The Potter's Potter’s House House Provides Summer a Therapeutic The Safe Haven Adventure Program (T.A.P) for“Providing Our Community's Youth a unique blend of therapy and fun”
Over the first 18 years of life, children experience a range of dramatic physical, cognitive and social-emotional changes. While most are able to transition successfully into adulthood, some have trouble coping with these changes during their adolescent years. The Potter's House Family and Children Treatment Center provides care, treatment and comfort for children at this much-needed time. "Our center is a place were children can come, have fun and feel comfortable about being treated with no stigma attached," says Office Manager Ajori Tobias. Started in 1996, the organization first opened The Potter's House Homes for Children to serve as a therapeutic residential center for children from Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). The centers were located in Stone Mountain, Lithonia and Clarkston. In 2006, The Potter's House Family and Children Treatment Center opened in Stone right around corner, be in Mountain ummer to provide is mental health servicesthe to not only theso children the residential but alsoatospot the families in the child surrounding metro sureprogram, to secure for your at The Atlanta community. To accommodate families lacking transportation, the treatment center also provides free transportation within a 20-mile radius. Super Saturday is another favorite amongst kids and operates similar to TAP So with the incredible array of services offered, what is The Potter’s House planning for the future? SUMMER FUN

unscreen, popsicles, crafts, and field trips. It’s that time of year again—time for the kids to head to camp. If your child is going, he or she will have plenty of company: Every year, there are some 11 million campers in the U.S. who attend a summer camp, according to the American Camp Association (ACA). Campers aren’t the only ones looking forward to summer, though. With more than 12,000 camps in the U.S., 1.2 million people will go to work

as counselors, activity leaders, food service and health care providers and maintenance workers, the ACA says. Parents, you’ll need to do some homework in deciding where you’ll send your child. Whether you’re on a tight budget or have the money to send your child to a specialty camp this summer, you’ll want to consider a few key things before choosing a summer camp. After all, many childhood memories are made during summer. Today, summer camps offer programs
for every interest under the sun—from music camps to basketball and cheerleading camps, and everything in between. Find programs that match your child’s interests. Consider exploring areas of interest that are not offered at your child’s school or that are underrepresented. Performing arts, for instance, may not be in your child’s school’s curriculum but you notice your child is in every school production. You might try locating a drama continued on page 8

camp at your local community theater. Ask yourself: Does my child show a particular aptitude for a certain subject like science? If so, you might want to check with your local colleges to see if they offer summer youth research programs. Children who like animals or nature, for example, may want to attend a camp focusing on the environment. Visit the potential camp, if time permits. Go on a rainy day, if possible. It is important to know that the children are still busy, even if it’s raining. Find out how the daily itinerary is structured. Are kids permitted to stray and left unsupervised? How engaged are the camp counselors with the children? Make sure your child is safe from predators. Ask camp directors what their protocol is for safeguarding against sexual abuse. Every state develops its own criminal background check system and most conduct criminal background checks on employees 18 years of age and older. Ask about
hiring practices and staff return rates. If this is the fourth camp where a person has worked in four summers, that could be a red flag. The ACA says that 48% of camps report a staff return of 50% or more.
Ask about discounts and scholarships for camp. Sending multiple children to camp can prove to be financially challenging. Many camps have a reduced schedule of fees for parents sending more than one child to camp and for low-income families. Ask about special rates, early enrollment, repeat camper discounts, as well as camperships (scholarships). Does your child have special dietary needs? If your child has diet restrictions such as low fat or vegetarian diets, check with the camp to see if they can make special accommodations. Otherwise, be prepared to pack snacks and lunch for your child. What other obligations must you consider? Keep other summer obligations such as family reunions and vacations, back-to-school shopping

his year’s “Dream Big—Read” summer reading programs in public libraries throughout Metro Atlanta will be packed with activities and special guests, ready to entertain students and their families. “During the summer, branches will provide literacy-based entertainment for children, encouraging them to read throughout the summer and into the school year,” said Jana King of Gwinnett County Library’s Events and Outreach Department. “Studies have shown that children who read

during the summer either keep the same reading level or excel, while those who don’t can tend to fall behind when the school year begins.”
Atlanta-Fulton County
Atlanta-Fulton County will add plenty of feline friends to its summer series as the library system teams up with the Atlanta Zoo for ZooMobile visits. Starting in June, each library branch will receive two visits from Zoo Atlanta’s ZooMobile outreach
program. The 45-minute program includes a trained educator who gives presentations with small animals, hands-on teaching tools and entertaining educational activities. At the conclusion of each program, participants will receive recommended reading lists that reinforce what is taught. Mobile Zoo’s first stop will be on June 1, 12 p.m., at the library’s Washington Park Branch, 1116 Martin Luther King, Jr., S.W., Atlanta. “Keep your children on the “GOOD FOOT’!
latfoot is common in both children and adults. When this deformity occurs in children, it is referred to as ‘pediatric flatfoot’. Although there are various forms of flatfoot, they all share one characteristic – partial or total collapse of the arch. Pediatric flatfoot can be classified as symptomatic or asymptomatic. Symptomatic flatfeet exhibit symptoms such as pain and limitation of activity, while asymptomatic flatfeet show no symptoms. These classifications can assist your foot and ankle surgeon in determining an appropriate treatment plan. Symptoms Flatfoot can be apparent at birth or it may not show up until years later. Most children with flatfoot have no symptoms, but some have one or more of the following symptoms. *Pain, tenderness, or cramping in the foot, leg and knee * Outward tilting of the heel * Awkwardness or changes in walking * Difficulty with shoes * Reduced energy when participating in physical activities * Voluntary withdrawal from physical activities
Diagnosis In diagnosing flatfoot, the foot and ankle surgeon examines the foot and observes how it looks when the child stands and sits. The surgeon also observes how the child walks and evaluates the range of motion of the foot. Because flatfoot is sometimes related to problems in the leg, the surgeon may also examine the knee and hip. X-rays are often taken to determine the severity of the deformity. Sometimes additional imaging and other test are ordered. Non-surgical Treatment If a child has no symptoms, treatment is often not required. Instead, the condition will be observed and re-evaluated periodically by the foot and ankle surgeon. Custom orthotic devices(custom-made shoe inserts) may be considered for some cases of asymptomatic flatfoot. When the child has symptoms, treatment is required. The foot and ankle surgeon may select one or more of the following non-surgical approaches: *Activity modifications. The child needs to temporarily decrease activities that bring pain as well as avoid prolonged walking or standing. * Orthotic devices. The foot and ankle surgeon can provide custom orthotic devices that fit inside the shoe to support the structure of the

foot and improve function. *Physical therapy. Stretching exercises, supervised by the foot and ankle surgeon or a physical therapist, provide relief in some cases of flatfoot. *Medications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, may be recommended to help reduce pain and inflammation. *Shoe modifications. The foot and ankle surgeon will advise you on footwear characteristics that are important for the child with flatfoot. When is Surgery Needed? In some cases, surgery is necessary to relieve the symptoms and improve foot function. The surgical procedure or combination of procedures selected for your child will depend on his or her type of flatfoot and degree of deformity. Dr. Naim G. Shaheed, D.P.M. Habitual causes are environmental or situational depending on the habits of the individual. Carrying backpacks improperly can contribute to a spinal distortion. Poor sitting habits and practicing poor posture can also affect spinal development in children. Signs of scoliosis are a high hip (uneven hips), a high shoulder, the head being off center, head tilt, back and leg pain.
