Young adults experienced a 550% increase in fentanyl-involved overdose deaths from 2017 (n=12) to 2021 (n=78). The overall rate for fentanyl-involved overdose deaths rose 8.5-fold within the 5-year timeframe from 1.1 per 100,000 persons to 9.4 per 100,000 persons. In response to these horrific trends, the County of Orange (County) increased access to Narcan, a nasal spray version of the medication naloxone, which is a prescription medication that reverses the effects of an overdose from opioid substances. All County-contracted Narcotic Treatment/Opioid Treatment Program sites have Narcan available to clients with opioid use disorders, and all County behavioral health clinics have Narcan onsite, in case someone overdoses at a clinic.
