Another jewel in downtown: Sunset Park

Sunset Park, located along South Division Street between Philadelphia Avenue and the bay in downtown Ocean City, offers something different for the visitors and residents of Ocean City. Sunset Park has evolved into a great venue for special events of all sizes and varieties. Free music, Shakespeare plays, and other events are on the 2017 schedule. The park sits at the original location of the railroad bridge entering Ocean City from Old Bridge Road in West Ocean City. This railroad bridge was destroyed by the 1933 storm that hit Ocean City. However, the new park is designed with railroad style features, including the design of the restroom building, trellis, and the bricks located on the perimeter of the park are from the original train station once located along S. Philadelphia Avenue. This linear park contains a lighted entertainment stage, restrooms, environmental plaques, nice landscaping, and a short pier that provides fantastic views of the bay. Sunset Park is highlighted by a 60-foot-tall tower that is lit at night and can be seen from the Route 50 bridge as well as other downtown locations.

Sunset Park, a little gem downtown that hosts special events throughout the year.

For the past 10 years, the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and Town of Ocean City have worked with various local nonprofit organizations to bring free music concerts to Sunset Park, Ocean City’s newest public park. These concerts will be performed on Thursday evenings in July and

August starting at 7 p.m. Local nonprofit organizations sponsor individual events and performances throughout the year. Sunset Park is a beautiful setting and can even be rented out for private uses such as weddings and other private events. If interested in renting this space

one can contact the Town of Ocean City’s Recreation and Parks Department at 410-250-0125. So, make sure that you check out some of the special events at Sunset Park this summer. You can access information on music events at www.ocdc.org or www.ocean.com. Or call the OCDC at 410-289-7739.

OCDC recognizes ’16 achievements at annual meeting The Ocean City Development Corporation held its 17th annual meeting and awards ceremony at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub and Grille, Fouth Street and the Boardwalk on May 3. Chris Trimper, OCDC president, highlighted the projects and accomplishments of the past year. Several awards were presented to individuals, business owners and organizations that help lead the OCDC mission of revitalizing downtown Ocean City. The OCDC facade program promotes traditional Ocean City architecture design standards, which, in turn, help create a sense of community. The OCDC green building initiatives program promotes the installation of new long-term energy-efficient products that help reduce energy consumption. Under the facade program, OCDC has provided assistance to a total of 189 properties in downtown Ocean City. These upgrades have resulted in $5.7 million in private investment in downtown properties. The green building program has provided financial assistance to a total of 40 properties for the installation of energy-efficient windows, doors, and “cool” roofs. Although the OCDC provides financial assistance for the facade improvements, approximately 85 percent of these projects were paid for by the property owners. A Green Building/Facade Award was given to Spiro Buas for work completed at 712/714 Balti-

more Avenue. The following were recipients of Facade Improvement Awards: Stamatis and Marika Stakias at 106 Dorchester Street; Lauren Taylor, Daniel Taylor and Edmund Conner at 202 12th Street, Fisher’s Popcorn at 200 S. Atlantic Avenue. The OCDC Business Assistance Program provides help to new businesses with fixed interior improvements. This program helps to encourage new business development in downtown Ocean City. The Business Assistance Award was given to Ocean City Screams Haunted House at 14 Worcester Street. Under this program, OCDC has been able to assist 16 new businesses to open their doors to the downtown Ocean City community. The New Construction Award was given to the Difilippo family for the Hotel Monte Carlo Oceanfront (formerly The Royalton Hotel) located at 1101 Atlantic Avenue. The Event Award was presented to the Light Up

Downtown Winter Festival. This new event helps to further OCDC’s mission of revitalizing downtown Ocean City. The Worcester County Economic Development received the OCDC Organizational Award for its continued and future partnerships with the OCDC. Two individual awards were given: Kevin R. Brown, Town of Ocean City, chief building official and Tom Allen, OCDC volunteer. Also honored were four departing members of the OCDC Board of Directors, Patricia Ilczuk-Lavanceau, C. Terry Hough (former OCDC president), Jesse Houston and Jay Knerr (former OCDC president). Newly elected board members for 2017 are Spiro Buas, Kevin Gibbs, Blaine Smith, Reid Tingle and Joe Wilson. The OCDC Annual Meeting celebrates another successful year in revitalizing downtown Ocean City.
