PAMELA CAREY Elderly Parents With All Their Marbles A Survival Guide for the Kids If you’re not already engaged in dealing with the needs of elderly parents, you will be soon. And while you’ll do it gladly, you’ll also do it with a range of emotions as broad as any you’ve ever experienced, tapping into skills you didn’t know you had and ending up satisfied but exhausted. Pamela Carey has written a book in an effort to prepare you for what’s to come.

In 2009 Barking Cat Books published Pamela’s first work of nonfiction titled, Minor League Mom: A Mother’s Journey through the Red Sox Farm Teams, Pam’s story during her two sons’ years playing professional baseball, without ever reaching the big leagues.

In 2014, Barking Cat Books published Elderly Parents with All Their Marbles: A Survival Guide for the Kids, winner of the Gold Medal in 2015 from the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. Her third work of nonfiction appeared in 2018 titled, Surviving Your Dream Vacation: 75 Rules to Keep Your Companion Talking to You, based on Pam’s travels around the world. In Pam’s former lives, she was a high school English teacher and an interior designer. When not reading, writing, or traveling, Pam can be found on a tennis court.

With wit and humor Pamela describes the journey all of us will experience who have elderly parents in good health. She begins with the move to bring her parents closer geographically, the downsizing and attempt to replicate the “homestead” they left, and goes on to describe their eating and recreational habits, their long-delayed medical issues, and their demise in their nineties. Through laughter and tears, Pamela re-creates her adventures during her parents’ last ten years. Above all, this book should be held close as a resource for its glossary of necessary definitions, links, and explanations of essential things any caregiver should know. It is a comfort through the difficult process, as well as a validation of feelings that inevitably occur.

DI S C OV E R R H O D E I S L A N D AUGUST 2020

We are all living in a new time. COVID-19 swept us all off of our feet (in a not so fun way) and we have all had to quickly adapt because of it. With new terms floating around, such as “quarantine” and “isolation” we have all gotten that itch, the need to get away for a while. Here are some fun ways to escape this summer while still maintaining social distance to protect yourself and others around you: 1. Camping One of the best ways to get away and maintain social distance is by venturing out into the beautiful outdoors. Camping doesn’t cost that much and is great for families of all sizes! Even better? A camping trip can be a short or as long as you want it to be. Without the constraints of travel times and tickets or hotel accommodations, a camping trip can be quite adaptable. Choose a beautiful campground by a lake or river or take to the mountains and hike a trail or two. Just be sure to

comply with all rules and regulations and surely a fun time will be had by all! 2. Beach Getaway People often become so preoccupied with checking exotic destinations off of their travel list, they forget to explore the beautiful state that the live in! RI & MA are major travel destinations for so many, and it seems like those who live here are always itching to run away from it. With beautiful beaches and amazing small towns, these states practically scream perfect getaway. Check out sites like Airbnb or VRBO and see if there are any great rentals in your state for a quick getaway. Although many places are professionally cleaned, it doesn’t hurt to take some extra caution and disinfect surfaces before, during & after your stay. 3. Canoe, Kayak or go Tubing With various lakes, rivers and, of course, the ocean in our area, kayaking and canoeing are both excellent ways to get away for the day. If you can find the right spot, tubing could even be an excellent option! On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than being by the water. Grab a few family members or friends and make a day of it. 4. Pack a Picnic Another way to get away for the day is to pick your favorite outdoor spot,

pack up a picnic and a game or two and make a day of it. Put the electronics away and spend the day in the company of your loved ones. Catch up, reminisce on old times and have a laugh or ten. Just be sure to clean up after yourselves and leave nature as you found it please! 5. Take a Bike Ride With several trails in MA & RI, taking a bike ride is the perfect way to get out for the day and explore. Even better? It is an excellent form of exercise! Explore local trails, by sea or by land, and get some fresh air. Although current times of social distancing are not ideal, the only way to get through this is by cooperating. We need to work together by staying apart. I don’t know about you, but this pandemic has made me realize how little appreciation I had for the area I live in. Let’s get outdoors and explore where we live!

THE 5 BEST WAYS TO DRAMATICALLY INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY Being productive at work can be challenging. It can be hard to know where to start managing your time in ways that are conducive to your productivity. No matter who you are, it can be a struggle to understand how to structure your time effectively. No matter who you are or what you do for work, you need to be on point with how to manage your time. Here are five of the best ways that you can dramatically increase your productivity.

Turn Off All Distractions

Every time an email pops up on your screen, every time your phone buzzes, or when your office door opens, your train of thought is destroyed. We all like to believe that we can both participate in a group chat and write our presentation, but the truth is, we can’t. Your best work comes with silence. If you want to increase your productivity, then you have to turn off all the distractions.

AUGUST 2020 D IS COVER RHO D E ISL AN D 19

Stop Multitasking

It can be incredibly tempting to want to try and take care of several tasks at once. However, it has been proven that multitasking just doesn't work. If you think that you can efficiently juggle phone calls, emails, and presentations without losing your productivity, you're fooling yourself. If you want to increase your productivity, you need to focus on one task at a time. Take Breaks

You might think that spending more time working will help you get more things done; however, when you're burned out, you will never work as well. Studies show that taking regular breaks during the day will dramatically help increase concentration and boost your mood. To help boost your productivity, take short breaks and walk around the office or grab a mid-day latte. Implement the 2-Minute Rule

Make the most of your time by filling those tiny windows of downtime with actual tasks. Finding and completing tasks that take less than two minutes to finish will save you time during the day. If you have

20 DI S C OV E R R H O D E I S L A N D AUGUST 2020

tasks that you can complete in two minutes or less, just jump in and do them. Tackle the Biggest Tasks When You’re Alert

Understanding when you work best is key to completing the big projects on time. No set schedule works for everyone. If you're a morning person, tackle your big tasks when you first start your day. Not every day will be productive, so don’t beat yourself up over it. Instead, try to refocus your energy and implement these productivity tips into your day. Once you find what works for you, you’ll be amazed at how much you can get done. Davey Mars is a coach, writer and serial entrepreneur and the owner of Luminagency Digital.
