Getting to our Island Because of its close proximity to three major US cities (Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC). Ocean City is easily accessible by car, train, plane, and bus. Four Bridge Connections

1. On the north end of town, the Ocean Drive/Longport Bridge leads to Longport and northern Somers Point. Accessible via Wesley Avenue. 2. In the heart of town, the Howard Stainton Memorial Causeway (9th Street) takes Route 52 to Somers Point and Garden State Parkway Exit 30. Accessible via 9th Street. This is a walkable bridge with a pedestrian lane and a fishing pier. Vacationers and locals enjoy “walking the bridge” as they take in the gorgeous water views. 3. At 34th Street, the Roosevelt Boulevard bridge leads to Marmora, Upper Township and Garden State Parkway Exit 25.

The Beach

This is world-famous sand (a little more than eight miles of it, to be exact) and one afternoon lounging on it will help you understand why Ocean City is a vacation tradition for generations of families. The sand is clean, silky soft and plentiful, though you won’t have to walk far to find a perfect spot for your beach blanket. For more information on beach rules, please see page 14.

Alcoholic Beverages

Ocean City is a “dry” town, one of a handful in the state of New Jersey. Alcohol is not sold anywhere on the island and alcohol consumption is prohibited in all public places, including the beach. Visitors can purchase alcohol before they enter the island.

Parking

The best way to enjoy Ocean City is to leave your car parked at your rental home, B&B, hotel, motel or guest house. The island is very walkable and bikeable. That said, sometimes a car is a necessity and you’ll see plenty of parking spaces throughout the entire island, both metered and free. Meters run from May 1 through October 31, so please check carefully before you leave your car. For your convenience, many meters now 12 oceancityvacation.com 800-BEACH-NJ

Bicycling

“The bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind,” said William Saroyan. One ride around OC on your bike or surrey and you’ll more than likely agree. A bike path runs through the center of town on Haven Avenue between 9th and 34th Streets. The Boardwalk allows bikes from 5am to Noon in the summer season and all day during the off-season. Additional shared-use bike lanes and bike-friendly roads run throughout town. Helmets are required in New Jersey for all riders under 17 and recommended for everyone. Bicyclists should ride with traffic and obey all posted signs and signals. Ocean City has many bicycle and surrey rental companies. Visit www.bikeocnj.org to learn more. .

Furry Friends

Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach October 1 to April 30. Guide dogs are allowed on the beach at any time. In the southend of the island youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find the Ocean City Dog Park at 45th Street & Haven Avenue. The park is open dawn to dusk with a Paw Pass required for entry. Keeping it Clean

Ocean City relies on you to help it stay beautiful, clean, and free of litter. Please drop your trash in a proper receptacle. Ocean City recycles plastic, glass, aluminum and paper. These items should be separated from regular trash.

Call 911 to summon police, fire or rescue by phone. Tune your radio to 1620 AM for updates from Ocean Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office of Emergency Management during any public emergency, including severe weather. To contact Ocean City Police for a non-emergency, call 609-399-9111.

A Beach for Everyone

match your style... in the northend of the island, you’ll find wide beaches with large sweeping dunes and lovely pieces of driftwood. These beaches tend to be a little more sleepy and quiet. The beaches off the Boardwalk are usually bustling with activity and fun. If you like to be near restrooms and plenty of food options, this is your best bet. As you head south, the beaches are still well attended, some by the same families year after year.

Beach Tags

Beach tags are required for everyone 12

Daily tags are $5; weekly tags are $10; seasonal tags are $25 and are sold at a discount through May 31. Comfort Stations

Boardwalk restrooms are located at: 1st Street, 6th Street, Music Pier, 11th Street, and 12th Street. There are also public restrooms at City Hall, 34th Street Playground and 58th Street Beach. All bathrooms are handicapped accessible. Family restrooms are located at 1st and 12th Streets. All restroom hours are subject to weather and crowd conditions. A privately-owned bathhouse provides showers and changing rooms at 13th Street & Ocean Avenue, 9am to 7pm daily, weather permitting. • 609-399-7121.

Accessible Beaches

Beach access for visitors with a lack of mobility is available at 1st, 6th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 14th, 26th, 29th, 34th, 36th, 40th, 43rd, 46th, 50th, 51st, 52nd, 53rd, 55th, 57th and 59th Streets.

The City’s Surf Chair program operates the free beach-accessible wheelchair service Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The chairs are available on a daily and weekly basis at Sports and Civic Complex at 6th & Boardwalk. Reservations are recommended. • 609-525-9304.

GUARDED BEACHES •The beaches are fully-guarded the last week in June to Labor Day, 10am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5:30pm weekends and holidays. There are a limited number of beaches guarded during the off-season. •Swimming is permitted only on guarded beaches when lifeguards are on duty. •Beaches marked with an asterisk (*) are guarded from the Saturday before Memorial Day to the week after Labor Day, manpower permitting. •Surfing is permitted at beaches marked with an (S). •The lifeguard schedule is subject to change. island neighborhoods Ocean City has communities and neighborhoods each with their own personality and charm - explore them all.

There are a lot of neighborhoods packed into Ocean City’s eightmiles. Though you may only recognize some of their names, like the Gardens or Boardwalk, the communities here are plentiful, each unique and charming in their own right.

North End

Ocean City’s northernmost tip is home to quiet curved streets with lovely homes, each with its own look and feel. This section is referred to as “The Gardens” and there are plenty of them! The beautiful tree lined

streets have a distinct neighborhood vibe and while there are many residences, there are also several shops and eateries that call this section of the island home. Beachwalkers in the North End can easily see the Atlantic City skyline across the Great Egg Harbor Inlet and, of course, Longport’s southern shore. This neighborhood is perfect for long bike rides or casual hand in hand strolls. There are playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, parks, and even a brand new skatepark.

tween the beach and the bay on Asbury Avenue. There are more than 100 shops and restaurants open year-round between 6th and 14th Streets. The Avenue is a destination for dining, shopping, and made-by-you gifts or souvenirs. It’s a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with shops, hair and nail salons, and one-ofa-kind boutiques – each with a unique point of view. Here you’ll also find City Hall, real estate agencies and banks. Downtown Asbury Avenue has its own schedule of special events and entertainment, including the famous spring and fall Block Parties, live music, kids’ activities and tons of parades – each as distinct and family-oriented as Ocean City itself. Bay and Marina District

Most people’s first view of Ocean City is of its gorgeous back bays. This is a mecca

for water sport lovers, fishermen/women, and boaters. It’s also home to the Bayside Center, a museum and institute of study devoted to the back bays. The Bayside Center offers camps all summer long and offers sailing lessons through the Ocean City Sailing Foundation. The Ocean City Yacht Club, located here in the Bay district, was established in 1901 and is home to one of the most competitive sailing programs in the Mid-Atlantic region. It’s also a fabulous spot to have your wedding.

The Boardwalk

As you ascend the ramps or stairs at 9th Street and the Boardwalk, you can smell the fragrances of caramel popcorn, delicious pizza, and crispy french fries. Then you walk just a little quicker knowing what deliciousness awaits you at the top. It’s not only

a feast for your stomach, the Boardwalk is a feast for eyes and ears as well. Running parallel to the gorgeous views of the ever-changing Atlantic Ocean is one element that makes the Boardwalk a premier destination, but also the unique shops, eateries, activities, Music Pier and amusement piers. There is literally so much to do here, that a week stay isn’t enough to take it all in. A favorite of many visitors and locals is a morning walk or jog along the entire span of the Boardwalk from St. James Place to 23rd Street. Since it’s 2.5 miles one way, a round trip virtually guarantees you an extra slice of pizza for dinner with no calorie worries. From 5th to 15th you’ll find the most shops, restaurants and attractions. The other streets offer a quieter scene with the same lush landscape and pristine ocean views. The entire Boardwalk is smoke free.

South End

As you make your way to OC’s southern section, the island narrows and the distance between the beach and the bay is close enough for a quick stroll to see the light change over the Atlantic as the sun begins its descent to watching it dip below the horizon over the bay. There are wide open streets here with lovely homes, shops and restaurants. The south end is perfect for both biking and walking. If hiking is your thing, head due south to the end of the island, where Corson’s Inlet State Park sits. The lush sandy trails offer a perfect beach terrain and all lead out to the ocean or inlet. Bird lovers and nature lovers will enjoy taking these trails any time of the year.

Like beacons calling you to the shore, Ocean City’s Ferris Wheels can be seen day and night from two of the bridges heading into the island and from the Garden State Parkway. These wheels are surrounded by other rides offering both smaller and bigger thrills. There are two amusement piers along the Boardwalk, each offering a ton of fun, games, good food, and of course, rides for every member of the family.

Tee Time

Miniature golf on the island is a must do and has become a tradition for many visiting families. Grab your tiny pencil and your colored ball and club and it’s go time. Whether you’re dealing with a giant squid, a creepy skeleton, or a black light paradise, this is your year to win. There are miniature golf courses on the Boardwalk and off.

The OC Waterpark is like its own little adventure island - complete with lazy river, tons of slippery slides, (one that’s eight-stories high), Lil Buc’s Bay - a pirate ship kids play area, concession stands, Air Jumpers, and a climbing wall.

Larger fishing vessels also work the waters around Ocean City. With a group charter or party boat, cast a line by yourself or with your best mates. Surfing

There are three guarded surfing beaches in OC: Waverly Boulevard (in the Northend) and at 7th and 16th Streets, but surfing is allowed on all beaches when lifeguards are off duty. OC has consistent waves with good breaks, making it a popular spot for surfers. Check the local surf shops for wave reports, board rentals and lessons, plus go online for surf cams to see the conditions before you head out. If you’re a windsurfer or kitesurfer, you’ll find enough breeze over the Atlantic for a killer ride. Not sure what these are? Take a lesson while you’re here.

Boat Launches

Sailing

There are two public access boat ramps in Ocean City: one at Tennessee Avenue and the other in the southern tip at Corson’s Inlet State Park. The municipal boat ramp at Tennessee Avenue sits between 22nd and 23rd Streets on the bay. There you can pick up supplies, bait, ice, and refreshments. The ramp is in operation April 1 to September 30. Launch fees are $12 daily or $95 for the season before April 30, $120 after. Second seasonal pass is $50 before April 30 and $65 after. • 609-525-9289.

Parasailing

At the island’s southern tip, the state operates a boat launch at Corson’s Inlet State Park. The ramp is in operation year round. Fees are charged Memorial Day to Labor Day, $12 daily or $60 annually for NJ residents; $20 daily, $80 annually for non-NJ residents • 609-861-2404.

If you’ve always imagined yourself a salty sailor, but don’t know the difference between a jibe and a tack, then spend a day taking a sailing lesson. OC’s waters on any given day are home to gorgeous sailboats peacefully streaming across the bay or ocean. Rentals, lessons and sailing camps are available for every level of sailor - adults and kids. Camps are offered at the Ocean City Yacht Club and through the Ocean City Sailing Foundation, ocsailingfoundation.org. It’s hard not to get inspired when you’re laying on the beach, look up and see two people having the time of their life, soaring hundreds of feet above you out over the ocean. Parasailing is an incredible way to get a personalized, birds-eye view of the island and its surroundings. Don’t forget to wave to us below!

Fishing

Can’t think of anything better than casting a line while on vacation? In OC, you’re not alone! There are plenty of ways to fish the waters around our island. You can surf fish, pier fish, take a fishing charter cruise, or head out on your own boat. Anglers around these parts land bluefish, flounder, sea bass, tautog (blackfish), kingfish, shark and the famous striped bass (rockfish). Fishermen flock to the beach during the “blitz,” when stripers pass through by the thousand, following schools of bunker. Spring and autumn bluefish runs are equally dramatic, as the feeding reaches frenzy proportions. In the bays and creeks, weakfish (sea trout) are a favorite catch, along with sea bass, “snapper” blues, croaker and flounder. Just north of town, parts of the old Longport Bridge have been converted to a fishing pier. In the heart of town, the 9th Street bridge causeway has its own fishing pier. And south of town the Ocean Drive/Rush Chattin Bridge was designed specially to accommodate anglers. Get the kids involved! The tasty blueclaw crab is easy to catch with line or trap in the backbays and creeks. Kids love outsmarting the feisty crustaceans. Ask the bait shop for a rundown on size limits. OCEAN CITY’S HISTORY IS A RICH tapestry of events stretching back to the late 19th century. Years before the first European settlers dubbed it “Peck’s Beach,” the island was a summer fishing camp for native Leni- Lenape people and also served as a grazing land for cattle driven from the mainland. The barrier island of dunes, meadows, beach and cedar swamps took its first name from John Peck, who used the island as a staging area for his shorebased whaling operation. Original ownership of the land is traced to the family of Richard Somers, one of America’s first naval heroes. Only an intrepid few made their homes here, as getting on and off the island was exclusively by water.

The seeds of a future city were sown in 1879, when four Methodist ministers saw in Peck’s Beach the ideal place to establish a Christian retreat and camp meeting. Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake and William Burrell coined the name “Ocean City,” laid out a street grid, built utilities and sold lots for cottages, hotels and businesses. The first building of what would become the Tabernacle was finished in 1881, along with the island’s first school. The first bridge went up in 1883 and the railroad soon followed, bringing both the devout in search of religious retreat and vacationers seeking solace from the noise of the city. Since those early days, Ocean City has transformed itself into “America’s Great-

est Family Resort,” a top-rated vacation destination. The Tabernacle is still a dynamic place for praise and worship. The legacy of the founders also remains in the absence of liquor sales within the city limits. Its status as a “dry” town is one important reason Ocean City has become a family favorite.
