Welcome to Oceana’s 17th Annual SeaChange Summer Party!
We are thrilled you are joining us tonight to celebrate the oceans and support Oceana’s campaigns to restore ocean health and abundance. Together, our SeaChange family has raised nearly $20 million to protect California’s waters and the oceans around the world. Thank you!
We are pleased to welcome back the host for this evening’s program: award-winning actor and Oceana Board Member Ted Danson. He will help us celebrate tonight’s honoree – former Oceana Board Member, Chair Emerita, and SeaChange CoFounder, Valarie Van Cleave. We will also hear from Oceana’s new CEO Jim Simon about the organization’s success in tackling the biggest threats facing our oceans around the world. And we will conclude the evening with a wonderful performance by Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb.
When you head home from tonight’s event, we hope this one thing sticks with you: Oceana delivers results. In just the last year, we have achieved more than 25 victories that protect and restore the world’s oceans.
Here in California, we made great strides to protect whales from entanglements in the state’s commercial crab fishery. Oceana, along with our partner Earthjustice, also won a legal battle to require the federal government to rebuild the overfished Pacific sardine population.
We helped create new marine protected areas in Mexico, Chile, Canada, and Spain. We secured new laws in Delaware and Florida to curb plastic pollution. And this summer, we achieved a major victory when Amazon announced it replaced 95% of its plastic air pillows with 100% recycled paper filler in delivery packaging in North America. Following campaigning by Oceana, the company said this will avoid nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.
This is a HUGE win for our environment!
In Europe, Oceana and our allies successfully campaigned for a new law that requires all European Union fishing vessels, including 49,000 small-scale vessels, to install and use tracking systems by 2030 at the latest. And in Belize, Oceana and our allies made history when a new law passed requiring any decision to open its ocean to oil and gas drilling to first be voted on by the Belizean people through a national referendum.
We’re excited to celebrate these and many more victories with you tonight. And we aren’t slowing down! With your partnership, Oceana will continue to make major progress for the oceans because a healthy ocean is every child’s rightful inheritance.
For the oceans,
Elizabeth Wahler

SPECIAL GUESTS
Honoring — Valarie Van Cleave
Valarie Van Cleave is the CoFounder and Chair Emerita of the SeaChange Summer Party. She is a member and the immediate past Chair of the Oceana Board of Directors. Valarie has an abiding affinity for the earth’s most remote places. This lifelong attraction has informed her world perspective and keeps Valarie forever curious about our planet, both above and below sea level. She is most at home in wild places, with a love of scuba diving,
Master of Ceremonies — Ted Danson
To most, Ted Danson is known for TV and movie acting roles, but for those in the conservation movement, he is much more famous for his work as a passionate ocean advocate and Oceana spokesman.
The son of an archaeologist and anthropologist, Ted grew up understanding that cultures leave an imprint on the Earth and that some legacies are indelible, for better or for worse.
Despite growing up in landlocked Flagstaff, Arizona, Ted grew an affinity for the water through years of routine pilgrimages to visit family in California. His call to action came years later, during his tenure as Sam Malone on “Cheers,” when living in Santa Monica he saw a sign at the beach reading, “Water polluted, no swimming.” “Trying to explain that to my
hiking, wildlife photography, and history. Van Cleave has witnessed firsthand the often-shocking, adverse environmental impacts of humanity. These global experiences led Valarie to seek out an effective international organization that is making transformational improvements in mankind’s relationship with the natural world. Valarie’s 17 years of working with Oceana and co-founding SeaChange is the result of that search.
kid was hard,” he remembers, “It got me questioning a lot of things.”
Shortly thereafter, Ted met environmental lawyer Bob Sulnick and become involved in a movement to prevent digging for oil wells in Santa Monica. Buoyed up by the victory, Danson accelerated his involvement by helping create the American Oceans Campaign in 1987, which eventually became Oceana in 2001.
In the last two decades, Ted has been complemented by his staunch ocean advocacy, appearing in public service announcements, appealing to donors and testifying to the government on the condition of our oceans. He currently sits on Oceana’s Board of Directors where he and his wife, actress Mary Steenburgen, continue to fight on our oceans’ behalf.
Musical Guest — Lisa Loeb
Dallas native Lisa Loeb is a GRAMMY™ Award-winning singer songwriter, touring musician and philanthropist who started her career with the platinum-selling hit song "Stay (I Missed You)" from the film Reality Bites. A trailblazing independent artist, Lisa was the first pop musician to have a Number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. She followed that remarkable feat with several hit singles and six albums, two of which were certified gold.
Lisa recently released her 15th album, A Simple Trick to Happiness, to stellar reviews from critics and fans, and followed the release of this album with the debut of her new musical, Together Apart, which she co-wrote and co-produced with over 100 of her
fellow Brown University alums to raise money for The Actors Fund. The musical received attention from prestigious outlets like The New York Times, Vanity Fair, People, and Playbill.
Other recent highlights and appearances include a collaboration with Ziggy Marley on the song and video for "Music Is In Everything," as well as her cover of Bright Eyes' "First Day of my Life," which was exclusively premiered through Rolling Stone magazine, and "Love Never Dies," an original song she wrote and recorded as a theme song to accompany acclaimed author James Patterson's latest novel, "Sophia, Princess Among Beasts."
Lisa is also well known to parents and kids for her five children's albums and two illustrated children's books with music.
She collaborated to develop and write the children's musical "Camp Kappawanna" which debuted at New York City's Atlantic Theater Company. Inspired by her own love of summer camp, in 2008, Lisa started The Camp Lisa Foundation, which sends underserved kids to summer camp. In 2015, The American Camp Association of New England named Lisa Loeb as their Camp Champions Honoree with a gala celebration at Fenway Park.
Over the last three years, Lisa has also released three children's albums that are exclusively available with Amazon. Her family friendly album, "Feel What U Feel," won the Grammy for Best Children's Album, along with rave reviews and The Parents Choice Award. Among other shows, Lisa provides voice talent for the animated series "Creative Galaxy" and
composes the original songs for the Emmy nominated, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" series. Her songs from the series make up a soundtrack album that was released in June of 2018 exclusively with Amazon.
Often recognized for her iconic cateyed glasses, Lisa redefines how women accessorize with her own eyewear line. As an entrepreneur, Lisa oversees the business and eyewear design of Lisa Loeb Eyewear. It's an ever-growing collection, available at optical shops as well as Costco, where women's styles and children's frames are available.
As an actor, Lisa's recent film and television appearances include Netflix's "Fuller House," GEICO's "Claims Audition," and John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight." You might have also heard her voice on commercials including Alfa Romeo, Uber Eats, CNN, and Chili's.
A recent personal honor for Lisa was being asked by editor, Will Shortz, to help celebrate the 75th anniversary of The New York Times crossword by creating an original puzzle with pro, Doug Peterson. She also released a cover version of "All the Young Dudes" for Howard Stern's David Bowie Special on Sirius XM, leading a kids' songwriting workshop in Sydney, Australia with AMP, and a two-week residency at the legendary Carlyle Hotel in New York.
When she is not at home in Los Angeles with her husband, Roey, and two children, Lyla and Emet, Lisa enjoys performing all over the world and entertaining audiences of all ages.

OCEANA’S BOARD AND STAFF
extend our deepest appreciation to the CAHILL FAMILY for their longstanding commitment to Oceana and generous support of the SeaChange Summer Party.
OCEANS OF GRATITUDE
To our wonderful volunteers who spend countless hours ensuring that the SeaChange Summer Party is a success. Volunteering is a work of heart. We couldn’t do it without you!
For more than 20 years, Oceana and its allies have campaigned to protect the waters off Southern California and beyond from their biggest threats including overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution, and the killing of threatened ocean animals like whales, sea turtles, and sharks.
Just 22 miles off the coast of Santa Barbara, the Channel Islands are home to a series of faults, banks, and underwater mountains — undersea geology unlike any other off the U.S. West Coast. This landscape, combined with a convergence of warm subtropical and cold nutrient-rich waters that upwell from the deep make this region a globally important epicenter for biodiversity supporting ocean life and habitats and have earned it the title, the “Galapagos of North America.”
Here, large whales — including endangered humpback whales migrate through while raising their young, California sea lions glide through dense kelp forests, and colorful cold-water corals create habitats for iconic species like giant seabass.
While this archipelago may appear picture-perfect, destructive fishing practices threaten this important area and the marine life that call it home.
Set gillnets, which can span the length of 20 football fields and are weighted to the seafloor, are allowed to be used in the waters surrounding the Channel Islands in an effort to target California halibut and white seabass. Unfortunately, this gear catches many other species in the process, and more than half of the animals
caught are thrown overboard. Juvenile great white sharks are one of the victims, as this is a key nursery area for the species. (For more information about the threat of set gillnets, see the Spring 2024 issue of Oceana Magazine.)
The Channel Islands and Southern California’s waters have a lot to lose if action is not taken to protect this essential biodiversity. That’s why Oceana and partner Blancpain embarked on their first of three scientific expeditions to the area earlier this year.
During the five-day expedition aboard the vessel Peace, Oceana’s team of researchers conducted visual scuba diving surveys to identify many species, including thousands of individual fish, invertebrates like crabs and lobsters, and habitat-forming corals and kelp. Researchers also tested the potential for new remotely operated vehicle technologies to map rocky reefs and locate lost fishing gear.
The team also collected water samples at 18 shallow and deep-water sites for environmental (e)DNA analysis. The samples will be analyzed in a lab for DNA sequencing, which will allow researchers to identify virtually all ocean life (all plants, animals, and fungi) inhabiting and traversing these waters. By analyzing the DNA “footprint” left behind in the water column, Oceana expects to deliver a more comprehensive view of the area’s biodiversity at a range of ocean depths.
“The images and research gathered on the expedition will support Oceana’s campaign to protect ocean biodiversity and will paint a vivid picture for policymakers of just what’s at stake to lose if we don’t get bycatch from set gillnets under control,” said expedition leader Dr. Geoff Shester.
New Victories Safeguarding California’s Ocean
U.S. government required to rebuild Pacific sardines
Following a legal challenge by Oceana and Earthjustice, a United States Federal District Court ruled that the National Marine Fisheries Service failed to meet its legal obligation to rebuild the West Coast Pacific sardine population, which has been mismanaged for more than a decade and remains well below healthy population levels. The Fisheries Service must now develop a new rebuilding plan and environmental analysis that includes science-based catch limits to prevent overfishing and recover the species. Pacific sardines are an essential food for marine mammals, Chinook salmon, and other commercially important fish. Sardine collapse can have wide ranging impacts on coastal communities and ocean ecosystems, and in California, has led to sea lions starving and reproductive failure among brown pelicans. Oceana will continue to campaign to recover the sardine population and ensure that a new, robust rebuilding plan is completed and implemented within one year.
New funding in California to prevent entanglements
The California Ocean Protection Council authorized new funding to help prevent whales and sea turtles from becoming entangled in fishing gear, following campaigning by Oceana and its allies. This includes up to $650,000 to advance innovative “ropeless fishing gear” in the state’s commercial Dungeness crab fishery. This investment helped support 20 Dungeness crab fishers who received approval to test the whale-safe gear this spring. Based on the successful test results, Oceana is pushing the state to authorize ropeless fishing gear by Spring 2025.
New measures in California crab fishery to protect whales
Following campaigning by Oceana and its allies, California first delayed the opening of the 2023-2024 commercial Dungeness crab fishery and then reduced the number of crab traps that can be deployed off the central and southern California coast by 50%. These measures were implemented to protect humpback whales from becoming entangled in commercial crab fishing gear. They came in response to excessive whale entanglements and a high number of humpback whale sightings, plus the discovery of a critically endangered Pacific leatherback sea turtle found entangled and drowned in commercial Dungeness crab gear.
