Zero Waste and Climate Action
Zero Waste and Climate Action at HOME, WORK, and in the COMMUNITY
Small things you can do to make a big difference for our environment.
You may have heard about climate action strategies or initiatives while scrolling through social media, watching a viral video, and catching your daily news podcast, but did you know that a great way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is to go zero waste? By keeping materials from reaching and breaking down in the landfill, you can reduce methane emissions (which are 71 times more potent than CO2), save resources, energy, water, and cut emissions generated from producing new products, all while helping the City reach a 75-90% diversion rate. While sometimes you may feel helpless in the face of climate change, by taking action and including simple zero waste strategies in your everyday lifestyle, you can and WILL make a difference for the planet.
AT HOME:
Reduce your food waste! Shopping smart can save you money and reduce the amount of perfectly delicious food going to waste. Make a list of the meals you are going to cook for the week, and see what ingredients you already have in the fridge before going to the store. To ensure your purchases last, check out proper storage tips on the Green
Oceanside Kitchen webpage.
Compost your food scraps. Composting your food scraps creates a healthy, nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden, while keeping materials out of the landfill (and reducing greenhouse gas emissions- it’s a win-win!).
Consider building your own backyard compost bin using instructions found on the Green Oceanside backyard composting webpage. Switch your lightbulbs to LEDs. Quality LED lightbulbs are more durable, last 25 times longer (so you waste less!), and use up to 85 percent less energy than other bulbs.
Using less energy means you are conserving more of our
Earth’s finite resources. Power down or unplug electronics when not in use.
Turn off or set office equipment to power down when not in use. Turning off one computer and monitor nightly and on weekends can save up to $80 a year. SDG&E states that setting PCs, monitors and copiers to use sleep mode when not in use can help cut energy costs by up to 50 percent. Use power strips or unplug electronics such as
DVD players, game consoles and TVs that draw power even when switched off. Visit sdge.com to learn more.
According to usda.gov, in the United States, food is the single largest category of material placed in landfills, where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Landfills are the third-largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States, accounting for approximately 14.1% of emissions in 2017!

Use water efficiently! If you have a backyard, water your landscapes between the hours of 6:00 pm and 10:00 am.
Inside the house, you can easily save water too! In fact, dishwashers typically use less water than washing dishes by hand. Now, Energy Star dishwashers save even more water and energy – about 3 to 8 gallons of water each load. Reducing the amount of water we consume lessens the strains on our water supply and reduces the amount of energy needed to transport it to our region.
Sweep, don’t spray! When cleaning sidewalks and driveways, use a broom and dust pan to collect debris and dispose of in the landfill bin. No only are you wasting less water, but you are preventing pollutants from entering our storm drains, and eventually, the ocean.
Fun Fact:
100 gallons of potable water – the amount used daily by the average person at home in the U.S. – takes about 1.1 kWh of energy to treat and distribute
AT WORK:
Design your workspace around natural light. If you are currently working from home, reconsider your workspace:
Do you need to have a light on all day? Is there an alternative spot that might get better natural light? Turning a few lights off helps you reduce electricity usage and extends the life of your lightbulbs, reducing the amount of waste you produce and saving you money. Plus, if you can access your natural light during the day, consider adding a plant to further brighten the workspace and add some fresh air around you. Start a “Green Team”! If you are back in the office, join or start a workplace environmental committee, or
“Green Team,” to work with your company in making environmental impacts a consideration in everyday operations. Facilitate telecommuting and carpooling, reduce paper use, create a one-to-one ratio of recycling and landfill bins, and provide drinking glasses or reusable water bottles instead of bottled water at meetings and events. Make sure someone has the responsibility of turning off electronics, lights, and heat in the evening
and encourage the proliferation of green plants to improve air quality. Visit goingzerowaste.com for ideas! Travel Less, Rideshare More. Ride sharing, which is composed of carpooling and vanpooling, is one of the best ways to save money on fuel, insurance, and car maintenance. It is also environmentally friendly. By reducing the number of vehicles on the road and the composite number of miles traveled, vehicle emissions are significantly reduced, thus aiding in improving overall air quality and reducing greenhouse gas generation.
IN THE COMMUNITY:
Shop Local. Whether you are grocery shopping or simply purchasing home-goods, shopping local keeps the commute short, keeps your money local, and reduces the amount of gas consumed by your vehicle. Support sustainable businesses. Sustainable businesses, like those in the City’s Green Oceanside Business
Network, incorporate planet friendly actions into their daily operations. Supporting these businesses promotes a strong and healthy local economy, and promotes the use of sustainable practices in the community. Walk, bike, and take public transportation. You can drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by simply choosing alternative transportation. Visit gonctd.com to learn more about transit options in North County. Talk to others about climate action and zero waste.
Share these tips with everyone you know! Each local action can create a global impact. Encourage fellow community members to acquaint themselves with the City’s Climate
Action Plan, which outlines a wide range of voluntary actions that residents and business owners can take to reduce the City’s carbon footprint.
The City of Oceanside is dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and has a target of reaching a 25% reduction by 2030 through its Oceanside Climate Action Plan and strategies outlined in its 2020 Zero Waste Plan. To learn more about these initiatives, visit www.ci.oceanside.ca.us and www.greenoceanside.org.

The Tibesar Family
It has been said that the family that plays together stays together. Parents looking for meaningful time to spend together, and their children, can be challenging in this fast-paced and busy world. The importance of bonding and communication along with fun and laughter cannot be discounted. When families find activities that captivate and engage each member of the family, it is sure to bring them all closer together. Adam Tibesar and his family have found what they believe is the perfect activity for themselves and their young children: Martial Arts in the form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Gracie Barra Oceanside. Gracie Barra prides itself on being family orientated. “Gracie Barra is proud to be a powerhouse with the most stalwart champions of Jiu-Jitsu in the world while still maintaining a training environment that is welcoming for the whole family: men, women, and children. At Gracie Barra, families find marvelous activities through which to spend quality time together.” Staff Sergeant Tibesar and his wife Ryan have traveled the United States and beyond, while he serves in the Marine Corps. Stationed in Okinawa, San Diego, Seattle and now Camp Pendleton, they experience challenges facing most military families. Because military children are often uprooted as they travel from place to place, it is hard to connect and make friends. But Tibesar says his children have found friends in their new sport and they enjoy a commonality with other children while they practice together. Their three children: MacLain age 9, Bronson age 7, and Everenn 4 ½, are all active in Gracie Barra. Adam and his wife Ryan attended the first classes and felt it was a perfect discipline to introduce to their children. At the first the kids were both nervous and excited about the prospect of learning jiu-jitsu, so the family watched the sport online to familiarize themselves. Prior to Gracie Barra, the Tibesar children had ventured into a variety of sports but nothing “clicked” and seemed a good fit. Intermural sports have a season, but jiu-jitsu can be enjoyed year-round. It is also a simple sport, sustainable for families without a lot of equipment and expense. With everyone wearing a white Gi (the uniform), everyone is equally respected and accepted. Professor Doug is the head trainer at Gracie Barra Oceanside and Tibesar said that he is amazing with kids of all ages and that he has a great demeaner. During the training sessions it may all seem like chaos, but Professor Doug remains calm and collected and teaches young kids with patience. Jiu jitsu is a form of Martial Arts but unlike Karate, it is low impact. Some parents may be concerned about physicality but there is no striking, punching or kicking. The Tibesar’s practice twice a week with Saturday being family day as they practice techniques and games. They enjoy time on the mats and have a daily routine. They have a special spot in their home where

Our City has so much to offer! Our Community Members share why they love where they live and their passion for our community.
WH Y I LOV E
My family moved to Oceanside when I was a few weeks old over 70 years ago, so I consider myself a native Osider. What I love most about Oceanside is Community. I love that every event I attend, every time I’m out in town, I meet someone I know. I love that while Oceanside continues to grow, we retain our sense of community. Neighbors help neighbors; newcomers are quickly embraced. And, of course, I love the arts opportunities in Oceanside. We have community, high school and college plays, art galleries, poet workshops. All supported and celebrated by our Community.

I can say with confidence that after over 10 moves as a military child, I have never found a city as welcoming, charming, and hard-working as Oceanside. The culture and pride that overflows in this community connects all who live here, and over the past five years I have come to find a sense of belonging as the O’side legacy of service and strength has touched me. I have truly never felt more at home, and it is my honor to serve as an ambassador such an unforgettable city!
Oceanside is truly an amazing city to live, work, and play. Armand and I moved here from Visalia, CA in 2007. Our family found a warm, loving community of friends at Mission San Luis Rey Parish as well as through colleagues and friends working for Oceanside Unified and Bio-One. The people are friendly and welcoming, the beaches are beautiful, and there are so many opportunities to be active outdoors with the awesome year round weather we have. We love being part of the Oceanside community!

Bio-One of Oceanside
I decided to open a new location for my business, Technology Centers, in Oceanside, and ever since my office tenants and I have been enjoying the delicious local restaurants, community activities like the farmers market and walking to the beach during lunch. Oceanside’s culture and community pride makes it a wonderful city to work in.

The diversity of Oceanside is invigorating. I enjoy my horses and the beach within five miles of each other. Our community members include the length of the spectrum from delightful youth to engaging seniors. We have cultural influences that translate to yummy food variety and eclectic art modalities. I am proud to have been born a USMC baby and grown up to be an Oceanside Community builder.

Oceanside is my hometown, and I’ve reflected this past year on how much I appreciate growing up here. Having a beach day followed by a walk around Sunset Market was my favorite day precovid. Being Miss Oceanside has taught me the intricacies and interconnectedness of our community. I’m excited to experience the myriad of activities and traditions this city has to offer this upcoming summer.

Where’s the sand? !S.O.S. Oceanside! is working to bring it back!
Oceanside is an amazing beach community that is normally known for its wide and sandy beaches. Each year, Oceanside beaches suffer an increasing loss of sand. Historically, the Lake Henshaw Dam construction disrupted the sand transport down the San Luis Rey River to the shoreline. The installation and construction of the Camp Pendleton boat basin exacerbated by Oceanside Harbor breakwaters also blocked and redirected sand that would naturally flow via littoral transport south to Oceanside beaches. This sand is washed out to offshore deepsea canyons. Due to significant loss of natural sand deposits, coastal properties have experienced damage along the Strand from severe winter storms. Our Beaches have significantly narrowed North of Tyson Street and disappeared South of Tyson Street. Public safety is impacted by this loss of sand. With no sand on the beach, access for lifeguards/First responders is negatively impacted. Lifeguards no longer have access to drive their rescue vehicles along the beach to safely execute rescues. With delayed shore response, a delayed response is via lifeguard boat or personal watercraft. Additionally, the loss of our sand negatively affects the natural ecosystem for birds, fish and sand dwelling creatures. The Western Snowy Plover population has seen decline for several years due to this loss of habitat. Intermittent sand replenishment events have unsuccessfully attempted to maintain these once wide beaches without sustained success. A more permanent sand retention solution is needed now! !S.O.S.Oceanside! is a grass-roots group, championing solutions to restore our beaches. !S.O.S. Oceanside! established in 2019, is over 300 members strong and growing. Their primary focus is advocating for sustainable solutions to restore Oceanside beaches. Efforts include outreach to local, regional, state, and federal authorities on supporting solutions to the dire Oceanside coastal sand issues. Most recently, they have been successful in influencing the Oceanside City Council’s unanimous vote to fund a feasibility study is developing a strategy to protect City beaches from the impacts of long-term shoreline erosion. A private coastal engineering firm, GHD is performing the preliminary engineering evaluation and feasibility study to consider options for beach sand replenishment and/ or retention devices to stabilize and enhance the beach widths in Oceanside. GHD is nearly complete in developing proposals for the city to consider for beach replenishment/retention solutions. The goal of the study is to identify a beach replenishment/ retention strategy that is environmentally sensitive, financially feasible and has a reasonable chance of being approved through the regulatory permitting process Support of the sand study proposed solutions by local communities, residents and businesses is essential to restore our once great beaches. their Gi’s and belts are carefully placed. While there have been no competitions due to Covid 19, the family still sees wonderful benefits for themselves and their children including mental wellbeing, self-confidence, and increased focus even outside of practicing jiu-jitsu. Sgt Tibesar said his children enjoy the self-discipline and challenges that Gracie Barra provides. SSgt. Tibesar also points out that with over 900 Gracie Barra school around the world, his family can stay involved even if they are stationed somewhere else. MacLain, Bronson and Everenn Tibesar all have a passion for Gracie Barra and demonstrate their new found talent and skills that will last a lifetime.
