School Programming • 2017-2018 Join us for a great season of performances that will educate, entertain, and enrich your students’ lives as they learn about science, storytelling, music, and culture! These performances support classroom curriculum and the invaluable skills that arts education gives children. Through the performances here at the Grunin Center and the related teacher curriculum for you to use in your classroom, we aim to encourage students to read, develop critical and creative thinking, and be curious about the world around them.
TICKET COSTS
A Special Incentive! Book your students’ trip by June 30, 2017 and receive a special rate of $5 per person (purchase order received by Oct. 6). For bookings received from July 1, 2017 to 30 days prior to the performance, tickets are just $7 per student (purchase order received within 30 days of booking). One month prior to each show, any available tickets will be sold for $9 per person. One chaperone is admitted free for every ten students. The Grunin Center for the Arts is located on the Ocean County College campus in Toms River, New Jersey. Janet’s Planet: Tour of the Solar System Thursday, January 18, 2018 9:30 am & 11:00 am “A Tour Through the Solar System” travels at the “speed of thought,” introducing the wonders of the galaxy to families and young audiences throughout the country. Janet’s Planet is shown on 144 public television stations nationwide, and fans are in for a real treat as they are given a virtual tour around the solar system from Janet’s futuristic Mission Control. The 45-minute interactive presentation engages and challenges students and is designed to inspire STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) potential in elementary school-age kids. Lesson plans are designed to integrate with Next Generation Science Standards, based on a curriculum endorsed by NASA and Space Florida. Janet’s Planet meets Common Core Standards. Black String Thursday, January 25, 2018 11:00 am New sounds from the ancient instruments of Korea: Black String create a unique musical language drawing on Korean traditional music, jazz, and free improvisation. This program introduces students to world cultures, diversity, and global awareness. Founded in 2011 through a Korea-UK cultural exchange program called “UK Connection,” Black String have performed their “extraordinary, enigmatic music that wells up from silence and grasps the senses” at festivals throughout Asia and the UK. Black String’s motto is “Borderless contemporary music from Korea.” Students will experience jazz music played with electric guitars and Korean instruments such as the geomungo, daegeum, yanggeum, ajaeng, and janggu, and Black String will offer an experience that broadens the appreciation of the world music audience by presenting an ancient tradition within a modern setting. Las Cafeteras Tuesday, January 30, 2018 10:00 am & 11:30 am Las Cafeteras is a Chicano band from East Los Angeles, California. Their music fuses spoken word and folk music with traditional Son Jarocho, AfroMexican music, and zapateado dancing. Las Cafeteras add Afro-Caribbean marimbol and cajón, poetry in English and Spanglish, and instruments like jarana, requinto, a donkey jawbone, and a wooden platform called the tarima. Their Afro-Mexican rhythms, dance, and inspiring lyrics tell stories of a community in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East LA sound and a community-focused political message in a program that introduces students to world cultures and themes of diversity and global awareness. Pirate School: The Science of Pirates! Wednesday, February 7, 2018 9:30 am & 11:00 am Pirate School excites and motivates students grades K-5 with piratical fun while introducing simple concepts outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards. Historically, seafarers have pushed science and technology forward – and who better to captivate and expand children’s horizons than the swaggering staff of Pirate School?! Topics covered include atmospheric pressure, wind and currents, aerodynamics of a sailboat (Science), simple machines (Engineering), navigation (Math), and of course, the flight of a cannonball (Technology). Kuniko Yamamoto, Storyteller Monday, March 19, 2018 10:00 am & 11:30 am Kuniko Yamamoto tells Japanese stories and folk tales using music, masks, and mime in a program that explores themes of diversity and global awareness. Charming folktales are combined with traditional musical instruments, magical masks, origami (the art of paper folding), and mime to create storytelling that will have audience spellbound in their seats. Neil Berg (Audition Workshop)

Suitable for Length: 90 minutes Middle, High School, & College Students Award-winning Off-Broadway musical composer and lyricist Neil Berg returns to the Grunin Center to lead an audition workshop and Q and A with middle school, high school, and college students. Ailey II (Dance Workshop)

Suitable for Length: 90 minutes High School & College Students Celebrated dance organization Ailey II is returning to the Grunin Center to work with students. Universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers, they will work with high school and college students for a 90 minute dance workshop.
Church Sisters (Vocal Workshop)
Thursday, November 2, 2017 No cost. First come first served – please 2:00 pm call to register your group. Suitable for Length: 90 minutes Middle, High School, & College Students Originally from the coal mining district of Dickinson County, VA, The Church Sisters’ mesmerizing music chronicles their childhood with a haunting sound and bluegrass twist. Their roots extend through Bluegrass and Gospel, and in this vocal harmony workshop for middle school, high school, and college students they will explore how they get their tight harmonies and work in sync with one another. 8
