YEAR IN PHOTOS In keeping with our annual end-ofyear tradition, the final issue of the Bayside Gazette will feature photos depicting many of the news and features that dominated Ocean Pines, Berlin and Worcester County in 2023. The pages contain a mixture of
submitted, courtesy, file and staffshot photos with descriptions reminding viewers why they ran in the first place. Next week, for the first issue of 2024, we will return to our regular news coverage. Happy new year!
NEW BERLIN COUNCIL MEMBERS Three Berlin Council members — Dean Burrell, Steve Green and Jay Knerr – officially took office after the first of the year. Elected in October 2022, Burrell and Knerr were incumbents and Green, who serves as publisher of the Maryland Coast Dispatch newspaper, was a newcomer. Their terms last until October 2026.
PINES SKATE PARK VANDALIZED A “No Trespassing” sign prohibits visitors to the skate park in Ocean Pines last January. The park was vandalized during the first week of the year and closed for repairs.
HERON PARK DEBATE Palmer and Sandy Gillis discuss their proposal for the Heron Park property during a working meeting of the mayor and council in July. Numerous town residents were there to listen and comment on the proposal.

NEW PINES FIRE STATION The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department’s South Station Fire House on Ocean Parkway has been a hot topic of discussion this year. In February, department officials launched a capital campaign to build a new station to bring it up to code and provide safer conditions for emergency responders.
CRACKDOWN AT TIKI TIM’S The entrance of Tiki Tim’s, the bar behind The Globe on Broad Street, is pictured in February. The owner of the prominent spot in the heart of downtown Berlin was ordered by members of the historic district commission to remove some elements and submit a new plan for improvements during a meeting early in the year. Later, another owner took over and submitted new plans.

NEW PINES ELECTION CONTRACTOR The Ocean Pines Board of Directors are pictured at their May meeting. The board voted during the meeting to hire Election Trust, a third-party company out of Washington State to run the 2023 board elections. The company sent ballots out late, which caused the board to extend the voting period and delay the annual meeting, but the vote count was without incident.

A group of Stephen Decatur High School staff members pose for a photo while dressed in black on June 9 in protest of the county commissioners voting days earlier to fund the board of education’s full fiscal 2024 requested budget. The school budget was a major issue this year and is still a hot topic as members of the board of ed, teachers and staff continue fighting with some county commissioners over transparency and funding allocations.
GAVIN KNUPP HITAND-RUN A memorial for 14year-old Ocean Pines resident Gavin Knupp is set up where he was hit and killed on Grays Corner Road in July 2022. The incident remains unsolved at the close of 2023. Tyler Mailloux, 23, of Berlin, was charged with 17 offenses related to leaving the scene of the incident, but the charges were dismissed in August due to where they were filed in court. Worcester County prosecutors are appealing the decision and a hearing is tentatively set for March to hear evidence.

BLACK EYED SUSAN SOLD The Black Eyed Susan drives into the Slaughter Creek Marina in Dorchester County on Nov. 16 after a two-day trek from Snow Hill. The saga of the riverboat began in 2019, when Worcester County and Snow Hill staff members pushed for the town to buy the 111-foot vessel to increase year-round tourism. The boat, which needed some repairs, took its maiden local voyage in 2021. But less than eight months later, it was officially docked again after a U.S. Coast Guard inspection revealed a $600,000 price tag to bring the vessel up to the standard that would allow it to transport passengers. Town officials decided to put the boat up for bid, and after some failed attempts, ultimately sold it to John Butz, the owner of Slaughter Creek Marina on Taylor Island, for a loss. The Black Eyed Susan officially left Worcester County in mid-November to dock at its new home, where it was set to become a marina restaurant.
