“Keep your children on the ‘GOOD FOOT!’”

C

hildren's Foot care is essential to the proper development and care for life performance, from infancy throughout adulthood. In the field of Podiatry, children’s feet care weighs more during the first year of a child’s life due to development. Medically, the human foot is complex, due to the numerous bones, blood vessels, nerves, etc. that contribute to development of the foot. Proper foot care and healthy feet can be attributed to proper growth development, shoe fitting, cleanliness and care of feet, treatment for injuries, infections and feet abnormalities. Early detection of problems, during development can prevent more serious foot problems or catch foot development problems early.

Foot Growth Development

Normal foot developments in infancy and toddlers can be attributed to the following tips: • Check feet regularly for abnormalities • Make sure socks, booties, bed clothing, clothing allows for extra space for feet to straighten out • Allow baby and/or toddler to walk bare feet as a form of exercising feet • Use tickling and playful games with baby to encourage stretching and flexing foot muscles Proper Shoe Fitting Children’s bones in feet are very sensitive in the growth process; therefore fitting of shoes during child’s growth is very important to development and prevention of foot abnormalities. Normally,

children bones do not finish closing until approximately between ages 15-17 in boys and 13-15 in girls. Knowing when to place children in shoes is just as important as the type of shoes. It is recommended that a child’s feet get measured every six to eight weeks, because their feet can grow on average, two full sizes a year until the age of four. When fitting children with shoes it is important to allow at least one finger’s width from the end of the longest toe, for shoe purchases and growth. The width of the shoe is just as important in fitting to ensure all of the toes lie flat.

Care of Feet

The care of feet is very important in children development. Many times children in an earnest to play are resilient to conditions that may pose a problem if untreated, i.e., open sores, cuts, wounds, scrapes, etc. Infections to damaged tissue, bones, muscles are just a few problems that can hinder proper foot development with long term affect. Watching children’s feet, with application of appropriate and timely medical care is imperative for proper development in children. Children who engage in sports at an early age require even more attention and suggested professional observation through feet development.

Common Abnormalities

Flat Feet and Ingrown Toe Nails, are a couple of conditions that require professional medical attention in children development: Flat Feet can be apparent at birth or it may not show up until years later. Most children with flat foot have no symptoms, but some have one or more of the following symptoms: Pain, tenderness, difficulty with shoes, outward tilting of heel, cramping in foot, leg and knees, or reduced energy when participating in physical activities. In diagnosing this problem the surgeon will conduct an exam with X-rays to determine the deformity. Treatments can range from non-surgical treatments, such as custom made orthotics to surgery, such as flat foot correction, to obtain normal foot function.

Ingrown Toe Nails can occur in children from sports activities to foot activity. The condition is the same in adults and children and occurs when the corner of the toenail cuts into the skin. The condition is considered very painful and requires immediate relief, through removing all or part of the nail, to allow room for correction and relief of pain.
