Lack of experience could easily be our downfall this year. Our lack of experience is not necessarily the experience of individual players, beÄĽ cause there are some who have played club for several years such as junior Erin Reddy and sophomore Sydney Michel. But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re inexperiÄĽ enced at playing with each other. Unlike last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team, we have played together for only several weeks whereas most of the starters from last year played with each other for years. We need to learn the other girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; strengths and weaknesses and their tendencies while playing on the court. As coaches always preach, we are only as strong as our weakest link, but our weakest link is not knowing how to work together. And this has been obvious in recent scrimmages with many unforced errors and miscommunications, mainly resulting in balls dropping with no one goÄĽ ing for them. But in the end these problems are only minor. EDITORIAL: Oct. 18 is waaaay too busy!
7HYLU[Z HUK Z[\KLU[Z HSPRL HYL Z\YL [V ÅVJR [V [OL campus for Homecoming, Oct. 18. That is, after they cheer on the Jog-A-Thon, attend the Fall Family Festival and watch the annual Chalk Mural be created—all on the same day. It’s just too much.
See story, page 3 Sure, putting all of the events on one day might save a little money and attract a larger crowd overall. According to Lindsey Sackheim, president of the Parents’ Association, the PA hopes to boost attendance to the Fall Family Festival by putting it on the same day as the more successful Jog-A-Thon, at the same time reducing the impact on students’ academic schedules But what about students who have obligations to more than one event? How are they expected to be committed to so much on a single day? And won’t having all of these events at once reduce their impact? Each event traditionally has its own day, bringing excitement with each of them because they are the special event of the day. The Chalk Mural is one such event—many students get out of class to spend the whole day drawing on the
sidewalk, getting chalk all over themselves and completing the mural over the course of a single day. On a different day, Homecoming, along with the pep rally, sucks up school spirit for a day and directs it toward supporting the sports teams. And the Jog-A-Thon and Fall Family Festival, while not quite as important for most high-school students, there are a number who participate in or volunteer for both. Having all of these events on the same day will simply be draining. Imagine the student already missing class to create the Chalk Mural. In the morning, he skips the Jog-AThon to keep drawing. At lunch, he drops everything to go to the pep rally—perhaps even play in the Jazz Band. And if he’s on the soccer team, he’ll have to shower off the chalk and play in the game late into the night. And that’s not to mention students who want to volunteer in the Fall Family Festival. Even the Student Council suffers. They usually hold their biggest fundraiser, the Student Council car wash, during the Fall Family Festival (which is traditionally on a Saturday), but won’t be able to this year because of the other events going on at the same time. So, yes, parents coming to see the Jog-A-Thon might also stop by the Fall Family Festival and the Chalk Mural. But isn’t all that too much for one day?

When Victoria Loustalot, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;03, was 10 years old, her father died with AIDS. Now, 19 years later, Loustalot has published a memoir entitled â&#x20AC;&#x153;This Is How You Say Goodbye.â&#x20AC;? The memoir, which she began during her time at Country Day and released on Sept. 10, revolves around her relationship with her father. The Inspiration Âł,WÂśV D FRPLQJÄĽRIÄĽDJH VWRU\ LQ PDQ\ ZD\V ´ /RXVWDORW VDLG â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also sort of a classic heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey. I set out to solve the riddle of my father and of myself.â&#x20AC;? Loustalot, who originally attended a Catholic elementary school, transferred to Country Day in the seventh grade. When her father committed suicide four days before her 11th birthday, Loustalot was faced with a multitude of emoÄĽ tions. Country Day Beginnings Even after her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, Loustalot still wondered about her father and wrote about him. During her sophomore year, Loustalot wrote a rememÄĽ EHUHGÄĽSODFH HVVD\ RQ WKH 2UFKDUG &DIp D UHVWDXUDQW KDOIZD\ between her mother in Sacramento and her father in Santa Cruz, where she was passed between her divorced parents afÄĽ ter spending the weekend with her dad. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She let the story tell itself through subtle details, someÄĽ thing that her classmates were still learning to do,â&#x20AC;?
