OPEN HOUSE May 5, 2018 Come celebrate the opening of a new season with a fun-filled event chock-full of activities and food. Bring your friends and family to the Newport Sea Base and discover the exciting opportunities available to girls and boys on the waterfront. COASTAL CLEANUP DAY September 15, 2018 This Coastal Clean up effort is held annually on a Saturday in September. In 2017, Orange County Scouts and Sea Scouts joined over 7,400 volunteers and removed more than 70,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from Orange County beaches, parks and creeks. CHRISTMAS PARADE VIEWING December 19-23, 2018 Gather friends and family and join us for an incredible view of the 109th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade! Year-round, girls and boys learn oceanography, marine biology, environmental science, boating safety, dinghy and keelboat sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, motor boating, and other aquatic-related subjects. The site is provided courtesy of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America. A shining example of what a privately-funded and publicly-accessible facility can do, the Newport Sea Base counts an overall attendance of more than 53,000 per year.

SUMMER CAMP SQUIDS | 1 Week

Excitement and learning await at Squids Camp! The full-day program features Huck Finn Fishing, Harbor 20 sailing, wacky science, arts and craft projects, a visit to the Back Bay Science Center touch tanks, building and racing a mini-sailboat and Sea Base Olympics! Loads of fun at the waterfront with no swimming expertise required. Scouts - The full-day program will complete Tiger’s Floats & Boats and Wolf’s Spirit of the Water. JUNIOR AQUATICS CAMP | 1 Week Junior Aquatics Camp is the place for fun science, challenging activities on the water, team competitions and prizes! Activities feature water bottle rockets, boat tours to ExplorOcean and the Back Bay Science Center touch tanks and a visit by the Harbor Patrol fire boat. This full-day program is designed to fulfill four Webelos electives (Aquanaut, Art Explosion, Engineer & Adventures in Science), Bear’s Salmon Run elective and Wolf’s Spirit of the Water elective. Sign up for both the AM & PM sessions for the full experience. Campers must pass swim check on first day. PADDLE SPORTS AQUATICS CAMP | 1 Week

Paddle Sports Aquatics Camp calls you to a week of fun on-the-water challenges! This full-day program features canoeing, kayaking, introduction to rowing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), SUPsquatch, surfing, team competitions, relay races, scavenger hunts and prizes. Registered Boy Scouts can earn the Canoeing and Kayaking merit badges. Be sure to enroll in the AM and PM sessions to do all the activities. You will identify wind direction, rig your boat, sail upwind and down, capsize, tack and jibe. Mastery of Level 1 skills is required to progress to Sailing 2. Swim check or proof of swimming ability required. BIG BOAT SAILING - CRUISING | 2 Consecutive Weeks

In this ADVANCED sailing class, you will use your seamanship skills on our fleet of 30-38’ keel boats. You will learn to navigate using a nautical chart, utilize roller furlers and lazy jacks, anchor for an afternoon swim, and master the physics that allow winches to handle lines under heavy load. You will hone these skills both inside Newport Harbor and along the coast between Dana Point and Long Beach. Most importantly, you will learn to travel safely and have a great time on the sea! PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 2 or equivalent. Swim check or proof of swimming ability required. Ages: 11 - 17 | Fee: $349 | Weeks: 1-2, 5-6 | Time: 1:15 - 5 p.m.

SAILING 2 | 2 Consecutive Weeks In this INTERMEDIATE class, you will refine your boat handling skills in increased wind conditions while improving communication and sportsmanship. Mastery of Level 2 skills is required to progress to Big Boat Sailing. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 1 or equivalent. Be prepared for a swimming proficiency test on the first day of camp. BIG BOAT SAILING - PERFORMANCE | 2 Consecutive Weeks

Sailors will learn to optimize the speed possible in 30-38’ racing boats. As they fly spinnakers, adjust leads on sails for optimal trim, use winches, and fine tune the sails, they work to get top speed from an Olsen 30, a Colombia 30 Sport, and an IMX 38. Sailors will hone their skills in Newport Harbor and along the coast between Dana Point and Seal Beach. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 2 or equivalent. Swim check or proof of swimming ability required. Ages: 11 - 17 | Time: 1:15 - 5 p.m. | Fee: $349 | Weeks: 3-4, 7-8

BIG BOAT SAILING - JUNIOR | 2 Consecutive Weeks

In this ADVANCED sailing class, you apply your skills as a mariner on a Harbor 20 keel boat. You learn to dock a heavy boat, navigate our harbor, anchor for a snack in the turning basin, and maybe even sail backwards! You will explore every nook and cranny of Newport Harbor and maybe visit the sea lions at the bell buoy! PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Sailing 2 or equivalent. Be prepared for a swimming proficiency test on the first day of camp. Ages: 7 - 10 | Time: 8:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. | Fee: $285 Weeks: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

BAY FISHING | 1 Week Earn the Fishing Merit Badge as you experience fishing in Newport Harbor from a Newport Sea Base boat. Learn which equipment to use for which fish and how to best rig your tackle. We provide the boat, the tackle, the bait and the expertise. (Our experienced staff knows where kids catch fish!) NOTE: Anglers age 16 and up must carry a valid California Fishing License (Purchase online or at tackle shops; not available at Newport Sea Base). MOTOR BOATING | 1 Week Drive a variety of motor boats while learning the boater’s “rules of the road.” Practice safely fueling your boat, driving in a straight line, making right-angle turns and U-turns, anchoring, docking and more! CITIZENSHIP CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION | 1 Week Discover how national decisions affect you, your family and the community. Learn about the history and functions of the federal government. Find out how to become an active participant in the life of the nation and how to voice your opinion to your representatives. Recommended for youth age 13 and above. CITIZENSHIP IN THE WORLD | 1 Week Compare the duties, rights and obligations of citizens in the United States to those of citizens in other countries. Learn what types of governments exist, how international law differs from national law and why countries must cooperate to thrive economically. Study world events in relation to security, health, values, geography, natural resources and climate. Recommended for youth age 13 and above. Learn to draft plans by hand and use a Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) program. This class introduces you to engineering graphics skills, schematics, design tools and professional opportunities.

Have fun learning how and when to perform first aid and CPR, as well as how to keep yourself and others safe.

FISH & WILDLIFE | 1 Week Construct a bird feeder and record the activity at it. Do a scavenger hunt while on a field trip to the Muth Interpretive Center and find 25 species of wildlife. Learn safety principles, emergency management, and appropriate preparation for yourself and your home. What you learn in this class will better prepare you and your family to overcome the challenges of emergency situations. PREREQUISITE: Bring proof that you have earned the First Aid Merit Badge. Note: May be taken concurrently with First Aid.

Study the ocean’s environment and its creatures. Dissect a shark. Participate in a plankton tow to study the food chain in Newport Harbor, and visit Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve.

Photograph sights around the Bay as you travel by pontoon boat. Use your best shots to create a photo journalistic story that you can either mount on poster board or use to create a slide show. Practice enhancing your photos with Photoshop or similar software.

Travel by boat to the Back Bay Science Center to explore the habitats of Upper Newport Bay. Study the natural environment. Conduct experiments to see how living things respond to changes in their environment and learn how human activity affects habitats.

Practice using hand and power tools as you build four projects including a boat. Learn about the various types of wood and the type to use for each project. PREREQUISITE: Completion of Req. 1C - Bring in Totin’ Chip Card.

ROBOT BUILDERS CATAPULTS vs. STRUCTURES | JUNE 25-29

BATTLE MACHINES | JULY 23-27

Join us as we build structures and catapults and then destroy your opponent’s structures with your catapults! We will be learning about different catapult designs and strong structures as students partake in different challenges each day. Concepts taught include levers, strong joints, energy and more. Challenge your skills against our Brain Builders Box Cannon! Students will also have a chance to earn a medal during the final day tournament.

Engineer mechanical racers, battle machines, and battle tops and go head-to-head in an all out battle. Learn basic electronics by using motors, switches, remotes, and gears (such as spur and worm gears) to make your machines move and drive your opponent off of our battle track. Prizes will be given out on the final day and medals awarded to the top battle machine!

XTREME VEHICLES | AUGUST 6-10

Become the master builder as you incorporate motors and gears in your project and make it come to life. Students will face multiple challenges each day such as a tug-o-war vehicle challenge to a game of LEGO hungry-hungry hippos! Concepts taught include gear ratios, friction, levers, and basic electronics. Students will also have a chance to earn a medal during the final day tournament!

We are building xtreme vehicles in this class! Using motors, gears, remote controls, and our giant tires, engineer a vehicle capable of climbing a steep slope, compete in our xtremely slow car challenge, and drag race. Students will learn concepts such as gear ratios, basic electronics, friction, air pressure and more. Prizes and awards are given on the last day as well as a chance to earn medals during our in-class competition.

ADVENTURE SAILING CLUB | AGES 7-18

Three Sea Scout Ships operate from the Newport Sea Base: the co-ed Ships 90 and 1767 and the all-male Ship 711. All three meet on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Come visit a meeting and see what it’s all about!

This groups meets on Sunday afternoons for the joy of sailing, camaraderie, and improving one’s skills. Family activities are also held from time to time, and the students may sail larger boats as well!

MARINE SCIENCE CLUB | AGES 10-18 NSB JR. SAILING TEAM | AGES 8-18 For students having completed Sailing Level 2, or equivalent, this program is for the competitive sport of sailboat racing! The team practices twice a week and competes in regattas in the Southern California area on weekends. For more information, contact tom@newportseabase.org.

NSB OFFSHORE SAILING TEAM | AGES 14-20 For students having completed Big Boat Sailing, or equivalent. We take the passion for sailing to the next level in 30’ to 38’ race boats for nearshore and offshore races and regattas. The team meets on Thursday evenings twice a month, and competes on weekends. For students who become enthralled with studying what lies, swims, or crawls, beneath the surface of the ocean, we have a program to continue this passion! Our dedicated staff of Marine Biologist Teaching Assistants and volunteers lead sessions that range from exciting class lessons, to hands-on learning, and monthly field trips! SHARK CAMP Be amazed as a marine biologist shares with you the myths and truths about sharks. Campers receive a certificate of participation and an event patch. ROWING NEWPORT SEA BASE ROWING | AGES 13-18 For youth looking for a unique sports program, rowing, or crew, this will provide amazing fitness, camaraderie, travel and leadership opportunities. NSB Rowing currently has 90 athletes, sent two boats to the Jr. National Championships in 2016, and provides all its athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level. SUMMER PROGRAM PLANNING Use the grids below to plan out your child’s SUMMER AT SEA BASE. Days are divided into four time blocks, with a short break between each of the morning and afternoon classes and a supervised lunch period.
