n April of 2009, Bernard and Linda Bynum lost their 16-year-old son, Benjamin, to a tragic car accident. “He was just coming from the movies with some friends when he lost his life. He was just right down the street from the house when it 6 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

all happened,” Linda Bynum recalled as she remembered her son. “He never woke up after the accident. That Tuesday he passed is a day we will never forget.” While coping with the lost of their middle son, an avid baseball player who just months before became an organ donor, Linda says the family got a call that would

change all of their lives forever. “When LifeLink called we had no idea that they could use all of Ben’s organs, even his eyes, skin and heart were used for people ages 2 to 32 to keep them alive and give give them a better life,” said Bynum. “When they called I think I cried for 30 minutes straight just

reflecting on the good that came out of tragedy. We had no idea how the donation of Ben’s organs would help in our healing and helping us cope.” Now Bynum, who works for the United Postal Service, spends her free time preaching to other families the benefits of signing up

n a mission after losing son to be an organ donor with LifeLink. The LifeLink Foundation is a nonprofit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of life-saving and life-enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation therapy. Bobby Howard, a former NFL player for three seasons and an organ donor recipient, works as the Director of LifeLink’s Multicultural Donation Education program. He says the non-profit works in a sensitive, diligent, and compassionate manner to facilitate the donation of desperately needed organs and tissues for waiting patients. Howard says LifeLink also works to support research efforts to enhance the available supply of organs and tissue for transplant patients, improve clinical outcomes of patients post transplantation and works closely with the United Network For Organ Sharing (UNOS). “When I first received the news that I would need a new kidney after suffering from a severe kidney disease, I was put on dialysis. I was down in the dumps. I didn’t know what I was going to do with myself,” said Howard who played professional football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “The donation I received in 1994 gave me a new lease on life, a second chance at the game of life that I am forever grateful to LifeLink for.” Howard says people like the Bynum’s are critical to the African American community flourishing. He says he and other supporters must continue to reach out to the African American community and let them know that it is critical for them to reach back

and give the gift of life to someone else. “I received my kidney 21 years ago and it hurts me to see that 63 percent of people that need donations in Georgia are African Americans. I spend my days now going to churches, fraternities, schools and anywhere that will give me a chance to speak, to stress the importance of organ donating,” said Howard, who also hosts gospel concerts and other events to raise awareness. “At the end of the day, when your life ends, you can save someone else’s life. That’s what it is all about.” After looking back

at their experience with LifeLink, Linda Bynum says it was hard to let her son go but knowing he signed up to be an organ donor made things easier. She says she truly enjoys getting others to donate and it is a rewarding experience. Bynum says the work LifeLink is doing is literally changing people’s lives. Bynum says she has a special focus on her community and sparking conversations to get others to give, especially African Americans. She says some people in the community have waited as long as 10 years on dialysis for a kidney.

“My son loved playing baseball and he was great at it, often playing double headers. But he really made me proud knowing he chose to do this. To give life to others is really something amazing. My son will live on through others,” said Bynum. “We have to get people past the fears. There is a belief that doctors will let them die to get heir organs. You have to think of this as a tithe at church. Know what you are doing is the right think to do and you give from your heart, knowing it is for something greater.” For more information, contact LifeLink www. donatelifegeorgia.org.

Oakhurst Medical, NFL team up to tackle breast cancer By Joshua Smith

O

akhurst Medical Center’s Rockdale County location was painted in pink as NFL players and community leaders came together in October to share stories, celebrate survivors and raise awareness for breast cancer. Teaming up with Oakhurst to honor breast cancer survivors and raise awareness was Torell Troup, a defensive tackle 10 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

who has played for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and is currently a free agent. Troup is a graduate of Salem High School in Conyers. Also on hand to celebrate was Dewey McClain, a former NFL linebacker who has played for the Atlanta Falcons. He is now a labor leader and serves as a State Representative representing the 100th District. Former Falcon and linebacker, Christopher

Draft, attended the event as well. The former NFL player has also played for the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams and the Buffalo Bills. Draft lost his wife, Keasha, to lung cancer in 2012, one year after getting married. “This is so much bigger than just wearing pink. Some players in this league know cancer all too well. It’s not just a cute thing and wearing pink. Breast cancer has taken the lives

of mothers, sisters and wives from players across the league,” said Draft. “It is so important for players to be advocates for breast cancer awareness. We have to go beyond just numbers and statistics and work together to support prevention but also detection to catch it and knock it out early.” Former NFL wide receiver Danny Buggs, who has played for several teams such as the New York Giants, Washington

Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Houston Oilers, joined Draft at the event. The NFL athletes attended the event to represent the National Football League’s “Crucial Catch” program. The

program, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, provides football players to participate in awareness events and provide free mammograms. Janice Morris, who heads up community outreach at Oakhurst Center in Conyers, said the event was a great success. “It was phenomenal. The goal was to reach as many women as we could. We were able to give 22 free mammograms to women and reach dozens more with education about breast cancer, risks and the importance of screenings,” said Morris. “What really touched me was that one woman who was in her forties who came to the event and tackled her fear

of getting tested for the first time. Those are the kind of things this event was all about.” Over a lifetime, one in eight women will find out she has breast cancer, according to health officials. Morris says yearly mammograms help women age 40 and older make a “crucial catch” and find breast cancer early. “Today is so important. We get the opportunity to help these women and support a great cause. The key is prevention,” said Morris. “It gives us so much pleasure to both educate and empower these women to live healthier lives.” Eric Hubbard, director of Outreach for

U.S. Congressman Hank Johnson’s office, State Rep. and Breast Cancer survivor Dee-Dawkins Haigler, Rockdale County Magistrate Court Judge Phinia Aten and Pastor Billie Cox of Macedonia Baptist Church in Conyers were also at the event to help celebrate. Oakhurst Medical Center is located at 977 Taylor Street in Conyers. For more information on the program and to find out if you qualify for a free mammogram, call 678-2102700, ext. 712.

CHIROPRACTOR

ave you ever considered seeing a Chiropractor for relief from pain? Whether it’s a result of personal injury, overexertion, or just life, chiropractic can help! Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic care is not just for back pain and massages. This art of healing also manages headaches, arthritis, disc herniations, fibromyalgia, sciatica, arm and leg pain, says Dr. Smith. Dr. Nailah Smith, D.C., the owner of The Full Body Rejuvenation Center in Lithonia, has had the experience of putting her passion of chiropractic medicine and helping people to the test. With her skills and expertise, Dr. Smith was recently able to save the life of a patient who was evaluated for chronic lower back pain. Through orthopedic tests, a comprehensive chiropractic examination, and a lumbar spinal X-Ray, Dr. Smith detected the patient had calcification of the abdominal aorta which can be deadly. “As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I am able to diagnose a wide range of common ailments and refer patients out to the appropriate specialist dependent on the patient’s condition,” Dr. Smith said. FBRC doesn’t only specialize in chiropractic care; they also boast weight management programs, nutritional cleansing, massage therapy, and physiotherapy. Chiropractic care and massage therapy, both deal with the maintenance and improvement of the human frame while nutritional supplementation and cleansing help aid the body’s digestive and immune system. A goal of Full Body Rejuvenation Center is to bring upscale, spa-like amenities to DeKalb County without the downtown traffic. Dr. Smith is known for promoting full body wellness and “putting the care back in healthcare.”

highly sensitive to pain. Dr. Smith encourages people to pay attention to warning signs from their bodies, such as morning stiffness and chronic aches and pains. A spinal adjustment may be one of the keys to enjoying a more healthy and active lifestyle. “Regular visits to the chiropractor may save on unnecessary pain medications, days of illness, and risks of having surgery.”

FIT CANDY

he room is dimly lit and the music is upbeat and thumping as Kee Strane stands next to her floorto-ceiling pole, ready to instruct her class. “It’s time for pole play,” she says to the women. And so the workout begins with Strane’s group of protégés mimicking her, using their 16 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

arms and legs to pull themselves onto the poles. It’s fun—and strenuous. Welcome to Fit Candy Studio in Conyers, Georgia. It’s a fitness center for women only. Women feel comfortable here. Picture perfect model figures are not a problem and that’s fine with Strane. Strane envisioned opening a place where women could come together, exer-

cise and fellowship in a fun environment. Nearly eight years later, the exercise studio for women she calls “Fit Candy,” is still going strong. Strane has built a following of women who say they enjoy the “sisterhood” and non-traditional classes Fit Candy offers such as pole dancing, chick boxing, belly dancing, chair vixens and Zumba. “God put it in my spirit to give women a place where they could exercise in an environment that was only for them. I designed the classes so that they would feel less like working out and more like me time,” said Strane. Some of the women come in shy at first but soon build their confidence as they tone their bodies and work what they’ve got to music. “They’re having fun. They’re exercising. They feel sensual. They have support in one another. Most

students will lose up to 10 pounds in their very first month,” Strane says. Ebony Thornton said she joined the fitness studio because it caters to women and offers an array of non-traditional workout classes. She has been coming to the gym for nearly two years. “I go there three days a week. I love all the classes, and I especially love that Fit Candy is a sisterhood where women receive a lot of encouragement, support and love,” said Thornton. “Fit Candy helps us women to see and find our inner beauty, confidence and sensuality. The owner’s heart for God and her love for Him shows in everything she does.” The women who take classes at Fit Candy range in age and profession, Strane says. Some of the women have formed friendships and gone on weekend getaways together.

Georgia Frierson is one who has made several friends and enjoys the outings as much as the classes at Fit Candy. She has been a member of Fit Candy for six years. She signed up to take classes. Now, she teaches them—Tone, Legs & Abs. “I love it because it’s the only place I can go where I burn calories and get stronger,” said Frierson. “Nobody judges you. It’s not like co-ed gyms where you might feel self conscious. We’re just all having fun.” Marquice Mason, whose nickname is “Brickhouse,” also is a member-turned instructor at Fit Candy.

“I’ve been a member at Fit Candy Studio for 2 1/2 years and an instructor for 1 year,” said Mason. “Fit Candy is the most warm and inviting fitness center I have ever been to. The staff members are all friendly, the classes are lots of fun, and the all-female environment makes me feel so much more comfortable than going to a regular co-ed gym. I recommend Fit Candy to all of my girlfriends.” Fit Candy is located at 1413 Iris Drive SE, Conyers. “Y

ou all are my inspiration,” Dee Dawkins-Haigler told the group of women survivors who were honored at the Greater Lithonia Chamber of Commerce’s October luncheon.

Defeating Cancer Breast cancer survivor Dee Dawkins-Haigler is on a bold faith walk By Valerie J. Morgan

G

eorgia State House Rep. Dee DawkinsHaigler doesn’t mince words when it comes to letting people know that she’s a warrior in the fight against breast cancer. When she learned that she had breast cancer, she didn’t despair. Instead, she got an attitude: “Cancer done chose the wrong chick for real. You want to play? You’ve got the right one now, baby,” an animated Dawkins-Haigler told a room filled with cancer survivors, business representatives and others who cheered her on with 18 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

thunderous applause. The outspoken lawmaker from Lithonia, Georgia shared her message as the keynote speaker for the Greater Lithonia Chamber of Commerce, which honored several breast cancer survivors in the community during its National Breast Cancer Awareness Month luncheon in October. DawkinsHaigler told the group that having the right mindset plays a big role when your life is on the line. “It’s how you meet stuff, how you deal with it,” she said. “You’ve got to know who and what you are, where you are on

this journey and never accept or have a defeatist attitude. Your biggest enemy can be yourself.” Dawkins-Haigler said she encourages cancer survivors through a Facebook page she has created: “Dynamic Divas Defeating Cancer—You picked the wrong Chick Cancer.” The page is working. She says she has heard from friends who have cancer and given them a platform to learn from one another. “I want to encourage survivors that whatever the outcome, we still win. Even until death, it’s still alright—as long as I die in Christ…That means on the other side, there’ll be no

pain, no sorrow,” said Dawkins-Haigler. The ordained minister and politician said she is planning to set up a web site and she also has a book deal in the works to empower survivors. Dawkins-Haigler said she first learned she had cancer when she was on the Floor at the State Capitol. Her doctor called and told her that she needed to come into her office right away. It wasn’t good news: After two mammograms and a biopsy, DawkinsHaigler learned she had breast cancer. She was positive and determined. “We’re going to treat it, beat it and move on,” Dawkins20 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

Haigler told her doctor. DawkinsHaigler completed her treatment, but now she’s on another mission. Lashing out against the American Cancer Society (ACS) for its recent recommendation that women should have fewer mammograms, she is vowing to bring changes. ACS now says women should begin annual mammograms at age 45 – five years later than it had previously recommended. ACS said it reached its recommendation after carefully looking at both the advantages and disadvantages of mammograms for younger women, whose

risk of breast cancer is much lower than that of older women. By age 55, women can transition to being screened every other year, ACS said. “That is fowl, ridiculous and crazy. Early detection does save lives,” said Dawkins-Haigler. “We cannot allow insurance companies to mess with our lives. We can’t play with women’s life. We have to fight this. There is strength in numbers. Meanwhile, the chair of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, said she also plans to continue to push for people of color to be involved in the state’s medical cannabis talks.

Dawkins-Haigler has become a champion for medical cannabis, which is said to relieve pain from a number of chronic diseases and medical conditions including cancer. The caucus empaneled its own commission to discuss the issue after blacks were excluded from a state-appointed panel. Georgia lawmakers are studying whether to expand the law to allow for the production and distribution of medical marijuana. Almost 250 families have qualified for the state’s new medical marijuana registry, allowing them to use the oil in treatment.

The New Superfood

Why is kale one of the latest veggie rages? By Mae D. Jones

K

ale, the green, leafy vegetable with the slight bitter flavor, has become one of the latest kings of veggies. Why is this green, bitter and curly vegetable that was once used to adorn salad bars in so much demand? Why is it now included in our salads, sandwiches and vegetable smoothies? According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, an osteopathic physician and a New York Times bestselling author, kale has been labeled as one of the best vegetables for our health and is considered to be a nutritional “superfood.” Kale, he says, is high in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. Researchers have noted that kale protects and prevents against chronic diseases such as prostate and colon cancers, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, eye diseases and many others autoimmune diseases (mercola.com). As compared to spinach, kale has a 1000% more vitamin 22 • WWW.OCGNEWS.COM

C than a cup of cooked spinach and the calcium and iron included in kale is much better for the human digestive system, The Medical News Today reports. As with anything else, kale does possess some potential risks. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), people who have an allergy to walnuts should be careful to note if the presence of walnut is included in the specific package before consumption.

Additionally, if one is suffering from thyroid disease, eating too much kale can cause the thyroid to enlarge, according to Joseph Pinzone, MD, CEO/AMAI Medical & Wellness Practice. Dr. Pinzone, a guest on The Doctors television show, said chemicals in kale can create a problem for some 40 million Americans who suffer from thyroid disease. Kale, like other cruciferous vegetables, contain goitrogens, which can interfere with thyroid’s hormone production.

Still, kale, with its many benefits to prevent illnesses and the growing demand to use as the goto-food with diets, has seen an increase in demand. The College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia noted that farmers are planting and selling more kale than in previous years. Due to the overwhelming demand, consumers will notice the differences in the price point of kale over collards, mustard greens and turnip greens at the market.
