Stonecrest AMC opens IMAX screen LITHONIA—Moviegoers will feel as if they are in the movies when they visit the AMC Stonecrest 16 theatre at the Mall at Stonecrest. The southeast DeKalb County theatre is opening The IMAX Experience®, bringing digitally re-formatted movies up-close and personal. “This is a new experience that we are excited to bring to customers,” said the theatre’s General Manager Vincent Seay. “This is nothing like what you’re used to seeing—it has better surround sound quality and a crystal clear image on a much larger screen.” AMC has modified one of its 16 auditoriums for the new IMAX movie theatre screen. The new technology combines crystal-clear images and powerful digital sound that has 10 times more dynamic range. To maximize the field of view in the modified auditorium, the screen was replaced with a larger, slightly curved IMAX screen positioned closer to the audience. Some of the movies will be in 2D format (two dimensional) and others will be in 3D, where special glasses are worn to enhance the vivid effects. A group of VIPs attending the opening April 28 screening, “The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience,” gave thumbs up to the new experience. “I love IMAX movies. They are great because you really get pulled in and become a part of it,” said Melissa Harmon, who was among the VIP guests. “I came from Monroe to see the film and it is worth it. IMAX is just a lot better than the regular movie screen, hands down.” Officials held a ticket tearing ceremony on April 29 to celebrate the opening of the theatre. See IMAX, page 6 INSIDE

Community News Fees at Browns Mill Aquatics Center going up The fees at Browns Mill Aquatics Center are going up this summer, and nonresidents for the first time will have to pay more to use the facility. The move is in line with what other metro area counties have been doing for years for those who utilizes their services. Residents in unincorporated DeKalb County, along with those who live in Lithonia and Pine Lake, will get the best breaks under the new fee structure. The cities of Lithonia and Pine Lake are included in the county’s service-delivery plan and pay a higher millage rate than other cities. The rates for youths under 17 will be $5, up from $3; for adults 18 and older, $7 up from $5; and the season pass will rise to $80, up from $75. For residents who live in other DeKalb cities, the fees will be $7 for youths, $9 for adults; and $85 for a season pass. Non-DeKalb residents will pay $10 for youths, $12 for adults and $90 for a season pass. County commissioners approved the proposed fees at its April 26 board meeting.

Officials to break ground on new ‘Y’ at Wade Walker Park By Valerie J. Morgan STONE MOUNTAIN— Say goodbye to the outdoor pool at Wade Walker Park. Say hello to a new Y that will be built at the site and will house a new pool. The county is closing its pool to make way for the construction of a 50,000-square-foot Y that officials are touting as a “first class program.” Officials plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Y on May 9. The facility will be built on 11 acres near the park’s entrance on Rockbridge Road as a privatepublic partnership between the Y and DeKalb County. It is the first-time the Y has embarked upon such a partnership with DeKalb County

Parks and Recreation, but not the Y’s first private-public partnership. The comprehensive recreation facility will have several multi-purpose rooms, a fitness area, suspended walking track above a gymnasium, an indoor pool and an outdoor interactive water feature that will include some of the features found at the Browns Mill Aquatics Center in Lithonia. The section of Wade Walker where the Y will be built is expected to remain closed for about a year, county officials said. The rest of the park—its playground, ball fields and trails—will remain open. The Y will operate the facility and maintain it, as well as hire the employees to manage it once the facility opens, officials said.

store—skinny, wide leg, flare, short, long—from sizes 4 to 18. This is the place you’ll find all of our styles,” said Jason, who is president and CEO of PZI. “We want the women who live here, as well as those who visit Atlanta to visit our store.” The Jasons recently appeared on Fox Business News to discuss the company’s success as a small business, which has grown over the years. Claire said she and her husband started the business because she wanted denim that fit “hourglass” women like herself and those in her family—and because Dan wanted to ensure that despite successful lawyer careers, they built something else to fall back on. “I decided to launch the company because I believe that you should diversify your portfolio. You shouldn’t put all of your eggs in one basket,” Jason said. “It’s been an amazing journey.” The company is launching its LisaRaye collection this summer, an all white denim collection inspired by actress Lisa Raye McCoy. PZI Jeans held a red carpet event for the launch of the collection and the new store in mid April. Lisa Raye explains why she

partnered with PZI in a recorded video on the company’s web site at www. pzijeans.com: “The reason why I wanted to become a designer and partner with PZI Jeans is because they have made the ultimate fit,” say Lisa Raye, who is sporting all white—her trademark. “This jean fit is for every woman—any woman that has a fit problem: too much material in the waist where it gaps up, not long enough, not enough material and stretch in the hip area..” The new PZI boutique has the feel of an upscale urban shopping destination with its concrete floors, and chic furniture and lighting. Jason said it’s a good place for women who not only want to shop, but who want special attention. “Women can get their girlfriends and come for a shopping party and we will provide refreshments and a denim specialist to help them with their fittings,” Jason said. “If they’re wearing flats, they don’t need to worry. We have high heels if they need them.” PZI Jeans is located at 4679 Hugh Howell Road, Suite E-F, Tucker. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

DeKalb sheriff gains more insight on homeland security through visit to Israel

D

eKalb County Sheriff Thomas Brown visited Israel last month to learn more about homeland security strategies. Brown was part of an 18-member delegation that took the trip April 10-16. The group attended policy briefings and met with top government officials to learn firsthand about the critical role Israel plays as a strategic ally of the U.S. Among the issues discussed: terror incidents and crime scene management, mass casualty incidents, international terror financing and media management. Brown said the trip provided an invaluable education. “I’ve always been interested in how other law enforcement agencies tackle challenging problems, especially

homeland security.” The trip was funded and sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, which was established to promote the exchange of best practices in law enforcement. In 2007, Congress passed legislation boosting homeland security cooperation between Israel and the United States. That year, Israeli Public Security Minister Avi Dichter said the U.S. “should use Israel as a laboratory” for the development of its own homeland security needs. Brown said through the trip, he gained a complete admiration for the citizens of Sderot , who find themselves under the constant threat of violence by Hamas terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip, seven miles away.

100-year-old crowned Ms. Delmar Gardens queen LAWRENCEVILLE—Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett has crowned a new queen at the Gwinnett County nursing and rehabilitation center. Virginia W. Barnes took first place in the center’s annual pageant, where residents, their families and staff voted who would be crowned the center’s 2011 queen. Barnes, 100 and turning 101 in September, received a bouquet of flowers and a tiara after competing in a pageant that promotes a positive image of aging. Barnes won by showcasing her modeling skills and discussing with the crowd how she continues to promote the positive image of aging and her philosophy on life. Edwina Gaddis was crowned first runner-up. Other participants included Irene Norman, Virginia W. Barnes Jeanine Malcolm, Blanche Taylor, Rose Nowicki and Mary Davis. “She (Barnes) is just full of energy. She’s one of those feisty people who will cheer you up and put a smile on your face,” said Jennifer Thilo, the center’s executive director. “She always dresses to the T and every morning, she will not come out of her room for breakfast until she puts on her makeup first.” Barnes, who won the vote by a landslide according to the center, was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Alabama. Before moving to Delmar Gardens, she was active in her community of Prattville, Ala. She was a volunteer with First Baptist Church, her local senior community, voter registration drives and The Prattville Spinner Club, a women’s service organization. Organizers ready to revive Memorial Drive Business Merchants group By Valerie J. Morgan

A

s Memorial Drive undergoes a makeover with street improvements, DeKalb County leaders are hoping that businesses in the Stone Mountain area will become part of the transformation. State Rep. Michele Henson, D-87, DeKalb County CEO Burrell and County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton recently hosted a breakfast for businesses to come together to learn more about the formation of a merchants group. The group is one that Henson says she hopes will be the lightning rod to fight crime, clean up the area and attract more businesses to the area. “We want to hear your concerns and give you a chance to ask questions,” Henson told the packed crowd who attended the April 26 meeting held at the Chick-fil-A on Memorial Drive. “We have many of the county officials here to answer your questions.” Henson, who chairs the Pride Rings in Stone Mountain (PRISM) community group, is pushing for more community involvement in light of a brutal rape that took place Feb. 26 at St. Timothy United Methodist Church on Memorial Drive where

State Rep. Michele Henson

Henson holds the monthly PRISM meetings. The merchants raised several concerns with police officials attending the meeting, including ways to tackle loitering and littering in certain areas along the thoroughfare. Andrew Baker, the county’s acting director of Planning and Sustainability, said DeKalb is making changes to reflect its partnership with businesses and residents in the community. “Code enforcement is now called code enforcement,” said Baker. “We made that change because as neighbors, we really don’t want to put our neighbors in jail. We just want those who have made violations to clean up or take care of whatever problem they might have.

We’re training and cross-training our officers to better work in the community.” Elizabeth Tyler, who owns A Stitching Time Saves 9 in Decatur, said she is glad to see the rekindled interest in Memorial Drive. She said she attended the meeting because she wants to relocate her alteration business there. “I moved here from New York in 1989 and many of the major stores like JC Penny was located on

Memorial Drive,” Tyler said. “They all moved, along with a lot of the big chain restaurants as the area changed. I would love to move my business to Memorial. It would be close to where I live.” Henson said organizers plan to hold another meeting and will contact those who attended and get the word out to other businesses. She and supporters personally called on merchants for the first meeting.

Last year, volunteers gave 19,912 hours of service to the hospital, which would equal about $159,000 of paid hours that the hospital was able to save, hospital officials said.

Albany State’s ‘Anointed Gospel Choir’ to perform at Antioch-Lithonia By Joshua Smith and Valerie J. Morgan LITHONIA—Antioch-Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church will welcome the Albany State University Gospel Choir on Saturday, May 14, 6 p.m., for an evening of traditional and contemporary gospel selections. “We love for college choirs to visit because it shows our youths and young adults another side—a better side,” said Ward. “With everything that you see on television, I think it’s important for our youths to see someone they can look up to that’s around their age.” Albany State’s choir, which touts itself as the “Anointed Albany State University Gospel Choir” on the university’s web site, is making a return appearance. The church has also welcomed Atlanta’s Spelman College and Howard University in Washington, D.C. previously. Pastor Ward said church member Arlene Allbrittin invited Spelman to visit and member Howard University came at the invitation of Makina Table, also a member of Antioch’s congregation. “Our ministry has bonded with these choirs. It’s not just performances,” Ward said. “Whatever the choirs need—whether it’s transportation or a meal after church—we

Albany State University Gospel Choir

try to accommodate them to the best of our abilities and do whatever it takes to get them here.” Pastor Ward has a special affinity for choirs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He sang in Atlanta’s Morehouse Glee Club when he attended the college there. He has made sure that his ministry at Antioch offers music ranging from classical to contemporary and traditional gospel. That diversity—and Pastor Ward’s relevant teachings—have attracted and kept many worshippers coming to Antioch. Pastor Ward said a number of Antioch’s members can trace their history with the 142-yearold church four generations, moving from the church’s former location in the city of Lithonia to its present location on Highway 124. The edifice on Highway 124 was built in 2004.

“One of the wonderful things about our new sanctuary is that it has the sound system of a concert hall,” said Pastor Ward. “People just love it.” Cassandra Breedlove, who attended Albany State and sings with the Georgia Mass Choir, is looking forward to hearing students from her alma mater perform once again at Antioch. “She’s excited about it. We have several alumni from Albany and they’ve all been saying how they’re looking forward to it,” he said. “I think the college choirs enjoy coming here because there are a lot of music majors in our congregation. We want the community to come out. They will enjoy the singing.” The concert is free. Antioch Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church is located at 2152 Rock Chapel Road (Highway 124, Turner Hill Road exit), Lithonia. 770-482-1277.

T

he Atlanta Symphony Associates (ASA) will wrap up its 41st annual Decorators’ Show House & Gardens tour this month. The show house tours, which began April 16, end on May 8. The new estate, Lotus House, was designed by William T. Baker, recipient of Classical America’s Arthur Ross Award in Architecture. The residence is located atop a rich wooded knoll on West Wesley Road, one of Buckhead’s most prestigious addresses. Lotus House reflects the multicultural traditions of its owners, who moved to Atlanta from their native India. With designer Baker’s Neoclassical expertise, the owners have created a home incorporating elements of their English and American architectural heritages. The 20,000-squarefoot estate includes two kitchens, a golf simulation room, home theatre, wine cellar, spa with beauty area for hairdressing, yoga and massage chamber and a flower potting and arranging area.
