Conyers arts council receives grant from Fox Theatre Institute The Fox Theatre Institute (FTI) has awarded more than $85,000 to four projects under its newly-created Urgent/Emergency Need Grant, a part of FTI’s expanded funding efforts to support historic Georgia theaters, and the Conyers Rockdale Council for the Arts (CRCA) is among the grant recipients. CRCA received an $11,348 grant to replace its 17-year-old HVAC unit in time for the theatre to continue its scheduled programming. CRCA, which opened to the public in October 2000, is home to dozens of productions each year. For the theater or historic performing arts venue to receive an Urgent/Emergency Needs Grant, the historic venue must have found operational needs that require immediate action to save the structure itself, or unanticipated delays that hindered the venue’s ability to maintain its current programming and economic health. The Urgent/ Emergency Need Grant is one of four grant funding categories through FTI – including Urgent/ Emergency Need, Historic Structures Studies or Planning, Technical Assistance and Services, and Preservation Grant – all of which allows up to $500,000 of much needed statewide grant subsidy. In addition to the CRCA, the following historic theaters or performing arts venues have been awarded Urgent/Emergency Needs Grant through FTI: • Festival Hall in Greensboro,

GA received $19,640 to replace its stage, which had become dangerous for performers. • DeSoto Theatre in Rome, GA, built in 1929, received $20,000 to upgrade its original fire safety features. • Theatre Albany, which opened in Albany, GA in 1934, received $34,393 to repair its façade. The building was recently damaged by severe tornadoes in early 2017. “The Fox Theatre Institute provides needed financial resources for historic theatres who have struggled to find partnering, supporting, or matching fund programs,” said Leigh Burns, director of the Fox Theatre Institute. “Currently, no other organizations in Georgia provide grant assistance specific to theater preservation, and notably direct funding that does not requiring a match. For many treasured Georgia historic landmarks, we are the only option to staying operational while making necessary repairs to ensure audience safety.” Since FTI services launched in 2008, it has supported 15 projects totaling more than $360,000. The Fox Theatre has committed more than $1 million to the overall program, including ‘Fox in a Box,’ a free interactive curriculum-based resource for elementary schools; Georgia Presenters, an innovative statewide talent booking consortium; and Preservation Grants to encourage preservation of historic theatres with outside funding not readily available elsewhere.

CEO, conditioned from page 3 same thing in DeKalb.” Thurmond said in a statement that he and county officials are working to address concerns: “I recently had a private meeting with the mother and father of a veteran who tragically lost his life after an encounter with DeKalb County Police. I promised the parents that DeKalb County would do more to protect and save the lives of residents with mental illnesses. “Under the direction of Assistant Chief Sonya Porter, who is responsible for police training, we convened a roundtable meeting of more than two dozen state, local and national mental health experts to discuss how to de-escalate confrontations and develop training recommendations and guidance for county police. “The mental health roundtable continues to meet to identify better ways to respond to situations and identify steps that are needed to save lives and to give residents with mental health issues the help that they need such as referrals and available resources for treatment. The goal is to peacefully resolve encounters by de-escalating a situation rather than using force. “The mother of the deceased veteran is scheduled to meet with the roundtable and share her experience.” Thurmond also stated that over half of DeKalb’s sworn officers have passed crisis intervention training. He said he plans to request funding in next year’s budget to continue the mental health roundtable and provide training and other resources to better respond to situations involving mental health issues. “The DeKalb County Police Department will welcome a meeting with Lt. Col. King to discuss his plan of action to help veterans who suffer from mental illness,” said Thurmond. “One life lost is one life too many.” King said Justice for Veterans is planning to honor military veterans on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, 1 p.m., outside the DeKalb County Courthouse in downtown Decatur.
