Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Quarterly Accomplishment Report • Second Quarter 2014 Creating a Strong Local Economy Chamber CEO David Nydegger continued to join with the city’s economic development team to reach out to Oceanside businesses for purposes of retaining business in our community. Technology classes, primarily focused on social media, were taught by Chamber Events and Marketing Assistant, Kierstin Hill, as well as offered through SonicSpider, LLC. Chamber hosted two “Google Hangouts on Air,” bringing in outside speakers to address our attendees via web video.
To help educate business owners and managers on workplace safety, Chamber partnered with WorkPartners to begin a series of Workers Comp seminars. The Chamber’s Latino Business Committee had its first meetings and developed the committee’s mission statement: “To assist, support and empower the Hispanic Business Community through educational programs, leadership training and networking opportunities.” Chamber member businesses were promoted 24/7 through the Chamber’s strong web and social media presence. Chamber website had 38,862 sessions during Quarter 2 of 2014, a 40% increase over Quarter 1. The local community continued to show a strong interest in connecting online with the Chamber, as we exceeded 8,100 Facebook followers and 4,200 Twitter followers. The Chamber began efforts to host the majority of our social media related content on the Chamber’s Blog, to protect our content in the event we lose any of our social media platforms. This has the secondary benefit of driving more traffic to our website.
Representing Interests of Business with Government The Public Policy Committee continued work on the Chamber’s Policy Guidelines. Chamber CEO and Public Policy Chairman met with developer for Park Villa, a work/ live development in El Corazon. Chamber sent letters to City Council and City Manager to request update of 10 year old El Corazon Specific Plan.
Promoting the Community Chamber staff completed the first annual Oceanside Living Magazine. Majority of the work including production, photography, writing and printing was done by Chamber staff and members. Publication was due to be delivered in early July. During the fires in May, the Chamber actively reached out to the community by providing information by phone, web and social media. Chamber office also served as a temporary evacuation center during a local hotel fire, hosting numerous military families. Chamber sponsored Tri-City Medical Center’s Men’s Health Symposium. Chamber CEO was named the Grand Marshal of the Oceanside Independence Day Parade. Members who have made outstanding contributions of their time and energy are regularly receiving recognition at Oceanside City Council meetings through the Chamber’s “Member of the Month” program. Recognized this quarter were: Marva Bledsoe - Women’s Resource Center, Jeff Kassebaum - Kassebaum Photography and Christopher Rodriguez Maximum Mortgage and Real Estate.
to organize a regional chamber mixer to be held at Moonlight Amphitheatre on July 1st. To educate new and long-time members on how to make the most of their investments in the Chamber, two “Maximize Your Membership” meetings were held with several others planned for the remainder of the year. Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held for 13 local businesses. To continue its strong relationship with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, the Chamber held its 13th Annual Armed Forces Day Operation Appreciation event, attended by an estimated 5,000 military family members who were treated to a day of free food, fun and entertainment.
Networking and Building Business Relationships Annual Oceanside Business Expo was one of the City’s largest business networking events of the year. Event featured a new “table-top” format creating a better networking venue. Several successful technology seminars were held during the expo.
Political Action Chamber and Business and Community Political Action Committee (BACPAC) held a candidate’s forum for San Diego’s District 5 Supervisor’s Race. Forum was videoed and promoted through social media.
Professional Development And Recognition Chamber Board members, along with CEO, David Nydegger and Sales and Marketing Director Scott Ashton, held a planning meeting to set priorities for Chamber for upcoming year. “First Tuesday Coffee” program continued with record attendance, with food and coffee now being sponsored by members.
Chamber CEO, David Nydegger was chosen to serve on MiraCosta College’s Executive Search Committee for the selection of a new College Superintendent/President.
Local restaurants continued to benefit from “Plates for 8” networking events, with seven luncheons held during the quarter.
Chamber Marketing Assistant Kierstin Hill was awarded a scholarship to attend the Western Association of Chamber Executive’s “Academy” program in August in Sacramento.
Several Sunset Mixers, including a joint mixer with Vista Chamber were held. Chamber coordinated with Tri-City Medical Center and the Vista and San Marcos Chambers
Chamber Membership Director, Elizabeth Harwood began attending a series of seminars through National Seminars, focusing on organizational skills.
