But we’re inexperiÄĽ enced at playing with each other. Unlike last year’s team, we have played together for only several weeks whereas most of the starters from last year played with each other for years. We need to learn the other girls’ strengths and weaknesses and their tendencies while playing on the court. As coaches always preach, we are only as strong as our weakest link, but our weakest link is not knowing how to work together. And this has been obvious in recent scrimmages with many unforced errors and miscommunications, mainly resulting in balls dropping with no one goÄĽ ing for them. “I chose this painting because it best describes whatI do or aspire to accomplish. It is sold and gone. I do not know who bought it. But the person who owns this painting picked up what I was trying to convey. Lola, the Labrador in the back, is watching as Winston, the Dalmatian, is being hugged by my cousin. They are in my kitchen on the Fourth of July, and Lola is very jealous. We had to put Lola down that year, so it is a very special painting. The owner of that painting does not know our family, but she responded to the gesture and the psychological content I fed that painting. I feel really good that my voice spoke to a stranger. Besides, I will always own this painting in spirit.” - Robin Giustina

The rounded shapes are used as a base element in conjunction with color, composition, line quality and the translucency of the paint to create any variation of pieces.” - Andy Cunningham (picture displayed as background)

“I like this piece because it shows light and color in such a spectacular way. The aspect I was going for in this piece was for it to have an ethereal and spiritual feeling with the light and different shades of green.” - Alex Kardasopoulos

¸,W V WKH FRQWLQXDWLRQ RI WKH IHPDOH SRZHU ßJXUHV WKDW , YH EHHQ working on. Whenever I hear stories about women being assaulted or taken advantage of, especially very young women, I get this surge of rage that I don’t know what to do with. I experience this experience of rage that’s pretty overwhelming and I guess in P\ PLQG ZKHQ , ßUVW EHJDQ WR FUHDWH WKHVH IHPDOH ZDUULRUV , imagined them as being saviours who somehow would come down magically and come to the aid of young women who are being assaulted. Just atrocities. You always wish that there were something that could be done. It’s my one feeble attempt at conveying that emotion.” - Julie Didion

“The piece (was) inspired by the heat of the Sacramento summer. It is part of a newer series of work. The rounded shapes are used as a base element in conjunction with color, composition, line quality and the translucency of the paint to create any variation of pieces.” - Andy Cunningham (picture displayed as background)

EDITORIAL: Oct. 18 is waaaay too busy!

7HYLU[Z HUK Z[\KLU[Z HSPRL HYL Z\YL [V ÅVJR [V [OL campus for Homecoming, Oct. 18. That is, after they cheer on the Jog-A-Thon, attend the Fall Family Festival and watch the annual Chalk Mural be created—all on the same day. It’s just too much.

See story, page 3 Sure, putting all of the events on one day might save a little money and attract a larger crowd overall. According to Lindsey Sackheim, president of the Parents’ Association, the PA hopes to boost attendance to the Fall Family Festival by putting it on the same day as the more successful Jog-A-Thon, at the same time reducing the impact on students’ academic schedules But what about students who have obligations to more than one event? How are they expected to be committed to so much on a single day? And won’t having all of these events at once reduce their impact? Each event traditionally has its own day, bringing excitement with each of them because they are the special event of the day. The Chalk Mural is one such event—many students get out of class to spend the whole day drawing on the

sidewalk, getting chalk all over themselves and completing the mural over the course of a single day. On a different day, Homecoming, along with the pep rally, sucks up school spirit for a day and directs it toward supporting the sports teams. And the Jog-A-Thon and Fall Family Festival, while not quite as important for most high-school students, there are a number who participate in or volunteer for both. Having all of these events on the same day will simply be draining. Imagine the student already missing class to create the Chalk Mural. In the morning, he skips the Jog-AThon to keep drawing. At lunch, he drops everything to go to the pep rally—perhaps even play in the Jazz Band. And if he’s on the soccer team, he’ll have to shower off the chalk and play in the game late into the night. And that’s not to mention students who want to volunteer in the Fall Family Festival. Even the Student Council suffers. They usually hold their biggest fundraiser, the Student Council car wash, during the Fall Family Festival (which is traditionally on a Saturday), but won’t be able to this year because of the other events going on at the same time. So, yes, parents coming to see the Jog-A-Thon might also stop by the Fall Family Festival and the Chalk Mural. But isn’t all that too much for one day?
