#theoryintopractice A distinctive education. An Oxy education encourages students to explore ideas and venture outside of their comfort zones. As one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the United States, our location in the global city of Los Angeles gives all students the opportunity to put theory into practice and ideas into action. With more than 40 majors and minors, innovative interdisciplinary programs and an emphasis on research, Oxy cultivates in students the intellectual, social and practical skills to contribute meaningfully to an ever-changing world.

Whether bringing a prominent speaker to campus, interning at the Mayor’s Office, conducting research off the coast of the Pacific Ocean or visiting a local music venue for a show, there are so many ways that students can tap into the city’s wide array of resources. #campus A residential campus community. Occidental is tucked between the diverse, eclectic neighborhoods of Eagle Rock and Highland Park. Our 120-acre campus is studded with oak and eucalyptus trees. Oxy’s graceful arches and halls might also look familiar, as they can be seen within numerous movies and television shows. #global Globally engaged. An Oxy education prepares students to live as global citizens — with the opportunity to cross boundaries and borders and a strong ethical compass to guide them. Two-thirds of our students pursue international opportunities during their time at the College. Through a traditional study abroad program, a semester spent at the United Nations or the study of a foreign language on campus, Oxy offers many resources for students to connect their learning to the wider world.
#research Idea exploration. Undergraduate research is a hallmark of an Oxy education. Oxy students take research-rich courses that give them hands-on experience in the lab, library, community and field. From studying human behavior to exploring Costa Rica’s insect ecosystem, there are many opportunities to participate in research regardless of your area of study. Working directly with faculty mentors, students develop intellectual independence and become creators of knowledge, often through collaborations with classmates and communities around the world.
#community Curious, committed and socially conscious. Oxy students are empowered to participate and embrace new opportunities. They aren’t afraid to advocate for change. Cultural clubs celebrate the diversity of our students, while the College’s Diversity and Equity Board (DEB) supports student and faculty led initiatives that foster a campus climate of inclusivity. Propelled by an entrepreneurial spirit and a genuine interest in the world around them, our students relish the chance to channel their inner leader. Whether you want to start a new club, volunteer for a cause, work on campus or act in a play — or perhaps a mix of all these — there is something here for you.
#athletics Your best game. At Oxy, your liberal arts education transcends the classroom. We believe that health, wellness and athletic competition are integral parts of the Oxy experience. Nearly half of our students participate in 20 competitive varsity teams, several club teams and an active intramural program. With access to a modern fitness center, a new aquatics center and newly renovated tennis courts, and a climate that allows for year-round outdoor activity, there are countless ways for students to stay fit and active.
#support Culture of care. Occidental’s Culture of Care philosophy means the individual needs of students are our primary focus. This College-wide support network identifies and assists students as they work through the challenges of college life. From individual academic coaching to spaces like the Intercultural Community Center, which sparks dialogue and facilitates programming, at Oxy maximizing the potential of all our students is paramount.
#lifeafteroxy Experience shaping tomorrow’s leaders. An Oxy education prepares students to problem-solve, think critically and creatively, and communicate effectively. Through Oxy’s key partnerships with organizations throughout Los Angeles, students gain hands-on experience that compliments their academics. Oxy’s Hameetman Career Center provides support for students by offering advising in career services, along with national and international fellowships. From working for Fortune 500 firms and startups to preparing for medical school or traveling abroad on a fellowship, Oxy graduates are thriving across a wide range of jobs and industries.
