Dedicated to Alexandros

Love at first sight In the background, the monasteries atop the high cliffs And the murmur of the monks praying To protect the small town From the spirit of the Heavy Metal rock concert. A magical setting, a friendly crowd, An underground channel of love, And the burning gaze upon me Of the fairy from the nearby forest; I could have played for hours... The concert is ending, Applause, cheers; There’s something special; I don’t want to leave. And then I saw you, With your long blond hair And your long white skirt, A dream bride, Holding on to your boyfriend with one hand And waving at me with the other –Love at first sight– I sensed you before I saw you, In two images, like flashes: I whisk you away, and on a dragon’s back we fly Over the high cliffs; I whisk you away, and on a big motorbike We vanish into the nearby forest. Time is not on my side. The band’s moving offstage, we’re drifting apart; I know this is the beginning of everything. I’ll find a way to bring you to me, My fairy.

In the meadow full of poppies I searched for you in the deep blue Of my most secret dreams; I tried to touch you In the distant meadow full of crimson poppies, At the very instant when the brilliant violet Summer sky of my homeland Bathed your long blond hair, And your tender blue eyes Shone with the completeness Of the purest love.

6

In the mirror I saw you again yesterday, In the mirror; Your blue eyes, The beloved seas Of my adolescent dreams; White satin – black leather, Τhe clock turned back; Burning kisses, ragged breaths Carry me to Paradise; Angels beckon me Along the distant pathway; Love without bounds, Our passage to eternity.

A Breath of Fresh Air

W

hen I was young, our visits to Uncle Pavlos were like a breath of fresh air. Their house always smelt of vanilla from the lovely puddings his wife made. My uncle would often tell stories about the years of his youth he spent in exile. His wife would tell him off, saying his stories were not appropriate for children, and then I would know the time had come to play Ludo or Snakes and Ladders with my uncle. And, of course, there was my favourite game of making up rhyming couplets*, where he would always begin the rhyme and I would finish it off. When I was in the last year of Junior School, he gave me his favourite book, ‘Capital’, telling me to read it when I became a student. There was a dedication inside: “To my sweet little Angeliki of the brave spirit, who is not one for piano lessons or gym classes, but better suited to social conflict and politics”. Nobody told him off about that strange gift, and then I realized, with sadness, that our fun and games would not go on for much longer. * “How’s life with Mummy?” “Distress and drudgery.” “How’s life with Daddy?” “Tears and secrecy”. “How’s life in the classroom?” “It’s my paternal home”. “What’s the mountain saying? “My Mum needs loving”.

8

“What’s the sea saying?” “The mermaid needed scolding”. “Why did you scold her, but why? “Because, one dawn, she took from me, The father I love so dearly”.
