Come visit and discover your downtown What comes to mind when you think about downtown Ocean City? For some, it’s the sight of the looping roller coaster, the sound of the arcade games and the smell of French fries and funnel cake on the Boardwalk. It’s the joy that comes with a ticket to ride the Himalaya and walk around the amusements, inside and outdoors, with your favorite Boardwalk snack in hand. It’s the fun. For others, it’s the beach ball water tower that greets you the moment you cross the Route 50 bridge head-
ing into Ocean City. You see it clearly in your head as soon as you hear “Ocean City!” followed by the sight of the famous White Marlin fountain, the artistic outdoor murals and brightly painted utility boxes scattered along every block, and even the sweeping edges and curves of the Ocean Bowl Skate Park — the oldestoperating skate park in the U.S. All the creative projects that give OC its unique flavor: It’s the art and culture. And then there’s also the charm of the old beach homes, churches and
guest houses that line the streets of downtown OC. Your grandparents remember them from their trips to the beach decades ago, and someday your kids will remember those beautiful historical markers from their vacations, too. From the Life-Saving Station Museum and watch tower to the Trimper’s carousel that dates back to 1902, all the way out to the ocean in the seaside pier building, there are some remarkable places that every generation has gotten to enjoy. It’s
the history. Just what makes downtown Ocean City such a magical place will be a little different for everyone, but that’s what makes it so special. The fun, the art and culture, and the history come in many forms. Where else would you be able to find jewelry shops and Jet skis, bars and boat trips, fireworks and fishing, skateboarding and sundaes, parasailing and people-watching all in one place? In downtown Ocean City, there’s Continued on Page 4

The Backshore crew is finding that more and more customers are returning each year to have their favorites, or to see what they’ll attempt next. Head Brewer Mathew Shockley and Manager/Assistant Brewer Nathan T Toodd brew on a daily basis and are constantly experimenting with new flavors and styles. Backshore has six beers on tap that are always changing. Whatever your taste in beer, you will find one to call your favorite. Styles range from complex, to rare, to mild summer ales used as “gateway” flavors to lure the masses into the craft beer world. There’s also a nitro line that hosts beers infused with coffffee or seasonally aged in bourbon barrels. Samples of all six craft beers are served in skateboard flights that come in various colors for sipping the award- winning beers that have made Backshore a craft beer destination. In addition to the everchanging six taps of craft beer, Backshore has also started doing monthly small batch 32oz Crowler releases called “Pulped and Pressed.” They are 8.5% ABV and this years batches will be Double IPA PA A’’S. Ocean City Today/Discover Downtown
Visit some of Ocean City’s oldest businesses As most residents know, as well as visitors to Ocean City, Ocean City is primarily comprised of family-owned and operated businesses. This goes back to the beginning of the resort days. There have been a number of larger, national and regional chains that have entered the Ocean City community in the past few years, but for the most part the primary business type is still family owned. Some of these businesses have changed locations, others have been hit by fire and others have been rebuilt. Due to the nature and history of Ocean City, most of these businesses are located in the downtown area which is the oldest section of town. Here’s a list of some of the oldest businesses that started prior to 1969 (over 50 years ago) and still operating today. In most cases, the same families have been managing these businesses since they started: Candy Kitchen Shoppes — 1937 — 815 Atlantic Avenue — multiple locations. Alaska Stand — 1933 — 821 Atlantic Ave — original location at Wicomico Street and Boardwalk. Angler Restaurant — 1938 — 312 Talbot St. Anthony’s Carry out — 1960 — 1608 Philadelphia Ave. Dolle’s Candyland — 1906 — 500 S. Atlantic Ave. Dumser’s Dairyland — 1939 — 501 S. Atlantic Ave — multiple locations. Harbor Inn — 1935 — 216 Somerset St — Oldest bar in Ocean City. Fisher’s Popcorn — 1937 — 200 S. Atlantic Ave.
Julia’s Cannolis — 1967 — 1103 Atlantic Ave. Purple Moose Saloon — 1969 — 108 S. Atlantic Ave. Tony’s Pizza and Deck Bar — 1962 — 3 Atlantic Ave. Cork Bar and Grille — 1964 — 3 Wicomico St. Atlantic Hotel — 1923 — 401 S. Baltimore Ave. Commander Hotel — 1930 — 1401 Atlantic Ave. Original building demolished and rebuilt in 1997. Harrison Hall — 1951 — 1409 Atlantic Ave. Inlet Lodge — 1943 — 804 S. Atlantic Ave. Lankford Hotel — 1924 — 807 Atlantic Ave. Plim Plaza (Plimhimmon Hotel) — 1894 — 109 Atlantic Ave. The Virginia Lee — 1962 — 1003 Atlantic Ave. Shoreham Hotel — 1925 — 309 Atlantic Ave. Funcade arcade — 1963 — 905 Atlantic Ave. Jolly Roger Amusement Park — 1964 — 2901 Coastal Highway. Marty’s Playland arcade — 1940 — 5 Worcester St. Sportland arcade — 1945 — 506 S. Atlantic Ave. Trimper’s Amusement Park — 1893 — 700 S. Atlantic Ave — oldest public carousel. Bank of Ocean City — 1916 — 217 S. Baltimore Ave — multiple locations. Philips Seafood — 1956 — 2004 Philadelphia Ave. If you know of other businesses that started before 1969 and continue today, please let us know at inquire@ocdc.org. And make sure you visit these iconic Ocean City businesses. In the July 2019 Discover Downtown insert we’ll be looking at some of the oldest buildings in Ocean City.
Another utility box painted Another painted utility box has been completed under the OCDC’s Public Art Program. This box has been painted in downtown Ocean City by volunteers with the Ocean City Lionesses and assisted by Ali Jacobs of OC Paint Experience. This public art project is located at the northeast corner of S. Philadelphia Avenue and S. Division Street. This painted utility box highlights some of the community programs that the OC Lionesses are involved with. PPG Paints on 8th Street in Ocean City donated some of the paint and materials. Delmarva Power provided approval to the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) to use this utility box as part of its OCDC Public Art Program. For more information about this program, contact the OCDC at 410-2897739 or go to www.ocdc.org.
