We are delighted to offer another engaging season of first-class artistic and cultural experiences at The Grunin Center. The Center not only helps to promote the arts in Ocean County, it also makes Ocean County College a magnet for fine and performing arts patrons far and wide.

We are truly grateful for the generous donation from The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, which will benefit the Ocean County community for many years to come. We also appreciate wonderful patrons like you who inspire us to offer the best in fine and performing arts. A MESSAGE from the Grunins

Linda and I have been residents of Ocean County since 1969. We built our reputation as lawyers who worked hard, related to our clients’ needs and always sought to act with the highest integrity. Since 2013, we have devoted more and more of our attention to our philanthropic endeavors through the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation.

Part of our Foundation’s mission is to engage the Ocean and Monmouth County region with all forms of the Arts, covering a wide range of visual and performing endeavors. The Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts is aligned with that mission. From global artists to local arts students, including the New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival, the Center has elevated our community and brought people together from across the nation to celebrate performing and visual arts. The British Invasion Years

Saturday, September 16, 2017 TRIBUTE More than just The Beatles, The British Invasion Years is three shows in one! First, you’ll hear classic songs by iconic Sixties British groups. The Beatles took the first step by swinging the door open and turning the music world on its ear. As a result, American fans began to thirst for more British music. England answered the call by sending their very best – all of whom were eager to fill the Fab Four’s shoes. Then, the American musical “response” followed, with memorable hits by celebrated artists. Groups like The Beach Boys made you long to surf the waves, The Monkees made believers out of us and their TV show antics made us all laugh, and The Doors hypnotized fans with their unmistakable organ sound. This incredible musical trip back in time comes to a show stopping climax with music from the four lads who started it all: The Beatles! Neil Berg’s 101 Years of Broadway Friday, September 22, 2017 MUSICAL THEATRE 101 Years of Broadway is a sprawling revue of American musical treasures from Irving Berlin to Andrew Lloyd Webber, including dazzling tributes to Rodgers & Hart, Kander & Ebb, Lerner & Lowe, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, and Oscar Hammerstein. “101 Years of Broadway” recreates the biggest moments from the finest Broadway shows of the century featuring the actual stars of shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserablés, Evita, Wonderful Town, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Fiddler on the Roof. These amazing performers light up the stage with songs from the hit shows in which they starred. Storm Large

Sunday, October 1, 2017 POP/ROCK/R&B (NOTE: Show contains explicit lyrics. No admittance for children under 12.) Storm Large shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show “Rock Star: Supernova,” where she built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Large made her debut with the band Pink Martini in 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. In fall 2014, Storm released Le Bonheur, a record designed to capture her sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted… much like the lady herself. 7:30pm  Main Stage $35

With an upright piano anchored to the rock of the Canadian Shield, Roman Zavada created new piano compositions inspired by the aurora borealis of the Northwest Territories. Zavada then returned to the scene of his creation to capture with his video team the northern lights in 360 degrees and in real time. Acclaimed by critics and the public for its beauty and originality, this outstanding 360 degree piano performance immerses the audience above the 60th parallel deep into the heart of the northern spirit. Joan Osborne Sings the Songs of Bob Dylan

Saturday, October 14, 2017 SINGER-SONGWRITER Joan Osborne has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the great voices of her generation – both a commanding, passionate performer and a frank, emotionallyevocative songwriter. A multi-platinum selling recording artist and seven-time Grammy Award® nominee, the soulful vocalist is a highly sought-after collaborator and guest artist who has performed alongside many notables, including Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Luciano Pavarotti, Emmylou Harris, Taj Mahal, and Mavis Staples, to name a few. Her two residencies at Cafe Carlyle at The Carlyle Hotel in New York City (2016-2017), titled “Joan Osborne Sings The Songs of Bob Dylan” and “Joan Osborne Sings The Songs of Bob Dylan II,” received critical acclaim from outlets such as The New York Times, “At every point in the evening, you had a sense of Ms. Osborne as an artist who knew exactly what she was doing.” Osborne felt this would be a great chance to work out an idea she had of doing a “Songbook Series” of albums – the way Ella Fitzgerald did in recording the songs of Gershwin, Cole Porter, and others – but with the songs of more recent writers. Wednesday, October 25, 2017 MUSICAL THEATRE Combining timeless music with wit, charm, storytelling, and a dash of soft shoe and ukulele performances, Tony Danza is accompanied by his talented four-piece band for Standards and Stories. Danza performs a selection of his favorite standards from the Great American Songbook, as well as selections from the hit Broadway musical Honeymoon in Vegas (which he also starred in), while interweaving stories about his life and personal connection to the music. The Everly Brothers Experience Friday, October 27, 2017 TRIBUTE The Zmed Brothers bring a genuine and youthful Everly Brothers Experience to the stage. Zachary and Dylan celebrate the genetic intimacy so ever present in the harmonies created by Don and Phil. When the guitar became electric, The Everly Brothers bridged the gap between country and R&B, creating Rock ‘n’ Roll that had never been heard before. With countless hits and classics, The Everly Brothers inspired artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, The Kinks, and many groups that utilize the blend of two part harmony. Their career spanned three decades and they continue to influence artists around the world. 8:00pm  Main Stage $25

This is a soldier’s story. Stu Richel proudly served in the U.S. Army and, through much of 1969, was a combat photographer/writer with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam; it is that service, which provides the impetus for this solo performance. No blood and guts. No political statements. Lots of humor … and pathos. Just one guy’s intensely personal perspective. Richel shares memories, photos, reflections, all related directly or indirectly to his service in Vietnam … the odd path by which he got there, what he did there, how that service has affected his life. His journey, if you will. His words are made even more vivid with video projections, some from his Vietnam Tour. BLUEGRASS Originally from the coal mining district of Dickinson County, VA and

then Danville, VA, The Church Sisters’ mesmerizing music chronicles their childhood with a haunting sound and Bluegrass twist. Their roots extend through Bluegrass and Gospel, performing alongside legendary acts from a young age. The duo is featured on Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited, which was co-produced by Grammy® Award-winner and mentor, Carl Jackson. The Church Sisters delivered with “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” one of the tracks on the two-disc project that also features legendary artists Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. They recently released a moving cover of Lukas Graham’s megahit “7 Years.” 7:30pm  Main Stage $20

Candid Camera’s 8 Decades of Smiles! With Peter Funt has pleased audiences nationwide. Funt’s hilarious stage comedy is blended with clips, quips, and behindthe-scenes tales from the show’s funniest moments. The stage show incorporates the best “Candid Camera” clips in a fastpaced, laugh-filled romp through the decades. Funt’s topical humor is blended with audience participation and special surprises to make the show a great night of fun. “Candid Camera” holds a unique place in entertainment history as the only show to have produced new episodes in each of the last eight decades – from father Allen Funt’s debut in 1948 through son Peter’s recent run on TV Land. Funt joined his dad as co-host in the 1980s and took over as host in the ’90s. Over his own four decades, Funt has hosted more than 200 network episodes. Preservation Hall and Columbia Artists Present: Irma Thomas, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and The Preservation Legacy Quintet Tuesday, November 7, 2017 JAZZ

If the French Quarter is the musical heart of New Orleans, then Preservation Hall is its heartbeat. Take a group of long-time performers from the venerable concert hall, The Preservation Legacy Quintet, combine them with the Crescent City’s “Soul Queen” Irma Thomas, throw in the spiritual authority of The Blind Boys of Alabama, and you get a very special evening of music that showcases “The Heart and Soul Queen of New Orleans.” Touring together for the first time, this unique trip will treat audiences to a special evening filled with musical collaborations and traditional standards. As part of New Orleans’ musical royalty, Irma Thomas is a Grammy Award®winning singer with her own rich musical history. Her soul-drenched voice can be heard on the Allen Toussaint-produced track “It’s Raining,” which was featured in the Jim Jarmusch’s cult classic, Down By Law; in 2007, she was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame; and in 2008, she was featured on the poster of the world-famous New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. Since the original members first sang together as kids in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world. In 2005, they released Down in New Orleans, a Grammy Award®-winner for “Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.” The Preservation Hall Legacy Quintet represents a tradition that started in 1961 when Preservation Hall first opened in the French Quarter. Arlo Guthrie Re:Generation Tour Thursday, November 9, 2017 SINGER-SONGWRITER The father of the American protest song, Woody Guthrie hoped one day to have enough kids to form a family band to travel the country and sing songs to the people. The Re:Generation Tour realizes Woody’s dream through the inspiring work of Arlo Guthrie and his children Sarah Lee Guthrie and Abe Guthrie. Woody built a legacy of activism that the Guthrie family continues to preserve with their leading voices in the current revolution against oppression and injustice. The Re:Generation Tour gives voice to the common folk with their characteristic honesty and humor through the power of community and song. Arlo and family aspire to represent hope for working families across this great nation. In 1967 at the age of 19, Arlo took up the torch from his father Woody when his antiwar classic “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” became an international hit. He’s been on the road ever since, with his son Abe joining his band in the ‘80s as the musical director and keyboardist. Sarah Lee, a singer-songwriter with a lauded career in her own right, has been releasing celebrated original music for two decades. 7:30pm  Main Stage $59 - $50

Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone Saturday, November 25, 2017 POP/ROCK/R&B At the age of fifteen, Peter Noone achieved international fame as “Herman,” lead singer of the legendary pop band Herman’s Hermits. His classic hits include: “I’m into Something Good,” “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter,” “I’m Henry VIII, I Am,” “A Must to Avoid,” “Listen People,” “No Milk Today,” “The End of the World,” “Leaning on a Lamp Post,” and “Dandy.” Ultimately, Herman’s Hermits sold over 52 million recordings. In all, 14 singles and seven albums went gold. Accompanied by his band, Herman’s Hermits, Noone currently performs over 200 concerts a year. There is no doubt that Noone’s extraordinary talent, disarming wit, handsome features, and compelling stage presence will continue to delight fans of all ages, for a long, long time to come. 2:00pm & 8:00pm  Main Stage $43 - $39

Ana Gasteyer – Holiday Tipple Friday, December 8, 2017 HOLIDAY With her joyful sass and pizzazz, singer, actress, and comedienne Ana Gasteyer hosts a good old-fashioned holiday party, as a follow up to her hugely popular cabaret show “I’m Hip!” Best known for her incomparable work on “Saturday Night Live,” Gasteyer can currently be seen starring in Netflix’s critically-acclaimed comedy series, “Lady Dynamite,” the TBS show “People of Earth,” as well as the ABC hit series “The Goldbergs.” On Broadway, she starred in the hit show Wicked as “Elphaba,” as well as the acclaimed Encores! Off-Center productions of A New Brain, Three Penny Opera, and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Her jazzy ensemble will fete the season with swingin’ holiday favorites, belty baubles, and novelty Yuletide tunes of yore. Vienna Boys Choir

Thursday, December 14, 2017 CLASSICAL Renowned as one of the finest vocal ensembles in the world for over five centuries, the Vienna Boys Choir is a frequent visitor to North America, performing throughout the country in everything from houses of worship to great concert venues like New York’s Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Hall. This illustrious group of child musicians has been delighting music lovers across the globe for six centuries with their purity of tone, distinctive charm, and popular repertoire. “Christmas in Vienna” showcases these gifted musicians with voices of unforgettable beauty in an extraordinary program featuring Austrian folk songs, classical masterpieces, popular songs, and, of course, holiday favorites. 7:30pm  Main Stage $49 - $40

Westminster Concert Bell Choir Friday, December 15, 2017 CLASSICAL

A new Grunin Center tradition, the Westminster Concert Bell Choir returns to the Grunin Center stage! The group is composed of undergraduate and graduate students of Westminster Choir College of Rider University, conducted by Kathleen Ebling Shaw. Celebrating the 39th year of the hand bell curriculum, Westminster Choir College was the first institution in the world to develop such a program. The Choir has performed twice at Carnegie Hall during the Christmas season and was featured on New Jersey Network’s “State of the Arts” program. 8:00pm  Main Stage $20

Frozen Sing Along Saturday, December 16, 2017 FAMILY Join us and sing along with your favorite songs as you watch the animated film that shattered box office records! A Garfield Christmas

Thursday, December 21, 2017 FAMILY It’s the most wonderful time of the year – especially if you’re the world’s best-loved and funniest cat: Garfield! Coming to you with arms wide open in anticipation of all the Christmas presents he’s expecting, Garfield will light up your holiday this year with his wit, wise cracks, and wisdom. Everyone’s favorite feline is a few gifts short of true Christmas spirit. But with the help of Jon, Odie, the audience, and his new holiday friends, Garfield gets an “enlightening” lesson. SINGER-SONGWRITER Rising from a milieu of lovelorn singer-songwriters, John Gorka illuminates instead with his trademark wordplay, twisting and trying words and phrases, in a way a balloon artist creates complex creatures from simple balloons. Few contemporary songwriters coax language a deftly as Gorka. For over two decades, Gorka’s keen ear has picked up the stories of those along his path, folding them into poetry and song. As the lyric from her song “Shotgun” implies, singer-songwriter Amilia K. Spicer has a thing for wide-open spaces and mystical places. Even her record label name, Free Range Records, reflects her vagabond spirit, which has carried her from the green hills of her native Pennsylvania, through the hill country of central Texas, to the mountain monasteries of Tibet. Interwoven texts, music and voices bring Rutter’s Mass of the Children to life. The Garden State Philharmonic Youth Orchestras Program (GSPYO)

The GSPYO provides young musicians with the opportunity to play in an orchestra and receive training to develop and enhance individual musicianship. The three ensembles work together as feeder programs allowing students to build on their knowledge and advance. The members come from various schools throughout the Jersey Shore. The three youth orchestras typically perform two large concerts, one in late winter and one in June, as well as performing throughout the year at a variety of venues in the area.
