Supervisor’s Message Dear Neighbor: Tomorrow marks 20 years since the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11. As Americans we all United and we continue to do to this day to remember the pain and sacrifice and to recognize the heroes who live and died saving others. I wish that same spirit ignited to defeat Covid. I hope 20 years from now the stories shared will highlight our unity, strength and resilience. 20 years ago, I lay sleeping with my youngest baby boy Ben next to me. My husband Casey suddenly woke me exclaiming “something’s happening” and rallied me to get up to join him in the living room to watch the TV. His parents lived on 14th Street at the time. No TV or cellphones then. His dad had already left for the subway for work. We called them to check on and described the situation unfolding to his mom. We urged against, but she headed out to find Casey’s dad. We worried for hours wondering. Fortunately for our family, they were reunited safely but others suffered a worse fate. That day 8 EMTs, 60 police officers, 343 firefighters, 2997 civilians died. Hundreds more have died since from cancers acquired from breathing the dust during the rescue operation. #Neverforget Our secretary in my law firm quit that day deciding life was too short for litigation. Our American lives changed forever in how we travel and keep our community safe from outside interests. But our country unified around the changes needed to keep our communities safe. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, marks the 20th Year of Remembrance of the tragic events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.
This Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021 many fire departments across Orange County will broadcast through Facebook Live a brief Ceremony of Remembrance and reflection, in honor of the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The countywide broadcast will be brief, and officially begin just after 9 a.m. and conclude at approximately 9:15 a.m. It will be heard by all fire stations throughout the County. If tuning into the livestream, please join us by 9 a.m., as again, the ceremony is brief. The community is welcome to join us at any of the fire stations, but please be mindful if you attend to the strict health and safety protocols, masks included, and note that public access will be limited to the exterior of the fire stations only. My team will be at fire stations throughout the district. Additionally, if in attendance, please arrive by 8:45 a.m., as the broadcast will begin just after 9 a.m. and concludes at approximately 9:15 a.m. Other events are planned throughout the day in District 2: if you attend, I encourage you to wear a mask. Here are some links to events in the area. On Sunday, my office planned a celebration to recognize our District 2 Olympians & Gold Medalists. They represent the American spirit, drive and determination. They symbolize our strength and ability to overcome adversity and challenges through discipline, hard work, and sacrifice. Join us this Sunday at 9am for the parade with the reception beginning promptly at 10am.

DISTRICT 2 COMMUNITY UPDATES & PROGRAMS Happy Friday, Thank you for joining me today for Manuel’s Message. This week has been both busy and fun. On Sunday I had the pleasure of joining Ann Pallo for her 100th Birthday Celebration! It was truly touching to see Ann’s family at her reception. Wednesday I was in Huntington Beach for the Grand Opening of Zankou Chicken. Manuel Chavez Our office had a blast with the Huntington Beach Chamber of Constituent Services Manager Costa Mesa, Cypress, Commerce and the Iskenderian Family. I wish them many years Beach (Oak View of success and for the record, I highly recommend their Combo Huntington Neighborhood), Stanton & Rossmoor Kabob. Today, I was at the Grand Opening Ceremony of Sweetfin in Costa Mesa! Thanks to the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce for assisting the small businesses in Costa Mesa. I look forward to trying Sweetfin soon. Finally, tomorrow Rossmoor is hosting a “Family Foodie” Festival at Rush Park. They have a variety of bands playing from 2pm-8pm with amazing food trucks. Stop by enjoy some good food and vibes. Anyways, I’ll chat with you all again next Friday. Happy weekend District 2! I hope that you all had a fantastic Labor Day and that you thanked a union! This week has been another busy one in our office. We have been out in the field promoting transparency and getting vaccinated, two of Supervisor Foley’s priorities. Our team attended ribbon cuttings for the new Zankou Chicken in Huntington Beach as well as the #BeHere Mural in Huntington Beach. The story behind Zankou Chicken is truly incredible, and we are so excited to have them bringing their home cooked meals from Beirut, to Los Angeles, and now to Huntington Beach. I also had the honor of joining this week’s Behavioral Health Advisory Board meeting where we discussed Suicide Prevention Week and ways that we can all take action to ensure that our loved ones feel safe and heard so that they do not reach such a dark point. TRANSPARENCY IN GOVERNANCE Commissioner Update Appointee: Michael Wellborn Commission, Committee, or Board: OC Parks Commission Date: September 10th, 2021 Update: I was joined by Coastal Cities Commissioner Joe Muller (Chair) and Inland Cities Commissioner Dave Shawver. After introductions, Chair Muller presented a memento of thanks from the Commission to departing OC Parks Director Stacy Blackwood. Stacy was then given the honor of doing a release of a rehabilitated red tail hawk! The hawk took off, obviously enjoying its freedom. The Commission then heard a presentation from Center staff and were given a tour of the facilities. Two other red tail hawks, a great horned owl and a bald eagle were brought out for viewing. We also were able to observe a number of other raptors at the site.

WORKFORCE & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
A round of new funding will open up September 9 through September 30 for California’s Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant Program. The program provides grants of $5,000 to $25,000 to small businesses hurt by the pandemic. Businesses are eligible based on annual revenue as documented in their most recent tax return. Until September 8, the program is processing waitlisted applicants from previous rounds. Waitlisted applicants do not need to reapply. Click here for more information.

PET OF THE WEEK
Meet Hubba!
Hubba is a happy 4-year-old Anatolian Shepherd mix who ended up at OC Animal Care after being found hiding in the bushes near a freeway exit in Anaheim this past May by a good Samaritan. He appeared tired and scared, according to the caller, and he had been running up and down the street for some time. Hubba was quickly rescued by OC Animal Care and returned to the shelter for care. After his owner failed to return to claim him, Hubba was placed for adoption. Hubba quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite! He enjoys going for walks, getting treats, and getting belly rubs from his friends. Hubba would be ecstatic to continue his upward path with a new forever family.
