#111 Welcome to our special theatre issue with our guide to the theatre from now until January. To make room we’ve reduced the music section and other parts this month but don’t worry it will all be back to normal for October... and the lack of Agony Girl will just be a bad memory. For Starters

SEPTEMBER ISSUE Team Positive (and not the cast picture for the new season of Peatmoor CSI)
Let the new season begin!
We’re now in the tenth season of The Ocelot. And like all good US TV series, we’ve had a few changes just to keep it fresh. We’ve got a brand new cast but kept a couple of the old faces. If you look closely you can see me and Dave Stewart at the back. I’m the one in the middle. I’ll be playing the role of maverick out of control editor with a heart of gold (and a secret penchant for voles). So we’ve got the new cast. We’re all looking fresher. More dynamic. A tiny bit more in your face. Now all we need is a new set. So that’s what we’ve gone and done. This season will be based in the shiny new building behind us called The Arclite building found straddling the edge of Peatmoor lagoon in Swindon. Inside is all purple and swanky and it even has a pool table. It’s like Google but with less Californians and more people sitting at their desks eating Ginster pasties. Of course, we’re not really a US television series. We’re actually a magazine that is in its tenth year. And you’re probably wondering who all those extra people are? Well, The Ocelot is now part of Postive Media Group which includes The Link and The Swindon and Wiltshire Business Exchange hence the new cast. It’s all very very exciting. For Starters
Putting humanity on hold... A Nerd’s Last Word by Michael Bosley “We’re really busy at the moment, sorry for the delay” comes the earnestly toned recorded message down the phone as I remain on hold to get help with my recently deceased iPhone. In between the abrupt interruptions from the politely voiced lady on the recording, I’m serenaded with vignettes of super-safe singer/songwriter and wearer of hats, James Bay. The recorded message of apology repeats itself every thirty seconds or so, like an elderly relative who’s forgotten that they’d already mentioned their trip to Skegness twice since you’ve been there, but you simply haven’t the heart to highlight their rapidly degenerating memory, so you nod along and raise your eyebrows at the appropriate moments as if this is all news to you. Despite my on-hold experience, the service I received was actually hassle-free and I was able to speak to a human being with emotions and empathy and more importantly, had knowledge of the problem I was having; namely that my iPhone was performing an elaborate light show without me having asked it to, as if Siri had developed a taste for the abstract and had hijacked my operating system in the name of artistic expression. The disingenuous concern from the recorded lady is only
one example of a public service that attempts to portray a personable, approachable service in a world where such a thing will become increasingly rare. The introduction of self service tills is just one example of such a service. Back in the early days of public service, when the population of Britain was about 10 and stores had names like apothecary and haberdashery, people knew the shopkeeper (there was only one) and he would keep your moustache wax and ankle ointment under the counter for you when you next came in and ask how your day was. Now the shopkeeper is dead; murdered by big business and (probably, quite literally) by urbanised, gun wielding teenagers. Quite simply, there are too many of us scuttling around on this blue marble to make personal service anything but a long distant memory. The idea that machines will now greet us over the phone, in our stores and whenever we walk up to anything vaguely resembling a service are now the norm. There simply aren’t enough people to deal with all these, well, people. Many McDonalds stores now allow you to order your food on large, iPad-style displays so you needn’t face the ordeal of having to interact with another person, save for the moment you lurch forward to snatch your food order from their sweaty palms. Humans eh? Who needs ‘em!

For Starters On your bike to being on your bike Off The Grid with Luke Coleman Our Man in Iraq Another chapter closes in the Kurdle Burdle book, as I’ve spent the last two months trying to wrestle my motorbike back from the evil clutches of the traffic police. I had been warned by a friend that mass confiscations of unregistered bikes were taking place at traffic lights, and sure enough I fell victim to the purge. I wasn’t really sure why my wheels were being loaded onto a flatbed truck with about 20 others, but I was pretty devastated at seeing $1,200 sail down the road to be impounded. I had made a mother-of-all-crap assumptions that because the vast
majority of bikes were without plates, registration was unnecessary. Oops. It’s taken two months of repeated visits to the traffic police before I was finally given it back, even though that was only because they were sick of seeing me and didn’t want the Englishman to have a bad impression of Kurdle Burdle. I sold it a couple of days later, as per the condition of me getting it back, for a 66% loss.
When fashion attacks!
A monthly rant by The Ocelot’s resident Grumpy Gruff The Goat. This month he rants about ‘fashion’. Sometimes. Just sometimes. I just don’t get it. As always, it’s fashion that I don’t get. I once met someone who was wearing a T-shirt and jumper sleeves. No jumper. Just sleeves. It was as if her favourite auntie had ran out of time knitting the whole jumper and just gave her the sleeves for Christmas. Another one is jeggings. I don’t get that. One of the good things about jeans is that they’re jeans. You can wear them wherever you like. Even through nettles. They’re tough resiliant trousers. What in all that is unholy is the point of wearing leggings made to look like jeans? How is that a thing? Why wear something disguised as something else? Whilst we’re on the subject of jeans and this is one that has been getting my goat for years - what’s the point of saggy jeans? Why would you want to wear
jeans or trousers so they hung below your bottom? On what planet do you think that would look good? I don’t get that at all. Why do you want to show the world your bum? What member of the opposite sex would be attracted to someone who can’t even afford a belt. Okay. That one’s been around for a few years now. But it doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. It’s like teenagers decide to rebel and their main act of rebellion is to make themselves look like a complete prat. That’ll show ‘em! If James Dean was around he would have already been signed up to Rebel Without A Belt where he sticks it to the man by pulling down his jeggings to show them his Y-fronts whilst shouting ‘you can all go to hell you sleeve-wearing conformist worm!’ Actually, if you really think about it there’s been some quite weird fashion trends during history. Powdered wigs anyone? Let’s hope they’re not making a comeback anytime soon. Clothing should be stylish but
Ouch, but $400 I really shouldn’t have got. And, in truth, I can take the hit, even though it hurts. What about the scores of refugees and IDPs who had ploughed their last $300 into a vehicle to get them about town to the various spots where day labourers are picked up? They’ve lost their savings, and reasonable stabs at getting a precious few dinars. It’s a bastard cruel world.
practical. But there’s even some quite weird very impractical items of clothing that are still worn today. Take the kilt for instance. I’m sorry my Scottish cousins but why when you live in one of the coldest and windiest parts of the British isles would you wear something that makes you do a Marilyn Monroe impression every two seconds? Impractical doesn’t begin to cover it. And if someone could please explain the practical reason for a tie I’m all ears.

Film
Ssh! It’s a secret! “Hey dude! Don’t leave me hanging!”
Are You Talkin’ To Me? A Film column by Jamie Hill Sometimes my love of film does take me to the strangest places. This is really the only explanation as to how I found myself in a warehouse in South London dressed up as a ‘galactic explorer’ stood having a drink at the Cantina in Tatooine whilst a handcuffed wookie is being marched out by imperial stormtroopers behind me. It was at this point that I realised that I might actually be a bit of a geek. In case you missed it all through this summer Secret Cinema have been screening Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back at an undisclosed location in London. And it was the most immersive cinema experience I have ever had. Imax is for weaklings compared to this and you can forget your 3D as Secret Cinema actually makes you live the film. Secret Cinema, which has been going for a few years, gives film aficionados an experience that is like you’re living and breathing the film. It is more akin to roleplay than cinema.
Last year, they did Back to the Future - where they created the entire town of Hill Valley complete with clock tower and in previous years they’ve done The Godfather and The Lost Boys. They even screened the Shawshank Redemption.... in a prison. For this year though it was a bit of Star Wars. Pretty apt as it’s the year when JJ Abrams Episode VII finally gets released. And you do actually become part of the film. I don’t want to give too much away but let’s just say that I am now a member of the Rebel alliance with my instruction starting several months ago and that to get into the warehouse where it was being screened I had to undergo some rigorous rebel training. I should add that I had been sent a very special dress code of what to wear that made me look an overweight Luke Skywalker. I was also told to bring several objects to trade like precious stones - which I bought but then accidentally left in the hotel in the panic after I found that my trousers looked more like shorts and I resembled something more out of The Beano than an intrepid Star
Wars character. Luckily on arrival (by taxi as I couldn’t face looking like a nobber on the tube) everybody else looked just as ridiculous as I did. We then entered Tatooine and it was amazing. It was like being on a film set. And it all felt real. You are surrounded by people like you in costume and some of them were actors. There was even a Princess Leia, a Han Solo, Ben Kenobi and a fully operational R2D2 and C3PO just wandering around that you could actually interact with. The Mos Eisley Cantina was perfect. It looked and felt like I was in the film. After milling around eating and drinking in Tattooine we were told we needed to get on the ship ready for the next part of the journey. This is when we entered the Death Star and a real live X-wing flew over my head and saw a real live light saber fight between Darth and OB1. Finally we sat down and watched the film but even that was interactive with lighting and actors replicating what was happening on the screen. As an experience Secret Cinema was unforgettable and I can’t wait to see what they do next year.

Strike! is appearing at Oxford Playhouse on Thursday September 3
Welcome to the annual Ocelot Autumn Theatre Guide. This year’s is the biggest guide we’ve ever done, letting you know everything that is going in the region’s theatres from September to January. It’s a lot of pages to get through but we would advise you to keep this edition so you can refer it to it when you need to just so you don’t miss out on any of the goings-on at the theatres. We’ve also decided to make it regional making sure that we include everywhere on The Ocelot’s patch from Oxford to Salisbury. If you want to go a bit further afield you could do far worse than heading Reading way and visiting some of the many acts that are appearing at The Hexagon. Sadly we didn’t have enough room for Reading’s listings in this guide but head to their website at www.readingarts.
com and you’ll be able to see that the star of their panto this year is the always fantastic Justin Fletcher in Dick Whittington - a popular panto this year as Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre and Newbury’s Corn Exchange are also heading to London to become Mayor! Another decision that we’ve made is to include all the gigs and concerts that are happening at the theatres which would normally be published in our monthly live music guide. This will give you the complete picture. We’ve also included Oxford’s Glee Club in the listings just so you don’t miss out on some of the brilliant comedy shenanigans going on there. Obviously there isn’t much room to go into detail on the events in the magazine but if you head to our website at www.theocelot.co.uk you can see the full details for each event including ticket prices etc.

Going wild at Wilderness
Wilderness Festival - A Review by Angus Burnett Wilderness has come to be seen as one of the ‘posher’ festivals, held in the beautiful grounds of the Cornbury Estate attended by ‘the beautiful people’. In reality, the festival is a lot more interesting than that. Always conceived of as a collision of the arts, the weekend is one of music, theatre, cinema, cooking, debate, dancing and surrealist sport – people on wooden seahorses playing football with corny French commentary? The now traditional saturday night spectacular featured a huge, glowing puppet dancing through the crowds. There are also the opportunities to wild swim or run, hot tub, practice yoga or take your wild cubs to a whole host of free activities. Yes, some of it is overblown. It runs from the downright pretentious, through the arty but somehow works, on to the clever and sublime. There are themes for the individual days and many attendees go to different lengths to dress up, again to greater and lesser effect. Some have an obvious natural flair for design to those who buy off-the-peg, ‘stick some gears on it and call it steam-punk’ items. Etsy must go into melt-down in the lead up to Wilderness. In the sunshine though, the whole thing adds up to more than the sum of its parts and is incredible fun. The last time I was here, the festival had grown from its original boutique-y size and feel. A tiny element of loud ‘I can dress up, get drunk and do what I like’ had crept in. Since then, the festival has doubled in size again and, this year, had 30,000 people. It’s a tricky business growing a festival and retaining its character but the organisers of Wilderness have pulled it off. The doubling in size has stabilized the atmosphere pulling in more families and greater diversity. The vibe was chilled and friendly. Everyone wanted everybody

else to have fun. Bjork headlined the Friday with her love it or hate it meandering art. George Clinton brought the party the following night with funk which tore the roof off it, pukka. Sunday night closed with Ben Howard. Some of the delights were the afternoon acts though. Roisin Murphy being effortlessly clever in a way that made Bjork seem like she was trying too, too hard. Seun Kuti delivering a short set of great afro-beats after a difficult start. Caravan Palace grooved with verve. Wandering around was rewarding. Fag Junky’s outré set delighted kids and seasoned groovers. You might also stumble across naked Macarena dancers (probably best avoided), immersive sensory modern classical in a beautiful old Belgian travelling theatre, great bluegrass and good times at the Juke Joint and, as daylight seeped away and then back again, decadent disco deep in the woods.

Polyphonic Spree head to the O2 Academy The Polyphonic Spree are doing a tour for the 15th anniversary of their debut release, “The Beginning Stages of…” They’ll be coming to the O2 Academy in Oxford, on the 5th of September where they will be playing the entirety of the album, as well as more songs at the end. And there’s so many of them they’ll probably fill the venue right up! The Polyphonic Spree first appeared in 2000, a collective of musicians drawn from across the
Dallas, Texas area, The Spree’s two dozen members took the stage in flowing robes of snowy white, an appropriate backdrop for their happy and uplifting blend of pop, orchestral rock, and touches of gospel soul. The line-up and costumes have varied over the years, largely because of the flexibility necessary in travelling with such a large band, however Tim DeLaughter is still at the helm, with their most recent studio album ‘Yes, It’s True’ confirming that they’ve still go it.

Brewery Bird
A Woman Walks Into A Bar…..
Melanie Sykes embodied the woman drinker in the nineties in a now dated ad campaign
The Beer Column by Brewery Bird A Woman Walks Into A Bar….. And orders a pint of beer. It’s not a punchline. The number of women drinking in pubs and trying real ale has doubled for the first time in five years from just 14 to 39 per cent. More than half of all women (54 per cent) say they now visit the pub regularly and what’s more, over a third of female drinkers surveyed said they had tried a ‘craft ale’, with 66 per cent of these reporting that they felt modern beers now offered a more interesting range of flavours. The media labels such statistics as a ‘drinking trend’, but perhaps this is less trend, more education and freedom of choice? This rings true when you consider that it wasn’t until the 70s, that women (usually of the younger generation), were seen alone in pubs, let alone ordering a pint of ale; although this was usually in defiance of parents’ attitudes towards ‘un-ladylike behaviour’ and often not because they enjoyed drinking whatever insipid offering was on the bar at the time. Indeed lone women drinkers were usually considered of ‘dubious nature’ and potential easy pick-ups because surely they were only frequenting such manly establishments in order to seek the company of ‘dubious males’. And it wasn’t much more fun in the early 80s either, in particular for women living in smaller towns or rural
villages. Pubs were quite often divided into a lounge area and separate bar; the latter which was considered ‘men only’. Women even in these liberated times were usually accompanied by a man or drinking in social groups. And forget waiting for your turn on the snooker table in many bars, as this was still frowned upon. Even more demeaning were the oft stereotypical musings of the male drinker that a woman ordering a pint at the bar must clearly enjoy the company of other women a little too much! Sadly, these views still appeared rife into the 90s when a woman ordering a pint of ale would still be a very tiny minority amongst her friends, the latter preferring to be seen perusing the very limited wine list (usually a choice of room temperature Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio) or second shelf sickly sweet spirits – cinzano and lemonade anyone? Indeed, this Bird was often referred to as ‘one of the lads’ when it came to a round of drinks and a pint of Directors was cheerfully shoved in my direction. Oh and if I’d wanted to follow suit and ‘spice up my life’ as 5 so-called female songstresses of the time were urging, it would have required more than a couple of pints to don such miniscule outfits as per 90s evening wear dictated, uninhibited. (sorry, flashbacks). So trend or not, we’ve never had it so good. The vast array of beers now on offer and available to all would have been unthinkable only 40 years ago. We are a more educated and informed consumer demanding only the best. Long may it continue!

Food and Drink
Nice Swan! By Ocelot Food Columnist Dave Stewart The phrase ‘real pub food with a twist’ is thrown around an awful lot these days. And in the cases of most eateries making such a claim it tends to mean - at best- vaguely admirable attempts to follow a seasonal ingredient from time to time (often no more than a Brussels sprout at Christmas) and - at worst- serving you the same old tired pub menu from the same old frozen suppliers you’ve eaten a million times. It has its place, but it’s not really anything to get excited about. Well, good news…the highly-acclaimed pub The Swan at Wilton (most recently Gold Medal winners of the ‘Taste of the West’ food co-operative and perennial 5-star favourite on Trip Advisor, to name just a couple of its recent accolades) is embracing food miles and turning them into an advantage, as landlord Bill Clemence explained: “We’re in a very fortunate position in the West Country – we have excellent cheeses, meats, game, cured meats, veg, ice cream, ales, ciders, even vinegars – almost everything you could need to cook a meal is produced somewhere around here –so it makes complete sense to celebrate them on the menu. “The quality of the products available, particularly in recent years, has soared. All we have to do is cook them into delicious meals”. And the punters certainly seem to agree – with award after award coming at this picturesque country pub in
rural Wiltshire. But don’t expect it to go to the pub’s head – for this is one pub that isn’t remotely interested in appealing to the foodie darlings and Michelin-starreviewers of this world, “No, we’re very clear on that – that’s not we’re about – we just want to do the traditional pub thing, but using local ingredients wherever possible, and giving people the tastiest Sunday lunch they’ve had in ages. To remind you why we all fell in love with them in the first place!” And it doesn’t just stop with the food, as Bill is keen to point out, “ When people think West Country –they often think ‘cider’ – but it’s not always had the reputation as the best drink, with people’s perceptions swinging wildly from cheap and nasty scrumpy to, in more recent years, ice-cold mass market blandness. What we want to do is introduce our visitors to real cider – made in small batches by local producers, with a real depth of flavour, history and character, that pairs as excellently with food as any wine. In fact, we encourage visitors to share a carafe of cider, and even often suggested pairings on the food, too – for example, our legendary Ploughman’s goes great with a glass of Sandford Orchards’ and our Homebaked local honey-and-mustard ham is complimented excellently by Norcott’s Elderflower cider – which sounds weird, but I promise you tastes amazing!”.
