This is the story of a poor Southern tobacco farmer whose cells were taken without her knowledge to become one of the most important tools in medicine. These first “immortal” human cells that were grown in culture are still alive today although the ‘donor’ has been dead more than sixty years. The cells were vital to finding a polio vaccine, cancer research, in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping. Although the cells are bought and sold by the billions, Henrietta lies in an unmarked grave. Her husband and children were also used without informed consent. Their story is interwoven with the dark history of experimentation of African Americans, the birth of bioethics and legal battles for the ‘stuff we are made of’.
