Downtown Ocean City creates memories

Downtown is home to the quintessential old town Ocean City landmarks, places that every generation of your family remembers fondly, and looks forward to returning to year after year. And if this is your first visit, this is where you will capture an Ocean City memory that will bring you back for years to come. Whether it’s strolling on the boards, grabbing a bite at your favorite restaurant, riding your favorite ride or playing your favorite game, when temperatures drop low and stay there for what feels like eternity, these are the places you day dream about. It is fair to say that no trip to Ocean City is complete without spending time on our fabulous

Boardwalk and exploring the downtown area. There is something very special about sharing an experience that transcends generations! While there is no doubt that downtown OC is the link to past, with so many classic businesses that have been passed down from generation to generation, downtown has many new options as well. Spend some time exploring the Boardwalk businesses as well as those off the beaten path or bayside, you’ll find local favorites, or create new ones. Where else can you find a museum, fine jewelry, amusement rides and games, candy stores, fine dining, fast food, ice cream, donuts, popcorn, tshirt shops, surf gear, parasailing, boat trips, art

shops, bike rentals, jet skis, pier fishing, bay fishing, off-shore fishing, skate park, basketball courts, tennis courts, ball fields, live music, oceanfront bars, bayside bars, side street bars, happy hours, dinner cruises, pizza, public art, free concerts in the park, fireworks, Shakespeare in the park, the best people watching, and, of course, the beach! With so much to see and do in downtown Ocean City, why not just stay where you play? Downtown offers a number of hotels and motels that range in style and rate to accommodate a full variety of needs. Take a vacation from your car, park it and forget about it! Continued on page 10

If you’re planning to attend one of the special events at Sunset Park, as many visitors and residents do during the summer, it’s a good idea to bring your own seating.

Sunset Park is hidden gem in Ocean City’s downtown Located on the bay at South Division Street and South Philadelphia Avenue, the park sits at the original location of the railroad bridge that crossed the bay from West Ocean City. The storm of 1933 destroyed the bridge, but Sunset Park was designed to reflect railroad style features, the bricks that line the perimeter are from the original train station. Featuring a lighted stage, restrooms, and a short pier that provides outstanding views of the bay, it’s no wonder Sunset Park is becoming increasingly popular as a venue for weddings and other special occasions. If you’re interested in renting the park, contact Tammie Beres with OC Recreation and Parks at 410-2500125. Sunset Park is home to special events throughout the year. Every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. throughout July and August, the Ocean City Development Corporation and the Town of Ocean City present the Sun-

ay 1/2 D ing Fish a e S p e De

set Park Party Nights concert series. These are free and family-friendly events that resort residents and visitors enjoy, at least in part because of the park’s amazing sunset backdrop. The Ocean City Recreation Boosters sell beverages, including beer and wine, at these weekly events, with proceeds going towards youth programs. Brown Box Theatre takes the stage on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. with its production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.” Admission is free. Shore Craft Beer and the OCDC will be hosting the fourth annual Shore Craft Beer Fest on Saturday, Oct. 27. This has become an increasingly popular event, with several local breweries pouring their unique beers and local food trucks and vendors helping to make this a great day in the park. Sunset Park has something for everyone, so check out some of these special events this summer, or host your own.

Always something to do in downtown OC •

Continued from page 1 On your next trip downtown, take note of the public art projects as well as the many buildings of historical significance. Plan to attend one of the many special events that are hosted throughout the year.

There will be at least 15 breweries represented from Delmarva, as well as food trucks and live music by Johnny Bling band. This will be an afternoon of fun. The first three Shore Craft Beer Fests were a great success and this one is expected to be even bigger and better. Sunset Park is located at S. Division Street and the Bay, just south of the U.S. Coast Guard Station. This craft beer event is across the street from the southern terminus of the Ocean City bus transit center so attendees are encouraged to ride this bus. Explore Ocean City’s past with History Week events

The Ocean City mayor and council have proclaimed Oct. 13-20 “History Week,” during which the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum will offer a variety of events to celebrate the resort’s rich history. When proclaiming History Week, Mayor Rick Meehan stated how important the museum is in telling the story of Ocean City. It has been performing this service for 40 years. What better way to immerse yourself in the past than by visiting some of Ocean City’s oldest homes, hotels and other iconic sites. A historic house tour is planned for Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. An guide will be at each site. An example of the sites available for touring are An Inn on the Ocean B&B, the Walker Cottage, the George Bert Cropper House, and St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. "These structures offer a glimpse of an Ocean City that our mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers enjoyed over the years," said Vicki Barrett owner of An Inn on the Ocean. The tour is a fundraiser that will help strengthen and build the George and Suzanne Hurley Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is open to

Stephen Decatur High School graduates who plan on furthering their education at a local college. Daphne Hurley, daughter of George and Suzanne, is chairwoman of this event. Completing the week will be a 40th anniversary party — Surfin' the Seventies — at Fager’s Island on Oct. 20 from 1-3:30 p.m. The themed fundraiser will offer a 50/50 Raffle, barbecue-style food, beer, wine, and music by DJ Batman. “We expect that partygoers will celebrate and reminisce about the 1970s, a very seminal time for Ocean City,” said Curator Sandy Hurley. An Ocean City Spirit Award will be presented during the party. The Museum Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring and supporting the interpretation and appreciation of the cultural and natural history of Ocean City and the Worcester County coastal region. This society is responsible for funding many of the museum’s public programs and exhibits. Tickets for both events can be purchased at www.ocmuseum.org. Rules for the Spirit Award can be found on the website as well. For additional information and updates check out the museum’s Facebook page.

Brown Box Theatre Project presents free Shakespeare The Brown Box Theatre Project will transform Ocean City’s Sunset Park into the Forest of Arden on Sept. 9, for its eighth annual Free Outdoor Shakespeare tour of “As You Like It.” When a motley cast of characters find themselves banished from the court, misdirection, desire, and serendipity unite to form a tangled web of identity and love that could only be possible in the pastoral haven, where gender roles, politics, and expectations are turned upside down. Performed under the stars in outdoor venues, “As You Like It” will transport audiences into the heart of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies in a can’t-miss multi-state tour. Brown Box’s annual tradition will

continue the company’s mission of delivering professional theater directly to communities in an ongoing effort to transform the way theater is created and consumed. “As we expand our reach on Delmarva, Brown Box continues our efforts to be a regular and reliable source of professional performing arts to communities whose access to theater is limited by geography or cost,” Artistic Director Kyler Taustin said. The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. outdoors at Sunset Park (South Division Street and the bay) in downtown Ocean City. Feel free to bring a chair. For more information, including weather updates and other area performance dates, please visit www.brownboxtheatre.org.

Ocean City Today/Discover Downtown

September 2018

Resort’s downtown lights up for holidays Downtown Ocean City was once the hub of holiday festivities. Lights lined the area around the inlet and a drivethrough arch lit the way to Santa’s mailbox. But over the years, the holiday activities migrated to Northside Park. The WinterFest of Lights at the park is a wonderful addition to the holidays, but the Downtown Association, whose mission is to help ensure the continued success of the Ocean City area, believes that the festive atmosphere should flow throughout the city. The Town of Ocean City challenged the association to show there is an interest in holiday decorations among the residents and business and to help raise the funds to bring them back. DTA began its efforts in 2012 with the “Donate to Decorate” program. The Tower Tree at Sunset Park was the first purchase and it still greets visitors to the South end of Baltimore Avenue every holiday season. With the city’s help, supporters obtained 90 large lighted wreaths and distributed them free to be displayed by downtown businesses. In the past five years, thanks to donations from local businesses and organizations, several large light displays have been purchased. Holiday lights now appear at the foot of the Route 50 Bridge, along Baltimore and Philadelphia Avenues and on the west side of the inlet parking lot. The largest display was put in place this past year — the manger scene spanning the width of the Third Street Ball Field It was purchased with funds donated by the Harrison Family. The city installs, maintains and stores the displays, so the inventory and holiday spirit will continue to grow each year. Even so, the DTA has a long way to go to make Ocean City a true holiday destination. Kevin Gibbs, DTA vice-president, has formulated a plan to install holiday lights from the inlet north, eventually encompassing all areas of the city. The goal this year is to install five more displays along the west side of the inlet lot. The DTA continues to raise funds to restore the holiday lights and spirit in Ocean City through the Light Up OC campaign, the Trick or Tee Golf Tournament to be held Oct. 25 at Glen Riddle Golf Club and the Nov. 17 Winter Festival on the Boardwalk. To offer your support or for more information on the Light Up OC campaign or any of the fundraising events, visit ocdowntownassociation@verizon.net or call 410-289-1413.

Visitors to downtown Ocean City are warmly greeted by the scene above, while the manger display shown below is the largest in the downtown.
