introduce you to some of the unsung heroes responsible for setting the stage for our community. 034

HANSEL AND GRETEL › UF Opera Theater › Nov. 18, 3pm › recommended for ages 6 and up Singers from the UF Opera Theatre and the full 80-piece UF Symphony Orchestra bring this classic to life. The staging takes place in front of the orchestra in an enchanting production. THE NUTCRACKER, presented by Dance Alive National Ballet › December 11, 7:30pm This classic tale enchants with a dazzling Sugar Plum Fairy and the handsome Nutcracker Prince, masterful choreography and opulent costumes and sets. This visually mesmerizing spectacle will fill you with holiday cheer.

Meet Pamela Calero Reilly Arts Center

Tell us what you do at the Reilly. I am the executive director for both the Reilly and the orchestra. I’m in charge of development, from developing relationships in the community to fundraising, grants, donations and sponsorships. I also oversee our staff and marketing. What part do you play in developing the season? We have a music director, Matt Wardell. He plans the orchestra performances. With regard to the rest of our programming, he and I collaborate to find interesting things that we want to put in and ones we want to bring back. What show of the upcoming season are you most excited about? I’m really excited about the orchestra’s opening night of the season on October 13. It’s a great night for the community. Meet Eryn Brooks Brewer Ocala Civic Theatre

Describe your role at the theatre. As a costume designer I am responsible for how the actors look on stage, from head to toe. That not only includes what they wear but their hair and makeup.

How does a show make it into your lineup? I work with our artistic director and operations manager, and we decide which acts are the highest quality but will allow us to keep our ticket price down. Our operations manager keeps us on budget, the artistic director focuses on the integrity of the shows and, once we book it, I execute all the marketing and promotions.

Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center What’s your job at The Sharon? I am the booking manager for all of the acts. We host about 125 acts per year and try to offer a variety of entertainment. I want a great mix of genres, from national Broadway touring companies, classical dance, modern dance, nostalgic crooners to more contemporary performers. We also have The Studio, which is a separate black box venue. Our artistic director produces all those shows in-house.

What’s the best part of your job? My not-sosecret “nerdy passion” is that I love making historically accurate costumes—the corsets, crinolines, all of it! I also really love working with our education department, because the kids are so excited and up for anything. It doesn’t matter what I pull, the kids are just super pumped to rock whatever I’ve chosen.

Meet Bob Robins

Hippodrome State Theatre You wear a lot of hats at the Hipp. Tell us about your various roles. I’m the lighting designer in residence, which means that I design the lighting for all of our productions. I begin by working with the director and other designers on a vision for the show. Then I translate those ideas into a technical drawing. After that, I supervise my crew in putting the lights up. It could be hundreds of lights for each show, and we point each, shape it and put color in it. From there, I sit behind the lighting computer and basically paint with the light. I bring up and down the different levels based on that initial concept. Then we go into rehearsals and start adjusting the lights on top of the actors, and we keep making changes until opening night. I’m also the production manager, so I hire all the costume designers, prop designers, scenic designers and sound designers. And I make sure they have all the resources they need to produce their vision. The most challenging aspect of my job is finding qualified artists that can collaborate with us. Collaboration is the key. This fall at the Hippodrome State Theatre › 25 SE 2nd Place, Gainesville › thehipp.org › (352) 375-4477

Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts What does a technical director do? Being a technical director is like being an air traffic controller for the stage. I keep track of personnel, equipment and schedules. I ensure that everything is at the right place at the right time. What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part is when the audience really enjoys themselves and, for a while, they can forget about everything going on outside the theater. For the audience, it’s their special night out. Being part of helping that come to life is what I really enjoy. This fall at the Curtis M. THE KING AND I › November 19, 7:30pm This breathtaking musical, set in Bangkok in the 1860s, tells the story of the unconventional relationship between the King of Siam and a British widow and schoolteacher, whom the king brings in to tutor his many wives and children.

Meet Carlos Francisco Asse Director of Nine at Gainesville Community Playhouse What is it like directing at a community theater? The director has to first research the play and find what the author intended. The director conveys that vision to the actors, the set designer, lighting designer and the costume designer. Then you block the show and rehearse it until you get what you want. In most community theaters, the director also casts the actors. How does working with community-based actors differ? When you’re working with professional actors, they come in knowing the material and you typically rehearse for eight hours a day until the show opens. But with community theater, your actors have day jobs, so they can only rehearse for a few hours a night. That can be a challenge. The most fulfilling thing about it is when you find somebody with very little acting experience and they end up giving you a performance that is astonishing. This fall at Gainesville Community Playhouse › Vam York Theatre › 4039 N.W. 16th Blvd., Gainesville › gcplayhouse.org › (352) 376-4949 NINE, THE MUSICAL › September 14-October 7 Based on Italian director Federico Fellini’s comic masterpiece of biographical filmmaking, this sultry and enchanting musical follows the life of the world-famous film director as he recalls the numerous women in his life. PETER AND THE STARCATCHER › November 23-December 16 A fresh take on the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). The play provides a backstory for the characters of Peter Pan, Mrs. Darling, Tinkerbell and Hook.

PRO M OTI O NAL FE ATU R E

Once Upon a Time... Dream it. Wish it. Do it. A Q&A with the Lady Jeweler

Why did you decide to become a jeweler and start your own business? Well, it’s a long story, but I’ll keep it short. I’ve had several careers, from being a commercial fisherman to a pharmacy technician. I was 28 years old, and Walt and I were getting married. He asked me, ‘Why don’t we open a jewelry store?’ I said, ‘OK,’ and that’s how the dream began back in 1990. Where did you get your training and knowledge? My goal was to become a Graduate Gemologist and Bench Jeweler. I received training as a Graduate Gemologist, Advanced Diamond Setter from the Gemological Institute of America and Bench Jeweler/Goldsmith from Stewarts International School for Jewelers. What are the biggest changes in the jewelry industry since you started? Technology, from texting clients to computerized matrix designs now with 3D printed models. Clients can see, touch and try on their custom piece before it’s made. Who do you think the Lady Jeweler customer is? They are everyday women doing everyday things. They want jewelry that they can wear with that little black dress or blue jeans. They want a jeweler they can trust, with the latest styles and quality at fair prices.

What makes the Lady Jeweler different than any other local jewelry store? I wanted my store to not just be a jewelry store but a jewelry boutique. It has a more relaxing atmosphere. We want clients to stay awhile and get to know us and what we do! I love, when a new customer comes in and says, ‘Oh my, what a beautiful store!’ What’s the advantage of being a Lady Bench Jeweler? Women feel like I understand their ideas and restyle needs better because I’m a lady jeweler. It’s the little things we do every day. We go the extra mile to make each piece just right! Why do you think your business has been so successful? By taking care of our customers and their jewelry, they are our number one priority. Having a friendly and knowledgeable staff who love what they do. Keeping up with the latest trends and advancements in the industry. Being invlolved and giving back to our community. And our location—Lady Jeweler has been located in the heart of downtown Ocala since 1990. What’s your favorite personal piece of jewelry? My bridal rings, even though I have upgraded (bigger diamond) and redesigned it a few times over the years. When I put them on, I know how blessed I am to have found my best friend and partner for life, Walt. What is the Lady Jeweler’s specialty? The Lady Jeweler specializes in ‘Will You Marry Me?’ diamonds of all shapes and sizes. We do make dreams come true.

History In The Making PHOTOS BY PINK RAE PHOTOGRAPHY, PINKRAEPHOTO.COM

For Susan and Kyle, choosing Silver Springs State Park as their venue felt like coming home. “Kyle and I have a ton of history with Silver Springs,” says Susan, who was married on March 10, 2018. “His mom used to work at the park, so he practically grew up knowing the ins and outs of the entire place. My dad used to take me to Silver Springs every day after school as a treat. It’s heartwarming knowing that a place that meant so much to us as children now means so much to us as a married couple.” What helpful tip would Susan give for brides-to-be? “Simply breathe and enjoy your day, because in the end, you are marrying your best friend—and that alone is magical.”

A sucker for barn weddings, Hannah knew exactly what she was searching for in a venue—and she and her husband, Troy, found it at Your Wedding Barn for their ceremony and the College of Central Florida’s Klein Center for the reception. “The barn smells like fresh wood; it has decorative market lights, a big bridal suite attached and a beautiful field behind it,” says Hannah, who was married on May 19, 2018. The couple took care to make sure their ceremony was uniquely theirs. “Troy and I took sand from the yards of our childhood homes and poured them together into a sand unity box,” Hannah says. “We wanted it to represent our families coming together as one.”

More than anything, Chloe and Brent, who were married at the Double S Red Barn on April 14, 2018, wanted their guests to have fun and be comfortable. “We’re very laid back and didn’t want a formal wedding,” says Chloe. “Most people wore jeans and boots or sundresses. I loved seeing how much fun everyone else was having.” Chloe’s favorite elements of the wedding? “I loved that we were married outside under the oak trees. Hunger Pangs A well-known psychological theory suggests that your physical state can affect your emotional state and how you perceive your surroundings. The most well-known example of this phenomenon is being “hangry.” At this point, we become so hungry it begins to negatively influence our mood. On a scientific level, hunger triggers the autonomic nervous system and hormones, which share a direct link with emotions. If you know you’re sensitive when it comes to your hunger, eat a filling breakfast and pack snacks during the day in order to prevent a rumbling stomach. To ward off irritability, it’s important to remind yourself of your hunger. Recognizing the source of your frustration helps to make you feel more in control. POINT & CLICK DINNER MADE EASY

Available to Prime members, these features automatically ship products to your home. Delivery services powered by apps and websites have brought ease of access to customers everywhere. Those who aren’t able-bodied or who may not have a mode of transportation can now shop quickly and effectively, without compromising quality, from their residence. Beyond The Average Burger

Burgerim brings endless flavor combinations and unique menu items to Ocala foodies.

W

ith 792 possible flavor combinations to try, it’s safe to say Burgerim has sandwiches on their menu you simply can’t get anywhere else. During their grand opening on September 8, foodies can go crazy with unheard of combinations—fried egg atop falafel, anyone?—while everyone in the family can still find something they’ll love. Burgerim offers their signature 2.8- to 3.2-ounce patties in singles, packs of two or three, or in party boxes of up to 16 when sharing with a group. Ordering begins with choosing your meat, a deliciously daunting task with so many options. Guests can stick to a classic beef patty or try something more out-of-the-box, like a dry-aged beef or wagyu patty. Lamb, turkey, chicken and salmon are all on the menu, too, if a traditional burger doesn’t strike your fancy. Vegetarian eaters are also

welcome, with lentil, tofu, carrot and onion veggie patties on deck and handcrafted falafel made in-house. Next, stack those patties on white or wheat buns. Diners looking to eat lighter or with dietary restrictions can also opt for fresh, crisp lettuce wraps. Burgerim’s menu really shines when it comes to their toppings. Ask for a signature style for tried-and-true topping tastes. For example, ordering Cowboy style gets you patties topped with cheddar, barbecue sauce, onion rings and bacon. And not for the faint-of-heart, Caliente style comes with pepper jack, jalapenos, habanero sauce and Cajun spice. Of course, it may be more fun to come up with your own creation. With 24 toppings to choose from, including veggies, cheeses, sauces and more, you really can’t go wrong. Pair up your patties with fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings or a half-and-half order of two options, and you’re well on your way to burger nirvana. Stop by Burgerim to taste other fan favorites, like chicken wings, salads, sweet shakes and more. Burgerim also carries a wide selection of beer and wine to accompany your one-of-a-kind creations.

Burgerim › 4414 SW College Road, Suite 1460, Ocala › (352) 236-5552 › burgerim.com

Your new favorite burger joint recently celebrated its grand opening in the Market Street at Heath Brook. At Burgerim, you build your burger just the way you want it, choosing between three buns, six sauces, nine unconventional toppings and 11 patties. Will you choose the dry-aged beef, Merguez beef (seasoned with cumin, chili pepper, garlic, paprika and roasted pepper) or the wagyu beef, regarded as the finest quality beef available in the U.S.? And those are just a few of the selections! Burgerim also offers a variety of chicken, fish, meat-free options and salads to suite your dietary needs. Once you select your burger, go crazy with the toppings, from a plain burger for the little ones to an extravagant explosion of flavors for yourself. The food is always freshly made and guaranteed to please even the hungriest of appetites. Family and party-size portions are also available, as is catering. The stylish, modern décor of the restaurant is unlike any fast-food place you’ve seen. But the convenience of fast, friendly service is there. Plus, they will offer delivery service in the future! Art is in the air at the Appleton Museum this month, as they roll out an impressive lineup of art classes, activities and workshops for teens, tweens and kids (and adults!) of all ages. The Appleton’s own museum educator, Hollis Mutch, took some time to give us a sneak peek of some of the offerings this fall.

What types of art classes will the museum be offering for children? We have our Art

Exploration series, which are six-week sessions open to kids ages 7-12. Classes are offered on either Wednesdays after school or Saturday mornings, and each class focuses on a different medium.

Are supplies included? Yes,

everything is included. We have an abundance of supplies thanks to generation donations.

Do participants need to have previous art experience? No

experience is needed. All we ask is

that kids have an open mind and a willingness to try new things.

What about free activities for children? Our First Saturdays

are offered monthly and feature a different activity in the ARTSpace.

Do you have programs specifically for teens? Yes!

AppleTeens is an art class offered every other month. Each class will consist of a different theme.

Last, but not least, what’s on tap for adults? For adults,

we have our Art 101 workshops on Tuesday mornings, a monthly acrylic art class and a number of clay classes and special workshops coming up in the fall and spring.

he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association recognized the Florida-bred champions for 2017 at its annual awards banquet and gala recently held at the Circle Square Cultural Center. The star of the night was World Approval who took home several trophies, including FTBOA Florida-bred Horse of the Year. World Approval is owned by Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation and bred in Florida under the name of her Live Oak Stud. Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation also was named the Florida Owner of the Year and Live Oak Stud was named the Florida Breeder of the Year. The FTBOA is a not-for-profit association with the mission of promoting the Florida thoroughbred industry. The FTBOA represents more than 1,300 thoroughbred breeders and owners internationally who breed, raise, sell, train and race horses born in the state of Florida. This year’s Red & Gold Gala benefited Florida Thoroughbred Charities. Funds go to support the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at Lowell Correctional Institute. This is the only program of its kind where women inmates are paired with retired racehorses to earn an equine certification degree. Once they are released, the women earn gainful employment here in the Horse Capital

of the World. Horses are helped, and lives are forever changed. There are over 50 thoroughbreds currently residing at the farm and 15 women per educational series go through. It is an amazing success story since only one percent of these women return to prison after release. Lonny T. Powell, CEO and executive vice president, observes that, “FTBOA believes the care and support of retired thoroughbreds is a common sense responsibility shared by all who participate in the racing and breeding industry. What makes our particular horse retirement program different at Lowell Correctional Institute is that it also cares for and heals people as well as horses. That is an awesome combination. The FTBOA and our charitable arm, the Florida Thoroughbred Charities, are proud of the role we play with this unique farm.” Tammy Gantt, associate vice president/member services & events, says, “I don’t think many people realize that Florida Thoroughbred Charities is the sole source of funding for Second Chances Farm, aka the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at Lowell. This valuable community program would not be possible if it were not for the support of the generous equine industry, businesses and charitable community. Year after year, for over 18 years, the community outpouring of charitable dollars has been inspiring and really a powerful message that the program changes lives for those who are in it and for those who give to support it.” Farm manager John Evans oversees equine experts who work with the women so that they gain valuable knowledge that they can use in equine jobs upon their release. Nashayshar R. is a participant who says, “This prison sentence has turned out to be a bridge between a troubled life to one full of learning and helping others. This last year being behind bars and working with horses has been a treasure.” To arrange a gift, set up an endowment or donate goods and services call (352) 629-2160.
