Air National Guard Band concert June 29 The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast will present an exciting concert on Wednesday June 29, 2022 at 7 p.m. at Sunset Park at 700 South Philadelphia Avenue in Ocean City. The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast is the premiere military band from within the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast has played throughout the United States and abroad, and features a variety of classical, jazz, popular music, marches, patriotic favorites, and show tunes arranged for the concert band and other small ensembles. The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast was originally formed in 1942 in Rapid City, South Dakota as the 53d Army Air Forces Band. The Band of the Northeast is based at Fort Indiantown Gap as part of the Regional Support Group to the 193d Special Operations Wing stationed in Middletown, Pennsylvania. In 2010 and again in 2020, 10 members of the band deployed to several undisclosed locations throughout the Middle East. This deployment was the first of its type for the Air National Guard Band of the Northeast. The Band members performed well over 20 concerts in 75 days for allied and coalition forces, American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines, and Middle Eastern nationals during both military and civilian performances. The deployment raised the spirits of thousands of audience members from across the globe and inspired patriotism and the American Spirit in our friends from dozens of countries. The band is a 100 percent traditional Air National Guard squadron, with all 40 members having civilian careers, and meeting one weekend a month to rehearse and perform. Its ranks are filled with professional musicians, educators, students, administrators, salesmen, builders and other career fields.
The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast plays in formation as it performs one of its many concerts. The 40-member band will present a concert at Sunset Park in June.

Walk or ride, but see downtown Continued from Page 1 lowing Labor Day, until the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend with exceptions for SpringFest and SunFest). If walking, running or biking are not in your plans, your Boardwalk experience will be smooth sailing with a ride on the Ocean City Boardwalk tram, offering a great means of transportation north and south along the Boardwalk’s three-mile span. A half-hour ride, the tram will stop at most any location along the Boardwalk for entering or exiting passengers. Some say the best part of their tram ride is the slight easterly detour it takes around the Ocean City Pier, close to the Atlantic Ocean. You will hear, see and sometimes feel the sea breeze mist. Tram service is in effect from noon until midnight until Sept. 5. The fare to ride is $4 per person, per boarding – one way ride, and sold at the north and south Tram ticket booths, and on any operating Tram. Major credit cards and exact cash are accepted by a conductor located at the rear of the tram. Make memories with Ocean City’s world-class amusements located near the inlet end of the Boardwalk! Take in gorgeous views of the Atlantic while enjoying amusement park rides, such as Ferris wheels and roller coasters. The Ferris wheels are the best choice for panoramic water views.
Also, make sure to ride the carousel, one of the oldest in the country. Not interested in rides? Enjoy the numerous Boardwalk carnival games, popular local food specialties and touristy attractions. Fun for the whole family, Ocean City offers two venues to enjoy free outside entertainment. Bring the family and to select Sundays at Somerset Plaza. The plaza is located just steps off the Boardwalk on Somerset Street, between the Boardwalk and South Baltimore Avenue, offering live music (live bands or DJ music). For their 20th year, The O.C. Cruzers will showcase classic and vintage cars on select Sundays. Sunset Park is a hidden gem with native shore plantings, interpretive exhibits and a phenomenal panoramic view of the Assateague Island, the Sinepuxent Bay, Assawoman Bay, and the Ocean City Commercial Harbor. Located at South Division Street and Philadelphia Avenue, Sunset Park’s stage is home to concerts and gatherings in the summer such as the Sunset Park Party Nights on Thursday evenings in July and August. Concerts and events at both Somerset Plaza and Sunset Park are coordinated by the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC). You can find a full listing of these events within this special insert or by logging onto at www.OCDC.org.

Small resort had big-time boxing On July 24, 1899, Baltimore-born Joe Gans entered the boxing ring against Bostonian fighter Jack Dobbs. Gans knocked out Dobbs in less than four rounds. The scheduled 25-round contest was in Ocean City at the Seabright Casino, which was attached to the rear of the Trimper’s Seabright Hotel on the Boardwalk between South Division Street and South 1st Street. Joe “Old Master” Gans is considered by many to be one of the greatest lightweight boxers of all time. He was known for being quick on his feet with incredible footwork, fast combinations, and a “scientific” approach to his fighting. In 1891, at only 17-years-old, Gans became a pro boxer and was said to

have lost only four of his first 70 fights. On May 12, 1902, Gans matched against Lightweight Champion Frank Erne and not only won in the first round but took the title of first African American Lightweight World Champion. He held the title from 1902 to 1908, at a time when the color line laws typically prohibited Black fighters from sanctioned fights with white fighters. Just three years before his championship title, Joe Gans was in Ocean City, training for his Monday night fight with Jack Dobbs. According to the account in The Philadelphia Inquirer, “Only yesterday he met and disposed of five big and ambitious country boxers … hardly a day passes but one or another of the big countrymen around and near Ocean City put in an appearance to don the gloves, and always with the same result.” Another paper reporting on the upcoming fight states how there is a demand for tickets, with sales having amounted to more than $300. In 2022, that would be a little over $10,000. Not bad for a small-town boxing match. After the Gans and Dobbs fight, periodic boxing matches at the Seabright and other locations, such as the Atlantic Casino on the Boardwalk, were held until 1908.

Ocean City did not have a formal boxing space until 1929, when the former Ocean City mayor, Capt. William B. S. Powell, built an outdoor boxing arena on the northeast corner of South 1st Street and Baltimore Ave. In 1933, a business associate took over promoting the arena after Capt. Powell’s death, and it saw its last fight in the summer of 1936. Today, boxing is still a popular sport. You can find gyms promoting boxing for exercise or head over to an Ocean City bar to watch a match on the big screen. But if you could step back in time, specifically to July 24, 1899, it might be fun to imagine yourself taking a stroll on the recently renovated Boardwalk. The boards are now illuminated, raised, and widened, stretching up to 15th street. The night is young with

excitement in the air, and you catch people heading over to the Seabright Casino. Little do they know they are about to see a future world champion.
OCDC keeps visitors informed The Information Cottage, a service of OCDC’s Downtown Association, is located on the Boardwalk between North Division and Caroline Streets. This summer, it will be open 7-days a week, noon to 8 p.m. Nearly 24,000 visitors stopped
at the booth during the summer of 2021. Staff members and volunteers are always available to answer questions and recommend for the many accommodations, restaurants and attraction Ocean City has to offer.
