Black Duck is based on historical events and stars a notorious rumrunning craft of that name that smuggled thousands of cases of liquor into Rhode Island shores during the years of Prohibition. The novel draws on the real life story of how the Black Duck, manned by a crew of four from communities around Narragansett Bay, was intercepted by a Coast Guard cutter off Newport on the night of December 29, 1929. Three crewmen died and a fourth lost part of his hand in a barrage of machine gun fire. The incident gave rise to front page headlines across the country, inflaming public opinion about the the overuse of government violence on unarmed offenders. A movie about the incident is currently in production through Black Duck Productions, a Newport film company. It's expected to appear in early 2021.

What kind of art do you create? I create hand-lettered art for weddings and home. My main focus is signage (mirrored signs for weddings, and wooden signs for home), but I also specialize in hand-lettered home decor like vases, pitchers, and more small home accents! Where/How did your artistic journey begin? I've loved creating ever since I was a little girl! I've always enjoyed crafting, painting, and all things art! Growing up I would always find an excuse to craft something. I made bows for my gymnastics team, created decorations for every family party, and even designed home decor

pieces! When my now husband and I first got engaged, I dove head first into the creative side of wedding planning. I loved every minute of designing our wedding details, and started teaching my self hand-lettering to create unique decor pieces for our wedding. I created an assortment of hand-lettered mirrored signs for our wedding, and after the wedding I knew I wanted to continue on this creative path! What is your creative process like? My creative process differs for the various pieces I design. For my wedding pieces, I like to give my couples the most creative control possible! I send them a packet of design questions, choices, and styles, so I can ensure I design their pieces to fit their vision perfectly! Some couples are very involved in the creative design of their custom pieces, while other couples give me complete creative control! For my wooden home decor signs, the creative process is a bit different. Most often my customers send me the custom quote they want written on their sign, and leave the design up to me! I love this process because I am able to take the words they send me, and use my creativity to make them into a work of art! What inspired you to start your business? After designing all of the details for

our wedding, I decided to open up my business to continue my love for lettering! I started creating pieces for friends and family, which quickly led to my desire to start my own business. Which piece is your favorite to create? My two favorite pieces to create are mirrored seating charts and custom wooden lyric signs! I also host seasonal pop-up shops on my website where I offer lettering on limited edition items like vases, pitchers, lanterns, and more! These pop-up shop pieces are some of my absolute favorites to design.

What made you fall in love with being an artist? The freedom and ability to express my creative ideas and visions is what made me fall in love with being an artist.absolute favorites to design. Where are you/your business based? I am based out of Cranston, Rhode Island, but ship all across the United States!

What is your favorite project you've ever done? My favorite project I've ever done is the mirrored signs for Jared Haibon and Ashley Iaconetti's wedding! The Bachelor couple got married in Newport in August of 2019, and I had the pleasure of creating 10 different pieces for their day including a mirrored seating chart, welcome sign, table numbers, and more! Anything else you would like to add? I recently took my business full time in May of 2020. When I began my business I worked full time as a CPA, and struggled to balance my full time job and running a rapidly growing business. I took the leap into full time entrepreneurship and I am so grateful I am able to call Details and Swirls my full time career!

as letting you build productive time around (often) forgotten obligations. 2. Don't Fill Your Calendar

While it may be satisfying to see a full calendar for the next week or month, there are very few people who can stick to a rigid schedule. We all know how things just "show up" that we need to handle. Whatever time frame you're scheduling, leave enough "white space" in your calendar to allow you to handle the unexpected without destroying your plans. 3. Break Down Activities Into Simple Problems

"Start new company" is not something anyone wants to see on their daily schedule. Breaking large tasks up to "do-able" pieces, is the only way to make progress on those big goals. Learn to establish a process for identifying the individual steps of a project, and then break those down into smaller, automatic operations that you can handle quickly and that don't require intensive consumption of your resources. Successful entrepreneurs take the time to break complex tasks down into smaller pieces to make the process easier to comprehend and follow. 4. Adopt or Create a Prioritization System

There are many systems you can adopt to help you organize. "Getting Things Done" (GTD) is a popular system if you don't take it too seriously. So are the many "1-page Planners", "5-minute Journals", time blocking, SMART goals and other systems out there. You can even roll-your-own, but have a system. Any time you aren't sure what to do next, or the task ahead of you seems too large to tackle, it's your system that will help you make sense of it all.

Are you a morning person? A night owl? Do up until lunch, but never seem to get anything done after 3pm? Whatever your situation, you probably already know when your best and worst productive times are. If you don't, you might want to start paying attention because being able to schedule the right activities into your most and least energetic times is an amazing skill to have. Personally, I know that I'm wildly creative in the early morning; I get a lot done up until about noon; I'm basically a door-stop until 2pm if I don't get a nap; and I'm a phone warrior starting around 4pm and can sit back and make sales calls until about 6pm. Knowing all that about myself, I never schedule early meetings, do my most important work from 9-12, and batch all my grunt work into the mid-afternoon.

time you just took a walk, or stood out in the sane. If you break down, your whole business breaks down, so taking care of yourself might be the smartest thing you can make sure is always scheduled. Gym time, massages, beach days are all things that should end up int your schedule and, when you schedule time for yourself, treat it just like a client meeting - don't be late and show up like you mean it. 7. Close the Door

Set Boundaries. Turn off the phone. Stop checking your texts. Let people know that there are times when you are simply not available. Make sure that you communicate your limits in a polite, yet direct manner to ensure that you can have the time you need to work on essential tasks. Make your calendar public and let people know that if the time is blocked, they
