POLICE APPEAL FOR DRIVER POLICE have released an image of a man they’d like to speak to in relation to an incident where a young girl was approached near the Riverview Caravan Park on Monday last week..

The man is thought to be between 50 and 70 and was driving a red station wagon.

Car hits tree in Wallington

SES and firefighters worked for more than half an hour to free a man trapped in his car on the Wallington Road.

The single vehicle accident happened on a straight stretch of the road at about 11.30am. The rescue was made particularly difficult because the car was virtually embedded in the base of a tea tree and resting at an angle.

The man in his 40s was taken to hospital with chest and facial injuries.

THE final indoor winter market takes place on Sunday September 4 at the Bellarine Aquatic Centre from 9.30am to 2pm. After that the market reverts to its summer location at Kingston Park on Sunday October 2. The markets are organised

by Rotary and include a gold coin donation for local organisations.

Grover amid the city riots OCEAN Grovers have described their shock of witnessing the recent London riots.

24 year old Gemma Considine and 19 year old Darcy Warne are both living in London and described the chaos around the city.

Gemma grew up in Ocean Grove and has been living in South West London since 2010.

Gemma said she wasn’t too concerned by first reports of rioters in North London, as they were on the other side of the city from where she and boyfriend Alex were living. “I was a bit shocked that it was going on, but it still felt as though it could be any city in the world,� she said.

Gemma said she hasn’t been part of the clean up project but a lot

of fundraising is now happening to help out the small businesses that were affected by damage or closure. “I would like to donate money to the small businesses who were affected by the riots they are the people I feel sorry for,� she said,

MORE than $6,775 was raised when a dozen musicians and bands clubbed together on Friday night for the MS fundraiser.

The second annual MS fundraiser is putting cash towards a new Karingal respite centre at Leopold.

Co-organiser Kevin Downey said the result of the event at the Ocean Grove Hotel was “fantastic”.

“That’s about $2,000 more than last year, it was a great result. We are really, really pleased with it. I’m sure Karingal will be as well.”

More than a dozen bands and individual acts gave their time for the event was well as local businesses that donated goods for an auction.

Kevin said: “The highlights of the night were Anthony George on guitar, he was absolutely sensational on acoustic

guitar – man can he play.

Moonah from Torquay, and Guthrie Pastiche brought the whole thing home magnificently.

“I’ll mention Brad ‘Lukey’ Luke too. He crawled off his deathbed to come and play. He was actually really sick, full of the flu and still came along which was fantastic.

It’s an indication of the vibe of the evening.

“There was a heap of volunteer involvement, on the night and in the weeks leading up to it.

I would like to offer a personal ‘thank you’ from all of the organising committee to all of the volunteers who gave their time.”

The Sunset Dukes, supporting Chris Wilson at the Chicken Shop, also managed to raise several hundred dollars with their own collection among the audience on Friday night.

OCEAN Grovers are still receiving scam phone calls from people posing as Microsoft employees.

During the past year locals have been phoned by international scammers who trick them into believing their computer has a virus and are then charged to have it removed (Watch out for Scams, Ocean Grove Voice, August 10, 2011).

Roger and Coral Berry said

they received five phone calls in one week from the scammers.

“Despite telling them twice that our son is a systems engineer and we knew it was a scam, the calls persisted,” she said.

Coral said they reported the phone calls to the Do Not Call register which forwarded the complaint to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, however without

Scammers still persisting enough information about the callers, they were unable to pursue it further.

The Berry’s took matters into their own hands when the scammers called again for the fifth time.

“When the fifth call came I (told them) that the Australian Federal Police were monitoring our phone,” Coral said.

“The silence on the other end of the phone was deafening

(and) we have not received another call since.”

Roger said they were concerned about the calls and wanted to warn the community not to fall for the scam.

“People need to be told these things as people more vulnerable than us might fall for it,” he said.

“We’re pensioners, we can’t afford to be ripped off,” he said.

Coral said they wanted to inform people who may receive one of these scam calls that Microsoft do not call people at random.

“It is useful to know that Microsoft do not cold call customers. According to information received, Do Not Call will only stop unwanted calls in Australia and most of the scammers are in either India or Pakistan,” she said.

Workers save their near dying boss THE quick-thinking actions of several apprentices saved the life of a plumber.

Dennis Sanders has returned to work for the first time since suffering a heart attack that almost killed him.

The 63-year-old Ocean Grove plumber was working on the roof of a double storey Geelong home in June when he went into cardiac arrest.

Sean Phelan, Billy Campbell, Chris Royle, Daniel Sharp and Jacob Fahey immediately performed CPR on Dennis while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

“I have no memory of it whatsoever other than what I’ve been told by the boys involved and other people,” Dennis said. “If the boys had not had the common sense, I probably wouldn’t be here.”

Twenty-two-year-old Sean played down his role in the rescue.

“I was just talking on the phone to the ambos and giving instructions, Chris and Jake were the ones doing compressions,” he said.

“Chris kept us calm, we were starting to panic but he was really good.”

When the ambulance arrived, paramedics were faced with the task of getting Dennis off the metal roof while he was unconscious. A wooden board had to be placed beneath Dennis so a defibrillator could be used to revive him, and the CFA had to bring in a cherry picker to bring him down.

Dennis spent the following five days in an induced coma before having

open heart surgery and recovering in Geelong Hospital for about 20 days.

“One of the biggest things is the stress and strain it puts on your partner – most of the time the patient is either unconscious or being cared for by staff at hospital,” he said.

The near-death experience has caused Dennis to reassess his life. “It does make you think and have second thoughts about life in general, we’re not infallible,” he said.

“You start thinking about slowing down, I’ve never wanted to retire

and still don’t want to retire, but you reassess the situation; I won’t be on to the tools as much.”

Dennis said despite being reasonably fit for his age, he did ignore what he now sees as heart attack warning signs about a week before the incident.

“In hindsight I think I did have warnings which I didn’t associate with cardiac arrest; tightness across the chest which I associated with muscle soreness, and reflux,” he said. “One of the main things I have learnt out of this is if there is any doubt whatsoever, call

an ambulance, I was told they would rather come out and have a false alarm than take you to hospital.”

Dennis will now continue his rehabilitation in Ocean Grove and take on a less physical role in his company, Denistan Plumbing Services, which Dennis’ son has kept running in his absence.

“The sooner I can get back to organising and supervising to help him, the better,” he said. “And by the way it will be the last roof I’ll be doing.”

CFA helping club get safety right MEMBERS of Grove Fire Brigade recently assisted Club Grove with the Fire and Evacuation part of their staff training day.

The brigade undertook Fire Extinguisher training that included a detailed presentation, video footage of extinguishers being used and practical training in the correct use of fire extinguishers utilising the CFA District 7 Extinguisher Training Trailer.

Members of Club Grove staff took the opportunity to use extinguishers on real fires under

the supervision and guidance of Ocean Grove Members Lieutenant Matt Geerings, and Firefighters Noel Grant and Lee Bickley.

“We have always received excellent support from Club Grove and we welcome the opportunity to assist them with their training” Matt said “Using an extinguisher is something that we hope no one has to do, but by providing this kind of practical experience, we hope that the Staff will have more confidence should the need arise” FIRE TRAINING: CFA members assisting Club Grove staff.

I WOULD like to add my voice to Steve Draper’s and Barton van Laar’s for the urgent need to do a bike lane along Thacker Street.

I have narrowly escaped being thrown off my bike by a school bus as there is simply not room for a bus and bike travelling east along that road.

We really need a bike lane

ride our bikes.

We try to ride to school and kinder weather permitting, however this is not a safe exercise.

We ride on the wrong side of the road (as we think this is safer) and that wonderful feeling of freedom on our bikes is negated by my constant instruction.

I support a wider shoulder on the left hand road side.

There is plenty of room and maybe then we wouldn’t have to

contribute to the cost of a footpath as proposed in 2010.

THIS week has been pretty hectic on Planet Cheeky. First up we were swooped by plovers whilst we were walking around Emperor Drive, not once but twice. The plovers came in swooping and screeching, I didn’t know what was happening. We changed our walking route, and came across even more swooping plovers. I might have to start wearing a helmet.

Then I opened my email to see what cool dog had sent in a photo for my column, and I get an email from a cat! Here is the feline email.

the prospect of paying to have the road fixed. I believe this is the council’s responsibility. I also believe that our street is used as a speedway for hoons and needs to have a reduced speed limit. Thacker Street I think is one of the only main residential roads in Ocean Grove to not have a 50km zone at least in part of the road. Turning into my driveway is sometimes very hazardous due to speeding tailgaters.

IF THERE was ever a reason to name a bridge there would be no better reason to name it after a local champion.

I cannot understand why local residents could possibly oppose this great idea in acknowledging the massive achievement of Cadel Evans.

An avid cyclist myself, I have just returned from riding in France across the Alps and I have a greater appreciation of what he has achieved knowing how tough those mountains are.

I totally support the Bike Safe cause and I agree that more funds need to be allocated to improving the safety for cyclists on our roads.

However, naming a road after Cadel shouldn’t have anything to do with helping to improving the safety on our roads - it should be happening anyway.

The bridge is an iconic landmark and I, like many others believe it should be named after an iconic Australian hero.

ALL people and visitors to the area could enjoy and remember Cadel’s great win when they walk, drive or cycle across the bridge rather than looking for a street sign somewhere or on a GPS. ANDREW HUMPHRIS Barwon Heads

KINDER EXTENSION It’s great to see that work has started on the extension of the Ocean Grove and District Preschool.

As the Member for Bellarine, I was pleased to be able to work to achieve the $200,000 in funding for upgrading the school and the $1 million for the construction of the Integrated Children’s Centre in Ocean Grove.

KIDS PROGRAM The Kids – Go for Your Life program was a fantastic initiative that worked in primary schools teaching young people about healthy eating and physical activity.

We are all aware about the risk of obesity and lifestyle diseases that can affect our children.

This program worked to educate young people and start healthy habits

for life. It has had many successes and I remember participating and seeing many of the great programs at work.

The new State government has cut this program and participating Bellarine schools including Surfside Primary School, Ocean Grove Primary School, Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School and Wallington Primary

School will no longer be able to offer the activities associated with program.

I am pushing to see this program re-instated.

LANDCARE FUNDING This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Landcare movement in Victoria.

Bellarine Landcare is a strong and active

group which has made a wonderful contribution in caring for our natural environment.

To mark the anniversary grants are being made available.

OCEAN Grove will have access to a Bellarine- based taxi service from September, writes Carly Helweg.

Bellarine Peninsula taxi operators are leaving the Geelong Taxi Network to establish a local independent service aimed at providing a higher level of service to the local area.

Ocean Grove driver Ron Fleming said the drivers were excited about being part of the new taxi group.

“It will breathe new life into the Bellarine drivers because we are hopeful of doing a better job,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to establishing our own identity on the Bellarine.”

Ron said they were looking forward to having the freedom to attend call outs to their regular customers, who in the past were required to call through a dispatch centre.

“That will make the older generation very, very happy in the knowledge and comfort that their regular driver will bring them in and back,” he said.

Bellarine Peninsula Taxis has accreditation from the Victorian Taxi Directorate and will start independent operations on Monday, September 19.

Ron said he and the other drivers would use their knowledge of the Bellarine to enhance their customers’ taxi experience.

“We know the community, we know where places in the community are, and that’s got to do wonders to tourism over the summer months,” he said.

The next trip for our youth program has been finalised with 40 young people leaving the cold of Melbourne and heading off to the Gold Coast for 4 days. The camps give our youth workers the extra time to work with young people within a fun environment. Along with our youth workers two local police officers attend the camp. This provides opportunities for young people to get to know their local police and for local police to understand issues facing young people on the Bellarine. I would like to thank all of our funding bodies who support this camp.

The Melbourne Newsboy Foundation, Ocean Grove Community Enterprise, City of Greater Geelong, Department of Human Services. The life skills and experiences gained from this camp are invaluable to the teenagers that attend.

Don’t forget that drop in is on every Friday night during the school term from 6pm to 9pm.

Trivia Arvo: Liam and Gemma, two adventurous young people from our Drop In program are embarking on a World Challenge

Trip to India in November where they will help build an orphanage to assist other young people. Fundraising-Disapointing News: Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre prides itself on taking part in fundraising to raise money for worthy causes and with the communities help we are often very successful in doing so. We are extremely disappointed that our latest fundraising efforts (for Daffodil Day) have come to a halt as the merchandise box and proceeds to date were stolen from the reception desk on Wednesday 27th July. This matter has been reported to the police. We ask the community to keep an eye out for anyone selling Daffodil Day merchandise unsolicited and please report to the police if you have any details.

Friendships and fun on the cards THE Ocean Grove Senior Citizens Centre is always on the lookout for new members to join the next game of cards.

The club has added new activities to its Wednesday and Thursday social calendar which includes table tennis, darts and board games.

Ten of the club’s women sat down to a game of 500 last week, a cup of tea and a catch up on the weekly gossip.

An open day will be held at the club’s meeting hall at 101 The Terrace on Tuesday, October 4, for current

members and anyone interested in joining.

There will be a Beyond Maturity Blues session at 10:30am aimed at helping with the mental challenges of growing old, as well as a sausage sizzle lunch and afternoon club activities.

Members pay a yearly fee of $15 and are encouraged to attend monthly committee meetings. For details 5255 2996.

A MINOR book celebration took place in the high street on Saturday.

As part of National Bookshop Day, wellknown authors Chris Womersley and Sally Learey were in town signing books and meeting local folk.

Sally is the author of children’s books Corio Bay Kingdom and Louttit Bay Treasure, some of which is set against local backdrops.

The idea of the Bookshop Day was to promote the message that bookshops are an important way of life, despite the recent plight of some of the large multinational chains.

day in the life – john o’halloran

Happy to share our paradise I COMPLETED my schooling in Wangaratta and then completed a law commerce degree at Melbourne University. I had been working as a lawyer in Melbourne for two years before I moved with my wife to Ocean Grove in 1983.

Our four children were all lucky to grow up in Ocean Grove. I remember buying our house for $49,000 and at the time a block of land was about $10,000. I set up legal practice working from our home on The Terrace. At the time Ocean Grove did not have any shops facing the car park and the entire focus was The Terrace shopping strip. Some of the shops at the time which no longer exist were a Lebanese restaurant, a launderette, a French restaurant, a television repair shop, a whitegoods repair shop and Capital Building Society.

I have seen many shops come and go but some have lasted the long haul. I admire anyone who has the drive to run their own business and front up smiling each day.

I played football for Ocean Grove and

coached the under 18 team. More recently I have coached Barwon Heads under 16 and under 18 football teams and Barwon Heads netball. I love the spectacle of football and will watch it at any level. I have been on various committees including football clubs and school boards.

Most of my community involvement has been in active activities including coaching football and netball. I played mixed netball at the Ocean Grove Surfside centre for a long time and really like the sport.

After working as a lawyer for 25 years, I completed a fitness course in 2007. Since then my work environment has been fitness based. A typical day for me is to conduct a 6.15am group exercise class on the beach, 7.30am run a personal training session at Kardinia Park in Geelong, 9am teach sport law and event management at the Gordon TAFE in Geelong, 11am deliver an exercise and quiz session at The Homestead Aged Care Hostel in Wallington, 1pm health retreat group exercise class on the beach,

rest of the afternoon free followed by 5.30pm group exercise class on the beach.

I can see Ocean Grove continuing to grow exponentially because it is such a lovely place to live. My favourite parts of Ocean Grove are the beach tracks because each one is different and delivers a different

vista when you emerge on to the beach. My favourite shop is the library because of the huge array of services offered.

If I was mayor of Ocean Grove I would create a holiday exchange bank which allowed a discount on council rates in return for offering your property for a

week to others to come and enjoy the beach when you are away. Holiday rentals can be prohibitive and I think it would be a way of sharing our little bit of paradise. If I wasn’t living in Ocean Grove I would be backpacking the world with my wife Ali.

Visitors lend a hand GEELONG students spent time on the Ocean Grove foreshore helping rejuvenate the coastline’s sand dunes.

As part of the Sand Dune Rehabilitation program, Geelong East Primary School’s students helped rehabilitate a small eroded area at 11W while learning about the sand dune habitat and proper beach water safety.

The program is organised by Fisheries Victoria, through Queenscliff’s Marine Discovery Centre in conjunction with Surfing Victoria.

Fisheries Victoria’s Marine Discovery Centre Education Officer Anne McLaughlin said it had always been a satisfying program for everyone involved.

“Not only is it a great day out of the classroom, students are taking positive steps to help rehabilitate a small area while learning about the sand dune habitat,” she said.

“At the end of a day’s hard work all participants can measure their efforts because they can see the difference they have made.”

Surfing Victoria’s indigenous officer Gordon Black spoke to the students about past indigenous use of the area and helped promote water safety through the Play it Safe by the Water initiative.

“This program is a great way to educate students on the history and culture of the region while learning how to stay safe in a marine environment,” he said.

Students showcase talents at youth music and arts festival LOCAL students pulled out their instruments and warmed their vocal cords for this year’s Geelong Schools Music and Movement Festival.

Ocean Grove and Surfside primary schools performed in the 65th annual festival at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre along with more than 30 other schools.

Surfside primary’s rock band, made up of students in grades three to six, rocked out to the classics Louie Louie and

Road House Blues.

Bass player Zeke Kemp said he was only a little bit nervous before getting on stage.

“It was a bit scary because I only started playing this year but when you get up there it’s pretty easy,” he said.

Ocean Grove Primary School’s choir sang Stop and People Get Ready before the ukulele band, headed by local musician Sarah Carroll, performed Don’t Worry Be Happy and Que Sera Sera.

Gardener leaves legacy SURFSIDE Primary School’s gardener is moving on but leaving behind a beautiful kitchen garden.

Brendan Bolton has worked one day a week for the past three years in Surfside’s kitchen garden, helping build garden beds, a chicken coop and a recently finished shed.

“Over the past three years I’ve worked with the kids in the garden to develop and maintain it,” he said.

Brendan is a gardener by trade and has helped expand the garden that students use

to develop their own skills, especially in growing fruit and vegetables.

On his last day Brendan helped to show off the garden shed he and volunteers built over six weeks.

“The shed, which is about 90 per cent recycled materials, is made up of donations from parents and friends of parents,” he said.

Brendan is moving on to spend more time with his family but encouraged anyone with some spare time to help at the garden.

Off The Hook are playing a regular Sunday session at the Ocean Grove Hotel.

They are a great rockin’ blues band belting out tunes from some of the great artists like JimiHendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan Rolling Stones to name a few.

A country hunter NATURE Watch this week centres on the Australian Brown Falcon.

Brown Falcons (also known as Brown Hawks) are found throughout Australia and New Guinea.

They prefer inhabiting open grassland and agricultural areas, where there are scattered trees or structures such as telegraph poles which can be used for perching.

From these open perches, prey can be spotted and caught.

Brown Falcons are small to medium-sized raptors (adults are usually 10 cm to 20 cm long).

The female is generally larger than the male. I think that the female is on the right in this photo.

Brown Falcons have many varieties of plumage colours and shades of brown feathers. They generally have red-brown heads, light grey beaks, and brown eyes.

The upperparts are dark brown and the underparts are usually pale buff, or cream. The sides of the head are brown with a characteristic tear-stripe below the eye.

Paler birds may often be confused with a related raptor, the Australian Nankeen Kestrel, but this bird is smaller.

a clutching foot mechanism that allows them to catch and kill prey, (unlike eagles, kites and other raptors). Instead they have powerful hooked bills which allow them to sever neck bones with one bite! Yikes! The powerful bill has specialised teeth and matching notches which allow the birds to kill their prey.

The Brown Falcon does not hunt by chasing its prey in flight.

Instead Falcons tend to sit quietly on a perch such as a dead branch or power pole and search the area

for prey. If this fails, Falcons also search for food whilst gliding and flying.

Brown Falcons eat small mammals, including house mice and young rabbits. They also eat small birds, lizards, snakes and a variety of insects, namely caterpillars, grasshoppers, crickets and beetles. Insects form the bulk of the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diet during winter, and Falcons can often be seen chasing insects on the ground.

On other occasions the birds may build a new nest in a tree, out of sticks.

Occasionally Falcons have been observed to nest in open tree hollows. Both sexes share the incubation of the eggs, and both care for the young, although the female performs the bulk of these duties, while the male supplies most of the food.

Take the Bronze challenge

OCEAN Grove Surf Life Saving Club will conduct an Adult Bronze Medallion Pool time trial assessment on Friday September 2 at 6pm.

The Pool time trial which takes place at the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre in Ocean Grove, is the first part of the club’s Bronze Medallion assessment that will run over three weeks concluding on Sunday September 25.

The remainder of the Bronze Medallion assessments involve theory, practical, revision and water work to be completed at the Ocean Grove SLSC. To be eligible you must be a financial member of the Ocean Grove SLSC and a minimum age of 17 years.

Ocean Grove SLSC Junior Activities Manager Leisha Riddington has encouraged interested locals to gain their surf accreditation before the upcoming patrol summer season starts.

“We would be hoping the majority of young people in Ocean Grove would have their Bronze Medallion,” Riddington said.

Riddington was announced as Junior Activities Manager at the club’s Annual General Meeting in May this year.

Hearps to relish role MEET the new captain of the Collendina Cobras Jye Hearps.

The Barwon Heads resident replaces Kade Norquay as skipper of Collendina’s A-Grade team for the 2011/12 season.

Last season’s Collendina Cobras playing coach Richard Peters will stay on as coach, while Eddie Ellwood will remain in a nonplaying support coaching role.

Hearps returned to the Cobras late last season after spending the past five years working as a teacher with his wife Heidi at the Australian International School in Singapore.

This season the father-of-two will be hoping to improve the club’s disappointing A-Grade 10th placed finish last season after the Cobras inaugural A-grade premiership victory in 2009/10.

“Our number one aim is to probably try and make sure the kids are staying at the club,” Hearps said last week.

“We have had a couple of our younger players who have had pretty strong offers from Geelong cricket, which is fantastic and it is

something we don’t want to stop our kids from doing.

“We just want to make sure that they are going for the right reasons if they do go.

“It’s something that the club has always prided itself on.”

Hearps will play an active role in running the team’s duties on match days, while Peters and Ellwood will preside over training sessions during the week.

“Between the two, they will be running training during the week, obviously match days it will be my role,” Hearps said.

Hearps, a useful opening bowler for the Cobras, played four matches last season for Collendina and took six wickets at an average of 21.17, including his 3/33 off 22.5 overs against Wallington in his first game back with the club.

“I opened the bowling for the last three games of last year, I wasn’t too fast, I was more probably about line and length,” Hearps said.

The 33-year-old who works as a primary school teacher at

Kardinia International College in Bell Post Hill, played cricket in the Singapore National League for a number of years and mixed his cricketing exploits with former Sri Lankan Test cricketer Russel Arnold.

Prior to 2011 and his departure to Singapore, Hearps last played for the Cobras more than five seasons ago. Hearps’ brother-inlaw is former St Kilda AFL player Tony Brown who played 108 senior AFL games with the Saints between 1995 and 2000.

Hearps is hopeful of luring Brown, a talented cricketer who played at a high level in the Geelong region and who currently lives at Barwon Heads, to play a few games at Collendina in the BPCA this season.

Meanwhile, the Cobras have started pre-season training at the Collendina nets on Sundays at 10:30am. Collendina will also run regular training sessions at Ocean Grove Primary School at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm at the club’s home ground facility in Minerva Close.

Outstanding season wraps up Under 12 White vs Lara 2 Final Scores Cobras - 14.5.89 Lara 2 - 4.4.28 Captains: Tyler Bryan & Nicholas Warner Best: R.Healy, S.Beasley, F.Long, J.Tregenza After the road trip to Lara the boys looked edgy and keen to reverse the Round 1 result with a sharp warm up session.

Winning the toss and kicking against the wind, the boys were playing well early with goals to Sam Beasley and Fletcher Long, Lara came back with 2 quick goals to tie it up at Âź time.

The second Âź saw some

great midfield play which gave the Cobras the lead in particular, a massive bomb from Reed Jordon which went straight through the big sticks.

What happened next left the crowd gob smacked.

It became the Ronan Healy show, kicking an incredible 5 goals in an amazing 10 minutes of precision footy. Lewis Conquit led the backline well and managed to keep Lara scoreless.

The Cobras were elated at the long break but were asked to stay focused for a big 2nd half.

This they did and with multiple goals to Nathan

Taylor, Kyle Lattarulo and Ryan Symond the boys finished out their best performance of the season.

Under 12 Orange vs Torquay Grossman Captains: Wilzen Crawford & Jai Penni The Cobras last game of the season showed exactly how far the team had come since the start of the season. After a slow start things began to click.

Wilzen Crawford was strong across half back in his last game for the Cobras before heading to Noosa to live. Will Townsen and Oliver Monteith were both

exceptional as were Sue and Jai. It was great to see Jacko put in another awesome game both in the backline and in front of goal.

Harry Dodds slotted a game breaker through the middle to the delight of the coach and the home ground crowd.

Harry Rowsell never disappoints and Benny Bennett was his usual ball magnet self. Magoo jammed one home on his left and big Kal was a powerhouse all day.

Ethan Bell played the game of the season and was strongly supported by the lightning quick

Bryce Newton. Ed Ford showed how much he had improved with tough rugged footy while Lachy Gawley Price showed courage with a heavy injury not slowing him down.

The flash, Max Fairbrother was once again unstoppable and the tackles from Jimmy Synott were ferocious.

Lachy Hapgood displayed his silky skills time and time again to the adoring crowd.

Well done to all the Cobras on an outstanding season of tough but disciplined footy. Its been a pleasure to watch!

Fun day in the surf for SOUL club SOUL Longboarders ran a fun day for their August club day. With a number of members away for the Ausie titles in Port Macquarie it was a perfect opportunity to have a non championship fun day. With an Easterly wind and a messy swell good high scoring waves were a rarity on the day but it didn’t deter the enthusiasm. With the barbie fired up for a bit of breakfast and good coffee from the Dunes it was time to hit the water.

Where you finished in your first heat determined where you surfed in your final. 1st against other first and 2nd against 2nd and so on. All in all it was a good fun day and a most unusual early finish.

SOUL is hosting the Southern Ocean Longboard Festival on September 17-18. This comp is open

Ocean Grove junior tennis results THE summer tennis season starts October 15th. Any junior boy or girl looking to play in the summer season is to contact Richard on 52551034. Also, the winter presentations is on Saturday the 27th of August commencing at 12.

After a long and strenuous home and away, the first week of finals (except for section 1 who had one more game left) were upon the teams. Some teams had a second chance up their sleeve whilst others were in a straight out elimination final. All in all, the Tennis club had 7 teams in the finals including section 1.

Section 1 Boys – Defeated Highton; 5 sets 33 to 1 set 12.

Section 7 Mixed – Lost to Jan Juc. In a tense elimination final, the team consisting of Anna, Ryder, Saira, Harrison, Erin and Uzair falling agonisingly close to pulling off the win losing 3 sets 25 to 3 sets 27. Although narrowly losing the elimination final, the team had an excellent season.

Section 10 Mixed Red – Defeated Moolap.

Savannah Matthews and Steven Cini proved too strong for Moolap winning both their singles 6-2 and

combining to win their doubles 6-4 to help the team secure the win, 4 sets 32 to 2 sets 21.The team will enjoy the week off before playing in the grand final.

Section 10 Mixed White – Defeated All Saints.

After 6 hard fought sets, it was a draw, so a deciding doubles set was played.

Sabastian Bourma and Caitlin Thomas held their nerve in the decider, to win the set with a 6-3 win and ultimately win the day 5 sets 33 to 2 sets 32.

Section 12 Girls – Lost to Grovedale Yellow. The girls were unfortunate enough

to have to forfeit sets.

However, that didn’t deter them from giving their all and trying to cause an upset win. Unfortunately it didn’t happen losing 1 set 19 to 5 sets 32, but Claudia, Brooke, Ruby and Steph have had a fantastic season for the Tennis Club!

Section 16 Girls – Lost to All Saints. The girls were struck down by illness, but that didn’t stop them from almost stealing the win losing by one game, 2 sets 28 to 4 sets 29. Hannah Attard and Jaweria Shah proved a dominate force, winning their singles 6-1 and 6-4. Luckily, the girls

had a second chance so they will be back next week.

Section 17 Mixed – Defeated Geelong Lawn.

In another close finals games, the team just proved too strong for their opposition. Robert Mitten and Michael Maertzdorf played extremely well, winning their singles 6-2 and 6-1, helping to pull the team into a grand final winning 3 sets 31 to 3 sets 22.

After the first week of finals, Ocean Grove had 2 teams already into grand finals (section 10 red and 17 mixed). The remaining teams faced

tense elimination finals to progress to the Grand Final!

Section 1 Boys – After a solid home and away season finishing on top, the boys proved too strong for Clifton Springs, winning the day 5 sets 30 to 1 set 15.

Section 10 Mixed White – Following a tense win last week, the team was looking to secure a grand final position, however it was not to be. Moolap proved too strong winning 5 sets 32 to 1 set 21. Well done to Caitlin, Harry, Mia, Sabastian, Jade and Rhiley on a solid effort this season.

Section 16 Girls – In a

close struggle, the illness plagued girls just fell at the final hurdle, losing to Grovedale Yellow 3 sets 25 to 3 sets 27.

Hannah Attard provided the spark for the team, winning her singles 6-3 and combined to win her doubles with Kate Hudson 6-5. Congratulations to Hannah, Kate, Jaweria and Alexendra on another terrific season.

On a side note, Section 1 boys team members Josh Hudson, Phillip Nash and Jarryd Proctor also made the Section 2 seniors grand final.

All Grove juniors in finals

THIS week the Grove girls made the trip down the road to take on Queenscliff.

The last round of the BFL netball season saw some disappointing losses for the senior teams but plenty of domination from the junior teams. The junior girls will all be looking forward to making a mark in the finals competition starting next week.

U11- The girls displayed excellent skills and strong play to overcome Queenscliff. All played well in a great team effort.

U13 (1)- The team finished the season on a high, taking down Queenscliff 36-19. Among the best players were Emily Moroney and Abbey Badrock.

U13 (2)- A good win of 27-13 left the girls looking forward to the finals.

Emma Walker and Mikaela Giblin were named as the best players on the day.

U15 (1)- A complete domination of Queenscliff saw the Grove girls win by over 30 goals. Jess Bennett was cited as the best player with 11 goals.

U15 (2)- A great solid win by the girls of 35-7.

The team are now really focused heading into finals.

Best players included Amy Gibbs, Alice Digby and Meg Hodgson.

U17 (1)- The team played a consistent four quarters of netball with an exceptional defensive effort to double Queenscliff ’s score. Kelsey Ollis, Shelby Hackett, Laura Ellis and Emma Doolan were highlighted as the team’s best players.

U17 (2)- Well done to the girls on a win of 26-11. A great team effort ensured the team stayed in control.

Alyce O’Keefe, Bianca O’Callaghan, Brooke Walters and Lauren Barber were cited as playing well.

U19- The girls had fun in their last game of the season playing out of their usual positions and recorded an easy win of 39-14. Well done to the goaling efforts of Lauren Ollis, Sally Hood and Molly Murray.

D Grade- A tight game saw the Grove girls go down by seven goals at the end whistle. A disappointing third quarter from the girls resulted in their lead slipping away and paved the way for a fourth quarter which was all about Queenscliff. Emma McLear worked tirelessly in goal attack and Jess Doherty was enthusiastic in defence.

C Grade- Unfortunately the girls suffered a loss in a game they needed to win in order to make finals. Kelly McIntosh held strong in goal defence while Leann Cocking worked hard for her shots in goal attack.

B Grade- The team had a good game for the end of the season despite a loss of seven goals. Best players included Sally Hood and Courtney Ractcliffe in goals and Luci Ross in the centre.

A Grade- The girls just couldn’t get over the line for the last game of the season, losing to Queenscliff 35-48. The best players were Zanna Woods in goals and Lauren Ollis in defence. The team will be looking forward to training up to make a spot in the finals competition next year.

JIMMY’S BIG 200 THE Grubbers gave inspirational captain James Dalton a game to remember defeating Torquay by 15 points in their Round 17 BFL clash at Ocean Grove.

The 32-year-old Dalton who reached his 200th senior game milestone was chaired off the

ground by his teammates in Ocean Grove’s 13.11.89 win over Torquay 11.8.74.

Dalton along with Travis Gavin, Ben Ricardo, Daniel Maloney and James Stapleton all kicked two goals apiece for the home side. Key Grubber Bernie

Lynch continued his devastating form in 2011, while Sam Rankin, leading tall Tom Foott and Sam Fairway were named in the best for Ocean Grove.

Ocean Grove led Torquay at every change in a hard-fought contest.

THE firsts in their best performance of the season put in an excellent 4 quarter performance to overwhelm South Barwon 13 11 89 to 3 5 23.

Multiple avenues in attack were highlighted by a spread of goalkickers with Harry Rawlings, Paul Dreher, and Christian West all dangerous at ground level.

A dominant midfield was led by Zaine Cordy and the tireless Kieran McNally, and Tom Bean and Elliott Taylor led a well organized defence.

GoalkickersPaul Dreher 4, Lachlan Mansfield and Oscar Doyle 2 each, with Zac Henderson, Sean Dedini, Christian West, Zaine Cordy, and Harry Rawlings all kicking a goal.

In their final game of the season the firsts continued their excellent finish to the season by defeating Torquay 9 8 62 to 6 7 43.

The first half was as good as we have played all season and to Torquays credit they lifted after half time to make the final result closer.

We won first use of

the ball through Oscar Doyle, which allowed our runners Dylan Moroney, Zaine Cordy, and Kieran McNally to give our forwards excellent supply.

In defence Tom Bean, Brayden Warren, and Nick Murphy repelled many attacks from Torquay.

GoalkickersZac Henderson 5, Sean Dedini 2, and Matt Caldow and Christian West 1 each.

The seconds did their finals chances no harm beating an undermanned Corio 15 14 104 to 5 4 34.

Spencer Davies had a field day bagging 6 goals, Jack Benjamin, Curtly Balshaw, and Myles Henderson all kicked 2 goals, and Callum Herron, Ryan Traynor, and Brad Fendyk all kicked a goal.

In their final home and away game, although going down to GWSP 7 5 47 to 4 2 26 the seconds, through their determination and effort ,did enough to secure a finals berth.

James Stirling and Conor Guina were excellent 4 quarter contributors in defence, and in the midfield

Jackson Kent, Luke Davis, Brad Fendyk and Spencer Davies continually won the ball and drove us into attack.

Goalkickers – Jack Benjamin 2 with Brad Fendyk and Matt Gibbs both kicking a goal.

The Barwon Grove had a terrific win over Leopold 10 7 67 to 2 1 13.

Matt Gibbs, returning from injury, bagged six goals. Jacob Lane in the ruck and around the ground was excellent.

Josh Prendergast was prominent with his run and carry and Ben Sanders and Tim Winberg were solid contributors all day in defence.

The Barwon Grove ended their season serving it right up to ladder leaders St Marys before being outrun in the last quarter to eventually go down 13 10 88 to 3 2 20.

On both wings Daniel McManus and James Peers gave us perfect drive all day.

Ben Sanders was as usual excellent in defence and big men Jed Evans and Jacob Lane have competed well. Jake Koski and Jacob Lane each kicked a goal.

Grove power through THE GRUBBERS head into Saturday’s BFL qualifying final high on confidence, claiming its biggest scalp of 2011 defeating ladder leaders Queenscliff by 15 points last weekend.

Ocean Grove (2nd) will face a re-match against fierce Bellarine rivals Queenscliff (3rd) at Portarlington Recreation Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Queenscliff ’s loss to the Grubbers on Saturday meant it surrendered their top spot to Geelong Amateur, who finished the home and away season in first place and now have the luxury of a week’s rest.

The Round 18 BFL clash at Queenscliff, saw Ocean Grove 17.12.114 lead at every interval except half-time to overcome Queenscliff 15.9.99.

Ocean Grove coach Cameron McGregor said while it was pleasing to defeat a premiership contender, the immediate focus after the match turned to finals football.

“I said to the boys after the game that the pleasing thing was we didn’t carry on like we had won the Grand Final,” McGregor said.

“We were happy that we had won, but it is more what we have to do to keep our momentum going.

“It was very much the same in the rooms.

Everyone was happy and pleased but at the same time knowing the real business starts now.”

Key tall Daniel Maloney starred with six goals, while ball magnet James Dalton was named the Grubbers’ best player in the win over the Coutas.

Exciting youngster Jack Rawlings booted four goals and Cade Wellington kicked three majors.

For the home side Dylan Chaplin-Burchv kicked seven goals in a losing side, while the dangerous Roscoe Holmes was named in Queenscliff ’s best.

McGregor was pleased with his side’s improvement after the Grubbers lost to Queenscliff by 45 points at Ocean Grove in Round Nine.

“We didn’t take too much out of that game because we didn’t turn up to play, we played ordinary – we have improved a lot from Round Nine,” he said.

McGregor agreed his team’s structure was suited to playing on a bigger ground like Queenscliff compared to their smaller home patch at Ocean Grove.

Ocean Grove claimed a heart-stopping two-point victory against the Coutas in the corresponding fixture in Round Eight at Queenscliff last year.

SURFSIDE WAVES DIV 2 CHAMPIONS

THREE IN FINALS An Ayce debut EXCITING Ocean Grove local product Ayce Cordy made his AFL debut for the Western Bulldogs against Port Adelaide on Sunday at AAMI Stadium.

The 21-year-old who stands at 202cm was taken at Pick number 14 in the 2008 AFL National Draft under the father-son rule,

collected six possessions including five handballs, one kick and took three marks.

Ayce is the son of former Footscray defender Brian Cordy, who played 124 games and kicked 18 goals for the Bulldogs from 1981 to 1988.

OCEAN Grove seniors, reserves and under 18s (1) are all through to the finals after a solid home and away season.
