OxyEngage offers incoming freshmen an opportunity to experience a piece of Los Angeles before official move-in day. As a hub for music, film, and outdoor activities, students have multiple options to choose from and can likely find an activity to suit their interests: Social Justice and the City, California Coasts, Icons of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Music & Film, Los Angeles Underground, Wildnerness LA, and camping in Ventura/Santa Barbara.

Orientation

Orientation this year gave new students a primer for what life at Oxy would be like and advised them on how to navigate their college experiences. Through campus tours, various info sessions and social mixers ranging from OxyPalooza (a dance put on by KOXY) to Interfaith services and “Tiger Target Trips, Orientation introduced new students to life at Oxy. Orientation also gave frosh a chance to discuss important issues like sex, diversity, and drugs with their O-Teams, bouncing ideas off one another and preparing to engage with a new social climate.

The William and Elizabeth Kahane United Nations Program is one of the most unique opportunities in the country for undergraduates. Each year, up to sixteen students spend the fall semester, when the General Assembly is in session, interning with a mission or agency within the UN while taking pertinent courses. From meeting with world leaders (i.e. the president of Rwanda) to delivering statements on behalf of their respective country, Oxy at the UN students are a great example of the learning Oxy students have the opportunity to do outside of the classroom.

Since we live in such a hot and dry desert, a place both mentally and physically stressing and demanding, once in awhile we crawl parched-lipped and desperate across the shifting sands towards whatever wet wonderlands we can. The “OASIS: Quench Your Thirst dance organized the most intimate student encounter of the year thus far. Sipping the sweet nectar of their youth, students showed up in a range of mental states and satiated their need for a little something sweet and mindless amidst the dryness that inundates the rest of their college experience.

Homecoming Instead of always having to come home to see our parents, some of ours travel the opposite direction and visit us during Homecoming. The delight of greeting friends’ parents put us in our best-mannered behavior as we shook hands. The campus staff worked hard to make Oxy as presentable as possible. Tours were offered highlighting the Campus’s most intriguing features. Then, as the end of the week drew near and the Tiger sports teams fought for their school’s pride, some of the parent-cultivated politeness slipped away as we cheered our peers on from the bleachers. This Fall Fest in the Greek Bowl was one for the ages, with an opening act from Code Green, a Providence, RI rap group with familial ties to Oxy. They were followed up by a groovin’ main show from Kehlani, a college-aged R&B artist out of Oakland. Only the second female performer in recent memory, Kehlani lit up the crowd with her hip shaking and positive messages about faith, body image, and the importance of selflove. Oxy’s own James Coholan rounded up the night with a half-hour on the turntables.

Occidental’s thespians were as hard at work as ever this Fall, putting on a pair of plays--one contemporary and one older--exploring themes of community, meaning, and human nature. Culley guest artist Larry Biederman directed Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a recent play written by Sarah Ruhl about the difficulties of communication and connection in the digital age. A woman meets someone who appears very still whom she comes to realize is actually dead. After seeing his cell phone ring, she decides to connect with the tumultuous family he left behind, finding herself wrapped up in a complex social drama in the wake of his departure.

The other Culley guest artist directing at Keck Theater was Juliette Carrillo, who chose to direct Three Sisters, a 1901 play by Anton Chekhov meditating on questions of fulfillment, duty, and happiness in ways that were strikingly relevant to contemporary contexts as well. Set in an old house, the play presents a bourgeois family’s musings on their positions in their community--whether they should work, whom to marry, what to make of the banal conditions of their existence. Themes of excess, sexism, and the emptiness of philosophy emerge as the play unfolds. The actors’ performances were what enlivened the piece, earning a standing ovation on Saturday night.

Ilana Share, Greece Each year, a considerable portion of the Junior class disappears from Oxy’s campus for a semester. Although they might not be able to see their friends or take part in their favorite clubs or sports, the sacrifice tends to be well worth it because their time is spent experiencing a different place, culture, and learning environment. Studying abroad is a big part of Oxy--over two thirds of the student body spends time in foreign countries studying, researching, and enriching their experiences through encounters with our globalized world. From the rich biological encounters of the Galápagos Islands to the intricacies of South Africa’s music scene, from the environmental and economic complexities of a metropolis like Singapore to the rich filmic history of Buenos Aires, the scope of what our world has to offer coaxes students out of the Oxy Bubble to explore something new each year.

Nguhi Muturi The ladies of the Vagina Monologues graced Thorne Hall once again with pieces ranging in theme from gendered violence to invigorating sexuality, from issues of queerness to the experience of getting periods. Selling over six-hundred tickets this year, it was one of the most popular performances in Oxy memory. The impressive turnout could be partially credited to a fantastic week of consciousness-raising--donut and dildo sales, an arsenal of pussy-empowering T-shirts, and even a vagina suit were featured in the leading-up to the big night. With all proceeds going to Peace Over Violence, the performance was successful not only in moving an audience to laughter and tears, but also in making a stride towards shaping a more open, peaceful, and loving world.

Keck Theater came alive for the New Play Festival this year. Over a span of three nights, five original student-written plays were read by a combination of Oxy theater students and professional actors/directors. Billy Schmidt’s Bombs Away got the festival started, detonating waves of laughter through his satirical exploration of American anxiety about terrorism and anarchy. Maricela Guardado’s This is How the Pacheco Brothers Make Their Mama’s Chicken Soup mixed sharp wit and emotional lyricism in an exploration of family politics in the wake of loss. The Festival’s range in tone and content made it worth watching as many plays as possible.

La Encina

<3 Emma <3

For over 100 years, the hardworking staff at La Encina has been documenting and printing small pieces of Occidental’s recorded history and providing a valuable resource for students past and present. Despite its small, 13-person staff, the yearbook covers nearly every group, team, and face that steps on campus. Whether making sales, taking pictures, or writing this very copy, the completely student-led team goes the extra mile to create a book whose significance will live on for generations of future Tigers. It is worth adding that, in our completely subjective opinion, this year’s book could be one of Occidental’s finest ever.

Senate

Oxy’s Senate is made up of one President and 13 Senators. The Senate allows the strong voices of Oxy’s diverse student body to be heard, and the governing body is also the first stop for funding initiatives on campus. This year and last, much of the Senate’s agenda has been concerned with the passing of a new constitution and the approval of a new Diversity and Equity Branch of the ASOC, which has recently come into fruition.

42

Honor Board

Made up of 10 students elected by their peers, Oxy’s Honor Board was designed to represent the student body perspective on the college’s constitution. The Honor Board deals with three types of cases: Judicial, Academic, and Honor. Moreover, the Honor Board is responsible for approving the ASOC budget and reviewing any student body fee increases. Most notably, the Honor Board clashed with the ASOC senate last year over the proposed student-body increase for DEB and whether the increase was constitutional.

Ian Hutchcroft, Jonathan Kanellakos, Kara Alam, Flora Adamian, Earl Park, Will Huang, Robbie George, Wooyoung Lim

DEB

The Diversity and Equity Board (DEB) is described by Oxy’s website as, “an official student-led branch of ASOC focused on empowerment and improved conditions for structurally marginalized groups”. Its members oversee funding for cultural and diversity-themed clubs and organizations, push difficult discussions around diversity and marginalization to the forefront through funding talks, lectures, and events, and work hard to improve the Oxy experience for all its students. Abhilasha Bhola, Gabby Rosenada Valdes, Tim Lewis, Nina Monet Reynoso, Rai Haynes-Venerable, LJ Valenzuela

Sustainability Fund

In an effort to make Occidental a more sustainable, earth-friendly campus, the Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fund invests in initiatives presented by their fellow students. This branch of ASOC is one of the newest, but has proven a valuable resource for both students and the college as a whole. Motivated students have the opportunity to take on their own projects that improve both the campus and the world, little by little.

Some of ASOC’s funding supports student-run organizations that make life as a student at Oxy a little richer. The Oxy Weekly delivers the scoop on campus-related and larger issues, the Bengal Bus carries people to their favorite off-campus spots free of charge, the Oxy Design Service provides artistic rendering for club posters, KOXY takes care of student-run radio programming as well as putting on a series of local concerts, and the Bike Share lets students get from class to class in a quarter of the time they normally would.

Occidental’s construction team was hard at work this year updating the campus architecture. In addition to updating the Braun bathrooms, they did some serious work on the AGC, redoing the Registrar’s Office and remaking the Career Development Center into the Hameetman Career Center. Students also puzzled over the swath of taped-off ground by the Cooler for a few weeks before realizing the grass was being replaced by a sleek, curving garden area. Thanks to the workers, we have a slightly more beautiful campus this year.

The Occidental Library appears to have lost a lot of its books. In the 3rd-Floor Quiet Section, rows of stacks have vanished, replaced by clusters of desks. Although its physical book collection may have been condensed, the reaches of its online database continues to expand. In addition, the ongoing Special Collections harbors fascinating literary artifacts from exhibits on Oxy alumni like nature poet Robinson Jeffers and social activist Ernesto Galarza. They also showcase the work of more recent students in the form of the Letterpress Printing class’ exhibit, and the beautiful Cosman Shell Collection in the Main Floor hall.

Most departments at Oxy offer students opportunities to delve into their specific interests through independent research. Students interested in international research can pursue a Richter opportunity to fund their exploration. Economics majors produce content from capitalist corruption to the impact of physical education on financial success. English majors can either review literature with a focus on something like Marxis feminism or pursue an Argonaut summer research program in creative writing. Science majors work either in labs or reviewing scientific literature. The possibilities are varied and plentiful.

CTSJ: Journal of Undergraduate Research

OXY UNITED Occidental College boasts a mission to educate a “gifted and diverse group of students;” but when those diverse students demand the education they were promised, they are met with an unresponsive administration and bureaucratic abuse. The administration’s consistent neglect of Black students and their demands has fostered a painfully tense campus climate, representing feelings of pain and betrayal from Black and non-black students alike. Hence, this piece was written from the office of the Vice President of Finance of Occidental College. I am one of the 400 students who occupied this space from Monday November 16th at 12:30 pm to Friday November 20th at 8:00 pm, and we will continue to fight until our demands have been met. We started this occupation in solidarity with students at Mizzou, Yale, Ithaca, Claremont, and other predominantly white institutions (PWIs) across the nation. We, black students and students of color, have experienced discrimination and mistreatment by administration since our admission. As students, we are willing to let our academic performances suffer in order to ensure our survival. This is why creating safe spaces and protecting marginalized students should be the responsibility of the administration. Failure is not an option. We, Oxy United for Black Liberation, delivered a list of 14 demands to the president last week following a national day of action protest on Thursday November 12th. First on the list of the demands is the immediate removal of President Jonathan Veitch from his position. Since becoming president in 2009, Veitch has only disappointed students. Veitch has been given over 49 demands from three different groups of students; only 3 of those demands have been met. His continued evasion of students’ needs has created a culture of irresponsibility. The administration responds to our frustrations with empty conversations that lead to no action. Our distress is met with silence, and we are forced to constantly advocate for ourselves.

FOR

BLACK LIBERATION Veitch does not appear to care about students of color, especially Black students, at Occidental because he does not have to care. As a white, cis, affluent, heterosexual man, he has the privilege to ignore the violence we face everyday. The board of trustees continues to increase his salary every year because they only care about what’s in their pockets. Veitch brings in money to the college by tokenizing the same students who are imploring the board to acknowledge their suffering. It is impossible for us to exist here. We suffocate in this space. I will stay in the administrative building and take their space. We will make them uncomfortable for as long as we have to. I don’t want to have to sacrifice a semester’s worth of hard work, but I don’t have a choice. We are tired of being led by an incompetent president who literally turns his back on students who are trying to explain why they are suffering at this institution. No one is listening to us. Our experiences and our pain — our daily oppression — do not matter to the administration. People of color are identified as problems to manage instead of students to provide for. Warmly,

Wylie has the enviable quality of being air-conditioned and incredibly convenient as it is just a short walk from the library. With some of its dorm-room windows opening directly to the path below, it’s a prime location to hail friends from above and gloat about air-conditioning while they pass by on their sunny, sweaty way. Upper-division hall Bell Young is right next door to three other halls, Pauley, Berkus and Wylie, making social life a walk in the park for residents. Newcomb Hall

Newcomb hosts primarily first-years, but every year a select number of sophomores, juniors, and seniors live here as well. The hall is one of the most modern and new spaces on campus, equipped with air-conditioning and conveniently located on the north end of lower campus just above Booth Hall. Located within the hall is the Newcomb Media Suite, home of The Occidental Weekly and this very La Encina Yearbook.

Norris, a themed living community, is hard to summarize, as there are so many different dynamics coexisting under one common name. These suite-style residences are arguably the most unique on campus, and perennially one of the most socially active.

Pauley Hall

Pauley is Occidental’s multicultural hall. People with varying cultural backgrounds have it as not only a living space, but a place to discuss, share, and acknowledge one another’s experiences. It’s also home to the MLK Lounge, an important space for hanging out, doing homework, or tackling challenges and questions regarding identity in a complexly-cultured campus (and world).

Stearns Hall

Nestled between Keck Theater and lower campus, Stearns is an upper-division residence hall complete with multiple outside patios and a nice central courtyard to hang out in. The Mitchell Garden is right across the parking lot from it, providing yet another spot in which to hang out and enjoy Oxy’s flora.

Stewie Hall Stewart-Cleland Hall, otherwise known as “Stewie”, is a first-year residence hall on upper campus. Its theme this year is “Stewie Ski Lodge”, a counterpart to “Braun Mountain” nearby. Despite its spacious lounge area complete with pool tables and a TV, its main claim to fame is “Stewie Beach”, which is in fact not a beach but a grassy lawn. Whenever the weather’s nice one is sure to find plenty of people there soaking up the sun and fresh air, tossing a frisbee, or strumming a guitar.

Themed Living

Some Oxy students choose to live together in like-minded communities in order to foster discussion and action on issues they care about, be it the Food Justice House, who attempt to live and eat ethically, the Queer House, creating an open space for non-normative gender expression, or Berkus House’s women-centric experience.

Off Campus

Many seniors and a small group of juniors call somewhere off campus home. The majority live within a mile of campus but others have moved into other neighborhoods of Los Angeles, from downtown to Pasadena. Off-campus housing makes up a sizable portion of the Occidental nightlife, and a few houses tend to serve year-toyear as party venues.

The Tigers’ Softball team had a few hard hitters this year. Mackensie Priley and Mariah Montgomery started the season off with the strongest offense on the team. But they weren’t alone in their drive—in the opening game against Lewis & Clark, Alex Battest hit four for four with two RBI’s and two doubles. In that same game, the Tigers were losing until they rallied behind a flurry of hits from Morgan Guisti, Cora Roberts, Alexis Funaki, and Bailey Stevens, coming home with the win at the end of the game. Other notable performances included first year Madison Romero hitting big with bases loaded against Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) to win the game. Overall, the team shared hard hits fairly evenly this season and picked up momentum as they cheered one another on and built off one another’s successes.

The Women’s Tennis team, on the other hand, was able to pull off some big wins this season despite a tough schedule. Led by senior Keilani Bonis-Ericksen and sophomore Samantha Farrell, the squad claimed an away victory over conference rival Whittier Poets, steadily handled a tough NAIA opponent in Biola University, and put up strong fights against Midwestern opponents Oberlin College and Hardin-Simmons University. While the Tigers will miss Bonis-Ericksen’s leadership next year, the future looks bright for the Tiger as 11 of this year’s team will be returning to play next year.
