Miller Grove’s Sharman White named USA Today’s “Coach of the Year” By Joshua Smith
DEKALB COUNTY–Miller Grove High School’s Coach Sharman White and his six-time champion basketball team are basking in glory again. White was named USA Today’s “Coach of the Year” this week. “I found out a couple of weeks ago, but they swore me to secrecy like the President was coming. It was pretty crazy to keep the secret,” White told On Common Ground News. “I don’t know if USA Today will be sending an award or anything. They haven’t told me anything like that yet.” Last year, White was named Georgia’s “Coach of the Year” by the Atlanta Tip Off Club. He has been the basketball coach and athletic director at Miller Grove since the school opened in 2005. This year, White coached his team to a state record sixth consecutive title. Winning was all the more Terrell “Too Tall” Coleman, who emotional for the Wolverines, who collapsed and died during an all-star dedicated their season to freshman game.

White said the recognition from USA Today is a great individual award, but he could never achieve such heights
without a great supporting cast. “The players put in countless hours and the parents have to make that sacrifice for us to keep them, sometimes all night. My coaching staff is second to none. We have had nothing but support from DeKalb County. It really does take the whole community working together as one,” said White. “The reason we have become a powerhouse in a small amount of years is because all the players and their families bought into what I was saying to them.” White said he held a meeting with players on April 4 to prepare for next season. “As soon as the kids get back from spring break, we’ll be back at it. We’ll be back in the gym and the weight room, working out and conditioning to try to do it all over again,” said White. “One day, I would like to be coaching on the college level, but right now, all my focus is on Miller Grove. We have more work to do here.”

Gallery at South DeKalb Mall’s movie theatre closes
A
By Valerie J. Morgan
fter making a comeback seven years ago, the Gallery at South DeKalb Mall’s movie theater has closed. The South DeKalb Stadium12 theatre shut down over a month ago, leaving the 42,000-square-foot big box empty, mall officials confirmed this week. “We’ve been talking to other possible tenants,” said Tene Harris, the mall’s general manager. “Obviously, our first choice would be to replace it with another movie theatre because the space is already suited for entertainment. But it could be converted for another use. We would just have to look and see what works.” The South DeKalb movie theater has experienced several transitions over the years. In the early 1990s when it was a 24,000-square-foot theatre, the facility was closed for years in disrepair.
Photo by Glenn L. Morgan/OCG News
The mall, which opened in 1968, launched a redevelopment program in 1998 after DeKalb County government approved a $2.8 million tax package to help fund a $13 million movie theater. Then-mall owners O’Leary Partners and Magic Johnson Theatres had planned to build a 12-screen cinema at the mall, but that deal fell through. In April 2007, American Screen Works built a
42,000-square-foot cinema with stadium seating, digital sound, advanced ticket pick-up and an enhanced food and beverage menu on the back side of the mall. The movie complex also included a jazz bar for adults. Eight months later, in Nov. 2007, the cinema changed hands becoming the Galaxy Funplex South DeKalb, Harris said. Next, Tennessee-based Big Cinemas Management took over and began managing the South DeKalb Stadium 12 theatre. Harris acknowledged the theatre has had difficulty attracting a steady base of customers. “No business can stay open without the support of the community,” said Harris. DeKalb Commissioner Larry Johnson, who serves as presiding officer of the Board of Commissioners, said he plans to do everything possible to assist the mall in making sure the community is well served.

The DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs Department will host the Summer Food Service Program, June 2 – Aug. 1, as part of an ongoing effort to ensure school children have nutritious meals during the summer. Funding for the Summer Food Service Program is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and targets children under age 18. “This is a valuable program for our children. Research shows that many children may only eat one healthy meal a day, and that is at lunch time during the school year,” said Interim CEO Lee May. “The main goal of this program is to ensure children are getting nutritious
meals, even though school is not in session.” Agencies with summer camps that are interested in becoming a site for the program should call Rose Myrick at 678-698-1114. To qualify as a site, 50 percent of the children served must meet the income guidelines for free and reduced price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are members of households that receive food stamps or Aid for Dependent Children (AFDC) assistance automatically qualify. The deadline to apply for the Summer Food Program is Friday, May 9. Applications for the program are available online at www.dekalbcountyga.

8 to turn down the church’s application. Commissioner JaNice Van Ness, who owns the private Peachtree Academy, abstained from voting. The board denied the application, even though the Rockdale Planning Commission and county staff had recommended approval. Nesbitt said he voted no because he did not want to set up “interference” with local enterprises and competitors. “These decisions aren’t easy decisions, but you have elected us to make tough decisions,” Nesbitt said. Oden said he was concerned about doing what is equitable, pointing out that churches do not pay property taxes and businesses do. “This is not to send a message to churches that we don’t like churches,” Oden said Paige Rogers, who is Ebenezer’s church administrator, said she doesn’t
understand how the board reached its decision. “None of what they addressed has anything to do with the codes and their decision should have been based on what the county codes say,” said Rogers. “From what I understand, we have 30 days to appeal to the Superior Court and that is what we’re going to do.” Rogers said the church applied for the special use permit because there is a greater need now for full-time preschool programs. “We have operated our part-time daycare for 26 years. It was primarily for stay-at-home moms who wanted to bring their children a few hours every day. Now, moms are working full time and need full-time care,” said Rogers. “We want to be able to accommodate them.” Ebenezer now serves about 40 children ages 1 to 5. The church has the capacity to serve 70 children, Rogers said.

Mount Carmel student takes state with “Juicy Lips” project
D
By Joshua Smith
iamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but for Jennifer Rice, it’s lip gloss. Rice, an eighth grade student at Mount Carmel Christian School in Stone Mountain, won first place for her “Juicy Lips” science project at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in March. “I wanted to do a project that would benefit young ladies in my age group,” said 13-year-old Jennifer Rice. “Lip gloss is a product pretty much all of us girls use or have used. With this project, I’ve created some sufficient, healthy, money-saving alternatives.” Max Factor, a Proctor & Gamble company, invented lip gloss in 1930 to make lips shiny and glossy for films. For her “Juicy Lips” project, Rice surveyed girls from Mount Carmel and Bethune Middle School for research. “The gloss was made from natural oils and beeswax through a chemical process called emulsification. Glosses were made using different levels of beeswax. Varying the levels of waxes,
Jennifer Rice won first place for her “Juicy Lips” science project.
changed the properties of the lip gloss,” said Rice. “Students made observations about the look, smell, feel and taste, to pick their favorite lip gloss on a fivepoint scale. Vanilla, which used half the original amount of beeswax, was the overall favorite.” Rice says her hypothesis was right. She predicted that decreasing the beeswax ingredient decreases the
thickness of the lip-gloss product and would be a winner among testers. The decrease in thickness made the vanilla flavor the favorite, as Rice predicted. Other flavors Rice made were cocoa, coconut and honey. Jennifer’s mother, Dr. Angela Butler-Rice, M.D., said the entire process was exciting and somewhat frustrating.
“I tell all my children that they can do anything through Christ, so to see Jennifer taking on chemistry at such an early young age and coming up with this whole concept makes me so proud I could burst,” Dr. Rice said. She and her husband, Kenneth, have another daughter, 10-year-old Dora, and a 7-year-old son Kenneth Daniel Rice. When Jennifer isn’t coming up with cool cosmetics, she’s enjoying cheerleading, acting, singing, dancing, shopping, soccer, running track, swimming, tennis, volleyball, playing the flute and sewing. “Jennifer is so impressive in and out of the classroom. She really gives everything she does 110 percent. So while I was extremely proud, I can’t say I was surprised to see her reach this level,” said Mount Carmel Principal Tracy Moore. “She used beeswax and essential oils to make her product. She determined that her lip-gloss was marketable and helpful to the environment and cosmetic industry; and Jennifer gave science “girl power” when she won first place.”
CHASE joins Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League Citizens for a Healthy and Safe Environment (CHASE) has joined the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL), a regional environmental justice non-profit organization. The link with the multi-state organization will give CHASE greater capacity to defend DeKalb County residents from toxic air pollution, CHASE leaders say. “We will continue to fight for environmental justice to stop energy corporations from bringing industrial projects to our communities that threaten the public health of people in Lithonia,” said CHASE President Renee Cail. CHASE was founded in July 2010 by local residents opposed to a biomass power plant proposed by Green Energy Partners.
“CHASE has done well, focusing its efforts on preventing the development of a biomass gasification burning electric plant located on Rogers Lake Road in Lithonia,” said the Rev. Charles Utley, campaign director for BREDL. “The plant has not been built, and it’s not too late. We must remain steadfast in our goal.” Dr. Darren Harper, a medical doctor and member of CHASE, spoke about the negative health impacts of biomass plants. According to a BREDL study, the proposed biomass gasification plant would be like adding 16,491 cars on the roads in South DeKalb, Harper said. “We are concerned about the residents of Lithonia who are suffering with respiratory illnesses, fighting stenches from the landfills and facing toxic emissions
Police seeking help in finding fatal hit-and-run driver Police are seeking help from the community in locating Concepcion Cruz, the driver of a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed 2-year-old Caleb Lindsey. DeKalb County Police named Cruz the suspect in the April 5 incident on April 10 at a press conference. Witnesses said Cruz was driving a white pickup, racing through the parking lot of the Walmart on Tucker Norcross when he struck Caleb and his 4-year-old sister Meyaria, but never stopped. Mother of the children, Vashiti Lindsey, said she screamed at the top of her lungs for Cruz to stop. Vashiti was not Concepcion Cruz injured in the incident. Other witnesses told investigators that the hit-and-run driver drove up on the curb and struck the children, stopped a few feet away, threw a beer bottle out of the window and left the scene. Police said Cruz, 57, is a resident alien from El Salvador and they believe he may be trying to escape back to El Savador to avoid arrest. They have placed Cruz on the do not fly list. Agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are now involved in the search. Surveillance video showed Cruz driving a white Toyota Tacoma with a camper on the back during the incident. Cruz’s truck was found in Gwinnett County on April 9. A search warrant and arrest warrants are being prepared. If you have any information on the incident or the whereabouts of Cruz, call 404-577-TIPS. You can remain anonymous and still receive a reward for the information that can lead to the successful arrest and prosecution of Cruz. The family has setup a website, www.ourangelcaleb.com, to assist with funeral expenses.
from trucking and gravel companies,” Harper said. “We do not need another smokestack in DeKalb County.” BREDL has helped organize chapters in communities across Georgia since 2002, and continues working across the state to protect water, air and environmental quality. In March, BREDL celebrated its 30th anniversary. The League, which has incorporated more than 100 chapters across the region, has won environmental justice campaigns in six states stopping nuclear waste sites, hazardous waste dump facilities, and asphalt and other polluting industrial plants in rural and lowincome areas and communities of color across the Southeast.

Sea of Red Georgia Red Hatters convene for annual tea By Joshua Smith
COVINGTON—The Red Hat Society—those women who love red hats big and small—convened for the Covington chapter’s Annual Tea and Luncheon at the Newton County Recreation Center. The Covington chapter, known as “The Sophisticated Red Hatters of Turner Lake,” welcomed about 300 women to the event. Red Hatters from Decatur, Lithonia, Stone Mountain, Covington, Conyers, McDonough, Jonesboro, College Park, and even as far as Augusta came to the April 8 event to laugh, fellowship and enjoy each other’s company. “Every year, the tea gets bigger and bigger and we love that because the tea gives us a chance to have fun, fellowship, share ideas and uplift each other,” said Joanne Doute-Cooper, the chapter’s Communications Manager. “We also get the chance to share with each other what other chapters have going on, like community service projects.” The Red Hat Society was founded in 1998 as a social organization for women ages 50 and beyond. Now, however, the organization opens its doors to younger women through the “Pink Hatters” program. Women at the 10th annual tea enjoyed quiches, a variety of tea sandwiches, scones with lemon curd, brownies, lemon bars and Victorian cake. The women kicked off the event by dancing to Pharrell Williams’ smash hit, “Happy.” They enjoyed a fashion show, hat contest and a dramatization on the life of Madam C.J. Walker,
performed by members of the Dramatic Arts Productions theater group. Lithonia hatter Hamidah Abdullah also performed an original song, “We Are the Red Hat Ladies.” “This has been such a rewarding experience because the women are so diverse and come from so many different walks of life. I have gone through blood clot surgeries and wrote two books. I know I wouldn’t have been able to make it through those trials without the support of my husband and these beautiful ladies,” said Urenná Crawford, the tea’s self-proclaimed Mistress of “Cheeremoney.” “This group connects and supports women as they pursue fun, friendship, freedom and fulfillment in life.” The first “Red Hat Tea” was informally held on April 25, 1998 when founder Sue Ellen Cooper of California presented her friend, Linda Murphy, with a big red hat along with the poem, “Warning,” (by Jenny Joseph) on Murphy’s 50th birthday. The two women were joined by a few friends who went out for tea wearing red hats. Today, there are hundreds of chapters in many countries throughout the world. Each chapter has a queen and all members belong to The Queen’s Royal Court. Each lady selects her own royal title. Some doctors even suggest that ladies participate in The Red Hat Society to remain active and prevent depression. “Today, we honor queens in the community. We are honored to have so many beautiful, strong women with us here today,” said Covington Chapter

Queen “Mum” Lady Paulette Graves. “Although the main purpose of The Red Hat Society is for ladies to have fun, it is still very important that we keep a good image in society and also to be kind and helpful to each of our Red Hat sisters and others. Not only do Red Hatters
want to have a good image locally, but we represent an international group of ladies.” Want to join? The International Red Hat Society can be contacted online at www.redhatsociety.com for information regarding locating open chapters.

Dunkin’ Donuts breaks ground on Wesley Chapel location By Valerie J. Morgan
South DeKalb community leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony today for the new Dunkin Donuts that is under construction at 2555 Wesley Chapel Road near I-20. The location is the former site of the boarded-up Three Dollar Café. Salman Badruddin, the franchisee who is developing the store through Sahil Enterprises, said he expects to open between June and July. DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson, who led the groundbreaking ceremony, said Badruddin worked closely with the community on the project. “This has been a collaboration that has received support from the community and myself,” said Johnson. “It is just one of the many projects and improvements that we have planned to spur economic development in this area as part of our Renaissance project.” The 3,400-square-foot store will include a stateof-the-art Wi-Fi café, drive-through window and an outdoor sitting area for customers. Badruddin said the Dunkin Donuts restaurant will occupy 2,000 square feet of the space. The restaurant will offer Dunkin Donuts’ well-known menu of sweets, but also breakfast and lunch sandwiches, teas,

coffees, lattes and other beverages. A 1,400-square-foot space adjoining the store will be available for lease, Badruddin said. “We’re looking for a quality tenant to join us,” said Budruddin. The Wesley Chapel Dunkin Donuts will be Badruddin’s seventh location. He said he
opened his first on Memorial Drive in 1997. In South DeKalb, he also owns the location on Panola Road, which was formerly a Starbucks café. Badruddin said the new store will create about 10 jobs. Badruddin said he is looking forward to the South DeKalb community supporting the new store.

Simply Sassy salon makes fairy tale prom for three high school girls For many high school students, prom is an epic event. But for some, the cost to attend that special dance is more than their families can afford. One DeKalb County salon reached out to three local high school girls to help them make that fairytale night a reality. “We’ve been here eight months and we want to give back to the Lithonia community, especially our youth,” said Timmeia Wilcoxson of Simply Sassy Hair Salon. “Whether the night signifies the end of their high school experience or it is
simply the marvel of dressing up and enjoying classic dance themes, prom is a rite of passage every girl deserves.” With the help of the non-profit, Operation Prom, Wilcoxson and her team of stylists provided hair services, as well as a brunch for the young ladies, who are seniors at Newton County High School.
