Prospective tram drivers: no thanks Some former operators say health, safety concerns led them to sit out this season By Mallory Panuska Staff Writer (May 14, 2021) Ocean City Boardwalk trams will officially return Memorial Day weekend — with no mask mandate — after a 2020 hiatus. But with concerns cited about covid-19 and violent incidents that occurred on the Boardwalk last summer, drivers are not exactly lining up to get behind the wheels. Ocean City Transportation Department Operations Manager Steve Bartlett said during a Transportation
Committee meeting this week that the number of drivers employed now will allow for a total of five trams to run at any particular hour this summer, a reduction from the 12 that ran pre-covid. He said recruiting drivers has been challenging. “A lot of it has to do with what went on on the Boardwalk last June … ” he said. “It has a lot to do with covid. I stated to you last time we were making all these calls that I made 13 calls to 13 former tram employees and I got one application. Everybody else said, ‘no, we’re not interested in coming back.’” Mayor Rick Meehan, who serves as an advisor on the committee, said via email after the meeting that safety
concerns over the incidents last year were possible reasons drivers are not returning for the season, but that other reasons were more likely. “Remember the [trams] did not even run last year and the isolated instance you are referring to occurred very late in the evening after the trams would have stopped running,” he said. The two incidents, a stabbing and a beating, happened around 10:30 p.m. on June 9. During the peak of the summer season in a normal year the trams run until midnight.
