Let’s Move! We must pitch in to help our First Lady fight childhood obesity
By Valerie J. Morgan
F
Editor
irst Lady Michelle Obama grew up during a time when families spent time around the dinner table, children played outdoors and eating out was a special treat. During her Feb. 9 visit to Atlanta, she spoke of her own life as a youngster to drive home her point that America must get back to basics in order to become more healthy. Mrs. Obama shared a story about her grandmother’s response when she and her brother, as youngsters, begged for takeout burgers for lunch one day. They were shocked when their grandmother finally agreed and gave them their treat: “As we sat excitedly waiting for our burgers— and I swear this is true—my grandmother brought out a can of peas and much to our horror, she promtly served us two scoops each,” Mrs. Obama said. The estimated 5,000 who packed North Point Community Church in Alpharetta where the First Lady spoke exploded with laughter. When Mrs. Obama recalled how kids didn’t fill up on a bunch of snacks as they do today, she reminded 6 | Top DOCS
me of how I grew up as the eldest in a family of six kids: “I didn’t know a single child in my neighborhood who was allowed to eat what they wanted whenever they wanted. And if you wanted a snack, you had to ask permission and whatever you got was limited,” she said. Mrs. Obama struck another chord—and received thunderous applause from the audience—when she summed up how Saturdays in America were once spent: “And when those Saturday morning cartoons were finished, TV was done. That was it for the day. Once American Bandstand and Soul Train were over, you headed outside to play. And you’d better not come home until dinner,” she said, again drawing laughter from the audience. Mrs. Obama shared her stories as she marked the first anniversary of her “Let’s Move” national initiative aimed at fighting childhood obesity with good nutrition, exercise, access to more fresh produce, and healthy checkups. She came to Georgia because the state boasts the second-highest rate of child obesity in the country —an issue that is a priority for Congressman Hank Johnson, whose Fourth District includes parts of DeKalb, Gwinnett and Rockdale counties. I was able to attend Mrs. Obama’s speech, thanks to Johnson, who invited several
other community stakeholders interested in promoting “Let’s Move.” Johnson knows all too well the importance of good nutrition and access to good health care. He is battling Hepatitis C, which requires ongoing medical care, a regimen of good nutrition and exercise.
Congressman Hank Johnson “The ‘Let’s Move’ campaign is ambitious, but I think that it’s important and achievable,” said Johnson, who also is a staunch supporter of President Obama’s healthcare reform. “The ‘Let’s Move’ program will give families and community leaders what they need to fight obesity. I believe we can solve this epidemic within a generation.” I agree with Congressman Johnson. And because I am battling Type 2 diabetes and many of the issues that arise from the disease, I’m motivated more than ever to do my part to promote the First Lady’s campaign. Across the country,
children are facing chronic obesity-related health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma. One in every two children in our nation is overweight or obese. “The American Academy of Pediatrics is now urging doctors to not just screen kids for obesity, but to actually write out prescriptions for exercise and healthy eating,” Mrs. Obama said. The screenings, she said, are fully covered by insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Mrs. Obama is not only encouraging doctors to do their part, but she is urging us all to get involved—whether it’s starting a community garden, eating more fruits and vegetables or participating in an exercise program. When families commit to an activity five days a week for six weeks—such as walking to school together or riding bikes or taking the stairs instead of the elevator—you can get an award from President Obama (www.presidentschallenge. org). Through “Let’s Move,” Mrs. Obama is championing change that will bring more grocery stores to communities that need fresh produce at more affordable prices. She is pushing for more nutritious lunches in schools, and for wellness visits. For more information on the First Lady’s campaign, visit www.letsmove.gov.

11 superfoods to boost your health in 2011 By Valerie J. Morgan
W
hat are superfoods and what are the benefits of them? Health experts define superfoods as a special category of foods found in nature with “super” amounts of nutrients. Health experts say superfoods included as part of your diet can have a profound impact in making you feel and look better. You should consult with your physician or health advisor on which ones are best for use and how much you need because each person’s body is different—and so are their health goals. Take fitness guru Carla Fields, owner of Carla Fields Fitness, Inc. in Decatur, for example. Fields says she enjoys several superfoods, but because she works out regularly, two are at the top of her list. “I’m really big on sweet potatoes and brown rice,” said Fields. “Both provide long-lasting energy, which is what you need when you’re working out.” Superfoods can lower blood pressure, stabilize blood sugars, reduce inflammation, improve skin elasticity and hair growth, increase energy levels and even ward off cancer and other diseases. Superfoods range from familiar green vegetables that have been around and grown locally for ages to exotic fruits and produce that are now being imported from other countries as they have gained popularity in the U.S. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular superfoods that our Top Docs health experts say are their favorites, along with our own research. You’ll find superfoods on this list at your local grocery store, farmer’s market or health store:
Apples remain one of the best superfoods on earth. The saying that “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is scientifically proven. Apples are one of the most favorite superfoods mentioned by doctors. Apples have fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants that fight free radicals that cause aging, disease and illness.
Kale is a dark, leafy green that can be enjoyed as a raw salad or as a cooked vegetable, soup, side dish or main dish. Kale is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin B and calcium. It relieves depression and fights heart disease, cancer, cataracts and even dementia. Blueberries are tasty and packed with vitamin C and copper. Blueberries are called the “brain’s food” because they help with memory loss and prevent Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, some forms of blindness, urinary tract infections and even reduce cholesterol. They are beneficial in treating and preventing a variety of cancers. Brown rice is an excellent source of magnesium, iron, selenium, manganese, and the vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6. It is a good source of dietary fiber, protein, and inositol hexaphosphate, which has been shown to demonstrate cancer prevention properties and may be useful to control blood glucose levels in Type 2 diabetes. Cacao beans (raw chocolate) contain one of the highest levels of antioxidants, exceeding red wine and green tea. Cacao beans also help reduce blood pressure and may promote good heart health. You can nibble bits of cacao or use it in drinks and recipes.
Almonds have a very high nutritive value since they contain copper, iron and vitamins, and are high in fiber. They are used as a remedy for anemia and constipation. Almond oil is used to treat all sorts of hair problems (untimely graying, fallout, dandruff, etc.). 8 | Top DOCS
Cinnamon can help stabilize blood sugars in people with Type 2 diabetes after just 1/8 of a teaspoon. Cinnamon also is an antioxidant and has antiinflammatory properties. It relieves arthritis, boosts cognitive function and memory and when added to food, it inhibits bacterial growth, making it a natural food preservative.
Chia seeds offer a healthy dose of omega-3s, which are found in oily fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines, and used to promote energy and cognitive functions. The seeds, which may be sprinkled on salads, soups, vegetables and muesli, also help you feel full and prevent illnesses such as cancer.
Mangosteen, a fruit native to Southeast Asia but also grown in warm climates such as Florida and California, has numerous health properties. Research scientists say mangosteen helps protect against arthritis, cancer, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease and kidney stones. Olive oil is packed with heart healthy monounsaturated fat as well as antioxidant polyphenols. Mediterranean diets, which are rich in vegetables and olive oil, can reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source for vitamin A, vitamin C, B vitamins, manganese, fiber, potassium and iron. Because of these properties, sweet potatoes are an excellent food for those suffering from arthritis, asthma, diabetes and emphysema. Families who spend time together stay on a healthy track By Dr. Stephanie Walsh, M.D Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
S
etting health goals that are fun for the entire family is a great way to help everyone stay on track. Start by picking an activity that you all want to do. Generally, most people want to be healthier, but actually doing it is the hardest part. So, make your goals very specific. Doing so will help you be more successful in achieving them. One way to increase your activity is plan to spend one hour on the weekends participating in that family activity. This can be walking or playing in the park on nice days, going to the skating rink on colder days or any other activity that your family enjoys. The important part is to commit to a fun physical activity.
10 | Top DOCS
Kids can set goals as well. Their goals should follow the same ideas– specific, realistic goals are the best. The best goal is one you think of yourself, but if you can’t decide, see the list below for suggestions: Parents should: • Make sure there is always fresh fruit in the house. • Have more family meals each week, but aim for a realistic number each week. • Do something fun and active with your family each week. • Take a cooking class and try new recipes at home. • Serve one vegetable with every meal. • Buy local vegetables and fruit.
For children: • Try one new fruit/vegetable every week. • Eat one fruit or vegetable every day. Play up the fun colors and textures that each food item has. • Play outside one hour or do one active game in the house every day. • Help your parents cook once a week. • Do a garden project: Plant a vegetable garden with your parents. Other options are tomatoes in a pot, herbs for cooking such as parsley, rosemary, thyme or basil. • Limit TV/computer time to one hour each day. Stephanie Walsh, M.D. is the Medical Director for Child Wellness at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Walsh leads the hospital’s efforts in preventing and treating childhood obesity. What is your A1c?
Is it normal? If you have Type 2 diabetes, you probably have heard about the A1c test. But do you understand what it means? The A1c test gives you a picture of your average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months through a percentage value. The higher your blood glucose levels from the A1c test, the more out of control your glucose level is. Levels can range from normal to as high as 25%, if diabetes is out of control for a long time. For people who do not have diabetes, the normal range of the A1c should be less than 6.5 percent. Those who have diabetes should aim for an A1c result of less than 7 %. The difference may seem small, but it’s important: Even a 1 % rise in A1c test results increases the risk of diabetes-related complications including eye disease, heart disease, nerve damage, kidney disease and stroke.

Doctors use the A1c test, along with daily blood glucose monitoring results, to develop the best plan to treat and manage diabetes. Some doctors also are using the A1c test to diagnose diabetes, not just manage it. Ideally, diabetics take the test every three months or so. If you don’t have diabetes, you may want to have this blood test performed. To watch your overall glucose control, your doctor should measure your A1c level at least twice a year. Here is an example of how an A1c test may be used: Bob D., age 49, has Type 2 diabetes. For the past seven years, he and his doctor have worked to control his blood sugar levels with diet and diabetes pills. Recently, Bob’s control has been getting worse, so his doctor said that Bob might have to start insulin shots. But first, they agreed that Bob would try an exercise program to try and improve control. After 3 months of sticking to his exercise plan, Bob returned to the doctor to check his blood sugar. It was near the normal range, but the doctor knew a single blood test only showed Bob’s control at that time. It didn’t say much about Bob’s overall blood sugar control. The doctor sent a sample of Bob’s blood to the lab for an A1c test to learn how well Bob’s blood sugar had been controlled, on average, for the past few months. The A1c test showed that Bob’s control had improved. With the A1c results, Bob and his doctor had proof that the exercise program was working. The test results also helped Bob know that he could make a difference in his blood sugar control. When you visit your doctor, ask if you need an A1c test. The test may help keep you on track for good health and help you to avoid serious diseases and threatening conditions.

THE FOOT DOCTOR
Dr. Naim Shaheed
W
hether it was treating young athletes at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta or helping senior citizens gain a better step into their backswing, Dr. Naim Shaheed, D.P.M., has crossed generations with one goal in mind: keeping people’s feet and legs healthy. As a podiatrist, Dr. Shaheed is owner of Ankle, Foot & Leg Specialists of Atlanta. Some may say the Atlanta native was destined to be a foot doctor. As a child, he would play around his grandmothers’ knees with his cousins. Little did he know diabetes would later turn both, his maternal and paternal grandmothers, into amputees with them losing their legs as a result of the disease. “That’s when I decided I wanted to become a podiatrist,” Dr. Shaheed said. “That had a profound impact on me. I wanted to help save people’s limbs.” Dr. Shaheed went on to become among the best in his field. He was selected by a panel to provide podiatry services for the Poly Clinic, evaluating and treating elite athletes who were participants in the 1996 Olympics. Dr. Shaheed is skilled in all aspects of foot surgery, including emergency room care. In fact, he was selected to teach and train other foot and ankle residents at DeKalb Medical Center. At the hospital’s Hillandale campus, he has served as chief of foot and ankle reconstruction. Dr. Shaheed said his practice has adopted a new focus in treating active seniors. “As baby boomers age, they’ve become more active now,” Dr. Shaheed said. “They’re running and playing tennis and participating in all sorts of sports. ” But even with his sports management services, Dr. Shaheed remains true to fighting the ravages of diabetes. The disease is the leading cause of extremity amputations in the United States, with more than 86,000 amputations occurring per year due to 14 | Top DOCS
the disease, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Rates are even higher in the African American community, said Dr. Shaheed who encourages regular checkups. “At the root of diabetes-related amputations is neglect. A lot of people ignore the signs ,whether it be sores, unhealed cuts, poor blood circulation, numbness, bruising, or swelling,” Dr. Shaheed said. “Early detection is the key. This means daily inspection of the feet and toes. ” Dr. Shaheed received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his medical degree from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami. Dr. Shaheed is certified by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is a member of the American and Georgia Podiatric Medical Associations, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, and he serves on the ethics committee of the Georgia Podiatric Medical Association. Dr. Shaheed is certified in diagnostic and operative Arthroscopic and Endoscopic surgery and works as a team physician for Morris Brown College NCAA Division I football team, and adjunct clinical instructor. He has published articles in the Journal of American Podiatric Medical Association and the Stepping Stone. Dr. Shaheed is affiliated with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He enjoys karate and scuba diving in his spare time. His favorite superfood is spinach. “It is a natural antioxidant that fights cancer. It’s great for muscle tissue,” Dr. Shaheed said. “I enjoy eating it sautéed with a little garlic, which also has health properties that are beneficial.” Ankle & Foot Specialist of Atlanta has two locations: 5910 Hillandale Dr., Stuite 102, Lithonia and at 550 Peachtree St., Stuite 1820, Atlanta. 770981-9011. re you looking to loose 25, 35, 40, or 100 pounds of fat? Well we have the program for you, ChiroHCG. Fast, long-term weight loss is just drops away! Lose 25-35 pounds In 42 days without shakes, exercise, or prepackaged food!
HCG is a natural hormone produced in the body. It has many functions and is used medically to treat a variety of conditions. It is the pregnancy hormone. This hormone allows the body to metabolize fat and use it as energy for both mother and fetus. This acts as a "fail-safe" mechanism when energy is needed immediately. For weight loss, we use only a very small amount of HCG to capitalize on this same mechanism.
Doctors designed the ChiroHCG Weight Loss Center!
Is HCG Safe?
As a ChiroHCG Weight Loss Center patient, you will experience rapid, healthy weight loss without hunger or carving. Our typical female client will lose between 25 and 35 pounds in 42 days and the typical male client will lose 30-40 pounds in 42 days. THESE RESULTS ARE TYPICAL! ChiroHCG works to boost your metabolism while preventing the body from going into starvation mode when consuming fewer calories than your need. This causes the body to burn fat for its energy instead of protein (muscle). The ChiroHCG Homeopathic formula has been specially blended to include homeopathic HCG and 3 other homeopathic compounds that aid in boosting your metabolism, suppressing cravings and to help detoxify your body. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is HCG and how does it work? 16 | Top DOCS
HCG is extremely safe. Women may experience very high levels during pregnancy with no adverse affects. Currently there are no known established clinical side effects to homeopathic remedies and medicines but as with any diet we recommend that you consult with a doctor before starting this diet and if you have any swelling, shortness of breath, dizziness or heavy redness consult a doctor or medical professional immediately. Where is the actual HCG manufactured and what are the quality control guidelines? Our exclusive homeopathic HCG formula is manufactured by our laboratory, which has years of experience and produces over 190 other naturopathic and homeopathic supplements. Unlike most other facilities that make homeopathic HCG, our production facility actually has a Naturopathic Medical Doctor on staff. All homeopathic formulas are registered with the FDA and are assigned an FDA Establishment number, which is dis-

played on the primary display panel of the label. Regular inspections by the FDA ensure compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs) for your safety. What sets ChiroHCG's product apart from the rest? You will not find this product being sold by other companies; it is a proprietary formula using more expensive quality ingredients that work. Our unique formula has many advantages like added natural appetite suppressants, energy supplements and more to help optimize this diet to the fullest. Customers report to us on a daily basis that they really do feel much better and have less hunger issues on this formula compared to the other prescription and homeopathic formulas available on the market. Our production facility maintains a Naturopathic Medical Doctor, who oversees all formulation, on staff. In addition to authoring 2 published books, this doctor has said: "Homeopathic HCG has been the greatest discovery of my weight loss career. I've never seen such rapid weight loss and long-term success than I have with this protocol. This is the best place to start for every overweight person." That being said, our ChiroHCG drops have the highest quality and diet effects.

My goal was to lose 15 lbs and I did it using ChiroHCG!!! I feel great! I lost 40 lbs in 42 days! What is the difference between prescription and nonprescription HCG? Prescription HCG is usually pure pharmaceutical grade HCG with no supporting elements to help it perform at 100%. Prescription HCG can be very effective but must be obtained and monitored only by a licensed medical physician. This makes it very expensive as well as being against the law to possess it without a prescription. Pure HCG is usually administered by injection only. Our non-prescription HCG formula is homeopathically derived and blended with other effective natural ingredients, which not only makes it legally obtainable without a prescription, but also makes it safer and more affordable, with the same average weight losses of prescription HCG Is HCG safe for men? The HCG hormone is naturally present in men. It is found in every human tissue, including males, pregnant women, and non-pregnant women. Men get even faster results and tend to lose more weight than women. The HCG diet is very low calorie, will I get hungry? It is common to feel mild hunger during the first few days. This will pass and by the second week you will find your servings to be satisfying. Because HCG mobilizes fat and makes Visit us: www.ocgnews.com Find us on:
it available to the body as an energy source, it naturally reduces appetite. So even though you are taking in fewer calories, your body can access the energy you have stored in fat cells. Drinking lots of the green tea all day (we like the cold fruity sweet one sweetened with stevia) helps a ton as a natural appetite suppressant and your energy level. Overall, most people have plenty of energy and feel good while on the program . Will HCG interfere with any medications I am currently taking? What about birth control pills or Depo-Provera injections? Homeopathic HCG formulas do not interact with ANY medications, including birth control pills or DepoProvera. Even though there are currently NO clinically proven side effects to our Homeopathic weight loss formula, as with any diet we do recommend consulting with your doctor to make sure this diet is for you.
strual period is complete to start HCG. Once on HCG and you have a menstrual cycle, you can maintain the diet and continue taking HCG. What about pregnancy and taking HCG? If you are pregnant do not take HCG. If you become pregnant during the HCG diet, stop taking HCG and consult your physician. How much weight can I expect to lose on the program? Most people will lose between 25-35 pounds on the 42-day program. Everyone is different. It depends on many factors including how much excess weight you have and how much weight needs to be lost. Often, people lose 7-10 lbs in the first week. Dr. Shoanmarie Seals 2500 Park Central Blvd, Suite B4 Decatur, Georgia 30035

Will I experience any changes in my menstrual cycle taking HCG? Because the amount of HCG is so small, there are no changes to your menstrual cycle. Likewise, HCG will not affect your ability to become pregnant, nor will it increase your chances of getting pregnant. It is best to avoid starting the HCG diet if you are within 5-6 days of your menstrual period. Wait until after your men

ave you seen or heard television and or radio announcements seeking volunteers for Clinical Trials? Did you have visions of a laboratory with scientist in white coats, test tubes, and bright lights? In your vision, did you imagine being injected or administered dangerous medications or electrical shocks while being strapped down to a table with a total loss of control over your own body? While these scenarios make for a good science fiction novel, this is not how clinical trials are conducted. Clinical trials are conducted before and after medications are approved for marketing. Most trials occur in a physician’s office, a study clinic, or a hospital. Volunteers are given as much time as they need to learn and ask questions about what exactly will happen. Will there be any unpleasant side effects? Will the research help me personally? What other options do I have? Can I leave the study at any time? Will it cost me anything? When you volunteer to participate in a clinical trial, you help researchers answer questions. For example: It has been established that medication X works in Caucasians, but will it work in other ethnic groups? TACKLING OBESITY New research says more in-depth screenings are needed to assess health risks for overweight black youths
D
octors should screen for nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors when assessing if overweight black youths are at risk for developing heart disease and high blood pressure, according to a new study. Childhood obesity is linked to the development of cardiovascular disease and death in adulthood. However, black youths are not routinely screened for cardiovascular risk factors, leaving them at risk for health problems, the American Heart Association says in a new report. To predict the number of cardiac risk factors in overweight and obese black teens, researchers examined the interaction of the severity of obesity, insulin resistance, family history of heart attack, diet and physical
24 | Top DOCS
activity in 122 black teens (average age 15). They found that assessed risk factors seen in about half of the youths included:
• 55 percent with high blood pressure.
• 47.5 percent with insufficient
high density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as the “good” cholesterol in our diets.
• More than 50 percent with risk factors for inflammation and clots (not routinely checked in teenagers).
Age, family history of heart attack, severity of obesity and insulin resistance predicted the number of
risk factors present in overweight and obese black teenagers. Diet and physical activity did not predict cardiovascular risk factors. This may be due to the children’s low level of physical activity and high fat intake, researchers said. Based on the new findings, children who are younger, more seriously obese, and have a family history of heart attack would be at risk for heart disease. Doctors should assess youths for insulin resistance, family history of early heart attack and use blood pressure percentile charts to determine high blood pressure (hypertension). Incorporating screenings for inflammation and thrombosis will aid in earlier intervention, researchers said. A Publication of:

Screenings you need to stay healthy at every age Screenings are tests that look for diseases before you have symptoms. Blood pressure checks and mammograms are examples of screenings. You can get some screenings, such as blood pressure readings, in your doctor’s office. Others, such as mammograms, need special equipment, so you may need to go to a different office. After a screening test, ask when you will see the results and who to talk to about them. Below is a checklist of screenings you should ask your doctor about.
For Men: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm If you are between the ages of 65 and 75 and have ever been a smoker, talk to your doctor or nurse about being screened for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). AAA is a bulging in your abdominal aorta, the largest artery in your body. An AAA may burst, which can cause dangerous bleeding and death. Colorectal Cancer Have a screening test for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you may need to be screened earlier. Several different tests can detect this cancer. Your doctor can help you decide which is best for you. 28 | Top DOCS
Depression Your emotional health is as important as your physical health. Talk to your doctor or nurse about being screened for depression especially if during the last 2 weeks: • You have felt down, sad, or hopeless. • You have felt little interest or pleasure in doing things.
Diabetes Get screened for diabetes if your blood pressure is higher than 135/80 or if you take medication for high blood pressure. Diabetes (high blood sugar) can cause problems with your heart, brain, eyes, feet, kidneys, nerves, and other body parts.
High Blood Pressure Starting at age 18, have your blood pressure checked at least every 2 years. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. High blood pressure can cause strokes, heart attacks, kidney and eye problems, and heart failure. High Cholesterol If you are 35 or older, have your cholesterol checked. Have your cholesterol checked starting at age 20 if: • You use tobacco. • You are obese. • You have diabetes or high blood pressure.
• You have a personal history of heart disease or blocked arteries.
• A man in your family had a heart attack before age 50 or a woman, before age 60.
HIV Talk with your health care team about HIV screening if any of these apply to you: • You have had unprotected sex with multiple partners. • You have sex with men. • You use or have used injection drugs. • You exchange sex for money or drugs or have sex partners who do. • You have or had a sex partner who is HIV-infected or injects drugs. • You are being treated for a sexually transmitted disease. • You had a blood transfusion between 1978 and 1985. • You have any other concerns. Syphilis Ask your doctor or nurse whether you should be screened for syphilis.
Overweight and Obesity The best way to learn if you are overweight or obese is to find your body mass index (BMI). You can find your BMI by entering your height and weight into a BMI calculator, such as the one available at: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/. A Publication of:
A BMI between 18.5 and 25 indicates a normal weight. Persons with a BMI of 30 or higher may be obese. If you are obese, talk to your doctor or nurse about seeking intensive counseling and getting help with changing your behaviors to lose weight. Overweight and obesity can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
For Women: Breast Cancer Ask your health care team whether a mammogram is right for you based on your age, family history, overall health, and personal concerns. Cervical Cancer Have a Pap smear every 1 to 3 years if you are 21 to 65 years old and have been sexually active. If you are older than 65 and recent Pap smears were normal, you do not need a Pap smear. If you have had a hysterectomy for a reason other than cancer, you do not need a Pap smear. Chlamydia and Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases Sexually transmitted diseases can make it hard to get pregnant, may affect your baby, and can cause other health problems. • Have a screening test for Chlamydia if you are 24 or younger and sexually active. If you are older than 24, talk to your health care team about being screened for Chlamydia. • Ask your doctor or nurse whether you should be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases. Colorectal Cancer Have a screening test for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, you may need to be screened earlier. Several different tests can detect this cancer. Your health care team can help you decide which is best for you. Depression Your emotional health is as important as your physical health. 2. Will my membership renew automatically? Every year, BBB receives a large number of complaints from people who joined a gym and didn’t realize that their contract would renew automatically and that they would have to take specific steps to cancel their contract.
10 Questions To Ask Before Joining a Gym
I
f you’re planning to lose some pounds by joining a gym, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends asking 10 questions before signing on the dotted line. In 2009 alone, BBB received 7,787 complaints about gyms and health clubs, putting the industry in the top 20 for most complained about businesses. Not only does BBB receive a lot of complaints about gyms, complaints increased by 21 percent in 2009 over the previous year. “Regardless of how eager you are to start losing weight in the New Year, take the time to do your research before joining a gym and don’t give in to high-pressure sales pitches,” said Fred T. Elsberry, Jr., president and CEO of the BBB Serving Metro Atlanta, Athens & Northeast Georgia. “Always check the health club out with your Better Business Bureau, inspect the facilities closely and read the contract carefully, making sure that all of the promises are in print.” BBB recommends asking the gym and yourself the following 10 questions before signing up for a membership: 1. What are the terms of any introductory offers? Gyms often use special introductory offers to attract new members. Just make sure you understand the terms and what the price will be once the introductory period is over.

3. How can I get out of my contract? Getting out of a gym contract isn’t always as easy as getting into one so make sure you understand what steps you would need to take to cancel your membership 4. What happens if I move? Gyms have any number of different policies when it comes to how moving will affect your membership. It might depend on how far away you’re moving and if they have other locations nearby. 5. What happens if the business goes under? BBB often receives complaints from people after their gym suddenly closed up shop and took their money with them. Ask the gym to explain what will happen to your money if they suddenly go out of business.
Questions to ask yourself: 1. What are my fitness goals? Determining your fitness goals in advance will help you select a facility that is most appropriate for you. If you have a serious health condition, consult with a medical professional when setting your fitness goals. 2. Is this location convenient? If the gym is across town, you’ll be less likely to work out. Choose a fitness club that is convenient to work or home so the location is not a deterrent to getting exercise. 3. Can I really afford this every month? Monthly gym fees add up and, after any introductory periods are over, the price could jump higher than your budget can handle. Do the math before you join and make sure you can afford a gym membership. 4. Am I feeling pressured to join? Do not give in to high-pressure sales tactics to join right away. A reputable gym will give you enough time to read the contract thoroughly, tour the facilities and make an informed decision. 5. Did I get everything in writing? Read the contract carefully and make sure that all verbal promises made by the salesperson are in writing. What matters is the document you sign, so don’t just take a salesperson’s word for it.
