Downtown Ocean City creates memories Downtown is home to the quintessential old town Ocean City landmarks, places that every generation of your family remembers fondly, and looks forward to returning to year after year. And if this is your first visit, this is where you will capture an Ocean City memory that will bring you back for years to come. Whether it’s strolling on the boards, grabbing a bite at your favorite restaurant, riding your favorite ride or playing your favorite game, when temperatures drop low and stay there for what feels like eternity, these are the places you day dream about. It is fair to say that no trip to Ocean City is com-
plete without spending time on our fabulous Boardwalk and exploring the downtown area. There is something very special about sharing an experience that transcends generations! Spend some time exploring the Boardwalk businesses as well as those off the beaten path or bayside, you’ll find local favorites, or create new ones. Where else can you find a museum, fine jewelry, amusement rides and games, candy stores, fine

With so much to see and do in downtown Ocean City, why not just stay where you play? Downtown offers a number of hotels and motels that range in Continued on Page 14

706 Philadelphia Ave 410-289-4891 A crowd listens to the band Full Circle play at the free Thursday evening concert at Sunset Park.
Sunset Park is hidden gem in Ocean City’s downtown Located on the bay at S. Division Street and S. Philadelphia Avenue, the park sits at the original location of the railroad bridge that crossed the bay from West Ocean City. The storm of 1933 destroyed the bridge, but Sunset Park was designed to reflect railroad style features, the bricks that line the perimeter are from the original train station. Featuring a lighted stage, restrooms, and a short pier that provides outstanding views of the bay, it’s no wonder Sunset Park is becoming increasingly popular as a venue for weddings and other special occasions. If you’re interested in renting the park, contact Tammie Beres with OC Recreation and Parks at 410-2500125. Sunset Park is home to special events throughout the year. Every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. throughout July and August, the Ocean City Development Corporation and the Town of Ocean City host the Sunset Park Party Nights concert series. These are free and family friendly events that resort residents and visitors enjoy, at least in part because of
the park’s amazing sunset backdrop. The Ocean City Recreation Boosters sell beverages, including beer and wine, at these weekly events, with proceeds going toward youth programs. Also on the schedule is the Ocean City Museum Society’s eighth annual Children’s Day on the Bay on Sunday, Aug. 5 from noon to 3 p.m. This is another free family-friendly event that includes music, games, live animals and more. Brown Box Theatre takes the stage on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. with its production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” Admission is free. Shore Craft Beer and the OCDC will be hosting the fourth annual Shore Craft Beer Fest on Saturday, Oct. 27. This has become an increasingly popular event, with several local breweries pouring their unique beers and local food trucks and vendors helping to make this a great day in the park. Sunset Park has something for everyone, so check out some of these special events this summer, or host your own.

There will be at least 15 breweries represented from Delmarva, as well as food trucks and live music by Johnny Bling band. This will be an afternoon of fun. The first three Shore Craft Beer Fests were a great success and this one is expected to be even bigger and better. Sunset Park is located at S. Division Street and the bay, just south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station. Delmarva-based breweries that have attended in the past include Evolution Craft Brewing Co. of Salisbury, 3rd Wave Brewing of Delmar, Ocean City Brewing of Ocean City, Backshore Brewing of Ocean City, Fin City Brewing of Ocean City, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery of Milton, Burley Oak Brewing of Berlin, RAR Brewing of Cambridge and many more.
General admission gate will open at 1:30 p.m. and run until 4:30 p.m. A special VIP admission will be available for those wanting an extra hour of tasting craft beer plus a Tshirt to commemorate the day. Entrance for VIPs starts at 12:30 p.m. and includes time to talk to the local brewers and sample a little earlier. General admission tickets will be
$35 the day of the event. The VIP tickets will be $50 tickets the day of the event. This will be a child and petfriendly event. To purchase tickets go to www.shorecraftbeerfest.com. New lighting program helps police with crime prevention
The Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC), in coordination with the Town of Ocean City and the Ocean City Police Department, has created a voluntary program for installing new light fixtures along alley ways in downtown Ocean City. The intent of the program is to provide lighting of the alleys for improved crime prevention and also to improve public safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The first phase of this pilot program will target Washington Lane, between Fourth and 10th streets. The program will reimburse property and business owners up to 50 percent of the cost of purchase and installation of light fixtures, up to a maximum of $500 assistance from OCDC. In order to qualify for the reimbursement: • Participation is first come/first served basis until funds have been expended • The business or property must abut Washington Lane, between Fourth and 10th streets • The light fixture and placement must be LED for energy efficiency, and must comply with Downtown Alley Lighting Program standards and Town of Ocean City standards. Nothing plain about annual plein air competition
The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 13th annual plein air event — “ArtistsPaint OC” — Aug. 8-12. The public is also invited to view and collect the art during the Wet Paint Sale on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 94th Street, bayside. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air,” used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and watchers gather to see the painters make art right before their eyes. Baltimore Magazine listed “Artists Paint OC” in their “50 Reasons Why We Love Our Beach.” The annual event brings in 50 plein air painters and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from around the country. Artists will paint Wednesday through Saturday at picturesque spots around the resort. The Art League’s Facebook page will list some locations. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the artists will bring their best work to the Ocean City Center for the Arts to be judged and participate in the Wet
Paint Sale that evening. The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is free and open to the public. Last year, it drew a crowd of more than 300 who took advantage of the opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices. The Wet Paint Sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest wraps up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City and paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. At 11 a.m. they will return to the Boardwalk at South Division Street, where their work will be judged and winners announced. The public may purchase the art off-the-easel until 1 p.m. The Ocean City Development Corp. sponsors the Quick Draw Contest. The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August. Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan believes many visitors are surprised to learn the resort has a vibrant and active arts community, and the annual plein air event reinforces that awareness. “I cannot think of a more picturesque setting than the scenic views of Ocean City to inspire their creativity,”
Artist Alison Leigh Menke of Silver Spring with her impressionistic representation of the Ocean City Boardwalk competes in plein air events throughout the region.
Meehan said. “I look forward to watching these events grow as our residents and visitors realize that art is alive in Ocean City.” More information about the event is available online at www.artleagueofoceancity.org or by calling the Ocean City Center for the Arts at 410-
524-9433. The Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94th St. is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to the community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs and community art projects.
