A Modest Proposal for the 21st Century Folksinger

Patio Studio 1 saturday, oct. 13, 10:30aM-12:00PM Jon Brooks recently said “our forthcoming songwriters need to understand that their vocation is not simply going out and getting paid to be cute and entertaining. I’d like to encourage today’s songwriters to rise to the occasion and write the songs that our current age needs. Leave the rest for pop singers and reality TV. Aim higher and we’ll all be rewarded...our community, now more than ever, has an urgent role to play in the world. The problem is none of us act like we understand our true potential.” Ian Tamblyn moderates this dialogue that gets to the heart of the thing: folk matters.

Agents and Managers - When and Why, if at all?

Patio Studio 1 FRIday, Oct. 12, 2:30PM-4:00PM What do agents do? What do managers do? What do artists do in these relationships? How does an artist know who, when, why? How does the artist know when it is or isn’t working? What changes, if anything, at different stages of the artist’s career? How does the money work and why? Russ Kelly moderates this session that is often requested in the OCFF post-conference survey.

All-Night Jamming Patio Studio 1 thursday, Oct. 11, 9:30PM-6:00aM FRIday, Oct. 12, 9:30PM-6:00aM saturday, Oct. 13, 9:30PM-6:00aM Need we say more? ArtsCan Circle Film

Club Studio 1 FRIday, Oct. 12, 10:00PM-11:30PM A Walk in My Dream tells the incredible and inspiring story of Sarnia, Ontario harmonica virtuoso Mike Stevens, who’s played the Grand Ol’ Opry more than 300 times.

Blues Jam

Club Studio 3 FRIday, Oct. 12, 11:30PM-2:00aM Join Brian Blain as he encourages, prompts and draws the blues out of us all.

Broadcasting Summit

North Studio 1 FRIday, Oct. 12, 11:00aM-12:30PM The Broadcasting Summit is a networking meeting for those who are interested in the present and the future of broadcasting as it relates to folk music. Share your experiences as a podcaster, on-air personality, producer or online DJ with your peers.

Building and Strengthening Your Organization

Patio Studio 2 FRIday, Oct. 12, 2:00PM-5:30PM Are your board meetings too long? Are they an exercise in frustration? Do you leave meetings angry and annoyed? Do you agree with John Kenneth Galbraith that “meetings are indispensable when you don’t want to do anything”? Would you like to know how to make your meetings more productive and more satisfying, whether you are the chairperson or a board or committee member? You will leave this Nathan Garber-led workshop with practical strategies for making your festival board and committee meetings more pleasant and more productive experiences. Special attention will be paid to the unique nature of volunteer boards and how to make meetings better when you are not the chairperson. The workshop will also provide an update on the new Ontario Not-forProfit Corporations Act and how it will affect your organizations.

Community Choir Rehearsal I Garden Studio 3 THURSday, Oct. 11, 7:00PM-8:30PM Choirs are great ways to gather and build communities. Join in the fun and prepare a couple of songs to serenade delegates as they head into the Saturday evening Gala Dinner. Crossing Borders

North Studio 2 FRIday, Oct. 12, 11:00aM-12:30PM The border between countries is invisible, or so we’d like to think. Why does it seem so difficult to be allowed to play in other nations? This is your guide to cutting red tape and working within the system to reach your far-flung audiences in the age of “free trade.”

PANEL AND WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS listed in Alphabetical Order

Discovering New Voices North Studio 2 SATURday, Oct. 13, 10:30aM-12:00PM The Georgian Bay Folk Society has initiated a Youth Discoveries program that has really taken off in the region served by GBFS and their flagship event, Summerfolk. Jane Harbury has, for many years, run a Discoveries concert series of her own in partnership with Hugh’s Room in Toronto. How have these efforts contributed to the discovery of new voices in the folk community? Come with your own success stories and questions about how to get started in your own area. EKA Brunch & Interview

Graydon SUNday, Oct. 14, 11:00aM-12:30PM Join Estelle Klein Award recipient Arthur McGregor and interviewer (and past Estelle Klein Award recipient) Richard Flohil as they chat together. Learn more about Arthur’s lifelong fascination with folk music and the people and instruments that make it.

Emergency Planning & Insurance Patio Studio 2 SATURday, Oct. 13, 2:00PM-3:30PM Every festival and event has risk associated with it and there are liabilities around every corner. How do OCFF member festivals create and maintain emergency plans and ensure that they are meeting the requirements of insurers of all kinds in a shifting world of risk? SOCAN: Follow the Folk Dollar Pay the Bills Through Live Performance

North Studio 2 FRIday, Oct. 12, 2:30PM-4:00PM Its not easy eking out a living as a touring Folk artist. Touring can be lucrative but knowing where the money comes from and how to get it isn’t always clear. For example, many touring artists have no idea how to collect on the back-end from SOCAN for their live performances. The presenters are paying the license fees, we pay you the royalties! All it takes is a bit of paperwork and an understanding of the requirements and process. This panel will focus on the synergistic relationship between the touring Folk artist, the presenting community (festivals, soft seaters, clubs, house concerts) and SOCAN. This panel will be interactive, visual and have an open dialogue on the obstacles and opportunities we all face in our community as touring artists, presenters and as a performance rights organization.

Social media for Touring Artists North Studio 2 FRIday, Oct. 12, 9:30AM-11:00AM Keeping up with all the apps is a challenge writ large when you’re on the road. Song Placement, Publishing and Royalties

Patio Studio 1 FRIday, Oct. 12, 4:00PM-5:30PM Have you heard a friend’s song playing in the background on a TV show or in a movie? How did that happen? Are they going to be rich now? This session explores the mysteries of song placement from the perspective of the music supervisor and the artist and brings “neighbouring rights” royalties into the mix.

Vance Gilbert’s Collision Course Club Studio 3 FRIday, Oct. 12, 2:30PM-4:30PM There are great songs out there that you’ll never hear because they are “under-performed” by the artists. And there are great artists out there that have all the chops in the world but short shelf lives in the eyes of the listener because they perform songs that need “tweaking.” And there are some situations where a little work on both can bring a performance to life! Vance’s Collision

Course Workshop offers you the opportunity to take an instructive, simultaneous look at your performance skills and your songwriting in an “open mike” stage setting. That’s where it all finally happens, right?
