For more than 20 years, I have had the honor of working with Oceanside’s business and community leaders. It has been an amazing privilege for me to see our City grow into what it is today. As I take on this new challenge of leading the Chamber, I am excited for what we can accomplish in the coming years.
Our business community is passionate about Oceanside. It is made up of people who are willing to give their time, energy and finances in order to make our City all that it can be. These businesses are vital to the well-being of our community, and it is my goal to provide support in any way possible. For 120 years, the Oceanside Chamber has served the local business community by providing programs and services to help businesses succeed. We are aware that business needs are continually evolving. Along those lines, we have created a new venue for members to provide their input as to what they need from the Chamber. It is called our 12 @ 12 Luncheon Series and will provide an opportunity for a small group of Chamber members to meet with Chamber leadership over lunch to discuss the needs and expectations of the business community. If you would like to be invited to one of these meetings to give us your input, please contact me at 760-722-1534 or scott@oceansidechamber.com. I want to take a minute to acknowledge three very special people who have helped make the Chamber what it is today. First, our former CEO David Nydegger who retired in November after nearly 19 years at the helm. David did a great deal to help the Chamber build strong relationships within the City of Oceanside and beyond, including our neighboring Camp Pendleton. Mary Martinez also retired in November after 22 years as Bookkeeper and Administrative Assistant. Mary was a steady influence in helping the Chamber maintain a strong financial position over the years. And finally, Kierstin Hill, who served as our Communications Manager for the past 5 years. Kierstin recently left the Chamber to pursue another opportunity, and will be missed as she helped the Chamber build a strong social media presence and also shared much of her knowledge with the local business community. Sincerely,
Oceanside Chamber Named Veteran Non-Profit Organization of the Year At the November 2nd meeting of the Oceanside City Council, The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce was named the Veteran Non-Profit Organization of the Year. Oceanside City Councilmember Jerry Kern, along with Assemblymember Rocky Chavez, and Congressman Darrell Issa made presentations to the Chamber in honor of its work in supporting local and national veteran organizations. Congressman Issa and Councilmember Kern presented certificates of recognition to Chamber staff members Scott Ashton and Kristi Hawthorne. A certificate was also presented by Assemblymember Chavez, who served as Camp Pendleton’s liaison to the Oceanside Chamber in the late 1990’s. Chavez spoke of
the early days of the Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee and commended the organization for its growth in serving the military community. Chuck Atkinson, one of the founders of the Veteran’s Association of North County, nominated the Chamber for this award. The Chamber has been a strong advocate for veteran organizations by promoting their causes and providing them with a platform to gain exposure for their work. “It is truly an honor for the Chamber to be recognized for its work in supporting our military community,” said Ashton, the CEO of the Oceanside Chamber.

Oceanside Chamber and Genentech Partner to Promote STEM Education The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and Genentech have collaborated to provide $20,000 in classroom grants for Oceanside Unified School District. The grants were awarded to more than 35 educators of students in kindergarten through 12th grade for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related projects.
Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton, presents a check to Mike Florio at Cesar Chavez Middle School.
The grants were disbursed in increments averaging approximately $500, and will be used to provide much needed funds for equipment, experiments, classroom projects and field trips related to STEM.
“We often hear that teachers lack funds to bring hands-on STEM resources into their classroom. Partnering with the Chamber allows us to remove barriers and make a direct impact in the local classroom”, said Don Fitzgerald, Vice President and General Manager of Genentech in Oceanside. For over a decade, the Chamber has raised funds to support scholarships and classroom grants, typically disbursing around $3,000 per year in grants. “This new partnership with Genentech has allowed us to have a greater impact on education than ever before,” said Scott Ashton, CEO of the Oceanside Chamber.
Chamber Welcomes Marines and Sailors to Local Community Each Wednesday, Marine & Family Services on Camp Pendleton hosts a “Welcome Aboard” briefing for Marines and Sailors newly stationed at the Base. Over the summer, Chamber staff members began attending the weekly briefings to say a few words of welcome to the service members and to encourage them to visit Oceanside. Each service member is given an Oceanside “goodie bag” with copies of the Chamber’s publications and discount offers from a wide variety of local businesses. Chamber members who are interested in including a coupon in the bag should contact the Chamber office at (760) 722-1534.

Tracy Millero-Chin Finance and HR Director
A native of the Snow Belt in northwestern Pennsylvania, Tracy has been living in Oceanside for the last 17 years. Having gone to school to become a nurse, she found her calling in the golf industry, when she moved west to work for TaylorMade Adidas Golf in Carlsbad. She began her career in customer service/ inside sales and then set her sights on a career in Human Resources, becoming TaylorMade’s training and development coordinator. Tracy was then promoted to the lead recruiter and HR generalist for TaylorMade. After the birth of her second child, she decided to be a stay at home mom and spend time raising her two children. The go getter she is, Tracy felt like she still had something to offer. In the fall of 2010, she started her own business, renting baby equipment to families travelling to San Diego. While running this business, Tracy quickly embraced what it meant to be a business owner and entrepreneur. She ran every facet of her company: sales, marketing, finance, operations, HR and customer service. After successfully running this business for several years, she wanted to spend less time on the road and more time with her family, so she sold the business and started working closer to home. Tracy is excited to help Oceanside’s businesses grow! 14 | Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Quarterly Newsletter

Low Tech Marketing is NEW Again by: Lisa Frost, Amazinc Internet Solutions
Published on the Oceanside Chamber Blog November 3, 2016
Here’s some quick DOs and DON’Ts to get more active followers: 1. DO include an email sign-up and share options on EVERY page of your website. Place it in a prominent position and give visitors a compelling reason to connect with you (discount, free download, tips). 2. DON’T buy a list or likes! Even if it were not a violation of the CAN-SPAM act, study after study has proven that it is not an effective way to build a following. 3. DO be consistent with your communications. Sending on a regular schedule and using a standardized format for your communications sends a subtle signal to your followers that you are reliable and trustworthy.
4. DON’T make your email/social content about YOU. Remember to keep WIFM (What’s In It For Me) in mind! People want content that is about them - how it will benefit or entertain them. If you really have something special to say about you, make sure you add content for them too.
6. DON’T be afraid to try new things. When it comes to marketing, companies tend to lean towards traditional, tried and true practices. While this is a good standard, it prevents you from embracing new opportunities. 7. DO test, track and measure the results of your marketing efforts to determine what is and what is not working.
5. DO consider DIRECT MAIL. Yes I said old fashioned, low tech direct mail! With email There are a lot of DOs and and social becoming a primary DON’Ts to marketing, but if you communication channel, direct set a goal to try at least one new mail is experiencing conversion marketing tactic every week, within rates higher than ever before. a year you could transform your Mail boxes are emptier now marketing from bland to WOW! which allows for a quality If your marketing • Energy-efficient appliances can become plan is falling mailer to score big returns.
