Kendrick Johnson’s parents to lead GABEO march

he parents of Kendrick Johnson, the black Valdosta, Georgia teen whose body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat at his school gym, will be the guests for a program and march hosted by the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials (GABEO) on April 5. As Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson commemorate the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. with GABEO, they also will remember their 17-year-old son whose mysterious death a year ago is now under investigation. This week, schoolmates of Kendrick Johnson and their parents were subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating the case. GABEO’s president, Rep. Tyrone Brooks, D-Atlanta, said he plans to join the Johnsons on April 4 at a march that will be held at the federal courthouse in Macon where the proceedings are under way. “We have been working with the Johnsons for over a year now on this case,” said GABEO’s president, Rep. Tyrone Brooks, D-Atlanta. “There are a lot of unanswered questions concerning the death of their son. We want justice for them.” Brooks said the Johnsons participated in GABEO’s annual march commemorating the anniversary assassination of King last year and it was decided that the couple would lead this year’s march. The Johnsons reported their son missing after he failed to come home from school. The teen was found the next day—Jan. 11, 2013—by students in a gym class who saw his feet in the mat. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office concluded Kendrick died by accident while reaching for a shoe. However, the Johnsons say there’s been a “coverup.” The couple had their son’s body exhumed last June and commissioned an independent autopsy, which attributed the teen’s death to “apparent non-accidental, blunt force trauma.” GABEO also is demanding justice— as it has for years now—for two black couples who were lynched by a mob of white men at the Moore’s Ford Bridge See Kendrick, page 6

Even though it’s close to spring, it feels a lot like Christmas in DeKalb County. That’s because four DeKalb high schools are state champions: Miller Grove, Tucker, Redan and St. Pius. “We work all year to get to that point, the one night where all the kids’ hard work and dedication pays off,” said Miller Grove Head Basketball Coach Sharman White. “We

Miller Grove dedicated its season to the memory of Terrell Coleman, a 15-year-old who died while playing in an AAU basketball game last fall. “We wore all black for Terrell early this season. Terell was always grinding with us, always working to be better. Job and resource fair set in DeKalb for seniors

T

By Valerie J. Morgan

he American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) will team up with the Georgia Department of Labor to host a job fair in DeKalb County for workers who are 50 and older. The job and resource fair will be held March 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Lou Walker Senior Center, 2538 Panola Road, in Lithonia. Labor officials and partner agencies working with the fair will provide tips on writing resumes, interview skills and other information needed to land a job. Those who attend the fair also will be able to get information on healthcare, housing and social media. Organizers say the job fair comes at a critical time. Recent statistics show the unemployment rate in the Atlanta region rose to 7.2 percent in January, up from 6. 8 percent the previous month. Tamika Conde’, project director for AARP’s employment services for seniors, said the increase in unemployment may be attributed to seasonal jobs ending. She said with the higher unemployment rates, seniors are challenged to find work as they join the crowded field of job seekers. “Many of the baby boomers

DeKalb History to present Swanton House for tour and lecture On March 29, 2 p.m., the DeKalb History Center will host a living history tour of the Benjamin Swanton House on March 29, 2 p.m., at 720 West Trinity Place, Decatur. The tour will be followed by a lecture given by local historian, Dr. George Coletti. The program, which is sponsored by the Georgia Humanities Council, is free and open to the public. The tour includes a visit to the cabin of Zenith Twilley, a free African-American woman who lived in DeKalb County in the 1850s and 1860s. Learn about her life and daily struggles working as a weaver, seamstress and washer woman. Also, meet Benjamin Swanton, who welcomes you into the oldest home in DeKalb County (circa 1825) where you learn about the early industries in the area and why people settled here. Owners of a tannery, brickyard, blacksmith shop, and grist mill, the Swantons were entrepreneurs whose daily lives were full of activity. Also meet Mary Gay, who worked tirelessly during the Civil War to support Southern troops. Her diary, “Life in Dixie During the War,” is a vivid account of the war years and Battle of Atlanta. At 3 p.m., George Coletti, local historian and author of Stone Mountain: The Granite Sentinel, will discuss DeKalb County during the Civil War. To RSVP for the tour and lecture, call 404-373-1088, extension 20 or email goldemund@dekalbhistory.org.

season, but we made it through a lot of adversity to get this championship. This is an awesome feeling. It’s really indescribable.” Miller Grove’s boys’ squad will be the special guests of the Atlanta Hawks when they take on the Denver Nuggets on March 15 and will be honored by state Senator Ronald Ramsey on March 18 at the State Capitol. The school has a pep rally planned for the team at the end of March. The AAAAA division was also claimed by Tucker High School girls’ basketball team when it defeated another squad in the county, defending champs Southwest DeKalb, 83 - 65. “Our championship represents the true meaning of teamwork, with a record of 30-0 in the region. We’ve had the talent here for years. We just had to get everybody on the same page with the same common goal. We did that this season,” said Tucker Head Coach Robin Potter. Potter has coached the team for 10 seasons. “It really hasn’t sunk in for me yet. I’m so happy for these girls. They worked all year long to be in this position.” Tucker players say there were favored to lose by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “They said we were favored to because Southwest had won the year before and one of their players even said in the paper that the difference between Tucker and Southwest was that they know how to win,” said Senior Erykah Davenport, who has committed to the University of Miami. “We just used it as motivation. We kept that chip on our shoulders the whole game and we wanted to beat them bad in every quarter.” Tucker’s counseling staff bought the team breakfast on March 12 to celebrate. The squad appeared on V-103’s Greg Street radio show on March 13. The team will be recognized at the city’s March 15 Chili Cook-off and a school pep rally with the Atlanta Hawks organization is set for March 21. Redan High also is basking in glory. The Raiders girls’ squad defeated Columbus High School 63-53 for the AAAA championship. This was the second basketball title for the girls’ squad in the school’s history. “Whether we bring in team members from the Atlanta Dream or bring in tutors, we are always looking for ways to uplift and motivate our kids to do better,” said Coach Jerry Jackson. “When you win state, it sets a precedent for future teams to follow and even try to do better. This is a great thing for our school and our community.”

Closing out DeKalb’s sweet night of victories at the Macon tournament was the AAA Champion St. Pius Golden Lions. They were the only team from the county to see a close game, defeating the Buford High School Wolves 48 – 45. “It was a real close one, especially at the end of the first quarter. We did a lot better in the second half and I’m just really happy for these girls. They really deserve this,” said Head Coach Kyle Snipes. “They all stayed focused and I’m glad we could win it for our seniors.” This was St. Pius’ second consecutive state title. competition is healthy. “It’s a really great feeling. In one championship you had two DeKalb teams battling for the state title in the girls’ tournament. If Stephenson would have beat Warner Robins, you would have had the same good situation happening on the boys side,” said Dunson. “We love it because no matter which squad took home the trophy, DeKalb County is winning.” Dunson says basketball programs will continue to flourish in the county as long as competition stays at this high level. “Redan’s girls’ title was the second in school history and the 11th for DeKalb County public school girls teams in the past seven seasons. Miller Grove has won the championship six years in a row. That’s unheard of. Tucker’s girls won their first championship in the team’s 70-year history. We are bringing up history makers in DeKalb,” said Dunson.

endorsements for re-election from President Obama in 2010 and 2012. “He (Johnson) has earned it. The Congressman was one of Georgia’s first federal lawmakers to endorse him (Obama) back in 2008 when he was a candidate for President. When others endorsed Hillary Clinton, Hank supported him,” Phelan said. Johnson, who is seeking his fifth term and facing Democratic challenger Thomas Brown, DeKalb County’s former sheriff, said he is honored by President Obama’s support. “I am honored by President Obama’s endorsement,” Johnson said. “My top priority in Congress is creating jobs in the Fourth District and working with the President to continue to grow our economy.” With Georgia and the Fourth Congressional District still facing higher unemployment rates than the rest of the nation, Johnson said he is focusing his campaign on economic issues. Johnson said he has helped bring more than $250 million to the district for schools, roads and police since he was elected in 2007. He said he also has worked to help secure more than $30 million for constituents seeking help with specific federal agencies. “I am proud of my strong record in Congress and look forward to meeting new voters and constituents and continuing to work for the people of this District,” Johnson said.

demonstrated leadership will pay off. “Every day I get up and fight for all Georgians who need access to affordable health care, quality education, decent jobs and livable wages,” said Dawkins-Haigler. “I’m running for re-election because I believe voters should trust in proven leadership. I encourage voters to get out to the vote and not sleep in this election.” Dawkins-Haigler is chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and the first ordained female clergy to be elected to the General Assembly. Adoma, who has never run for office, said she is seeking the seat because she believes the district needs new leadership. “People in the community have told me they want someone who will answer their calls and emails and be more accessible,” said Adoma, who serves as president of the Brooks Mill Homeowners Association in unincorporated Lithonia. “Residents say we need new leadership, someone who will truly listen to them and not just talk at them. I am ready to align with the people’s agenda and I will work hard for the voters” Adoma, who is active in the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, touts her work in the community and her business background as assets. “I have more than 10 years of volunteering. I’ve worked with nonprofits such as the United Way of Greater Atlanta. I know how to get different people to reach one common goal,” said Adoma, who owns two H&R Block tax agencies in Conyers with her husband, Osei Adoma, through their company, Adoma & Associates.

Her husband changed his surname to one of West African descent. They have been married 13 years and have four adult children and five grandchildren. Dawkins-Haigler said she is focused on her work at the Capitol more than anything. She says her focus will remain on the “public service” trail rather than a campaign trail. “My first priority is to the constituents of this district and to the 10 million people who live in it. I sponsored town halls and led press conferences about the importance of Medicaid expansion. I have championed for education by cosponsoring legislation that would allow parents the freedom to allow their children to attend any public school within their respective counties,” said Dawkins-Haigler. “During this session, I have held hearings for raising the minimum wage in Georgia and have been in the fight for voting rights for all. These are the type of things

I have to keep my focus on because the quality of life of the people in this district and state depend on it.” Dawkins-Haigler is married to U.S. Army Maj. David Haigler, Jr. They have four children and one grandchild.

ntioch-Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church will ordain Minister Frances Knight Pinckney on March 30. “I’m excited and ready to work with any of our ministries that need my help. I just want to serve the Lord,” said Minister Pinckney, who has been

a member of the Lithonia church since 1997. Pastor James C. Ward says he is proud of the church’s newest minister to be ordained under his leadership since he became the church’s senior pastor in 1995. Pastor Ward says Minister Pinckney was very disciplined during her three-year ministerial training journey and she will be rewarded with a great celebration that is planned in her honor. “We make this a big deal at our church and Minister Pinckney deserves just that. She has been steadfast, dedicated and very coachable during this process,” said Pastor Ward. “If you could compare it to anything in the secular world, this is like a lawyer passing the bar or a medical student completing their internship to become a

full-fledged doctor.” Pinckney went through hours of rigorous course work that included biblical knowledge and interpretation, counseling members in need, and delivering an initial sermon. Pastor Ward says most of the education is “onthe job-training.” Now with the completion of that training, Pinckney may preach, perform baptisms, administer communion, and conduct funerals and other functions as an ordained minister, Pastor Ward said. The ordination service is one of several celebrations Antioch-Lithonia has planned for March. Pastor Ward also celebrated his 19th pastoral anniversary this month and a three-day revival is planned with guest revivalist, Pastor Micheal Benton, of Fairfield Baptist Church. Pastor Ben will lead

the revival March 19-21. The ordination service for Minister Pinckney will be held on Sunday, March 30, at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. The James C. Ward Chorale will sing. Rev. Cecil Poe, an associate pastor at Antioch-Lithonia, will be the featured speaker. Following the service, the church plans to host a book signing for Pickney. Pickney has authored a book entitled “It’s Time for A Spiritual Checkup.” She says the book makes a comparison between the check-up you get at a doctor’s office and the importance of keeping your spirit just as healthy. Antioch-Lithonia Missionary Baptist Church is located at 2152 Rock Chapel Road, Lithonia. The community is invited to join in the celebration.

Ray of Hope’s Cynthia Hale Speaks Out on ACA I am a faith leader. My job is to develop and provide a God-inspired moral compass that helps my congregants, community and colleagues live healthy, healing, responsible lives. I am called to serve, teach and provide a daily, prayerful example, of what is fair and equitable….and right. The aspect of my ministry that allows me to bring healing to my community is what Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale I enjoy the most. Ray of Hope Christian Church has endeavored to be a place of health and healing in this community, particularly through our Hope through Health Clinic for the past 11 years. I have become aware of the response in our community to the Affordable Care Act and new, quality health insurance programs now available to all. I am concerned that many of us are not taking

advantage of a reformed healthcare system that has been historically seeded in inequitable access for millions. I am perplexed when I speak to people who still are not aware that they are now entitled to unprecedented healthcare benefits like prescription drugs, preventive care, and insurance acceptance no matter their pre-existing condition. Though as a congregation, we have tried to do our part, now access to affordable healthcare has been made available far and wide, nationally, and still….we are not moved. Recently, Get Covered America and Operation Hope hosted a Health Insurance Marketplace event that was marketed heavily to the local African American community. They were out in full force with information about financial assistance, presentations that described each new benefit, and licensed, in-person assisters who know every plan inside-out. And though I am pleased with the 40 plus people who walked away with new health insurance coverage, I am also disheartened that more people did not show up to explore their new right. We talk a lot about civil rights, we pray and fight

for them. But we are not moved when they come? Are we so uncomfortable with fairness that we don’t see it and seize it when it arrives? Education, housing, and healthcare are the pinnacles of our mission here, and access to healthcare is a civil right we embrace. You must embrace it, too. If you were sitting in my congregation today, I would invite you to embrace your right to affordable healthcare insurance. I would tell you to protect yourself from the vulnerabilities that inevitably come to each of us. I would implore you to not let this opportunity pass you by, and I would beg you to seize your civil right – one for which we’ve prayed, marched and fought. You don’t have to be a Ray of Hope congregate to take advantage of our ministries, resources, or healthcare programs. But you do have to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace to secure your healthy selves and fulfill the promise of a basic, civil equality that was not always ours for the taking – until now. Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale, Senior Pastor Ray of Hope Christian Church, Decatur

City of Atlanta honors memory of Civil War hero to all faiths City of Atlanta officials joined the Hibernian Benevolent Society of Atlanta to mark the 150th anniversary year of Father Thomas O’Reilly’s heroic civic and ecumenical actions. The city honored O’Reilly this month with a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the year Atlanta was ravaged by the Civil War. During the 1864 siege of Atlanta, O’Reilly, a young Catholic Priest from Ireland, ministered to soldiers of the North and South. He became a hero to both sides and to civilians of all faiths while hearing confessions, writing letters, saying Mass and performing last rites and working tirelessly. The Union Army, under the command of General William Sherman, planned to burn much of Atlanta so that the city could not aid the Confederate War effort. This was to be completed before Union forces left on

their destructive “March to the Sea.” Father O’ Reilly requested of Union General Slocum, a direct subordinate of General Sherman, and his staff that the Atlanta City Hall, the Court House, and an adjoining residential neighborhood be spared. In addition, O’Reilly requested that five of Atlanta’s churches be left in tact. Since all these structures were wooden, a fire at one could easily spread to the others. As a result of O’Reilly’s actions, Atlanta City Hall, the Court House and the following churches survived: St. Philip’s Episcopal (now Cathedral of St. Philip), Trinity Methodist, Second Baptist (now Second Ponce de Leon Baptist), Central Presbyterian, and Father O’Reilly’s church, Immaculate Conception Catholic (now the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception).

DeKalb County and the Development Authority of DeKalb County (DADC ) signed an intergovernmental agreement to designate the DADC as the economic development agency for the county. A document signing ceremony was held March 13 at the Kensington MARTA Station at 3350 Kensington Rd, Decatur, the site of a proposed transit-oriented development. In addition to its current responsibilities, the DADC will implement economic development programs, such as New Market Tax Credits, small business/entrepreneur loans, and manage the Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund Grant program, among others. The new DADC will manage DeKalb’s Tax Allocation Districts, develop a marketing and branding plan, and create a new business alliance to support the greater business community. “This is the new way of undertaking economic development. We are stronger when we work together in partnership,” said Interim CEO Lee May. “Other local jurisdictions enjoy widespread success with this model and they are realizing exciting results. County will be elevated as a major competitor on the local and national stage.” County Commissioner Larry Johnson, who serves as presiding officer of the Board of Commissioners, said the new partnership will be the engine to expand economic development in DeKalb. “This partnership gives DeKalb County the tools it needs to ensure the full implementation of the

comprehensive economic development strategic plan that we’ve been working on,” said Johnson. “Now, the DADC will have the funding and the staff to take the lead on stimulating new investments, expanding existing industry, and developing sustainable economic strategies for balanced growth.” Vaughn Irons, chairman of the DADC, praised the partnership. “The business community and

government have always enjoyed a synergy mutual success, but government doesn’t really create jobs by itself. However, government is responsible to create a business friendly environment and that is what is happening here and now,” said Irons. The DADC will eventually employ a staff of 12, with an annual budget of $1.25 million for the first five years. The team will be led by a president, but until a national search for a qualified candidate can be completed, the Board of Directors of the DADC will act in that capacity. The DADC will deliver quarterly reports to the DeKalb Board of Commissioners in a public forum on the progress of the implementation of work, and the status of economic development activities. The intergovernmental agreement with the DADC is the latest in a series of developments designed to streamline operations and create a business-friendly environment in DeKalb County. DeKalb County, for its part, has been improving efficiency in the build permit division, reducing the timeframe for the approval process.
