A Charmed Challenge
Ocala Style has the exclusive first look at the Lucky Charm Challenge medal for the Big Hammock Race Series—Season 2, presented by the Prime Mortgage Group. › By JoAnn Guidry
C
all the Lucky Charm Challenge a two-race rainbow. But instead of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the prize is a magical medal. “In talking with participants after the first year of the Big Hammock Race Series, we discovered that many people came out to participate in one race,” says Karen Donnelly, a runner and co-founder of the BHRS. “While that is great, we decided to do something to motivate them to take part in at least two races this year. So we came up with the Lucky Charm Challenge, which consists of the Blueberry Horseshoe 5K and the St. Paddy’s Day 5K. Anyone who finishes both races will get a Lucky Charm Challenge medal and five extra series points.” Donnelly, who owns and operates Plaid Frog Creative Resources, has designed all of the BHRS medals since the series inception. She got particularly creative with the Lucky Charm Challenge medal. “The Lucky Charm Challenge medal is magical,” says Donnelly. “It’s a collaboration of elements from both the Blueberry Horseshoe and the St. Paddy’s Day races. It features blueberries, shamrocks, a stained-glass rainbow, a spinner and a horseshoe for extra good luck. It’s one of my favorite medals that I’ve designed.” And Donnelly stresses, “These races are for both runners and walkers. Everyone can finish them at their own pace and still earn the medal.” Participants who finish the Blueberry Horseshoe 5K (February 19) and the St. Paddy’s Day 5K (March 18) will be able to collect the Lucky Charm Challenge medal at the conclusion of the latter. Like all the races in the BHRS, the Lucky Charm Challenge races also support charitable causes. Money raised from the Blueberry Horseshoe 5K and St. Paddy’s Day 5K will be earmarked for United Way of Marion County, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and NAMI Florida. Tina Banner, BHRS co-founder and executive vice president of United Way of Marion County, says, “The Lucky Charm Challenge gives more people in our community an opportunity to be part of the BHRS. It also encourages people to get out there and participate in a healthy activity. After all, we started the BHRS as a health initiative and helping our community to be healthier continues to be our mission.” Another new BHRS prize is the Great 8 Glass, which can be earned by finishing all eight races in the series. There is also a BHRS awards party scheduled for July 22, 2017, at Gateway Bank, with the official time yet to be set. C
ourt filings asking a judge to require a person or corporation to do—or not do—something are a common and everyday occurrence. However, there are unique filings requesting court action on an emergency or expedited basis. Such requests are referred to as “extraordinary writs.” A Writ of Mandamus is a request for a lower court or government official to perform a “nondiscretionary ministerial act.” Basically, it’s a request for a judge to order someone to do his or her job. Governor Rick Scott was the subject of a Petition for Writ of Mandamus in 2014. Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll resigned in March 2013, and Florida law required the governor to appoint a successor to serve the remainder of the term. When he failed to appoint a new lieutenant governor, a former social studies teacher named Barbara DeVane filed a Petition for Writ of Mandamus with the Florida Supreme Court on January 6, 2014. Ms. DeVane’s petition requested the Florida Supreme Court to enter an order requiring the governor to appoint a replacement lieutenant governor. However, there are circumstances when an immediate appellate review may be needed prior to the end of the case. Such requests are made by a Petition for Writ of Certiorari. A few years ago I was presiding over a civil case against a large grocery store chain. The plaintiff requested the store to produce the store’s surveillance videos as well as other documents and reports through discovery. The store objected by claiming these items were privileged and confidential. After a lengthy hearing on the issue, I agreed with the plaintiff ’s position and required the store to produce the requested items. Knowing the proverbial damage would have already been done if, after the trial, the appellate court later found the requested items were confidential, I was not surprised when the store filed a Petition for Writ of Certiorari seeking immediate review of my decision. As often happens in many civil cases, the case was settled prior to the appellate court issuing a ruling on the petition.

Arguably, there are two types of inmates currently serving sentences in Florida’s prison system… those who have filed a Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus and those who will file a Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus. A Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus is a request for the court to grant the release of a person who has been unlawfully detained or restrained. Inmates typically use these petitions to claim their sentences were illegal or their accrued “gain time” was incorrectly calculated. Because Petitions for Writ of Habeas Corpus do not require payment of a filing fee, it is understandable why an inmate would make such a request under the “it doesn’t hurt to ask” theory. However, the vast majority of these petitions are ultimately denied as meritless. What may appropriately be considered an “emergency” is a constant source of debate between lawyers and judges alike. Having just recently conducted a hearing on a “Motion for Emergency Return of Watermelon Seeds,” I can personally attest that “emergency” is clearly a subjective term. However, the mere designation of a petition as an “extraordinary writ” demands extraordinary attention from judges on an expedited basis.

On May 7, Brick City Blues Festival presented Dust My Broom, A History of the Blues, at the Reilly Arts Center. The new Chevrolets will replace standard-issue vehicles, which had a combined use of 17 years within the fire department. “Equipped with heavy-duty cooling systems, hoses comprised of a special silicone component and enhanced exterior lighting systems to improve emergency vehicle visibility while driving toward or stationed on a scene, the new BC vehicles are not only visually appealing but efficient work tools to help improve performance,” stated Assistant Chief Anthony Ortiz.

Helping Hands provides shelter and related assistance for people in need, mostly women and children. A Good Buy College of Central Florida students will not pay a penny more for their tuition this school year. The CF District Board of Trustees recently voted to keep tuition rates flat for all degree and certificate programs for the 2016-2017 academic year. This is the fifth consecutive year tuition has remained unchanged. The City of Ocala has accepted the donation of the outdoor sculpture “Crest of the Wave” for permanent display at Tuscawilla Park. The donation of the public art piece was graciously provided by the David and Lisa Midgett Foundation. “Crest of the Wave” was created by sculptor Corrina Sephora of Atlanta, Georgia, and received the 2016-2017 People’s Choice Award in the Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition. “Crest of the Wave” is the sixth sculpture purchased from the Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition’s exhibit to remain in the community for public display. The Ocala Outdoor Sculpture Competition is executed in partnership with the Appleton Museum of Art, City of Ocala, Fine Arts for Ocala and the Marion Cultural Alliance.

Sleeping In Could Save Lives
A recent study found that teens who don’t get the proper amount of sleep on school nights are more likely to engage in unsafe activities, like texting and driving.

The study analyzed more than 50,000 high school students from 2009 through 2013. Turns out that teens who get less than eight hours of sleep are more likely to abuse cigarettes and alcohol and experience depression. The study also showed that almost 70 percent of teens were not getting enough sleep. Doctors around the country have become more concerned about the impact that a lack of sleep has on teens—as well as parents. Although we can’t control when our teens decide to go to sleep, we can encourage them to practice good sleeping habits, such as setting a regular bed and wake-up time or limiting the use of electronic devices in the bedroom after a certain time.

The Cornerstone School taught English to international students through robotics and engineering. › By Cealia Athanason
A
t The Cornerstone School, 14 French students between the ages of 11 and 17 sit in a classroom building small, solid-fuel rockets. Daniel Peterson, one of the camp directors and the middle school science teacher at The Cornerstone School, circulates the room to offer assistance. The school’s International Technology Camp is underway, with a rocket launch scheduled for later that July morning. Joe Moseley, the school’s STEM coordinator, started planning this twoweek camp about two and a half years ago. He used to live in France and work for NACEL, a French company that organizes opportunities for students to learn languages through immersive experiences. This Cornerstone camp is one of the newest NACEL programs. “The whole purpose is to teach the English language through a program, and that program happens to be technology,” Moseley says. “STEM education is important to us at Cornerstone.” The students worked with CAD software, VEX robotics, windmill and wind turbine engineering, and they completed projects like building a mousetrap-type car, putting together rockets and competing in a cardboard boat challenge. And these weren’t toy-sized cardboard boats—they were large enough for students to sit in and paddle across a pool, if they could make it that far without sinking.
It wasn’t all work, though. The students had their share of fun with two overnight excursions and a day of canoeing and swimming at Alexander Springs. They saw both parks at Universal Studios and spent two days in Daytona, where they swam at the beach and visited the Marine Science Center. They also saw the Kennedy Space Center and watched a minor league baseball game. “They even let one of our kids throw out the first ball,” says Moseley. Yann Aguettaz, 14, does programming in France and enjoyed the camp’s robotics activities. But his favorite part had nothing to do with STEM. “Universal Studios was cool,” he says with a smile. Sara Jean, a graduate student one year away from earning her master’s in applied foreign languages, was the students’ French chaperone with NACEL. The 22 year old speaks English very well, along with German, Italian and, of course, French. One of her jobs was to check in with the students to make sure they were comfortable with their host families. She also helped translate for the students and camp directors. “It’s been great. For some of [the students], it’s their first time in the United States,” she says. Melchior Arnal, 17, loves chemistry, speaks English well and wants to be an engineer. He enjoyed camp and the time with his host family. “I got along well with them,” he says, adding that attending the camp “allowed me to work on my pronunciation.” Cornerstone offers several other STEM programs, too, including coding programs and robotics competitions. The school is certified for exchange students, and Moseley says the International Technology Camp is already on NACEL’s brochure for next year.

It was formed this past June for kids ages 8 to 18, and plans are underway for it to run year-round. When kids sign up for the Junior Golf Academy, they’re able to golf at the Palmer Legends Golf Course after 4pm Monday through Friday and after 1pm Saturdays and Sundays. Additional lessons are offered to these kids to help them improve golf scores and attract college scholarship opportunities. Right now, the fee to join is $125, but David says he’s hoping, where assistance is required, to be able to provide scholarships by November. Junior golfers can join at anytime. Come summer, they can also participate in one or more of the Junior Golf Foundation’s six weeks of summer camps. This past summer marked the 10th year of these summer camps. Each week is a different camp, and kids ages 8 and older can sign up a few days before the camp of their choice. “We do so much for the kids that no one realizes,” David says. It’s not just about playing golf either. David says these kids get 360 degrees of support for golf and life. And that sounds like a hole in one to us.

FINDING MY INNER
STRENGTH To know my story, we would have to rewind a little to understand how it all began. Most of my life, I was healthy due to being an athlete and being very active. Then, I went to college and decided to focus on academics instead of sports.
Unfortunately, nothing else changed at that time, other than my activity level went to ZERO. Then, I got married, and life completely changed. I had way more responsibilities and less time for interests and old hobbies, especially taking care of myself and living a healthy lifestyle. Fast forward to 15 years later...I don’t even recognize the person looking back at me in the mirror. I am double the person I was when I graduated. I had become tired, significantly less mobile, and overall, just unhappy with my life. Deep down, I was really unhappy with myself for allowing it to get to this point. One day, something clicked. I was tired of feeling horrible and unhealthy, so I told my husband I needed to change and join a gym. He was supportive and I talked to Nicole Bloom outside of the Y. She was super encouraging and knew at this point in my life I was just embarrassed to enter the gym alone. It was so intimidating and I was so out of shape that I felt that everyone would stop and stare as soon as I entered the door. She met me at the front and greeted me. She encouraged me to join one of her classes, which I did and fell in love with it! My next step in my personal journey was to get set up with a trainer. The Y is awesome because so many people truly care about you and about helping you make better choices. Now, I workout with Brenden Ramsey, my trainer, twice a week. I’m so grateful that I connected with him! Even though I still have a long journey ahead, he has helped me make such a difference. He has taught me more than I ever knew when I played sports. He pushes me to do more than I ever thought I could do. By knowing my background in sports and my personality, he is awesome at knowing what I’m capable of—even when I don’t. He’s an awesome motivator and has helped me with making healthy choices in all areas of life. He is always willing to help and go the extra mile to make sure I’m successful in this journey! Honestly, I love the Y! If someone told me four months ago that I would have said that, I would’ve thought you were crazy. But it’s true. I dove in head first and bought into the healthy lifestyle that I’m still learning about every day. I feel when I’ve reached my goal with the help of the Y, I will be healthier and more knowledgeable than I was when I was an athlete. hip and Joanna Gaines would approve of one farmhouse in Northwest Ocala. Ocala’s very own fixer uppers came from up north and built this home so they could be near their grandchildren. They had a clear-cut vision of what they wanted, even had books full of historical farmhouses to emulate. “They studied a lot,” says the home’s builder, Geoff Abbott of Mega Construction. “They relied on us to fill in some of the blanks.” The over 4,000-square-foot, two-story home sits back from the driveway behind a barrier of oak and pine trees. The painted metal roof fits the bill, and small touches, like barn lights and a colorful bench on the front porch, also add to the farmhouse vibe. The square footage inside the home was put to its best use, maintaining a spacious, yet practical, feel. The owners worked with John Koontz on the home’s design. SEP ’16 ›

“[The owners] and their tastes are that great combination of elegantly sophisticated yet very unpretentious, and I feel that the home we designed together really reflects that,” John says. Beyond the gray front door, a foyer introduces a cheerful color palette of linen white paint on the walls and a patterned throw rug across the woodenfloor entry. The base of the stairwell appears at the back of the room, and a custom chair rail lines the bottom half of the walls and continues into the living room. “Everything we do is custom,” Geoff says. “No two houses are the same.” Natural light pours through the many windows of the living room, and it’s one of the owners’ favorite and most frequented rooms. The natural-colored couch sits in front of a wall of built-ins and faces a working fireplace. In the adjacent dining room, there’s a wooden table with a view of their property through two sliding glass doors. A rustic chandelier tops the table, and an antique china cabinet backs it. In the kitchen, custom cabinets line the walls, and the soapstone countertops add a unique touch. It’s these elements that really make the home stand out. “Shed-style porches provide great spaces for outdoor living and protect from east, west and intense southern sun,” John says. “Crisp white board and batten siding and silver agrarian-style metal roofs accentuate the green hills of the pastoral setting.”

They stayed true to the farmhouse style — consistent and practical throughout. The same travertine pavers that form the front walkway are also used on the back wrap-around porch and for the pool area. The wide, reclaimed and engineered hardwood
flooring stretches throughout most of the home, leaving the laundry room and bathrooms tiled. “We added trim details and ideas on how to accomplish the look they wanted,” Geoff says. “All of the materials were purchased here locally.” The tile and stone are from Bowen Tile, custom cabinetry from Dixie Workshop Inc., plumbing and appliances from Ferguson and wood flooring from Penn Flooring. Basically everything that wasn’t furniture or decor was purchased here in Ocala, and much of the furniture came from Koontz Furniture and Design, Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. From start to finish the home was complete within one year. “It was a cooperative effort,” Geoff says. “We’ve been blessed to work with some great people.” The owners couldn’t agree more. SEP ’16 ›

Overcome Athletes Who
Special Olympics opens doors and removes barriers for a talented group of Marion County athletes. By Cynthia McFarland

If
you think of Special Olympics as an event, you’re only half right. Yes, there are Special Olympics events held across the country and around the world, at which athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities compete, but it goes much further than that. Worldwide, Special Olympics Inc. is the largest provider of fitness training, education, athletic competition, social activities and leadership skill development opportunities for both children and adults with disabilities. The organization evolved from the pioneering efforts of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. In 1961, the sister of President John F. Kennedy founded Camp Shriver, a summer day camp at her Maryland farm for young people with intellectual disabilities. Just six years later, Shriver organized the inaugural International Special Olympics Games, which took place at Chicago’s Soldier Field. With more than 94,000 Special Olympics competitions held around the globe, the program has served over 4.5 million athletes participating in over 30 different individual and team sports. Athletes come from all different economic, social and religious demographics, and there is never a charge to participating athletes or their families.

Here in the Sunshine State, Special Olympics Florida was founded in 1972. An accredited program of Special Olympics Inc., it serves over 31,000 athletes. “We have about 700 registered athletes just in Marion County, from age 8 on up; in this county, our oldest participant is 70 years old,” says Maria Roman, county director for Special Olympics Florida—Marion County, which marks its 45th anniversary in 2017. Maria was a volunteer for 15 years before becoming county director. In 2000, she gave birth to a child with Down syndrome. “Little did I know, this was training me to be more accepting when my own child was born,” she says.

Learning By Doing
“Special Olympics has helped her become very outgoing,” says Elaine Richter, whose 37-year-old daughter, Rebecca, has participated in Special Olympics since she was just 8. “She’s learned to speak in front of a group and has made some very good friends. It’s also helped her physically with coordination and motor skills.” Rebecca started with Special Olympics when the family lived in New Jersey and quickly got involved with the Marion County program shortly after they moved to Ocala six years ago. She now participates in bowling, equestrian and swimming programs. “I’m very good at bowling,” says Rebecca, who started the sport at age 13 and is proud of her top score of 188. Rebecca also loves the equestrian program; she rides Western, competing in equitation and trail classes. She has competed in over two dozen horse shows. She rides with Stirrups and Strides Therapeutic Riding Program, where her favorite horse is Tex, a “medicine hat” Paint with unusual markings and blue eyes. Tex is gentle and affectionate with Rebecca, who enjoys grooming him after their rides. In addition to training and competing, Rebecca is a spokesperson for Special Olympics’ Athlete Leadership Programs (ALP), through which athletes receive training and hold leadership positions. ALPs, as they’re referred to, may serve alongside other volunteers, speak at events, even coach and volunteer in local programs. Rebecca has appeared at fundraising events to help raise awareness for the ALP. Elaine appreciates the dynamic support families can access through Special Olympics. “Parents can exchange information and ideas. It’s been very helpful to our family through the years. It’s an awesome program, and, hopefully, we’ll keep growing,” she adds.

“We have added nine sports programs over the last five years because we’re trying to diversify,” Maria explains. “For many years, we only had five sports, but we’ve grown to 14 programs now and hope to add even more.” Because of the various sports programs, county games are held throughout the year, but the largest takes place in March. In addition to hosting the state equestrian games, Special Olympics Florida—Marion County also hosts some area games, which draw athletes from Alachua and Hamilton Counties. “We have dedicated and compassionate volunteers,” says Maria, noting that there are over 300 volunteers from Marion County. “We have a lot of volunteers at the county games, but our biggest challenge is finding coaches.” All Marion County coaches are volunteers. With a total of 14 sports programs, but only nine coaches, some coach multiple sports. Shelby Wilson, who has been a coach at CrossFit Iron Legion in Ocala for three years, began volunteering as a Special Olympics coach last year. Shelby is one of five coaches from the local gym who volunteer with the Special Olympics powerlifting program in Marion County. “The strongest (no pun intended!) program we have in Marion County is powerlifiting because of this group of dedicated coaches,” notes Maria. “They go beyond the training required from the program by giving more time to the athletes, teaching them not just the sport but how to be healthy and fit.” “This gives us a chance to work with exceptional children. In our powerlifting program, all the participants are in their teens; it’s mostly boys, but there are a few girls,” says Shelby. Because the participants don’t have a background in powerlifting, they’re learning the fundamentals. They won’t increase the amount of weight they’re using until they’ve gone through the fundamentals and have correct technique. “The (athletes) in the Special Olympics program have more passion than most; they look up to you and want to learn. It’s inspiring,” adds Shelby. “Sometimes it’s hard to find time to work on my own skills, but working with these athletes pushes me to be a better coach and role model for them.”

It can be frustrating to a parent of a disabled child trying to find a way for their child to participate in sports. That’s where Special Olympics can make all the difference. Just ask Dorina Parsons of Ocala, whose son, Markland Small, now 13, has been participating since he was 8. She felt like a world of opportunity opened for her son when someone told her about Special Olympics Florida— Marion County. He’s now participated in the state games twice. Markland, who attends Hill Crest School and will be in eighth grade this year, first started with Special Olympics when he was a student at Maplewood Elementary. Because Markland is wheelchair bound and unable to walk on his own, he uses a special walker that helps him stand up. He’s assisted by his mother and one of his three sisters, who walk with him. “There are a lot of sports that kids without disabilities or with minimal disabilities can participate in,” says Dorina. “With Special Olympics, Markland can participate with kids who have similar disabilities or limited skills just as he has, and that’s really helped him.” Markland practices regularly at home with his family. This includes throwing the tennis ball and spending time in his walker and on a special tricycle to build up his strength. When preparing to compete, Markland practices weekly with the other athletes in his programs. “It’s like everybody’s a team. Each parent participates and helps out as we can,” says Dorina. “I learn from the other parents. Some of their children are a lot older than Markland, so I learn what they went through. Each child has a different disability; you can relate to some of the things they went through and it helps.”

He’s the first athlete from Marion County to become certified as a Special Olympics coach for volleyball. “I like seeing all the athletes participating in the different sports. It makes me happy,” says Tim. “It makes you feel better to help other people.” As coach, Tim and his athletes practice about five hours each week. In addition to practicing their sport, they also do exercises to increase and maintain strength. Tim’s wife, sister, nephew and several cousins are all Special Olympics athletes, as well. His son, Tim Curry, Jr., 13, is also a participating unified partner athlete both for basketball and volleyball. He’s been a unified partner since March 2016. Maria Roman explains that Special Olympics has been promoting Project Unify, in which athletes who do not have special needs participate and become part of the team as partners with a special needs athlete. Maria is grateful for the generosity and support received by Special Olympic Florida—Marion County. “We have a lot of help from the community, including Don Nottingham (former NFL Player and part of the Miami Dolphins Super Bowl-winning team), the Masons, Shriners and Knights of Columbus, who not only help us financially but also volunteer for our events,” says Maria. “With over 700 athletes in Marion County, budget is always an issue, but we’ve managed to stay within our budget so we can sustain our growing program.”

Q&A WITH CHAD TAYLOR, DIRECTOR OF THE SHINING’S LIVE SHADOWCAST HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DIRECTING AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO THEATER? My first acting role was as the major general in The Pirates of Penzance when I was 11, as part of the Civic Theatre’s Arts For All program. I started writing plays in high school and had a chance to direct the first play I had written at CF. From there, I started directing shows in Orlando and spent about six years in Los Angeles writing, directing, acting and producing.
to do JAWS as a shadowcast. After, the audience loved it so much we decided to do Jurassic Park because it was the most requested by the audience. Matthew Wardell asked if I would consider doing The Shining to complete the series for this year. It took me a few days of thinking it over because it’s not really a movie that you would think would transition well to a shadowcast, but the more I thought about it, the more of a challenge I saw it as, so I decided to take it head on.
HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED A ROLE IN A PLAY YOU DIRECTED? There are only one or two roles that I’ve written that I’ve claimed as mine simply because they’re personal for me. In 2010, I wrote a full-length play called Barfly on the Wall that we performed at Insomniac, and one of the characters was based on myself, so even though I was directing it, I wanted to play it. What’s funny is during the audition process an actor named Xak Brittain came in out of nowhere and portrayed the role even better than I thought I could, so I ended up doing half the shows and he did the other half.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN DIRECTING A SHADOWCAST PLAY RATHER THAN A TRADITIONAL PLAY? I think it depends on the movie. Partially, I think it’s the fact that you aren’t allowed to take your time to set the scene in a shadowcast as compared to a traditional play. JAWS is an absolutely brilliant movie, but I was cursing Spielberg’s name by the end of it because his pacing is insanely quick. You’re one place and then you’re instantly in another with no time to change sets, costumes, props or anything else. Your cast has to constantly be on their toes, and they can’t miss a single cue.
AS THE FIRST THEATER COMPANY IN THE WORLD TO ATTEMPT A LIVE SHADOWCAST OF THE SHINING, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON SUCH A CHALLENGE? The Shadowcast Series started as a bit of a joke at Insomniac when we were producing the Rocky Horror Picture Show shadowcast regularly and got to talking about what movies could be turned into shadowcasts—but probably shouldn’t. The top of that list was JAWS. When the Reilly Arts Center was gracious enough to give us a home, they asked what kinds of ideas we had, and I mentioned trying
WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STAR AND AN ACTOR? My definition of a star is probably different than most. People usually equate being a star to being famous, but I’ve always seen the star of a show as the person who is the bedrock of it. There are always one or two actors, sometimes in the background, who the story would fall apart without. They’re sometimes the quiet ones. Any actor can be a star if they work hard enough.

PIANO MAN IN THE MAKING Q&A WITH ETHAN BORTNICK, PIANIST WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING THE PIANO? I started playing piano at 3 years old. I saw kids taking lessons in my school, and I was curious, so I asked my parents for piano lessons. They said “no” because they thought I was too young. When I got home I took a small toy keyboard and began mimicking everything I heard on television and radio. When my parents heard me copying music, they agreed to give me piano lessons. WHICH MUSICIANS OR SONGS INSPIRE YOU? It is impossible to pick just one musician, just one song or just one type of music. I love to listen to all types of music and perform all types of music. Each time I hear something, I find something special in each song or piece. CAN YOU SHARE A FAVORITE MEMORY FROM A PERFORMANCE? I have done hundreds of concerts. Each one is memorable, and there have been special moments in each. I do remember one concert that I performed in South Africa, and we had a chance to give a couple hundred tickets to orphans. One of those orphans asked me how she could live her dreams and perform, so I asked her to come on stage and had the audience film her dancing. After that performance, we found out that a big executive was in the audience, and he sponsored dance lessons, clothing, food and other things for this girl. She is now dancing! That is what music can do. It can change people’s lives and inspire them. This is why I am honored, humbled and excited about what I do!

Q&A WITH JESSI MILLER CASTRO, MAX PAINT OUT PARTICIPANT CAN YOU DESCRIBE A FAVORITE PIECE YOU HAVE DONE? My favorite piece, which changes from time to time with my focus and mood, would be “Poe,” a portrait of Edgar Allan Poe. It is one of a series of three that I did a few years ago. I love Poe’s work. The mystery and artistry surrounding it are always fascinating, and this portrait has a lot of elements about him and his work. There is a raven in his hair, the “telltale heart” on his chest is actually a cut-through showing the background, words from his poem, ‘The Raven,’ are scratched into layers of paint on his suit.” WHAT’S INTEGRAL TO THE WORK OF AN ARTIST? No artists are the same—styles, techniques, subject matter all vary so greatly. What I think makes art good is the feeling that the artist has imbued in their work and how it comes across to the audience. The more inspired the artist is, the more inspired the viewer is. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO DURING THIS YEAR’S MAX PAINT OUT? I’m looking forward to coming up with a totally different concept on what to paint at this year’s Paint Out. Last year, I painted a section of train tracks where two of them crossed. I don’t know what I’ll paint yet this year. That’s part of the fun of being in the moment and painting live—walking around until I see something that I want to focus on and bring to life in an artistic way.

Can’t get to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Hogwarts isn’t real (we’re sad about it, too), and maybe Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter is too long a drive, but any venue can host a wizarding wedding with these special touches.
• When sending out your invitations, browse online stores like Etsy for Hogwarts acceptance letter-style invites or envelopes. Save the dates would look pretty cute as tickets on the Hogwarts Express, too. • Two points for Gryffindor! Along with numbering your tables, assign them each a house. You can even coordinate their centerpieces and other décor based on house colors if you’d like. Perhaps a sorting hat belongs near the seating chart?
• For favors, set out jars of candy for guests to throw in to-go bags. Of course, they should be labeled with their proper HP-themed names, like candy floss and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans. • Remember those dining hall scenes with the floating candlesticks? You’ll want to load up your tables with candles tall and short. You can even make some of them float—place several tea lights in small glass globes and string them up. While candles may take up the bulk of your centerpiece space, don’t forget some special touches like glass potion bottles and jars or some special artifacts from the books on different tables. If I were you, I’d reconsider drinking that steaming hot cup of tea. Studies show that it could increase your risk of developing cancer.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, hot beverages are now classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” If the beverage is above 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit), it could cause someone to develop cancer of the esophagus. Not to mention the potential burns to the mouth and esophagus. Curt DellaValle, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, says, “The presence of a toxic chemical in our bodies does not necessarily mean it will cause harm, but this report details the astounding number of carcinogens we are exposed to in almost every part of life that are building up in our systems.” While a burn here and there is unavoidable, try to avoid too-hot toddies just as you would these other carcinogenic chemicals. Instead of immediately drinking that boiling cup of coffee, let it sit for a bit. You could be putting yourself less at risk.

SMOKE POINT: Refers to the temperature at which an oil starts to burn and smoke. The higher an oil’s smoke point, the more cooking methods you can use it for. It’s important not to cook with an oil that has exceeded its smoke point, as beneficial nutrients are destroyed when oil is overheated—not to mention you’ll end up with bitter, burnt food and a stinky kitchen. VEGETABLE OIL: Refers to any plant-based oil, including soybean, sunflower, canola and safflower oil. Sometimes, generic vegetable oils are made with a mixture of many oils. Each vegetable oil has its own smoke point, so do your research before dinnertime.
Smoke point: 400°F WHEN TO USE IT: Made from the seeds of the canola plant, canola oil is low in saturated fat and pretty cheap to buy. It’s a great all-purpose oil for cooking and dressings, but with its neutral taste, it’s not a great choice when flavor is what you’re looking for.

Smoke point: 392°F WHEN TO USE IT: Grapeseed oil is a by-product of wine-making. Use it for salad dressings, sautéing and baking. It has a medium-high smoke point, so keep it out of your deep fryer. Grapeseed oil has a neutral flavor and is a very versatile oil that can be used in many kitchen situations.
CORN OIL
Smoke point: 450˚F WHEN TO USE IT: Refined corn oil is often used in deep-frying and when making margarine. It has a neutral flavor and is used frequently in commercial kitchens to make french fries. Corn oil is high in saturated fats, so if you’re looking for a healthy oil, consider a different option.
Storage Solutions
Smoke point: 320˚F WHEN TO USE IT: Once the olives are pressed and the oil is extracted, you’re left with extra virgin olive oil. Its robust flavor makes it ideal for salad dressings, vinaigrettes and bread dips. Its low smoke point means it is not ideal for cooking when using high heat, such as with frying and deep-frying.
COCONUT OIL
Smoke point: 350˚F WHEN TO USE IT: With a similar-to-butter consistency, coconut oil is great for vegan cooks. It’s naturally sweet, so it’s perfect for baking, making frostings and sautéing certain dishes. It has a low smoke point, so don’t use it for deep-frying, and its sweet taste makes it a not-so-great option for dressings.
Oils should be kept tightly sealed in a cool, dark place. If the bottle is clear, wrapping it in tin foil can help extend its shelf life.

More Than A Sports Bar

cala’s Tilted Kilt promises a good time and great service but also quality food to match. Sit down to an authentic shepherd’s pie, a plate of fish and chips or a helping of Scotch eggs for the taste of fresh, homemade food in an Irish pub atmosphere. “Our fish and chips are a good staple, and on Wednesdays, we have all-you-can-eat wings,” says Tilted Kilt’s General Manager Nefty Montfort. Of course, there are still burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads, but the Tilted Kilt adds its own Irish twist. Try the Wicked Boston Big Arse Burger loaded with maple pepper bacon and Samuel Adams Boston Lager caramelized onion relish or the Mediterranean Salmon topped with roasted peppers, onions, green olives and mustard cream sauce. Montfort suggests trying one of the wraps since they’re a fan favorite. Heat things up with the Spicy Southwest Chicken
Wrap, or pick your own wing sauce for the Chicken Tender Wrap. “Most of what we have is made from scratch,” says Montfort. “Our fish come in fresh, our steaks are hand-cut and our chicken is marinated in-house.” There’s also a sampler platter just for those who want to try more than one dish. And, for something new and tasty, try the Tilted Kilt’s own buffalo chicken or barbecue pork served over macaroni and cheese. Grab dinner and test your knowledge on Trivia Night every Monday from 7 to 9pm, and don’t miss the Tilted Kilt’s annual breast cancer awareness fundraiser coming up in October. Bike Night is on the first Saturday of every month from 6 to 10pm, and the Tilted Kilt hosts car shows on the third Saturday of every month from 5 to 9pm. “The last bike night is in November, and that’s the biggest one,” says Montfort. Fun with The Federal
T
he Federal is a mobile pizza truck, rolling up to any event with catering staff and a chef to dole out artisanal pizza and beverages to all. Layla Ruffino, part owner of Blue Highway Pizzeria, says The Federal was their way of expanding their catering services while adding some personality. It harkens back to her parents’ original food truck adventure, called Famous Frank’s, which was their way of breaking out of the corporate world before moving to Florida and opening Blue Highway. Today, The Federal brings a whimsical touch to catered events and means Blue Highway’s offerings aren’t bound to their brick-and-mortar locations. It’s a unique touch for parties, corporate events, fundraisers, weddings and more. (They even bring their own music.) But where did they find a restored 1951 Federal flatbed, exactly?
We found a gentleman in Charleston who refurbishes old vehicles for his catering business, and he had a couple of these he built for himself. He happened to have this one that he wanted to sell. › Layla Ruffino
“We knew we wanted a truck. We knew we wanted this particular oven; it’s an Italian brick oven. We were considering making a new one and looking at different companies, and through that research, we found a gentleman in Charleston who refurbishes old vehicles for his catering business, and he had a couple of these he built for himself,” says Ruffino. “He happened to have this one perfect for our needs and in our colors that he wanted to sell.” The Federal has been with the Ruffinos since November, and they’ve been event hopping since. Neapolitan-style pizza is wood fired in the truck’s Valoriani pizza oven, just like at the restaurant. Catering menus can be customized to include salads, appetizers and pastas, as well. “We generally have four items we offer: a barbecue chicken pizza,

a funghi pizza, a margherita pizza and a carne,” says Chef Adam Scott. “I would personally recommend our funghi pizza—it’s one of the best sellers we have.” So how much will The Federal cost you? Surprisingly little. Catering packages begin at just $15 per person. They’re happy to customize menu selections for each event, including beer choices, so customers can have more interesting ales on tap. “We really try to promote our local Florida breweries,” Ruffino explains. “We have a relationship with Swamp Head and First Magnitude, but as long as my beer distributor carries the beer my guests want, I can get whatever.” Of course, The Federal does come with its own set of challenges, like spontaneous Florida rainstorms trying to blow away the tent (true story). And with restored vehicles, repairs are also a given. Thankfully, The Federal has found a reliable mechanic in its new hometown. For those who may see The Federal out and about this fall but have never tried Blue Highway’s pizzas, Ruffino has a few suggestions. “It’s not for everybody, but my favorite is margherita with anchovies,” she laughs. “One of our most popular pizzas on the truck would be the funghi, a beautiful white pizza with an assortment of mushrooms that cooks really nicely in the truck. The flavor combination of the smoke and the crispy crust and the mushrooms makes it really delicious.”

5 Tricks For A ChoreFree Weekend

With the right routine, however, day-to-day tasks can be tackled throughout the week, paving the way to a chorefree weekend, which means more time for the fun stuff. “I am a firm believer that the weekend is meant for relaxation,” says Becky Rapinchuk, cleaning expert from Clean Mama and author of The Organically Clean Home. “My secret to a chore-free weekend? Tackle the most hated space to clean—the bathroom—on Monday so you’re not dreading the chore all week long. To start, grab a dish wand and load it up with your favorite tile cleaner to scrub the shower grout. Once you’re done, clear the countertop, wipe down the sink, and give the toilet a deep cleaning. Spritz a light scent on towels or the shower curtain to leave the space smelling fresh on your way out.
Dishes not coming out clean from the dishwasher? Run the water in your kitchen sink until it’s hot and then start the dishwasher. This will pump hot water throughout the washer’s cycle, as opposed to starting off cold and then turning warm. The hot water not only does a better job of cleaning your dishes, but it is also critical in killing any germs living on glassware and flatware.
Multi-purpose tools are key when looking to save time. If it remains, add a drop of dish soap and blot it back into the stain, but don’t rub. Rinse with cool water and continue to blot as the sponge absorbs the solution while not pilling or ruining the fabric. After a few minutes, the carpet should be dry and the stain should be gone.

Miles for Medals The inaugural season of the Big Hammock Race Series brought out some the area’s most seasoned runners and introduced newbies to the sport of road racing. A Parent’s Paradise
Back in January, a few moms got the idea to host an expo that would help introduce moms and moms-to-be to all of the wonderful, yet unknown, services available to them in Ocala. Hence, the Bump, Baby and Beyond expo was born. What was planned to be a small event for local moms virtually grew by the hour to the point where parents with kids in tow were lined up and waiting to get in the doors in the hopes of meeting new professionals, watching important demonstrations and learning about the latest and greatest in childrearing. The success of Bump, Baby and Beyond led event organizers to schedule a second expo this month. Even founder Jessica Gilbert took some time from her busy schedule to tell us a little about what’s in store for the second installment of this popular parent event.
Bourbon and Beyond The very best bourbons sit and age eight to 10 years in oak barrels before they are deemed ready to be tasted. That’s a long time to wait for such a small sip. Fortunately, the organizers of the 2016 Bourbon Invitational have managed to secure some of the rarest of bourbons around and invite guests to sample these hard-to-find varieties. Each course of an exquisitely prepared four-course meal will be paired with a different bourbon, and attendees will have the opportunity to purchase their favorites of the evening all while supporting the Marion County Literacy Council. onsidering Six Gun Territory closed 30 years ago, the kids who were cowboys back then are getting up in years. Most are Social Security age or darn close; it’s not likely any will tumble from a roof in shoot-out re-creations during the Six Gun Wild West Weekend this month at the Kirby Family Farm in Williston. Not that any are about to hang up their holsters yet, either. “As long as we’re on this side of the grass, we’ll keep on,” vowed Terry Spencer, a back-up Digger and shooter from 1964-67. But time goes on, and someday, someone will need to step in. They’re already in the wings, awaiting their chance to take on the plumb “good guy” roles. Meet the Youngslingers—a term the new guys prefer over “the new guys.” They’re the next generation preparing to carry on as long as Six Gun 2.0 remains in demand. And it doesn’t look to be going away soon. With Little Six Gun being built on the Kirby Farm, the “Originals” want to be sure there are live actors to bring the city to life. The same is being done with a new generation of can-can dancers called the L’il Darlins’. SEP

“I grew up with Six Gun,” said Mike Conners, son-in-law of Six Gun marshal Charles Pennington. “I graduated just before Six Gun closed.” As family, he jumped at the chance to don dad-in-law’s boots. “I’ve always loved the Wild West. The gunfight at the O.K. Corral happened on my birthday. To revisit that, to show my kids what their grandfather did is a dream come true.” Tim Birdsey, 43, moved here in 1980 as a kid from Fort Lauderdale and hoped someday to shoot for Six Gun. “Every city boy wants to be a cowboy,” he said. “There are new generations coming up that have never seen this kind of stuff,” added Jared Guinn, at 32 the youngest of the “class.” Six Gun school came about after Wild West Weekend organizer and one-time gunfighter Jim Pierce wrenched his leg last year and spent the weekend on the sidelines. The idea is to have new guys ready to take over roles in gunfight scenarios. They get to practice as “bad guys,” Pierce said. There’s no structured curriculum, just learn the scripts and be ready to step in. That’s pretty much how Six Gun shooters learned their schtick. “They gave me a new Colt 45 and told me to report to the gunfighters,” Pierce said. “They told me ‘when he shoots you, you die.’” But it’s all in fun. “We want kids to know we’re not really dead,” he added. Youngslingers also need to assemble their fighting duds. “Jeans, white shirt, vest, hat... what more do you need?” asked Guinn, seated next to Barry Pierce decked out in the same attire. “The key,” Pierce said, “is that they want to do their very best every time they step into that street.”

2nd Annual Friends Of Furry Faces
The Humane Society of Marion County (HSMC) recently hosted the 2nd Annual Friends of Furry Faces Wine and Animal Art Auction at the Adena Springs Golf & Country Club. › Written And Photographed By Ronald W. Wetherington

he evening began with guests viewing all the auction items while enjoying hors d’oeuvres. They were drinking Chateau La Paws Cabernet and Chardonnay wine. This wine is made in California by a company that puts a picture of a different shelter dog on each label and donates some of the proceeds from sales to no-kill shelters. For the wine auction, fine wines were donated from some of the best wine cellars in North Central Florida and by several wine merchants for sale at this event. Featured were three bottles of wine signed by John Travolta and Kelly Preston that raised a considerable amount of funds. The auctioneer for the wine auction was renowned sommelier Tom Tylee, whose extensive knowledge of fine wines enhanced the auction. Bidding was lively. In addition to a wine auction, there was an animal-themed art auction. The painting by Robert Stebleton, Furry Friends, Why Not, featured an English bulldog surrounded by three kittens. Mr. Stebleton donated six original paintings for the animal art auction portion of the event. Stebleton and his wife live year-round in Ocala having moved from Maine several years ago. He uses a pallette of warm
David Lilly and Elizabeth Nixon tropical colors creating a vibrant abstract. Additionally, Guy Harvey donated a signed and numbered print, and local artist John Fort donated two large oil paintings titled Eternal and Instinct. The auction included modern art of an Irish setter by artist Sharon Crute, formerly of Ocala. Ms. Crute adopted her cat, Dave, from HSMC. Over 100 tickets were sold for this charity event and gourmet dinner. Guests dined on delicious cuisine in a luxurious setting with views of ponds and waterfalls. Over the past two years, the Friends of Furry Faces event has raised almost $100,000. Planning for the 3rd Annual Friends of Furry Faces is already in progress for 2017. Bruce Anderson, a local owner of thoroughbred horses and chairman of the second annual event, said, “It’s only fitting that the leading animal charity in Marion be at the forefront of creative fundraising as it is designing new and efficient programs for our homeless animals in the community. Plus, our pool of 1,700 volunteers makes the HSMC the charity with the least administrative costs so that 86 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the care of our furry faces. Friends of Furry Faces has become the prominent fundraiser for animal welfare because Bruce Fishalow, Dallas Roberts and Tom Ingram it’s not another fund-raising event, it is a fund-raising party!” Bruce Anderson has been a member of the Humane Society of Marion County Board of Directors for many years and is a strong supporter of animal welfare. Formed in 1964, the HSMC has since been dedicated to matching families with homeless pets and educating the community about responsible pet ownership. HSMC is a private, nonprofit organization and a no-kill shelter. The HSMC mission is to prevent cruelty, suffering Ed Cluster, Julie Atkinson, Roseann Ben and Danielle Marciano Morton and Bruce Fishalow and over-population of animals. The HSMC shelter is located at 701 NW 14th Road in Ocala. It has a capacity for up to 300 dogs and cats. The HSMC Thrift Store, located at 110 NW 10th Street, supports the HSMC mission and provides funds by the sale of donated items.
