Burying lines on Balto. Ave. requires change in walkway

Tourism Dept. consultant’s spouse linked to company

By Greg Wehner Staff Writer (Nov. 26, 2021) The design phase for burying utilities between North Division and 15th streets in Ocean City is underway, though planners are currently stuck on how wide the sidewalks should be. The nearly $20 million project, the bulk of which will be paid to Delmarva Power, includes the burying of all utility lines — power, cable, and phone lines —along with widening the sidewalks to include space for equipment such as transformer boxes and switches. Sections of the roadway between 15th and 33rd streets and from the inlet to North Division Street had utilities buried years ago in the right of way as individual projects. Like those projects, the city will pay the money out of the general fund. Burying the lines offers two benefits. The first is that it will bolster the grid against powerful storms that take down utility poles and powerlines. The second is that it will look better, aesthetically, according to City Engineer Terry McGean. The Baltimore Avenue right of way is 75 feet wide, but only 44 feet of that See UTILITY Page 4

By Greg Wehner Staff Writer (Nov. 26, 2021) One company has been dismissed from the competitive bidding for Ocean City government’s marketing business next year following officials’ discover that a consultant working with the city’s tourism department is married to an individual at the agency. City Manager Doug Miller said last week that Baltimore-based TBC Inc. was no longer in the running as a potential advertising company. Ocean City officials began their hunt for a new advertising company this month, accepting 10 bids in response to a request for proposals from companies across the country. The companies that submitted bids included Mariner Marketing out of Columbia, Maryland, TBC Inc., Harvey Agency of Baltimore, Glen Burnie-based Integrated Designs, which has worked on the Walksmart Ocean City campaign, and Fuse Ideas out of Boston, Massachusetts. Some of the other agencies are Beyond Spots and Dots, Paradise Advertising, and the Bellweather Agency. Neighbors object to Margaritaville’s size By Mallory Panuska Staff Writer (Nov. 26, 2021) As plans for a massive Margaritaville resort take shape along 13th and 14th streets in Ocean City, several nearby condominium owners are not so happy about their potential new neighbor. In recent weeks, condominium owners within the

Sea Mist community along the west side of Baltimore Avenue directly across from the former Phillips Beach Plaza hotel — where the new project is slated for construction — have been asking city officials to reconsider the plans. “Our community is very concerned with the magnitude of this project and what negative impacts a

project of this size will have on the surrounding communities and negative impact on this Boardwalk region of Ocean City,” Sea Mist unit owner Ross Rappaport said in a Nov. 15 email to the mayor, council members and planning officials. “It simply doesn’t fit.” See CONDO Page 6
