MUSIC/CULTURE

The Pushcart Players offer a spirited salute to America in song, dance and story. This uplifting production takes a loving look at a small group of immigrants who came to this country in 1903 seeking freedom, opportunity and a better life for themselves, their children and their children’s children. The immigrant characters provide a symbolic representation of the many émigrés from a multitude of nations that have reached our shores over the years. Prevailing themes throughout the presentation are the immigrant experience, ethnic diversity, and the precious legacy of freedom and democracy in America. 10:00am & 11:30am  For Grades K-6 Main Stage  Free

From the South Carolina Lowcountry, where life is laced with African ways, comes Ranky Tanky, a quintet with music rooted in a culture that has shaped American art, food, language and attitude. That culture, its people and their mother tongue is called Gullah. The soulful songs of the Gullah culture are brought to life by this band of native South Carolinians who mix the low country traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B. “Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit this Charleston, SC based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts, from heartbreaking spirituals to delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston, SC are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown. 10:00am (6th-10th grades)  11:30am (3rd-5th grades) Main Stage  Free

This engagement of San Jose Taiko is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Unknown to most, taiko is the Japanese word for drums of any origin. In North America, the term has evolved to refer to the young art form of kumidaiko (ensemble drumming featuring the Japanese drum). This art form began in Japan in the late 1950s and came to the US in the late 1960s. SJT is recognized as a pioneer in contemporary taiko and have been instrumental to the growth of the art form, helping to nurture an ecosystem that now supports more than 500 groups spread throughout North America. Our school outreach program seeks to celebrate America’s cultural diversity by sharing the art of taiko through performance and educational programs.  10:00am (Elementary)  1:00pm (High School & College)  Students with hearing impairments are encouraged to attend either performance  Main Stage/Student Center  Free
