new year brings new opportunities, new successes and new reasons to celebrate and be thankful. As the new year begins, I’d like to take this opportunity to look back on what was accomplished in 2015 and what we’re planning for 2016. This past year, we held several successful charity events, raising money for local organizations and causes; helped Marion County’s homeless children and families with the “Stuff the Bus” program and more; and donated $6,000 to local teachers to help support student projects in need of funding. This year, we hope to continue the success of our charity events and community outreach projects. Save these dates! Our Global International Committee will host a “Taste of the World” event on February 9 at 5:30pm. This event will
feature a social hour with presentations and entertainment from various cultures, food tasting from around the world, music and more. On April 30, OMCAR will once again join the Chamber & Economic Partnership and the Marion County Building Industry Association to bring to you the 2016 Home, Garden & Lifestyle Expo at the College of Central Florida’s Ewers Center from 10am-3pm. In the event of an emergency, there often isn’t much time to search for or stock up on supplies. You can create your own disaster preparedness kit ahead of time with some basic household items.
WEATHER RADIO A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio broadcasts continuous weather information from the nearest national weather service and keeps you updated on potential weather-related issues that could arise.
NONPERISHABLE FOOD When disaster strikes, access to fresh, perishable foods and refrigeration may be limited, so it’s important to have nonperishable food items readily available. Such items include ready-to-eat canned foods, granola or fruit bars high in protein, dried fruit or vegetables, nuts and low sodium crackers. If you choose to include canned items in your kit, also remember to have a manual can opener handy.
FIRST AID SUPPLIES Basic first aid supplies should be accounted for, including adhesive bandages, compression bandages, tape, gauze, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes and rubber gloves. Pain relievers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, are also good to have on hand.
FLASHLIGHT AND BATTERIES Power outages are a common result of natural disasters, and stumbling through darkness can be dangerous. Be prepared with a flashlight and usable batteries. Check your battery supply frequently.
