$10 million in rental assistance with $9 million more on the way By James Blevins james@ocalagazette.com On Nov. 16, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners (MCBOCC) approved another contract with the United Way (UW) of Marion County to administer a second round of Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA2) money received from the federal government in the amount of $8,734,572.30. The first round of rental assistance (ERA1), launched in late April of this year, resulted in over 4,500 registrations for assistance and a total of 2,051 households receiving funds, according to United Way of

Marion County CEO Scot Quintel. To date, Quintel said the program has distributed $9,801,317.10. “Through the summer, we were averaging over 25 new registrations a week,” he added. “That number has recently slowed down to 10-15 per week.” The rental assistance program was first established to help those who have experienced a reduction in income, incurred significant costs, or other financial hardship due to COVID-19. MCSO deputies seek victim protections By Jennifer Hunt Murty jennifer@ocalagazette.com According to attorneys for the Marion County Sheriff ‘s Office (MCSO), the identities of three deputies involved in a fatal shooting in Fort McCoy on Nov. 15 are protected under a law meant to protect victims from harassment by their attackers. The law is called Marsy’s Law. Approximately three hours following the incident, the MCSO posted to Facebook:

“At approximately 7:40 p.m. on November 15, 2021, deputies responded to the area of NE 140th Avenue and NE 245th Street Road, (Orange Springs/Fort McCoy) in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies located a deceased male at the residence. They were then met by a man, who engaged them with a shotgun. Mayor brings campaign hostility to Hanukkah celebration By James Blevins james@ocalagazette.com Community members are upset after campaign vitriol was introduced into the City of Ocala’s Hanukkah celebration on the downtown square. aimed at Manal Fakhoury, his opponent in the September mayoral electoral race, according to several Mayor Guinn spectators present at the Nov. 28 event. Guinn won the Sept. 21

election with over 65% of the vote. Fakhoury had 34%.
