Paramedic Education Program The Paramedic provides advanced life-saving emergency care to the acutely ill or injured patient. Any qualified EMT that is interested in becoming a Paramedic in New Jersey must attend an accredited Paramedic Education Program for approximately 2 years. The Paramedic Education Program is taught by a diverse faculty of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, allied health providers, and paramedics. They facilitate paramedic education according to the National EMS Standards for the Paramedic. Our program goals include educational settings that target the development of the paramedic student’s cognitive, psychomotor, and affective abilities necessary to care for a patient in need of advanced life support care. The didactic (classroom) component is a comprehensive 389 hour program which includes patient assessment, intravenous therapy, medication administration, advanced airway management, rhythm interpretation, defibrillation, and the differential diagnosis of medical emergencies. In addition, the curriculum also includes certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) which affords the graduate entry-level opportunities. The clinical internship provides the paramedic student with patient care experiences in the Emergency Department, Respiratory Therapy, Critical and Surgical Care Units, Pediatric Units, Labor and Delivery Units, Behavioral Health Unit, Cardiac Catherization Lab, and the Operating Room for a minimum of 336 hours at various hospital locations in Central and North Jersey. The Paramedic student must also complete a field internship on an approved Paramedic unit for a minimum 440 hours with two Paramedics. Students must successfully complete didactic, clinical, and field components of the Paramedic Education Program to be eligible to test for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Paramedic written and skills board exams. The Paramedic Education Program is approved by the New Jersey State Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This program runs approximately 24 months from the commencement of didactic to the completion of all required internship hours. Upon successful completion of the didactic portion of the program, students will be awarded 40 CEUs for recertification of their EMT cards while enrolled as a paramedic student.
