RE you ready for life at sea level? A vacation in Ocean City gives you access to some of the best sand and surf in the whole world right along the edge of New Jersey. But the best part of this island is that it's so much more. It's watching the sunset from your rooftop deck, it's taking in a Pops orchestra concert at the Music Pier, it's whooshing down a track as you look at the giant smile on your child's face. This, all of this and so much more, is life at sea level. Ocean City brings big city culture to the beach with its Community Center - a housing of music, art, and dance, books, learning, exercise, history and more. There are classes, tours, museums, boutique shops, tasty eateries, imaginative sweet shops, and all the sports and outdoor activities you could ask for. Life at sea level is flat out fabulous. Getting here is almost as easy as lying on our beaches.

ECAUSE of its close proximity to three major US cities (Philadelphia, New York, and Washington DC), Ocean City is easily accessible by car, train, plane, and bus. Getting here is as simple as plugging your favorite OC address into Google Maps and following the instructions as you drive until the salt air hits you. There are ways to enter our eight-mile island on all four sides (you can arrive on the ocean side by kayak or boat, of course!) Four bridges help visitors find their happy place - the Ocean City Longport Bridge leading to Longport and Somers Point via Wesley Avenue; The 9th Street bridge leading to and from Somers Point; the 34th Street Bridge connecting Marmora and Upper Township, and the Rush Chattin bridge leading into Strathmere.

Directions from Philadelphia Take the Atlantic City Expressway east to Exit 7S, Garden State Parkway south. Parkway Exit 30 serves 9th Street and Exit 25 serves 34th Street. Directions from Points South Take Interstate 95 north to Interstate 295 north. From 295, take Rt. 40 east to Rt. 55 south to Rt. 49 east. Turn right on Rt. 50 south. From Rt. 50 turn left on County Route 631 and follow signs to Ocean City. Bus Details New Jersey Transit serves Ocean City via the Transportation Center at 10th Street & Haven Avenue • 973-275-5555; 800-772-2287 for TTY or njtransit.com. Ferry Details The Cape May-Lewes Ferry links Cape May with the DelMarVa peninsula. From the Cape

Air Travel The closest commercial airports are Atlantic City International (ACY) in Pomona and Philadelphia International (PHL). The Ocean City Municipal Airport serves general aviation traffic at 26th Street & Bay Avenue • 609-525-9223. Street Smarts Avenues run north-to-south and streets east-to-west. West, Asbury and Central run the entire length of the island. Street numbers begin at 1st Street near the northern tip and end at 59th Street at the southern border.

HEN you are on vacay (or planning your vacay), it’s nice to know that someone or something (like this book!) is here to help you become an expert navigator of your own. There are so many wonderful things about Ocean City, NJ, from our weather (temperate) to our beaches (clean and soft). Now speaking of weather... OC’s surrounded by water (you knew that!) and thanks to that lovely big beautiful ocean our air temperature doesn’t get too hot or too cold. Hello winter getaway! If you’re planning a trip and aren’t sure what to pack, a quick glance at your fave weather app and you might be thinking you’re good to go. But it’s always a good idea to throw in a pair of shorts (if you’re planning a fall or winter trip) or a sweatshirt or light sweater in summer. Forgot to do that? Lucky for you there are plenty of fab shops waiting with options. Once you’ve arrived, let us help you get around.

A stop at one of the Ocean City Welcome Centers gets you all the info you’ll need for your stay – things to do, places to eat, shop, be merry... Roy Gillian Welcome Center - 9th Street Bridge 34th Street Welcome Center - Acme parking lot on 34th Street Music Pier Welcome Center - Moorlyn Terrace and Boardwalk City Hall Welcome Center - 9th and Asbury Being a good navigator also means knowing what’s allowed and not allowed, where to park, take your doggie, etc. It also helps you get into vacay mode much faster. Here is a cheat sheet for your vacation. Parking Meters run from May 1 to October 31 and many now take credit cards. There are parking lots dotted throughout the island as well. City-operated lots are on 5th, 8th, 9th, and 14th Streets and on Moorlyn Terrace. The further toward the bay you park, the better chance of it being 12

Bicycling A bike path runs through the center of town on Haven Avenue between 9th and 34th Streets. The Boardwalk allows bikes from 5am to Noon in the summer season and all day during the off-season. Additional shared-use bike lanes and bike-friendly roads run throughout town. Helmets are required in New Jersey for all riders under 17 and recommended for everyone. Bicyclists should ride with traffic and obey all posted signs and signals. Ocean City has many bicycle and surrey rental companies. Visit www.bikeocnj.org to learn more. Fur Babies Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach October 1 to April 30. Guide dogs are allowed on the beach at any time. In the south end of the island you’ll find the Ocean City Dog Park at 45th Street & Haven Avenue. The park is open dawn to dusk with a Paw Pass required for entry. Visit the dog park website, oceancitydogpark.org for more info. Recycling Please drop your trash in a proper receptacle. Ocean City recycles plastic, glass, aluminum and paper. These items should be separated from regular trash. Emergencies Call 911 to summon police, fire or rescue by phone. Tune your radio to 1620 AM for updates from Ocean City’s Office of Emergency Management during any public emergency, including severe weather. The beach is calling.

HETHER you live ten minutes or ten hours away, the Ocean City beach calls you like a siren song, nearly all year round... perhaps it says... come feel the sand between your toes, let the warmth of the sun relax and take you to your happy place. There are eight miles of silky sand lining the island of Ocean City. These are world class beaches, and they are calling you. Depending on where you choose to place your chair or blanket, the beach is wide or short, populated or not. But each beach brings the dancing plovers who play in the surf, the warm salt air breezes, and the relaxation. Will you answer the beach’s call?

Beach Tags Beach goers 12 and older are required to have a beach tag from June 4 through September 5. Tags are $5 for a daily pass, $10 weekly, $25 for the season (get a discount by purchasing before May 31). During the season, you can purchase tags at most beach entrances and on the beach. Pre-season tags are available: City Hall, 9th and Asbury Music Pier, Boardwalk & Moorlyn Terrace Roy Gillian Welcome Center, 9th Street Bridge Henry Knight Building, 115 East 12th Aquatic & Fitness Ctr, 1735 Simpson 34th Street Welcome Center, 34th Street. Call for hours before you visit. Comfort Stations Boardwalk restrooms are located at: 1st Street, 6th Street, Music Pier, 11th Street, and 12th Street. There are also public restrooms at City Hall, 34th Street Playground and 58th Street Beach.

All bathrooms are handicapped accessible. Family restrooms are located at 1st, 6th and 12th Streets. All restroom hours are subject to weather and crowd conditions. A privately-owned bathhouse provides showers and changing rooms at 13th Street and Ocean Avenue, 9am to 7pm daily, weather permitting. • 609-399-7121. Accessible Beaches Beach access for visitors with a lack of mobility is available at 1st, 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 14th, 26th, 29th, 34th, 36th, 40th, 43rd, 46th, 50th, 51st, 52nd, 53rd, 55th, 57th and 59th Streets. List subject to change. Check www.ocnj.us for the most up to date information. The Surf Chair program offers free beach-accessible wheelchair service Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend. Chairs are available on a daily and weekly basis. Reservations are recommended. • 609-525-9304.

Guarded Beaches The beaches are fully-guarded the last week in June to Labor Day, 10am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5:30pm weekends and holidays. There are a limited number of beaches guarded during the off-season. •Swimming is permitted only on guarded beaches when lifeguards are on duty. •Beaches marked with an asterisk (*) are guarded from the Saturday before Memorial Day to the week after Labor Day, manpower permitting. •Surfing is permitted at beaches marked with an (S). •The lifeguard schedule is subject to change.

ISITORS who come to the island for its beach are sometimes pleasantly surprised to find that Ocean City has vibrant communities from beach to bay, north to south. Each neighborhood has charm and personality, and each is waiting to be discovered by you. Perhaps you already know some of them... North End (also known as the Gardens), South End, Bay and Marina District, Downtown Asbury Avenue, and The Boardwalk. All of these locations have places for you to stay, restaurants for dining, shops for shopping, and are easily accessible by bike, car and foot. What will you discover when you explore?

North End This tip of OC is referred to as The Gardens and has lovely homes, big beaches, and, well, gardens! South End Home to the scenic beauty of Corson's Inlet State Park, bustling businesses, beautiful homes, and big beaches. Downtown Asbury Avenue The heart of Ocean City lies in this one mile stretch of Asbury Avenue. You’ll find boutiques, eateries, sweet shops, salons, a park, City Hall, and much more here. Bay and Marina District The first thing you see as you enter OC from the 9th Street Bridge, the boat lined district is where you’ll find watersports, fishing, the OC Yacht Club, and a few eateries/sweet shops. The Boardwalk This 2.5 mile stretch from St. James Place to 23rd Street is home to tons of fun, food, and fabulous shopping. It’s also perfect for exercising and people watching. 19

T’S no surprise that Ocean City is completely surrounded by water. It’s an island after all, and one that has all the amenities you can ask for. With the Atlantic on the east coast... the intracoastal waterway on the west and inlets on the north and south, OC is the perfect place to boat (or charter a boat), fish, kayak, jet ski, wave run, water ski, surf, sail and parasail. And let’s not forget swim! In summer, there’s no better escape from the heat than a quick splash into the water... Grab that giant flamingo float and head into the lagoon for a rockin respite from the everyday. Today is the day to try something new... Leave your comfort zone behind and take hold of a water ski line instead. Or take that surfing lesson you’ve been wanting to try... The water is waiting.

Sailing Lessons are offered at the Ocean City Yacht Club (members only) and through the Ocean City Sailing Foundation, ocsailingfoundation.org. Surfing Surfing is allowed on all beaches while lifeguards are off duty. Three guarded beaches are designated as surfing beaches: Waverly Boulevard, 7th Street, and 16th Street. OC is one of the most popular surfing spots on the east coast and has a rich surfing history. Local surf shops have wave reports, board rentals and lessons. Boat Launches Public access boat ramps are at Tennessee Avenue and Corson’s Inlet State Park. At Tennessee Avenue there are supplies, bait, ice, refreshments. The ramp is open April 1-September 30. Fishing From surf fishing, to bridge fishing and everything in between, OC has something for anglers of any type. On a fishing trip you could land bluefish, flounder, tautog (blackfish), kingfish, shark, striped bass (rockfish), and sea bass. There’s also tuna, mahi (dorado) blue and white marlin, wahoo, and more. To learn whats biting, and which bait you’ll need to reel 'em in, ask your local tackle shop or anyone at the dock. There is no license needed to fish the saltwater around OC, but anglers must register (for free) with NJ Saltwater Recreational Registration Program at nj.gov/dep/saltwaterregistry. At nj.gov/dep you can also find minimums, tips, and more. Licenses are required to harvest clams and other shellfish. Surf fishing is allowed in Ocean City on unguarded beaches and in Corson’s Inlet State Park.

Natural Beauty Stainton's Wildlife Refuge Located on Bay Avenue between 23rd and 30th Streets is 16 acres of protected dune and marsh - a cool escape from the bustle of the island. Beach Walks Offered in July and August, these guided beach tours are a perfect way to get acquainted with the eco system that thrives by the shore. Why does a horseshoe crab have so many legs? How do shells form? Why can't I stop asking questions? These might be a few of the questions you'll ask during the tour... Corson's Inlet State Park Imagine yourself a Lenni-Lenape, walking through the terrain as you listen to the loudening roar of the surf call you closer with each step through hilly dunes and phragmites,

until at last, you come out of the brush and are faced with your prize... The amazing Atlantic. Though we may not be trailblazers like the Native Americans, it certainly feels like you're an intrepid explorer finding your way to water when you leave your car behind and start out through the trails at the southern tip of Ocean City, in Corson's Inlet State Park. The Bayside Center Sitting in a home once owned by the Diesel family (of diesel fuel fame), the Bayside Center is an unassuming building that houses amazing stuff inside. All summer long, the BC is home to science camps that would have intrigued Marie Curie herself. Okay, perhaps we're reaching, but judging by how fast these camps fill up, the folks at the Center are doing something right. Pickleball Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. 18th & Haven Avenue • 12 outdoor courts. Memorial Day through Labor Day 7:30am to sunset. Annual pass: $50. Weekly pass: $15. Daily pass: $5. Basketball There are so many bball courts in OC, you'll be ready to take on Steph Curry in no time. In addition to pick up games, the Rec Department sponsors summer leagues for third grade and up. John Carey Masters Swim. If the weather isn't cooperating, there is another (fabulous) option. The Aquatic and Fitness Center at 1735 Simpson Avenue has a 25-meter indoor saltwater pool that's open to members • 609-398-6900. Tennis OC has turf and hard surface tennis courts for public use, plus a hitting wall at 34th Street. Modest rental fees are required in

summer. Court use is free off-season. The Rec Department hosts lessons, clinics, leagues and tournaments for young Murrays and Williams'. Attendants are on duty during the day. Courts may be reserved in person daily or up to a week in advance. Street Hockey Are you thinking... OC has street hockey? It's true. OC cements itself as a sports island with a permanent rink at 52nd Street. Soccer Public soccer fields are located at Tennessee Avenue near Bay Avenue and at 15th Street & Haven Avenue. Baseball/Softball/Volleyball Diamonds are located at 5th Street & Bay Avenue and at 35th Street & Haven Avenue. Public Volleyball courts are found at 6th Street and 19th Street on the beach. 31

Whether you imagine yourself a pirate, princess, or puppy, you'll find a suitable playground for your make believe (and good old fashioned running around) fun. There are tons of gyms on (and off) the island including the Aquatic & Fitness Center at 1735 Simpson. They have strength and cardiovascular equipment training space, an exercise studio for aerobics, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and martial arts, indoor cycling, personal training, racquetball court, child care, and youth programming spaces. 33

ROM the frenetic buzz of the casinos, to the serenity of the Savannah, our surrounding area will keep you entertained, cultured, and smart. In just a short drive from the island, you can put yourself face to face with a lion, tiger, and bear. Oh my! The Cape May County Zoo is a splendid park with playground, shops, rides, and of course, an easily walkable zoo. And it's all just about 20 minutes south. Head in the other direction, and you'll be treated to a skyline filled with casinos that are hopping on the inside (on a clear day, this gorgeous view can be seen from the island's north end beaches too). A little further north at the tip of Atlantic City is the AC Aquarium, a little gem of a spot perfect for any age for a few hours, or an entire day. A quick drive west and you'll see the red and white pillars of a castle - it's Storybook Land! Enter a fairy tale setting and enjoy rides, gardens, refreshments and more. Or take an afternoon and enjoy the charm of Historic Smithville, a charming village of shops, restaurants, and activities. As you can probably tell, we have a lot of fun going on both on and off island. There are lighthouses, museums, historical buildings and more just waiting to be discovered by you.

MATURE AMERICA PAGEANT Ocean City presents the Mr. Mature America Pageant for Men 55 years and older, first event of its kind in the United States. SEPTEMBER 11 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY "A Day to Remember" will include music, prayer and reflections on the memory of lives lost and on the community spirit that was renewed in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. PARACHUTE PYROTECHNIC SHOW Several highly trained and specially licensed Team Fastrax™ demonstrators exit aircraft 6,000 feet above Ocean City’s beach and Boardwalk. Brilliant white or multi-colored projectile pyrotechnics are then ignited and flown in formation, creating a dazzling display for spectators on the ground. 8pm jump with a landing on the 7th Street beach. CEAN City’s history is a tale of whale hunters, ship wrecks, and desire for a Christian retreat. Years before the first European settlers dubbed it “Peck’s Beach,” the island was a summer fishing camp for native Lenni-Lenape people and also served as a grazing land for cattle driven from the mainland. The barrier island of dunes, meadows, beach and cedar swamps took its first name from John Peck, who used the island as a staging area for his shore-based whaling operation. Original ownership of the land is traced to the family of Richard Somers, one of America’s first naval heroes. Only an intrepid few made their homes here, as getting on and off the island was exclusively by water. The seeds of a future city were sown in 1879, when four Methodist ministers saw in Peck’s Beach the ideal place to establish a Christian

retreat and camp meeting. Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and William Burrell coined the name “Ocean City,” laid out a street grid, built utilities and sold lots for cottages, hotels and businesses. The first building of what would become the Tabernacle was finished in 1881, along with the island’s first school. The first bridge went up in 1883 and the railroad soon followed, bringing both the devout in search of religious retreat and vacationers seeking solace from the noise of the city. Since those early days, Ocean City has transformed itself into “America’s Greatest Family Resort,” a top-rated vacation

destination. The Tabernacle is still a dynamic place for praise and worship. The legacy of the founders also remains in the absence of liquor sales within the city limits. Its status as a “dry” town is one important reason Ocean City has become a family favorite. To learn more, visit the Historical Museum at 17th Street & Simpson Ave. OC’s timeline is cataloged and preserved there: the growth of the early city and Boardwalk, the 1901 wreck of the four masted Sindia, the 1927 fire and the battle over “Blue Laws.” Ocean City has remained a sought-after vacation destination through all the economic and political changes Americans have seen over the past 142 years.
