Come visit and discover your downtown What comes to mind when you think about downtown Ocean City? For some, it’s the sight of the looping roller coaster, the sound of the arcade games and the smell of French fries and funnel cake on the Boardwalk. It’s the joy that comes with a ticket to ride the Himalaya and walk around the amusements, inside and outdoors, with your favorite Boardwalk snack in hand. It’s the fun. For others, it’s the beach ball water tower that greets you the moment you cross the Route 50 bridge head-
ing into Ocean City. You see it clearly in your head as soon as you hear “Ocean City!” followed by the sight of the famous White Marlin fountain, the artistic outdoor murals and brightly painted utility boxes scattered along every block, and even the sweeping edges and curves of the Ocean Bowl Skate Park — the oldestoperating skate park in the U.S. All the creative projects that give OC its unique flavor: It’s the art and culture. And then there’s also the charm of the old beach homes, churches and
guest houses that line the streets of downtown OC. Your grandparents remember them from their trips to the beach decades ago, and someday your kids will remember those beautiful historical markers from their vacations, too. From the Life-Saving Station Museum and Watch Tower to the Trimper’s carousel that dates back to 1902, all the way out to the ocean in the seaside Pier Building, there are some remarkable places that every generation has gotten to enjoy. It’s
the history. Just what makes downtown Ocean City such a magical place will be a little different for everyone, but that’s what makes it so special. The fun, the art and culture, and the history come in many forms. Where else would you be able to find jewelry shops and Jet skis, bars and boat trips, fireworks and fishing, skateboarding and sundaes, parasailing and people-watching all in one place? In downtown Ocean City, there’s Continued on Page 7

Boxes may be utilitarian, but have artistic purpose as well The painted utility boxes have been one of the OCDC’s most popular programs since the first Delmarva Power utility box was painted by the Art League of Ocean City in 2004. We now have painted 35 utility boxes under the OCDC Public Art Program. In 2019 several new boxes were painted. Several of the older painted boxes are being repainted with new artwork. One utility box completed under the OCDC Public Art Program has been painted in Ocean City by artist, Halie Torris from the Art League of Ocean City. The public art project, sponsored by the Crystal Beach Oceanfront Hotel is located on Washington Lane just north of 25th Street. A second box was also completed downtown. This box has been painted by volunteers with the Ocean City Lionesses and assisted by Ali Jacobs of OC Paint Experience. This public art
project is located at the northeast corner of S. Philadelphia Avenue and S. Division Street. This painted utility box highlights some of the community programs that the OC Lionesses are involved with. A third box was also completed under the OCDC’s Public Art Program. The box has been painted in downtown Ocean City by artist, Bill Ciocco. The public art project is located at the southwest corner of S. Baltimore Avenue and Worcester Street. PPG Paints on 8th Street in Ocean City donated some of the paint and material. Delmarva Power provided approval to the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) to use these utility boxes as part of its OCDC Public Art Program. For more information about this program contact the OCDC at (410) 289-7739 or go to www.ocdc.org.

Plein air event allows public to see artists as they work The Art League of Ocean City invites the public to view art being created on the spot during the 14th annual plein air event — “Artists Paint OC” — Aug. 7 – 11. The public is also invited to view and collect the art during the art sales on Saturday and Sunday at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94th St. bayside. “En plein air” is a French expression that means “in the open air,” used to describe the art of painting outdoors. Plein air events take place wherever the scenery is inspirational, artists congregate to paint it, and people gather to watch art being created right before their eyes. Baltimore Magazine listed “Artists Paint OC” in their “50 Reasons Why We Love Our Beach.” The annual event brings in 50 plus plein air painters to the resort and features many popular regional artists as well as painters from around the country. Artists will paint Wednesday through Saturday at picturesque spots around the area. The Art League’s Facebook page will list some locations. On Saturday, Aug. 10, the artists will bring their best work to the
Ocean City Center for the Arts to be judged and participate in the Wet Paint Sale that evening, a celebratory event that brings the artists together with each other and the public who is eager to see what they have produced. The party includes live music, complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. The Wet Paint Sale from 6-8 p.m. is free and open to the public and an opportunity to collect original artwork of local scenes at affordable prices. The exhibit and sale continues at the Arts Center on Sunday. Sunday morning’s Quick Draw Contest and Sale, sponsored by the Ocean City Development Corp., will wrap up the event. Artists will gather in downtown Ocean City near South Division St. and the Boardwalk to paint against the clock from 9-11 a.m. At noon they will return to the Arts Center where their work will be judged and winners announced. The public may purchase this Quick Draw art off-the-easel from noon until 3 p.m. at the Arts Center. The plein air artwork will be on exhibit at the Ocean City Center for the Arts through the end of August.

Plein air Ocean City mayor Rick Meehan believes many visitors are surprised to learn the resort has a vibrant and active arts community, and the annual plein air event reinforces that awareness. “I cannot think of a more picturesque setting than the scenic views of Ocean City to inspire their creativity,” Meehan said. “Art is alive and flourishing in Ocean City.” More information about the event
is available online at www.artleagueofoceancity.org, by calling the Ocean City Center for the Arts at 410-5249433, or on Facebook/Artists Paint OC: A Plein Air Event. The Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94th St. is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the visual arts to the community through education, exhibits, scholarship, programs and community art projects. Financial support comes primarily from membership dues and sponsors.

Directories provide business locations Off-Boardwalk shops to be listed on second directory set for summer installation
As you stroll the fabulous Ocean City Boardwalk you have probably noticed and read the Boardwalk Business Directory panels that are located at six locations along this 2.25 mile stretch. These six-foot- tall directories list all the retail, food/beverage, lodging, and attractions along the full boardwalk stretch. These six directories are located at the south tram facility at S. 1st Street, Caroline Street comfort station, N. Division Street archway, 9th Street comfort station, 18th Street, and 27th Street tram facility. Each Spring, volunteers from the OCDC walk the Boardwalk and update this extensive master list. OCDC has provided these informative directories since 2013. Visitors have found these directories very helpful in finding specific places to eat, drink and shop. These directories are provided for free by the OCDC. OCDC members are highlighted on these panels. With the success of these Boardwalk direc-
tories, OCDC has now completed a new Off the Boardwalk Directory that will be installed for this summer. These directory panels will list and locate retail, food and beverage, lodging, services, worship centers, and public facilities in the area between the Inlet and 4th Street. This area is the designated Main Street Maryland district in Ocean City. These panels will be located at Transit Station on S. Division Street, South Tram facility on Boardwalk at S 1st Street, Somerset Street – just west of S. Baltimore Avenue by private bus shuttle, Boardwalk archway at N. Division Street, public parking lot between N. Division Street and 1st Street, and on 3rd Street near City Hall. These locations were selected due to the high number of pedestrians at these locations to view them. OCDC members are highlighted, too on these panels. OCDC expects to update and improve these listings annually. So we hope you find these directory panels of use and interest. There’s always something going on at the Boardwalk, as well as off the Boardwalk in Downtown Ocean City.

Check out some of resort’s oldest buildings downtown Have you ever thought about what some of the oldest buildings are that exist in Ocean City? Over the past few decades some of Ocean City’s older buildings have been demolished for a host of reasons; structure integrity, fire, and for market reasons. However, the oldest buildings that still exist are found in the Downtown area which is the oldest section of Ocean City. Some have been modified, some moved and others added onto. All have their own unique stories. Below is a list of some of these older buildings. As one travels north along Atlantic Avenue and Baltimore Avenue one will see many buildings that were constructed in the 1930’s and for the most part retained many of their architectural characteristics of this era. Such features include simple buildings with deep porches, clapboard and shingle siding, light colored buildings, and pitched roofs. There are only two buildings in Ocean City designated on the National Register of Historic Places. They are St. Paul’s By The Sea Episcopal Church at Baltimore Avenue and 3rd Street which was constructed in 1900 and was des-

ignated in 2008. The other is the Bay Breeze cottage located at 706 St. Louis Avenue that was constructed in 1950 and provided this National Register designation in 2018. If you have the time one should take on of the self-guided walking tours that highlight many of the older buildings in downtown Ocean City. These walking tour maps are available at several locations in Ocean City but can be accessed to on the OCDC website at www.ocdc.org and the Downtown Association of Ocean City at https://downtownassociation.net. It should be noted that several of the listed buildings in the original Downtown Association may no longer be in existence from this 2011 publication.
