The Privateer Honored as Small Business of the Year
Sen. Patricia Bates Honors Oceanside’s “The Privateer Coal Fire Pizza” as Small Business of the Year
On August 18th, Senator Patricia Bates honored The Privateer Coal Fire Pizza as the 2021 Small Business of the Year for the 36th Senate District. Senator Bates recognized owners Charlie Anderson (father) and Sage Anderson (son) during yesterday’s California Small Business Day awards lunch at Sacramento’s Sheraton Grand Hotel. “The Privateer represents the best attributes of a small business – local roots, independently owned, and a commitment to the community,” said Senator Bates, a former small business owner. “I am proud to honor the Privateer for persevering during these challenging times and congratulate Charlie and Sage Anderson for their stewardship. Their hard work, along with their employees, have made the Privateer a success in North San Diego County.” Original founders Charlie Anderson and Jamey Stone both grew up surfing and dreamed of eventually opening their own restaurant in Oceanside, which became reality in 2012 when they opened the Privateer. The restaurant uses fresh ingredients and a 100% coal fire oven to make their pizzas. They also serve a variety of other menu items and a large selection of wines and craft beers. “We thank Senator Bates for recognizing our restaurant as the 36th Senate District’s Small Business of the Year,” said Charlie Anderson. “Senator Bates understands the challenges that entrepreneurs like us face each day. We especially thank our employees for their work and our customers for their patronage. We would not realize our dream of operating a successful restaurant without their continued support.” The business was nominated for the award by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. In his nomination of the business, Chamber CEO Scott Ashton noted Anderson’s leadership in the restaurant industry especially during the pandemic. “When it first hit in March of 2020, Charlie organized a meeting of restaurant owners to discuss the shutdowns and how they would navigate this issue as an industry. I participated in that meeting along with Councilmember Ryan Keim. As a result of this meeting, the Chamber and City stayed in close touch with that group of restaurant owners during the year to help them navigate all the issues associated with the Covid closures. This turned out to be a very tight knit group of restaurant owners who really looked out for each other and collaborated during the past year. Charlie was instrumental in making that happen.” California Small Business Day honors small businesses throughout the state for their contribution to the state’s economy. According to the latest information available, there are approximately 4.1 million small businesses in California, which account for 99.8 percent of the state’s employers and 48.5 percent of employees.

Chambers and Photographers Partner to take Headshots for Transitioning Marines and Sailors
In August, celebrated local photographers Rich Soublet and Alex Kemp converted the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce’s conference room into a state-of-the-art portrait studio so local service members, spouses and Gold Star Families could look their best as they transition out of military service and back into civilian life. It was all part of the Chamber’s collaborative work with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes and Portraits For Patriots. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program, headquartered in Washington, D.C., encouraged all area transitioning service members, spouses, and Gold Star families to elevate their ‘brand’ with a professional headshot as they apply for education and employment. Headshot “portraiteers” from Colorado Springs-based Portraits For Patriots were on hand with their mobile studio units for the expected 150 transitioning military personnel. The Hiring Our Heroes Fellows Program is a best-inclass workforce development program that places highly skilled and educated transitioning service members, veterans, military spouses, and military caregivers with employers committed to hiring them. Melinda Gomez, Fellowship Program Manager, Corporate Fellowship Program with Hiring Our Heroes, said the headshots are an important aspect of military transition. “It’s a way for our service members who are soon becoming veterans to make their first impression count and feature their face in the best light possible with a professional headshot. Polishing one’s professional image in business and for employment is not only rewarding, but also a sure path to attaining one’s goals.” Eric Stegall, Founder and President of Portraits For Patriots added, “I am truly grateful for our volunteer “portraiteers” and I could not be prouder of the impact our program is having on the transitioning military community. In today’s career marketplace, a professional headshot is an absolutely vital component when getting squared away for your transition.” The “Portraits For Patriots mission is to empower those who have faithfully served our nation to feel confident in their personal brand during civilian transition. Their nationwide network of volunteer “portraiteers” are proud to be offering this valuable, personal gift that showcases the strength and determination of our service members, spouses and gold star families, free of charge. Oceanside Chamber of Commerce CEO Scott Ashton said he is honored to have partnered with Hiring Our Heroes and Portraits For Patriots. “Our Chamber office is located a short walk away from Camp Pendleton. We have enjoyed a long-running relationship with our Camp Pendleton Marines and sailors, supporting them in any way we can. Whether it’s our Military Affairs committee, our annual Operation Appreciation event, or providing space to shoot these portraits, we will continue to be grateful to our service members for all they do for us,” he said. The three organizations hope to collaborate again to host future photo sessions for area service members and veterans and their spouses. Military spouses and women were disproportionately impacted by the Pandemic, with many forced out of the workplace. Many women desire to make a career pivot. The National Veterans Chamber of Commerce, SCORE Mentors, and the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce have responded to this call to action by piloting a free business incubator program. The Women Entrepreneur Incubator program, which launched in September via Zoom, is helping to train entrepreneurs to develop their part-time or fulltime businesses in one of three tracks: Social Media Management Company, Virtual Assistant Company, and Business/Personal Coaching. The three organizations are providing training, technical assistance, mentorship, peerto-peer support, and financial information. A “Starting a business takes commitment,” says Joseph Molina, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Veterans Chamber of Commerce based in San Diego County. “An entrepreneurial mindset and, most importantly, knowing exactly what it is you want to do and what outcome (the “Why”) you want to achieve is part of that commitment.” Entrepreneurs are hoping that starting their own
business will help them to be their own boss and take control of their destiny. “Our aim is that the first cohort will learn how to be ‘Pandemic’, ‘Recession’ proof, and ‘Portable’ by investing in themselves,” says the Chamber’s workforce development coordinator, Victoria Carlborg. An added benefit of the incubator is that each entrepreneur will receive in-person coaching and mentoring will occur at the Oceanside Chamber’s office following the online training sessions. “SCORE San Diego volunteers are experienced entrepreneurs, corporate managers, and executives with a diverse set of industries and specialties who volunteer their experience and knowledge to help small business professionals start, develop, and grow businesses,” says Laura Rau, Mentor and Veteran Outreach Contact with SCORE San Diego Mentors. “We are grateful to be able to collaborate with the City of Oceanside and the Veterans Chamber of Commerce kundalini yoga & with the incubator to help military spouses and the veteran community succeed in business!” lifestyle studio If you are interested in participating in the next cohort, please contact Victoria Carlborg at Victoria@oceansidechamber.com.Join conscious the collective S P E C I L C L A S S O F F E R I N G S U N I Q U E H A N D C R A F T E D G O O D S O N E O F A K I N D A R T J A P A M A L A S H O L I S T I C H E A L I N G S E R V I C E S S P E C I A L E V E N T S W O R K S H O P S visit our website
