Downtown Ocean City creates memories

Downtown is home to the quintessential old town Ocean City landmarks, places that every generation of your family remembers fondly, and looks forward to returning to year after year. And if this is your first visit, this is where you will capture an Ocean City memory that will bring you back for years to come. Whether it’s strolling on the boards, grabbing a bite at your favorite restaurant, riding your favorite ride or playing your favorite game, when temperatures drop low and stay there for what feels like eternity, these are the places you day dream about. It is fair to say that no trip to Ocean City is complete without spending time on our fabulous

Boardwalk and exploring the downtown area. There is something very special about sharing an experience that transcends generations! While there is no doubt that downtown OC is the link to past, with so many classic businesses that have been passed down from generation to generation, downtown has many new options as well. Spend some time exploring the Boardwalk businesses as well as those off the beaten path or bayside, you’ll find some local favorites, or create some new ones. Where else can you find a museum, fine jewelry, amusement rides and games, candy stores, fine dining, fast food, ice cream, donuts, popcorn, T-

shirt shops, surf gear, parasailing, boat trips, art shops, bike rentals, jet skis, pier fishing, bay fishing, off-shore fishing, skate park, basketball courts, tennis courts, ball fields, live music, oceanfront bars, bayside bars, side street bars, happy hours, dinner cruises, pizza, public art, free concerts in the park, fireworks, Shakespeare in the park, the best people watching, and, of course, the beach! With so much to see and do in downtown Ocean City, why not just stay where you play? Downtown offers a number of hotels and motels that range in style and rate to accommodate a full variety of needs. Take a vacation from your car, park it and Continued on page7

A new sign greets visitors as they enter Ocean City from Route 50.

What’s new in OC’s Downtown

Arriving to Ocean City via the Route 50 bridge, you can’t help but notice some large scale construction activity happening at the site of the long dormant Cropper concrete plant. This exciting new waterfront development includes an eight-and-a-half story hotel with 133 rooms, and a rooftop bar and restaurant. The new Cambria Hotel is set to open in the summer of 2019. Another highly visible project as you enter town is set to begin construction this summer on the corner of Baltimore Avenue and First Street. The building that previously occupied this space was declared uninhabitable by the Town of Ocean City and was razed in the spring of 2017. The new mixed-use project will include first floor retail, with at least 40 beds for employee housing on the second and third floors. In an effort to keep the Boardwalk safe and secure, the Town of Ocean City has installed security barriers at the multiple access points from the Inlet to 27th Street. This project consists of two phases: Phase I for summer 2018 includes installing temporary security measures (i.e. jersey barriers), Phase II for summer 2019 includes installing permanent security structures (i.e. attractive planters, etc.). Another sign of the times is the installation of cellular poles up and down the Boardwalk, as well as along the roads throughout the town.

New Pay by Plate Parking

Ocean City’s paid parking season runs from April 1 through Oct. 31 • Enter license plate number at a nearby pay station and make payment. • $3/hour at inlet lot, with 0-30 minutes free for all vehicles, camera enforced. • $2/hour at street and municipal lots with one hour free for handicapped parking. • Street and municipal lot violations will result in a $50 parking ticket. This ticket can be voided if payment is made at a pay station for expired time within one hour of receiving the ticket. • Inlet lot violations will result in a mailed bill of time spent in the lot at $3/hour, plus a $25 administrative fee. This fee will increase to $50 if not paid within 30 days. Patrons may pay for expired time for up to one hour and within one hour to avoid being billed for additional administrative costs. • Download the free Parkmobile App to pay for parking at the inlet lot, municipal lots, as well as street parking.

Museum’s new exhibit

The Ocean City Life-Saving Museum will be opening its newest exhibit in June. “Hook, Line and History: The Story of Commercial and Sport Fishing in Ocean City” will pay homage to the importance of fishing for the Town of Ocean City, from livelihood to tourism. The display will include photographs and artifacts, as well as two large aquariums with native aquatic wildlife. Don’t miss a visit to this Ocean City treasure, located at the Inlet end of the Boardwalk. Come enjoy the fun of downtown Ocean City!

Special events, public arts downtown Continued from page 1 forget about it! On your next trip downtown take note of the public art projects as well as the many buildings of historical significance. Plan to attend one of the many special events that are

hosted throughout the year. For more information, visit www.ocdc.org or call 410-289-7739. The Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) is a nonprofit organization charged with revitalizing downtown Ocean City.

Sunset Park’s free events make Thursdays special Sunset Park is a downtown Ocean City hidden gem. Located on the bay at S. Division Street and S. Philadelphia Avenue, the park sits at the original location of the railroad bridge that crossed the bay from West Ocean City. The storm of 1933 destroyed the bridge, but Sunset Park was designed to reflect railroad-style features — the bricks that line the perimeter are from the original train station. Featuring a lighted stage, restrooms, and a short pier that provides outstanding views of the bay, it’s no wonder Sunset Park is becoming increasingly popular as a venue for weddings and other special occasions. If you’re interested in renting the park, contact Tammie Beres with OC Recreation and Parks at 410-2500125. Sunset Park is home to a variety of special events throughout the year. Every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. throughout July and August, the Ocean City Development Corporation (OCDC) and the Town of Ocean City host the Sunset Park Party Nights concert series. These are free and family-friendly events that resort residentss and vis-

itors enjoy, at least in part because of the park’s amazing sunset backdrop. The Ocean City Recreation Boosters sell beverages, including beer and wine, at these weekly events, with proceeds going towards youth programs. Also on the schedule is the Ocean City Museum Society’s eighth annual Children’s Day on the Bay on Sunday, Aug. 5, from noon to 3 p.m. This is another free familyfriendly event that includes music, games, live animals and more. Brown Box Theatre takes the stage on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. with its production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” Admission is free. Shore Craft Beer and the OCDC will host the fourth annual Shore Craft Beer Fest on Saturday, Oct. 27. This has become an increasingly popular event, with several local breweries pouring their unique beers and local food trucks and vendors helping to make this a great day in the park. Sunset Park has something for everyone, so check out some of these special events this summer, or host your own. For more information, go to www.ocdc.org or www.ococean.com.

The OCDC Sunset Park Party Night is free and open to the public, beginning at 7 p.m. Sunset Park is located at S. Division St. and Philadelphia Ave. on the bay next to the U.S. Coast Guard Station. Note: Beverages, including beer and wine, to be sold by O.C. Rec Boosters at nine music events. All proceeds are used for youth programs is Ocean City. Attendees are recommended to bring their own chairs.

The Ocean City Life-Saving Museum Society, represented by Assistant Curator Christine Okerblom, center, was awarded The Downtown Event Award by the OCDC for its Children’s Day by the Bay Festival. Presenting the award during the OCDC’s annual meeting were OCDC Executive Director Glenn Irwin, left, and President Chris Trimper.

Awards, accomplishments highlight annual meeting On May 2, the Ocean City Development Corporation held its 18th annual meeting and awards ceremony at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub and Grille, Fourth Street and the Boardwalk. Chris Trimper, OCDC president, highlighted the projects and accomplishments of the past year. Several awards were presented to individuals, business owners, and organizations that help forward the OCDC mission of revitalizing downtown Ocean City. The OCDC Facade Program promotes traditional Ocean City architecture design standards that in turn help create a sense of community and place. Under the Facade Program, OCDC has provided assistance to a total of 200 properties in downtown Ocean City. These upgrades have resulted in over $6 million in private investment in downtown properties. The Green Building Program has provided financial assistance to 48 properties for the installation of energy efficient windows, doors and ‘cool’ roofs. Although the OCDC provides financial assistance for the façade improvements, approximately 85 percent of these projects were paid for by the property owners. The OCDC presented Façade Improvement Awards to the following recipients for their exterior improvements: Dylan Jones at 15 St. Louis Avenue; R.G. Roeder & Family at 601 Baltimore Avenue; and Spiro Buas at 7/9 N. Baltimore Avenue. The OCDC Business Assistance Program provides help to new businesses with fixed interior improve-

ments. This program encourages new business development in Downtown Ocean City. There were two Business Assistance Awards presented this year: South Pole Ice Cream Roll at 10 N. Division Street, and Ocean 13 bar/restaurant at 1301 Atlantic Avenue. The New Construction Award was presented to St. Paul’s By-The-Sea Protestant Episcopal Church at 302 N. Baltimore Avenue for the new addition that was recently completed after the fire that destroyed that part of the church in 2013. The Downtown Event Award was presented to the Children’s Day by the Bay Festival. This is a fun free family-oriented educational event held annually in August by the Ocean City Life-Saving Museum Society at Sunset Park. T.C. Studios, located at 1505 Philadelphia Avenue, received the OCDC Organizational Award for its help turning several utility boxes into attractive public art. Bill Neville, director, Planning and Community Development for the Town of Ocean City was presented with an award for his assistance to the OCDC and its revitalization efforts. Also honored were two departing members of the OCDC Board of Directors, Charlie Barrett and Chris Trimper (current OCDC president). Newly elected board members for 2018 are Igor Conev, Buddy Dykes, Patrick McLaughlin, Bill Sieg, Nick Tekmen and Bob Torrey. The OCDC Annual Meeting celebrates another successful year in revitalizing downtown Ocean City.
